snceofMM 'ello. I've had the Fender Beginner's Bass Kit for a couple months, and it helped me really get into playing bass, but i'm curious: when it comes time to upgrade, should i get a 5-string, since you have the 5th string to add more to play with, and a lot of rock bands use 5-string, or should i get a Real 4-string to replace the one I have now? And what brand would you recommend, or would Fender be okay to stick with? thanks in advance. pirate the question is, how long have you been playing. if only a couple months, stick with the one you have now. you don't wanna go out and buy a nice bass and a month or two later you wanna play the guitar cause the bass doesn't do it for you any more. The only time I would recomend a 5 string to someone is if the've been playing and know how to play. the 5 string has a wider neck so you have more stretching to do. But if you've been playing for awhile and you know this is the instrument you'll stick with then get a 5-string. you just can't be all crazy with it as easily as a 4 string. you'll have to work a little more. for brands, it's all depending on your price range and what you like. musicman basses are awsome cause the are very versitile in their range. but they cost over 600. so tell us what kind of music you like to play and we can give you better advice. But I recomend sticking with the one you have right now (unless it's broken).

Umm...I prefer more rock-oriented bass music, if that helps. I have played for only a couple months, but I practice about every other day, so I can't really say I'm good, but I'm nowhere along the lines of when I first got excited and picked it up. ninja I know I said 5 string, but would even a 6 string be too much/a waste of money? Again, I'm just looking for advice for the future: i'm not going to buy it right now sweatdrop

no, not a 6 string. that's a little to much. just go with a 5 string. unless you want a really good bass go for the musicman stringray or sub. If you don't have that kinda money then buy an olp musicman and then buy sub musicman pickups. have them swaped and you have a cheap awsome versitile bass. but it will be 4 string. unless you can find a 5 string olp and 5 string sub pickups. I would do that and it would cost you less than 300. maybe less than 250. but if you don't have the money then i posted a thread about a 5 string for 80 dollar's. it's a store on ebay and they have alot of them.

Some stuff i checked out was some bc rich basses with natural finishes so they dont look so metal but still has a nice shape to it for anything, But since of what your into go for a Fender Jazz or a Warwick Corvette. If you cant affored a Warwick go for the RockBass versions of them, since they're a lot cheaper.

Warwicks are ok, not much of a jazz bass

And hopefully I can move to America and get me that Rickenbacker

Rickenbacker's today are probably one of the most boutique basses out there. But they are worth it. Though I do want to warn you about one thing. 4003's are no where near as perfect as 4001's. What you've heard from Rush, Yes, and Motorhead are all 4001's. They have that great clangy rock tone that is uncomparable. Though that also means that they are 'extremely' expensive. Rick's go from $1,000 to $2,000 at the cheapest. Buying a Rick is a serious investment and if you 'do' get one, I do hope you get your mitts on a 4001. EDIT: I just remembered that the bass in my sig is a Rickenbacker.

Now I have a question of my own.
I'm looking for a six-string bass that has a thin neck. Any ideas?

Again, I'm just looking for advice for the future: i'm not going to buy it right now sweatdrop It all depends on what you're playing and how low (or high if you go that way with a 5-string) you want to or need to go. If you can get along just fine in everything you play just by maybe tuning down a half step or even a whole step, then don't bother getting a 5 or 6-string. I'll admit, a 5 string is a tempting thing to me and it always has been, but I've not really had the real need for one yet. I dont ever need to play that low with my band, so I'm not going to spend the extra 500+ dollars to get one. Also, the best way to judge whether you need a new bass or not, is whether or not you can tell it's holding you back or not. I played on the same bass for almost seven years. A good ol' Danelectro with a built in chorus effect button. It's a great bass and has served me very well. But then, this past year, I laid my hands on a Schecter Stilletto Elite 4-string bass. I fell in love and have since bought that beautiful instrument. Basically what I'm saying is, if you are still growing exponentially on the current bass, then perhaps it's not time to get a new one just yet. Granted, you'll never stop learning and if you're anything like me, your talent will grow in leaps and bounds. One day you'll think youre about as good as you can get, then suddenly the next you're whipping out smooth bass lines faster and more complex than ever before. But basically, when the bass you have starts to sound...I dont know...Not right for you, it's time to move up. I was lucky and got a decent instrument right off the bat without even knowing it. You on the other hand, from the sounds of it, are playing on a bass that will only truly suit your playing skills for a short while. You likely wont want to wait for almost seven years like me before you need a new bass, but give it time. Let your current bass grow on you and become a part of you. That way when the time comes when you absolutely need a new instrument, you'll feel it. That's how it was for me at least. But back to the string question. Like I said, if you don't need the extra low or high notes, but only want them, it's a waste of money in my opinion. Go with functionality over fancifulness. Quality over quantity. I'm quite content with my 4 strings and am still learning to do and play new things all the time. Developing new skills and techniques. ^_^ Give it time and you'll be able to make a much better decision. Also, don't go just off of what I or anyone here says. We'll offer you advice, but you shouldnt follow it to the letter. Be your own player. Your own musician. Don't do things just because someone says it's a good idea. You're not a real musician unless you do what your heart and musical soul tell you and not anyone else.

The amount of money it costs you isnt always going to mean it's the best out there. My current bass has a better sound than any $1200 bass I've layed my fingers across. Know what my Schecter cost me? $576 after tax and a discount cause I know people at guitar center. It's got a nice fat bass tone while maintaining a crisp clear high tone that is to die for. Comes stock with EMG HZ pickups, some of the best you can get. Neck-through body. The thing is beautiful. So until I play on a Rick and am proven otherwise, I'll stick with my Schecter.

I have a '72 Gibson Ripper L9-S...
I love it, but, I'm looking for a nice five string
Any suggestions within $500-$1750?
I can't put too much money in, and it'll be a side job to be rebuilt anyway
