Tsubame laughed heartily as she took her seat among the other three, finally feeling this small break would bring some relief to her busy work day. Not for a minute did she rest or take a lunch break- she was too busy serving it to someone else. The waitress took any and every customer she could get, and worked inexorably hard at her job, no matter what. She began eating slowly, but in enough portions to actually taste her meal, unlike the sudden food-deprived Shihan next to her. Throughout the meal, she made sure to nod her head in agreement to most of the comments made, taking conceivable amounts of sake as she did so. But just as quick as the meal began, it appeared to be over.
She slumped over in disappointment; but only for a moment, almost too quick for anyone to catch on to. Tsubame wasn't there to take breaks off to her discretion, she had a job to do! Smiling as she got up and dusted off the white apron in front of her, nodding in understanding. "Yes, you two have had a lot to lately, haven't you? If you ever need help cleaning or, anything at all, just.. let me know.." Her confidence quickly faded as she stuttered and blushed before picking up her tray and bowing to Chizuru. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Chizuru-san. Don't hesitate to come back, we always have discounts and something new to try." Then looking over to Yahiko again, her blush deepened before she began twisting her hair in her fingers and nervously shook her head. "N-no, you don't have to do that. I-I.. was actually supposed to get off work in five minutes.. but I usually work overtime until midnight on days like this.." Was that an offer maybe?
Kenji, like the rest of them, was more or less relaxed and enjoyed their limited time of peace before having to go back to regular dojo itinerary. 'Kenji-sempai this' 'Kenji-sempai that'-- it was very tiresome, and he wondered how his mother did this job with someone as stubborn as Yahiko for so long. She was strong, that's why, and I've got to be strong for her, and for Tou-san as well.. The swordsman's thoughts were interrupted as Yahiko stood up, already time to go? He felt like whining like when he was a child and used to climb roofs as an act of rebellion from conformity and rules. It wasn't quite that easy anymore. Suddenly snapping out of that mindframe, his face flushed unexpectedly at the proposition at walking Chizuru home. That means he could find out where she was, or at least some kind of idea. Keeping a genuine expression to attempt to hide his embarrassment (for what reason, he wasn't really sure) and nodded. "Of course, we don't want anything happening to our newly acquired student now do we?"
Rising from the area, Kenji began heading for the front of the door as everyone else was, Tsubame to linger and see what Yahiko would say next. "I'll see you at the Dojo a little later." Turning around, the teen looked to Chizuru, waiting for her to lead in the direction of her home. What they didn't know was that a lot more was going to be waiting for them than a nice and cozy house.

Yahiko gaved somewhat of an irritated look as he patted Tsubame's head. "Listen Tsubame, I'm bringing ya home whether your like it or not. Like I said, you seem to have a knack for getting into trouble, no matter how much you try to avoid it. So, I'm taking you home, and that's that. No ifs, ands, and definantly no buts about it." With his other hand, he waved Chizuru and Kenji a goodbye as the two teens exited the Akabeko.
Chizuru smiled as she waved back to the two and caught up to her Sempai. While walking down the dirt road, she couldn't help but laugh a little. "Those two are certainly head over heels for each other, aren't they? I'm surprised that those two aren't married yet, especially at their age. I suppose there are reasons though," She remembered the tale that her grandfather told her about her parents getting married rather late compared to most couples of the time. Perhaps one of them needed a little nudge in the right direction.
The young merchant inhaled the sweet spring air of the now late afternoon. She loved this time of year. It wasn't too hot or cold, everything was coming out of the earth after their sleep during winter and everything just seemed so peaceful. Which was nice to occaisionally contrast her rather outgoing nature.
Without warning, Chizuru wrapped her arm around Kenji's and looked up at him, grinning widely. "Thanks for walking me home, Himura-kun. I really appreciate it. I'm sure my gramps will to, well, after he yells at me for running off on my own today. Yeesh, I tell ya, grandparents can be real worry warts." The young woman didn't take into account that the closest thing to a grandparent that Kenji ever had was probably Seijuro Hiko, who would probably go out of his way to make a bit more trouble for his apprentice's son than to actually full out worry over him.
As they turned a corner, they made it to a more woody area of Tokyo. Chizuru pointed down the path. "This is a short cut to my place. It may look a little creepy, but I enjoy this path then the busy streets on days like this. A bit because I enjoy the nature, but mostly because there are way to many guards from back home that are probably stressing out on that road right now."
Within the bushes though, a dark-clothed individual, watched the two closely, his wakisachi by his side. He gripped it tightly as he looked over to another one of his comrades in a tree. Mission: aquire a bit more about the young red-head. They knew it would be difficult to take him on: And even their employers knew that there was no chance in hell they were going to win. However, this was all a part of their plan. It was always good to take things a little slowly at first, and then strike without warning when the time was right.
For now, they just listened, wondering if anything the Himura said would prove to be beneficial in the end. Heck, they weren't going to fight and lose just yet.

Without another retort, Tsubame could only render another heartwarming smile towards the Shihan- he was so compassionate in such strange ways. But that's what she liked about him. Maybe being blunt wasn't always the best thing, nor was beating around the bush, but she felt he was getting closer and closer every time. The waitress brushed at her clothing nervously, swiping a brunette strand behind her ear everytime it intervened in her vision. Trying to stay occupied, perhaps? Not that it mattered anyway, Yahiko took up all the attention time of anyone, no matter how obnoxious he was or willing to admit it or not. For the time being, the teen listened to Chizuru's light talk, and he nodded and laughed at the thought of Yahiko and Tsubame becoming a couple one day, even though they already seemed like one. "Yeah, Yahiko's not the best at saying what he means all the time, no matter how much of a loudmouth he is." So maybe that was saying a little too much, but wanting to open up to someone wasn't a bad thing, was it? The soundless night brought a suttle friendliness between the two walking, the upcoming trees blowing against the light breeze cascading through the air like a translucent blanket of cold. The environment certainly didn't ready Kenji for something as bold a move as wrapping his arm around Chizuru's. The Sempai blushed furiously, and was increasingly thankful as the dark foliage of the forest enveloped them into a shortcut. He barely caught her words, but thankfully it was enough for a decent reply to rid himself of the flushed feelings rushing through his face like wildfire. But somehow he loved the feeling when he was around her- it brought him life and a sense of adrenaline rush, like he would do anything in the world just to make sure she was safe.
"It's not a problem at all, Chizuru-san. In fact, it was my pleasure." Grandparents, what an odd word. In fact, Kenji had never even known his parents.. well, parents, nor known if they were dead or not. The inclination of the question had never been brought to his attention, and it gave him a weird feeling that his parents were more alone than he had ever acknowledged. "It's great to know you have such a loving grandfather.." Amongst the dark path, a few lighted friends decided to brighten their way, the insects buzzing interminably to the sounds of the trees against the wind. The Sempai often enjoyed this mutual quiet, and indulged in it while training in the mountains- it was nice to know that others still appreciated aspects of nature like himself.
"So, tell me a little more about yourself. You told me about your family, but I don't quite know you yourself. Just because your family has one reputation doesn't say anything about the people in it." He could only hope Chizuru wouldn't take that the wrong way. Unfortunate for his eavesdroppers too, that they would have the honor of listening in on another girl's profile rather than what they were hoping for. The fireflies radiated an eerie green shade that shrouded the forest as if in a haze- but in a good way, it was almost like an eternal dream that they would never have to leave.

"Well... let's see... what is there to say about me?" Chizuru laughed. "Well, I've been living with my grandfather since my parents passed away. They died when I was about six years old. Before here, we were living in Osaka for a bit as well as Yokohama. We usually had to move around a bit because of my grandfather's job with the Government. But since Tokyo is the Capital and all, I think we should be here for good. Other than that... there's nothing really all that important about me. I guess I play a few musical instruments and sing a bit... but really... nothing else."
She laughed again nervously. Chizuru really didin't find herself all that excitement, although she was always looking for it. She wanted a bit of... spice in her life, adventure to be exact. That was another big reason that she decided to try out Kendo; at least she'd be able to have some excitement there that wasn't entirely dangerous.
The raven-haired girl fiddled with a strand slightly. Why couldn't she be more of an exciting person? She was positive that Kenji was probably always doing daring things... like taking on those Yakuza earlier. That was REALLY something! Ugh... she must've seemed so boring to him! A little sigh came out. It's so embaressing.
Suddenly, Chizuru turned her head as she heard a little snap within the bushes. She raised one of her eyebrows, but then turned her head around and looked back at Kenji. "Must've just been an animal I guess."
If only they were simple squirrels. The men still in the bushes grumbled to themselves silently. They didn't need to hear the jibber-jabber of some woman... they needed anything important against the Himura kid... though they didn't see why. Didn't Tsukayama-sama have a bunch of information on the kid as is? Jeeze. Honestly... they weren't sure what was going on in the heads of their superiors.
It didn't matter to much anyway. If they couldn't find anything worth interest, they had to got to the next step; shake up the kid a bit. They were told that it would be difficult to take on the boy, but apparently, as long as he knew that he was being watched by others, it should be good enough until the final stage came. The three men shrugged as they took out various weapons; Wakizachi, kami, kunai, and others of the sort. Enough to show that they certainly meant business.
Another movement in the bushes and Chizuru suddenly clutched onto Kenji's sleeve. That was too big to be a squirrel. Soon enough, three dark figures darted out from the bushes very quickly. More Yakuza? No... they seemed to know what they were doing... perhaps they were after her? A kidnapping? It was most likely. Word must've surfaced that she was wandering around the city unattended; Well, sort of unattended. At least it was some excitment.
She narrowed her eyes. "What do you guys want?"
Meanwhile, Yahiko leaned by the doorway of the Akabeko, somewhat boredly as Tsubame finished off with her work. He was quite oblivious as to what was going on where Kenji and Chizuru were; or didn't care. Kenji was a big boy now, Yahiko didn't have to worry about him every second of the day. He yawned and streched slightly, not having a huge care in the world for now; all he had to do was bring Tsubame home and all would be well. But then again... he'd actually have to strike up a real conversation on his own... and he'd have to think about if he was walking to close or to far from her... or a bunch of other stuff! Well, so much for having a huge care in the world.
A few waitresses getting ready to take their shifts passed by him, giving a small glance and then giggled. Red-brown eyes blinked. Was there something on his face? Or perhaps they were reading his mind about the whole Tsubame thing? You could never tell with women. They were very mysterious in the sense that you could never tell what they're thinking or what they plan on doing... unless it's during a fight. But he never really fought with that many; only Kaoru really... and even then, she was difficult to understand as is. And for Tsubame, she was even harder to understand since she was so timid and quiet! He groaned slightly and covered his face with his hand. He hated it when there were to many things going on in his mind.
Meanwhile, the few waitresses that had passed by Yahiko were busy chitchatting themselves and made their way to a 'soon to depart' Tsubame and two other waitresses.
"Konban wa!" They called cheerfully as the other two replied with the same greeting.
"Well, well, Tsubame-chan! Yahiko-san is here to bring you home, is he?" One of girls said, a little sly smile on her face. "Or perhaps a little more?"
"Oh, enough of that, Kira-chan," Another replied, playfully slapping her on the shoulder. "He's just being a gentleman. After all, a bunch of Yakuza were in today giving her trouble. Quite frightening there for a bit!"
"Ah... I see how it is. Lucky girl! About time he finally started making a move. If you ask me, you should invite him in for something to eat, or some tea or something. You know, finally bring your relationship to the next level?" Kira nudged. "Finally become 'Mrs.' Myojin?"
The girls giggled a bit. They all knew that Tsubame was head over heels for the Shihan of the Dojo. Sure, he wasn't dashing or charismatic, or anything of the sort, but they knew he had a good heart and did want to look after their friend. Though apparently he was a little thick-headed about the whole marriage idea.
"Neh, Tatsuki-chan? You seem pretty preoccupied lately. Something on your mind?" Another waitress said to the other. Tatsuki blushed.
"Well... I was going to tell you all later after I told Yamada tonight... but... I'm having a baby!"
The ladies shrieked and hugged her excitiedly as most women seemed to do when they heard such an event going on. Excitement was in the air indeed!
"That's awesome, Tatsuki! You're going to be a mother! We were beginning to wonder when you were going to have one! This is great!"
"Na... Tsubame, now you're really going to have to at least get married soon! You'll just have to propose to Yahiko now!" One of them joked. All of the girls there were married, and a few of them even had one or two kids. They never really meant any of what they said to Tsubame, though they did feel bad for her since they knew that she probably wanted to have a family more than of of them.
"Or perhaps go for someone else at this rate. Yutaro-san seems to be extra friendly to you lately, no? Maybe this is a sign..."
"Oh please, Hiroko," Kira said. "Yahiko just needs a bit of a boost is all."
"Or a huge whack to the head."

Kenji listened intently to the girl as they walked through the silent nights of Tokyo above a deep blue blanket of stars and faint noises of parts of the world sleeping and others just becoming aware. It was weird, how things coexisted so easily, it was a shame people couldn't do quite the same job as animals and plants could. In the appropriate parts, he'd offer a sympathetic smile and a nod that yes, he was still listening and not drowning her out with the noises of their padded footsteps and branches bristling among the wind as they navigated toward a more wooded area. He perked an eyebrow but didn't bother saying anything in reply to her request. If she did this all the time, there couldn't be anything too bad, right? "I.. haven't had a life like that at all. I wonder what it's like, it sounds peaceful." The Sempai gave a contented smile, actually being sincere in his statement, before a couple of branches were snapped on the ground. Almost in an instant the swordsman's expression turned to concern, eyes narrowing and sword protectively strung across his hilt, ready to battle anything, even if it was just a squirrel. It was never a bad thing to be cautious, especially if it was woods. There could be bandits, thugs, anything hiding out here, waiting for a victim for some free money or a meal possibly.
It didn't take long until they revealed themselves though, and Kenji grimaced. A night of solitude wasted.. again. Did danger just attach itself to him, did it have something to do with this sakabatou? He shook his head, suddenly looking a bit more frustrated than needed. "Hey, I'm in the middle of trying to be a gentleman here, you want to step out of the way before I bash your heads in?" He was in no mood to have to be violent right now, not when peace was so close to his grip. What was he thinking, having a chance with someone like Chizuru? All he would do is threaten her life, what, with dangerous people always knocking at his door, just like his father.. but why? He wasn't a Battousai or anyone important, he was just a Sempai at his mother's Dojo. Was this hereditary?? Unsheathing his sword, the teen looked back at Chizuru and winked. "I'll take care of these guys in no time, so don't worry about a thing, okay? I'll protect you."
The waitress was wrapping up her work, placing her apron with care in its original place, ready for another day of work early that very next morning. Sighing very lightly, she headed out, being stopped by a couple of her friends she worked with- oh no. Not another one of these episodes. They were seemingly inevitable though, and Tsubame had no choice but to either heed these ladies' advice or just smile and nod, along with the occasional stutter and blush. Looking up, she flushed a deep red and put her hands over her face in total embarrassment. "A-A- No Kira-san!" Listening a little after, attempting to get over her utter mortification scene, she nodded dutifully and began messing with her hair to try to get away for the time being. She appreciated these girls trying to nudge her in the right direction, but Tsubame felt the right time would come when it was ready, and obviously neither of them were if they never even talked about going out with each other formally. Mr--Mrs. Myojin!? She leaned her head back and whined a little bit out of embarrassment again, her face an unbearable red flush as she gave the statement some thought. Well, it WAS what she wanted, right? Stop, Tsubame! You'll start having weird fantasies if you put yourselves in these women's shoes!
The waitress then found out, like the rest of them, that Tatsuki was going to have a baby! "Oh, how wonderful!" She blurted out, then becoming quiet again as all the girls began fawning over each other at the wonder of being pregnant. Personally, Tsubame loved children, and one day wanted many of her own, but it seemed so far in the future, like she couldn't reach it. There was only one person she wanted to be with. Then it got turned back on her again rather unexpectedly. "M-me?! I can't do that! A-.." She never even thought about Yutaro that way, how odd people paired up couples that way! A nudge, a boost, a whack in the head, whatever it was, Tsubame hoped he would come around sooner or later, they weren't getting any younger after all. Her dream of them turning adults and him even just asking her out once in a while hadn't come true, but she didn't give up hope- never ever. That was what Yahiko had told her in the first place, right? Perhaps he was planning on saying something on their walk home! Yes, she could hope for that! Laughing heartily, the waitress waved as they neared the entrance, bidding them goodbye until tomorrow. Shortly walking out to Yahiko, she blushed a little, tracing the dirt around her shoe before poking her fingers together. "G-gomen, I got caught up talking to some girls. I hope this doesn't hold you up from going back home."

"Oh, stop apologizing," Yahiko replied, sliding the door shut behind them. "It's nothing serious. Besides, Kenji is still probably chatting it up with Raikoji. If I end up home a little late, it's not the end of the world."
He scratched the back of his head. As much as he cared for Tsubame, he did wish that she stood up for herself now and then. She was always so softspoken and timid. She'd said sorry more than Kenshin used to say 'Oro'. This was why she was always pushed around by those Yakuza! Then again, if she wasn't the way that she was now, then there'd be no one to balance out Yahiko; the king of loudmouths. So, perhaps it was better this way. Still, if she stood up for herself once and awhile, it wouldn't be a crime.
As they walked down the road, the spikey-haired Shihan thought of things to say. Jeeze... practically thirty and he still had the mentality of a teenage boy. He really needed to start thinking of rearranging his thought process. No pun intended.
"So... what have you been up to lately?" He asked, looking up at the sky. "It's been awhile since we just hung out, you and I. 'Guess it's my fault, haven't really been around," Other than managing the dojo, Yahiko had been travelling around a bit to help out here and their with the Kamiya Kasshin Spirit, much like he used to back when he was still a teen. He felt bad that he didn't spend as much time with her like they used to, but it wasn't surprising either. He knew it was bound to happen, unless he asked to marry her. The more he thought about it, the more he asked himself why didn't he ask her? Yakuza still hassle her, and it's pretty obvious that they were both pretty close even if they weren't considered 'a couple'. However, maybe he did it because he knew that stronger enemies would try to harm her far more than any other person. He knew that from the experiences of Kaoru and Kenshin, that someone would always attack the person that you cared for the most.
Maybe it was better that they didn't see each other as often. It was safer for her.
Chizuru looked up at the confident red-head and flushed slightly. Those words... it was weird. She barely knew Kenji, but she knew that the last sentence was very sincere. She let go of his sleeve and nodded. "Thanks... Himura-kun. Now... go kick some a**!" She grinned confidently, looking at the men. She knew that they were going to get it.
One of the men scoffed. "Please, we're not here to play around. We're just a little curious on what makes you tick," One of them unsheathed a wakizachi. "For instance, what angers you more? Us trying to make you bleed, or us taking off the head of your little girlfriend there?" The two others laughed, giving sinister looks at the raven-haired teen.
((Ugh... I'm like... braindead right now. Forgiveness please. The writer's block has a firm grasp on me.))

Tsubame looked over at Yahiko as they walked quietly through the road, feeling a weird sense of comfort for the first time in a long time. He always made her feel safe, no matter how many dangers would come his way, she had full confidence that no matter what happened, it would always get resolved. Like Kenshin and Kaoru- it's not the fact that there were hardships, but every time the willpower and love the two held for each other always brought them together again- even in the moment of their deaths; and it inspired Tsubame beyond initial recognition. Every time she thought of how their bonding could strengthen through that simple relationship, it made her heart hesitate a beat, the exhilaration of spending a lifetime with someone you cared about most was the only thing the waitress had ever wanted, even from when those people were her parents. Snapping out of her thoughts, she nodded to Yahiko's response, she could understand that he was busy all the time; she had been too, with the rush of customers in the Akabeko. But every moment of his company filled her with happiness and made her want to work that much harder towards that hopeful goal that would one day get achieved- it just had to. But slowly the waitress was beginning to think that Yahiko wasn't as fond of her, didn't enjoy her company quite as much as she did his, and was perhaps losing faith in what they had together, this strange relationship of theirs.
And suddenly, before she knew it, she had tripped on a pebble in the street, falling forward towards Yahiko and letting out a slight squeak in surprise. Falling forward, she squinted, tears coming to her eyes as the thought she'd been supressing for so long brought its way to the front of her mind. She just couldn't hold it in anymore, it was like something broke in her, and she just had to blurt it all out. "I-- I don't want to be away from you anymore, Yahiko. Even if I'm put into danger, I want to be by your side no matter what, because I know everything will always be all right- I want to have what Kenshin and Kaoru had-- I.. I'm not afraid to sacrifice that anymore.. I.." as Tsubame went on, she just realized everything she just confessed, and it brought an incredulous flush to her face as she quickly placed her hands over her mouth, the tears slowly streaming down as she regained her stance and ran past him, dropping her sash she always held in her hands as the buildings flew past her vision in a teary blur. So stupid, Tsubame! What was she doing, confessing something like that to him out of nowhere like that? The Shihan probably wasn't ready to hear such a strong commitment like that, that was obviously why he hadn't inclined them being any more than friends, right? In her blind running, Tsubame was unknowingly headed towards the more forested parts of Tokyo, taking a sharp turn to where ironically Kenji and Chizuru had just passed. Because of the kimono she was wearing, the waitress didn't have much lee-way, so she tripped clumsily over a stump, scraping her hands on the path and dropping her bag that held her lunch every day. She gasped, trying to pull herself up as she looked around, now trees and gravel surrounding her. What was going on..?
Maybe it was all just a hopeless fallacy in her mind that Yahiko had the same feelings about her that she did him.
Looking over to the men, it was obvious they were trying to figure out something about him, the fight wasn't the part that mattered to them. But what else would they want? What ticked him off? Well he wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of knowing that; it was what they wanted after all. "Like I'm telling you anything. Who do you work for?" Waving the sakabatou in the air as a somewhat imitation move to what he saw his dad do sometimes, Kenji readied the blade and zoomed forward, apparating in different places almost simultaneously as he jutted the end of the sword to the man and quickly disposed of the other one with a diagonal slash to his chest. This was ridiculous- wouldn't they send at least stronger men to stand up on their confrontation? Perhaps it was better they would get out of there faster, it would dispose of the mess quicker, they were in the woods as well. "I don't know who you are, but I suggest you keep your distance from me." He grimaced at them with menacing eyes before turning to Chizuru and smiling gently and backoning her to carry on; these guys weren't about to get up for a little while. "That was odd.. I wonder what they wanted from me.." It worried the Sempai that people were now after him, trying to figure out information, looks like he'll have to keep a close eye on Chizuru and possibly tell Yahiko to monitor Tsubame until things settled down a bit.
"You wouldn't mind if I come to your house in the morning to escort you to the Dojo, would you? Just until I'm sure those guys keep their distance, you could be in danger, and I don't want you to get hurt because of me." On another side of the coin, it was a good excuse for Kenji to spend more time with Chizuru, and could be for Yahiko with Tsubame as well. Talk about things having good and bad sides to them with opposite effects. For now, the teen was just scared she would get the wrong impression and tell him no, or something else of rejection.

It felt as though so many things were happening at once, it was hard for the spikey-haired shihan to fully keep up with it. He flushed almost as much as Tsubame did for those few moments, but quickly regained his composure. That wasn't going to do much though... how was he going to deal with this? Tsubame had just practically poured out her feelings for the first time... he didn't think she was going to gain her confidence right after he thought that she should. And it was for a completely different thing that what he had in mind for speaking her mind. Before he had time to process this information and give a reply, Tsubame had run off. He felt like a jerk right now, but he didn't have the time to beat himself over it. It was already pretty dark as is, so he had to go after her before anything really serious would happen. In a matter of moments, Yahiko dashed off after her.
Luckily for him, the waitress was still a bit on the clumsy side, so she didn't get far. Even if she was still running, it wouldn't take that long for Yahiko to catch up. Though he was no Kenji or Kenshin at speed, he still was faster than the average person. Once he caught up, his red-brown eyes looked around slightly, making sure there wasn't anything waiting to jump out at them from the forest. It seemed okay to let his guard down for now. Quickly, he grabbed Tsubame's bag and then approached the woman slowly.
His expression was quite different than any he had had before; it was serious, but not the way he usually would potray it. His eyes, unmoving, had an apologizing look in them and even had a innocent gaze. That was definantly a first for the ex-pickpocket. No matter how Yahiko felt, he had always been known for having a very tough looking face whether he was happy, angry, sad, or afraid. It was quite out of character. Not as out of character as what he was about to do next though.
Very suddenly, Yahiko pulled Tsubame close to him and almost involentarily, leaned down slightly and kissed her. For a second, he was actually surprised himself, but he knew that for once, he had to be straightforward with her, just as she was with him those few moments ago. It was going to be a little difficult coming up with the right words, but he'd definantly try. For this one time, he hoped that he could find what he wanted to say as easily as Kenshin used to be able to do.
"Tsubame... you don't know how much I want to be with you," Yahiko began, a little shakily. "And hearing you say what you said... well... you wouldn't believe how much I wanted to hear that. You were always the one I wanted, Tsubame, from day one. However..." His eyes shifted down, looking very guilty. "Even after all of this, I really can't be with you. Tsubame, I took an oath to protect you anyway I can. But... I... I can't keep you as safe as I want to if you become even closer. People... people will find a way to use that against you and I. I don't want you going through any of the things that Kaoru had to go through," Flashbacks of times long ago came back. The times were his teacher had almost been killed at the hand of an enemy... no... he didn't want that fate for Tsubame, no matter what she said about it.
"Please... try to understand," He held her tightly as a night breeze passed through. If there was only going to be one moment like this with Tsubame, then he wanted it to last just a little.
Meanwhile, Chizuru was awed by how fast Kenji had taken care of those men. Once more, it was just amazing to see the red-head fight with such ease. With a wide grin on her face she clapped. "Aww man! I bet my grandfather would higher you on the spot to train our bodyguards! You really never cease to amaze me, Himura-kun! It's just insane how you can take care of a number of men and treat them like yesterday's garbage!" She patted the young man on the shoulder. "As for escorting me to the dojo, that'd be great! That way, my grandfather won't freak out either. But are you completely sure they're after you?" she tilted her head. She was so used to being the target, it seemed odd that someone else she knew could be in danger. "But if it's really you that they're after... do you need any other help? I mean, I'm sure there must be something my family could do for you..."
She placed her hand under her chin slightly as she continued to walk down the path beside him, completely forgetting about the fellows laying on the ground unconscious. Meh, they'd be fine later. The mansion was insight now, lights glittering elegantly, as though it was lit up by tons of fireflies.
"Well, if you do think of anything that you may need help with, seeing that you're clearly capable of handling yourself. But... don't hesitate to ask if you do need something!" A warm smiled went over her face as her eyes lit up.

The waitress mumbled some incoherent frustrations as she grabbed a handful of dirt in her fists, trying to pull herself up but being assisted by something else than her own force and willpower. She closed her eyes shut forcefully, though being pulled with unusual gentleness and then being brought into a kiss. Was this for real..? She must be waking up right now, disappointed yet again at the unbelievable feelings that were bursting out of her from the embrace. This time it was too real to be a dream, her hazel eyes widened and she slowly wrapped her arms around the Shihan- something she'd been yearning to do for years past. Would things finally.. would that distant far fetched dream become potential for reality? Tsubame had to repeatedly blink her eyes to make sure this wasn't just a dream, that it wouldn't turn into a horrible nightmare that she'd been dreading. The words he began speaking were beyond anything she'd ever wanted to hear from him, and a gentle smile caressed her expression as the spiky haired swordsman continued on with his miniature speech to her. Then Yahiko's expression changed, and she could already feel the nightmare beginning, shrouding her vision with chagrin. "Even after all of this, I really can't be with you" Those words.. they stabbed her; each connotation, each enunciation, every single letter sounded from him stabbed her with an unbearable pain that weighted on her heart. Once again, the waitress could feel the tears beginning to well up in her eyes as she shook her head frantically, reaching her hand up to grip his keikogi, her head eyes downcast as the tears began flowing in a chronic and constant flow.
"All that doesn't matter to me! Don't you see I'd do anything to be with you, even if that means putting my life in jeopardy; none of that matters. I don't want to have to go through another day knowing I have to stay away from you for those reasons- I can't bear it anymore. Can't you understand that Kaoru did that of her own free will, that's the life she wanted, and it's the life I want too! Any other life doesn't matter to me! I'm not complete if I can't be with you.. I.. I ca-can't.." No, and she wouldn't accept that of him. Tsubame saw Kaoru's life unfold just like he did, perhaps not as in depth, but she could see the suffering and all of the pain Kaoru had to go through- but in the end it was what she chose and wanted, and in her heart she was the happiest living that life even if it was only five minutes of being in Kenshin's company at a time. Why did things have to be like this? There was no point in trying to get up, not that she wanted to, but her frustration left her hands shaking and tears continuing to flow down her face, making her nose and cheeks slightly red as she sat there in Yahiko's arms, a dream collided and smashed all at the same time.
The swordsman gave a somewhat confident grin as he took a hand and ruffled some of his firey hair as they began walking toward the mansion again. "Ah, no, really. It's nothing." Then suddenly she said it, and he couldn't believe it. "Really? That's great! I mean.. I really don't know what those guys wanted. But in case it's a tactic to try to get to you, I won't let them." Does that mean he'll get to spend more time with her? Yeeess. The large abode appeared as Chizuru gave some kind requests, but Kenji was mostly focused on the size and elegance of it all. "Wow.. this is absolutely amazing.. you live here?" He was so unaccostomed to seeing such things, the Dojo was so inviting and snug in the size department he'd never even given the recognition that people still lived in houses this big. Why does anyone need that much space anyhow?
Not that it mattered, he shook his head and they walked up to the door. "That's really kind of you, but I think some sneaky investigation and just paying attention to things around me will be fine. I'll see you tomorrow morning then?" He returned her smile with one of his own, not really knowing what to do to wish her off goodbye until the morning, a slight blush reaching his features before he began stepping down the stairs again, waving to her as he began to head off into the woods again, though making sure she made it safely inside before completely turning his back on her. Then Kenji's thoughts turned to his friend- how were him and Tsubame doing? Probably another awkward silence home with some small-talk, he assumed, though he was far from what was actually still occurring in his path.

Red-brown eyes looked at her once more. He hated this. He never wanted to make her cry, but there she was... what was he suppose to do? He felt like a small child, looking to someone, anyone to give him some guidance right now. Kenshin, Kaoru, hell even Sanosuke would do right now. What would they say...? What should he do? Even after all these years of fighting, in reality... he still felt like that ten-year-old boy who was first taken into the Kamiya Kasshin Dojo. Why couldn't he be stronger? That was his whole goal, wasn't it? To be able to defend himself as well as protect others? But, if this was all true, then why was the one that he loved the most crying because of him?
At this point though, he couldn't help but laugh a bit at the situation. "After all these years of me telling you to stand up for yourself and not to give into anyone... you had to listen to me now... didn't you?" Still holding onto her tightly he slumped down against a sturdy oak tree. "It figures..."
The air smelt nice and with the exception of the breeze, the night felt calm. If only it could only stay like this forever. It felt weird... for once, Yahiko didn't want to look for any action or do anything brash, he just wanted to settle down with her and deal and protect things in his life, not all around Japan. He looked up at the moon. He had followed in Kenshin's footsteps for so long now that he forgot that he had to make his own choices. When Kenshin had left those many years, he had seen how it hurt Kaoru to be away from him, not knowing if he would be back again. However, Yahiko didn't necessarily have to choose that path. There was the next generation now; not just Kenji, but many of the Kamiya Kasshin students. Many of them were now capable of protecting the ones they loved. Maybe... maybe it was time that the Shihan just took a different path. Would it be possible?
As much as he wanted to do this, he knew that he wouldn't be able to this all right away. The Yukio boy and the Yakuza gang from today screamed a huge problem. He was no idiot when it came to that. He knew that giving into what he wanted to do now would be stupid and no matter what Tsubame said about not caring if her life was in jepordy, Yahiko did care. He would not lose her like that. He'd never forgive himself if any blood was shed from her body. If he could find out the source of this problem, how big it is, and escape from it, then maybe... maybe he could live with Tsubame and not have to worry about what could happen to her. Maybe he can erase himself from history so that no one would track him down anymore. In a way, he felt selfish wanting to do this, but he knew that he'd be leaving his old life in good hands; Kenji, Outa, Kosaburo, Yutaro, and many others. And when their time would come, they'd pass it down to the next generation and so forth. The sword of the Kamiya Kasshin style, as well as Kenshin's beliefs, would still go on.
It's amazing what one could think up in matter of ten minutes of just sitting in the night. For now, this would be his plan and hopefully, he'd be able to execute it.
Gently, he placed one of his hands under Tsubame's chin and looked into her eyes again. "I know this is selfish of me, Tsubame, making you wait all this time, but... do you think you can wait a little longer for me? There's something that I'm very unsure of going on... something bad. I need to get to the bottom of it, but I can't do that if I keep on thinking of how you might get hurt. Because, no matter what you say, I refuse to drag you into my world to far where you can get killed." His body tensed slightly just thinking of it. "When it is all done, I'll come back and meet you here at this very spot. I don't know when this will be, but I will do it,"
With that, spikey-headed male kissed her again and then gave her his usual confident smile.
"I Promise."
((And of course, this is where the audience goes 'Awww....' on cue. XD))

After a while, things began to come a little bit clear of their situation and why they'd never actually spoken about it before. But no matter how considerate Tsubame could be, she still didn't fully like it. She nervously laughed at his comment, realizing this was the first time she'd stood up for what she really wanted, perhaps this was the beginning of something else, a stronger Tsubame, for him. What other way to prove to him she had the capability of portraying strong traits? All through her early years, Tsubame admired Kaoru for her strong-headed characteristics, and finally she felt that her life could become filled with purpose, finally be worthwhile. Wait till the girls at the Akabeko hear this. The waitress blinked hard again, forcing herself to open her eyes to meet the Shihan's again, this time tears gone and hazel eyes intently gazing upon the determined ones in front of her. Somehow, she knew he wanted to be with her more than anything, this was becoming Kenshin and Kaoru's situation all over again. But even if Tsubame had to live a life waiting for Yahiko to come home with a wide cheery smile, if that was enough to make him happy at the end of the day, she was willing to live her life for that purpose. Finally, all those scattered thoughts of Kaoru becoming ill and those words she spoke to her, they all made so much sense- how she sacrificed even her own health to be one with Kenshin in the end. Even if the two of them led the same footsteps as their idols, even if they knew every detail of it was repeating history, it was what they both wanted, and knowing that, Tsubame felt that familiar sense of ease as she regained her collected state and managed a smile, nodding gratefully as she held his hand in hers.
"Even if I have to wait until I'm old and the sky falls down, I'll wait until I can't wait anymore- you've always known that. And I'll always welcome you back with a smile, and of course cook you much better food than you were raised on." Because, on the other hand, Tsubame had grown to be quite the cook. Even if she knew all the mistakes they were going to make, it didn't matter. I'd rather be a fool shrouded in bliss with you than be alone and aware of everything I do wrong. Still, all the events that had taken place in those simple ten minutes of her life would never be forgotten, not the gentle breeze nor the calm collected blanket of night above them with the trees, it brought utter euphoria to her thoughts. A couple of stray fireflies were visible through the foliage, it was just the romantic scene she'd always visualized as a child- almost like the prologue of her life was finished and it was time to begin the actual story.
She gave an earnest smile, something that couldn't possibly swipe off of her expression for awhile, and blushed slightly, realizing all that had just occurred. "I'm holding you to your word, Mr. Shihan." A swordsman's word was the most virtuous, she didn't expect anything less of the now matured swordsman. I bet Kaoru would be so proud of him.. Suddenly, a strange idea came to her mind. She slowly got up, making sure not to trip on a stray pebble or even her own shoes, beckoning Yahiko to follow her. "Let's go see Kaoru and Kenshin." Just being able to see the cherry blossoms would put them at ease, even more than they were now, and possibly guidance where they thought the path would lead them astray. There was always something to learn in the presence of their passing. However, she wasn't quite sure if Kenji had been able to see his parents since he was shown their location- it was too hard on him to have to see their graves at such a young age. It was such a tragedy, the fate and lives of those two, but with it brought prosperity and the symbolism that no matter what, you had to move on and go with life, no matter what it threw at you. The tale of Kenshin and Kaoru brought constant inspiration to Tsubame's life, she held the two in such high regard, and hoped she could live up to the void of Yahiko's expectations from the old Dojo master someday. After all, she promised Kaoru she would take care of the empty-headed swordsman, he couldn't even cook a meal without Kenji!
Well, some things never change.
Instead of following the path down back to the Tokyo streets, Kenji decided to take a sharp unexpected turn as his feet guided the way to where the cherry blossoms were expected to bloom in a week or so. Seeing the faded pink blossoms glide along the wind was always a depressing time for the Sempai, often reminding him of his parents; it was the time of year Kaoru loved most, because that was always the time his father would come home. It was always the happy times he could recall, under these same cherry blossoms, that collided with his tragedy. No matter how he looked at it, he was alone, with no true family left unless you counted Hiko. It was an odd thing, to mention family around him. Chizuru must have lots of family, a grandpa, cousins, everything. But Kenji was the only Himura you'd find in all of Japan. Solemn coated irises gazed over the darkened grass leading up to the inconspicuous graves ahead- he hadn't gathered the courage to look to these since his early teen years, despite how he'd repeatedly told himself that he was over their deaths. This time of his life was when the swordsman would've wanted parental guidance more than anything, and in the times where his mother was around, he was too conceited and involved with his training and turned a blind eye towards what the real problem was. She suffered in the times when she needed him most, and it consumed him with guilt that he never really knew either of his parents like anyone else had; it was like he was standing beside the graves of two strangers that raised him.
But why? What was his purpose anyhow? The teen slowly fell to his knees, setting the sakabatou in front of Kenshin's grave and giving a stern look at the ground before clenching his fists in frustration. There was still resentment, there was still that tiny juvenile hatred in him, no matter how much Kenji wanted to deny it. For leaving both of them alone like that, to fulfill what he had to.. why would his mother want to live a life full of loneliness and pain? The swordsman was blinded by his own memories for a moment, refusing to allow any of those unshed tears to be shown to the world in front of them, just the three of them alone in the night above the buds of the cherry blossoms. If there was any way, any way at all he could turn back the clock just to glimpse through both of their lives, -know- what kind of people they truly were, and their lives, the Sempai wanted it more than anything. To understand. Still, after all this time, he couldn't allow himself to let go of all those welled up feelings, every time he used that sakabatou to use Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu Kenji felt like he was beginning to understand more and more, yet when he kneeled in front of the two of them, he felt like he still knew nothing; was nothing but a child again, just a burden.
"I.. I want to understand.. why.." he simply mumbled to himself, finally releasing the amount of tension in his arms and sighing as a single tear fell onto the soil below him and soaked into the earth, left to be alone in the night, as he was right now.
It seems some things never do change.
[[Aww. That was adorable >w<;; I also have some more ideas brewing around.. << so I hope you get on sometime tonight so we can talk about them xD They're pretty interesting.]]

Yahiko Myojin blinked for a moment as he looked up at Tsubame. To visit Kenshin and Kaoru... it had been such a long time since he had done so. He used to do it often before often on his own. Even though they had departed, he still felt at ease whenever he went to their graves, as though it was like the old days. Voices would form in his head, knowing exactly what they would say if they were around. Even now, he knew exactly what the two would say.
"Well it's about time you came! Jeeze, you think that just because you're the number one fighter in all of Japan you can just come and go whenever you want, not bothering to even check up on us? Typical of you, Yahiko," A very cross-looking woman would just stare at her former student, annoyingly, expecting a half-a** excuse that would eventually lead into an arguement as usual. Meanwhile, Kenshin's would just observe the two, not wanting to get in the middle, but instead just smiling gently, waiting for them to stop so that he could get his word in. Though it hurt Yahiko knowing that they weren't around, he knew that he had no choice but to accept it.
As they walked down the path to the sakura trees, Yahiko couldn't help but smile to himself slightly. It really didn't feel that long ago when the Kenshingumi were all together as a family. They had all went their seperate ways that day several years ago... he thought about it though. Maybe someday, he should contact the remaining members sometime. Megumi probably could use a vacation and he was sure that the Weasel girl and Aoshi would come over without a fuss. Maybe when everything was calm. It was about time they all joined together during a happy celebration.
Once they reached the gravestones, the Shihan was quite surprised to see Kenji there kneeling near the couple. He certainly didn't expect to see him there at all. Then again, he didn't expect himself to be here tonight either. A half smile came surfaced over his face as he quietly walked up behind the young man. Strongly, Yahiko patted Kenji on the shoulder as he looked over to Kenshin and Kaoru. "I'm sure they greatly appreciate you coming here right now," He began. "Right you two? Sorry we haven't been here to visit to often... been busy ya know? You know how crazy it's been without you two here to protect Japan? Everyone now decides that they want to be damsels in distress. I tell ya, it gets real annoying sometimes. I can only take so much of someone screaming 'Help me!'. I still don't know how you were able to continue hearing those words day after day, Kenshin," A full grin appeared on him. He didn't expect a real answer from them, but it always made him feel about the situation, talking to them and by the looks of it, it looked as though the young Himura could use some cheering up.

She nodded, and their trip was relatively silent through the trees and yet to be flowers that shrouded them almost with a sense of protection, almost like Kenshin had never left and was still atoning for his sins with that sakabatou of his. But this time it was in good hands, with Yahiko and Kenji, so surely they would make sure its cause for existence would only go to the common good for the people of Japan. And Tsubame had no doubt they would continue the legacy. Though as they came, she didn't expect to see Kenji kneeling over their grave, it was sad to see how hard the teen had taken the death of his parents, then again, the waitress felt the same way in the beginning when her parents had abandoned her. But now that she had the honor of having such kind and valiant people around her, people that would protect her and love her, there was no more doubt to behold in those strong hazel eyes of hers. No more suffering, no more pain, those departed would always have a special place in their hearts, and that's all that mattered. Tsubame smiled gently and giggled as Yahiko rambled on and on, it was like the couple had never left and were standing right in front of them- she could already see Kaoru's blood boiling and Kenshin's genuine smile replacing those gravestones, yet it would be a bit more difficult to get Kenji to see this as well.
The waitress walked up beside Yahiko, remaining with her glowing smile and looked down at the two stones in front of her, shaking her head slightly and holding Yahiko's hand gently, a blush creeping over her cheeks. "Ayaa, Kaoru-chan, it's been so difficult not having everyone come to the Akabeko like they used to, it always got so crazy! We miss you all so much, especially you, Himura-san. But don't worry- these two have been protecting Japan as if you had never left, so no more worrying, okay? This country is in good hands now, passed down from you to us, and no matter what, I will put my life on the line protecting and respecting that." It was only rightful that she give her condolences, it lifted some uncertainties off her shoulders even though she got no response, it was strange, this beyond-the-living conversation. But even the littlest bit helped.
It was difficult, very difficult to take into account everything the two of them had said, but what was the use in mourning when nothing would bring them back? There was still that denial at the pit of his throat, but he was tired of being so pitiful, he had a country to protect in place of his father. There was no time to waste. He lightly smiled, ever so lightly as he rised from their grave stones, blinking a few times to readjust his focus and look to the two of them standing beside him. In a strange way, they would guide him like his parents had until their departure, and even though things will probably get messy in the future, Kenji was willing to take that sacrifice for everyone. "I just.. I miss them so much. Strange to say, yeah, I miss him.." It was highly strange to be speaking aloud like this to himself, and even though some wounds from their deaths wouldn't heal, all you could do was move forward in life and hope for the better. After all, Chizuru could be the beginning of this healing, unbeknownst to the teen presently, that is. Perhaps there was still that window of happiness, and no matter what, he was going to reach for it, no matter what the consequences. Even if I make all the same mistakes they did. Maybe it was a fool's dream, but he was ready to walk that path, that strange parallel path that his father took, and start a new beginning to healing. For everyone.
Slightly clenching his fist, a new power thrust him, and he looked to Yahiko with glowing indigo eyes; determination perhaps? "Yahiko- I want to go back to Hiko's and finish learning Hiten Mitsurugi." Probably not the reaction the Shihan would expect from him, but it was time to finish what he'd started, and to protect those he loved, he would have to borrow something of his father's just this time, besides the sakabatou. Kenji needed another strength to fight this new foe threatening the people around him. Even if it meant making the wrong decision, he would protect those he loved.

It really did feel as though they were back when they looked at their graves, and hearing Tsubame's input as well felt very comforting. Why... why did they have to go at such an early age? He really hated it, but he knew that he had to take this in a mature matter and continue on with his life. Crying or getting angry wasn't going to bring them back.
His attention then went to the younger Himura when he asked the question. He had to say, he wasn't expecting that question at all. Well, not right now anyway. Obviously, there was a lot going through Kenji's head, that Yahiko could only assume. He scratched the back of his neck, trying to think of what to say right now. He took a deep breath, but smiled in his usual confident way.
"Well..." he began, crossing his arms. "You are beyond your coming of age, so I can't really stop you from doing that. Besides, at your age, I had been to Hokkaido and back. So... I guess that I can let you head back to Hiko," He had only met the Sensei a few times, but he had gotten to know him enough to consider him an aquaintance. Sure, he was arrogant, and a bit of a jerk, but he was a master swordsman who knew what he was talking about. Maybe he could even aid in some of the odd things that was going on.
"Before you do anything right away though, I have a few things I want to talk to you about when we get back home tonight..."
((Sorry. My brain is like... super broken.))

Looking down at their subtle graves, the teen gave a light sigh, feeling a slight breeze pass through the area, hopefully bringing better weather and thoughts to the three surrounding Kenshin and Kaoru's gravestones. Sure, it was a selfish request, but technically the Shihan was right- it's not like he could stop Kenji from going back to Kyoto, though it would be a long road ahead to get there. Perhaps he wouldn't leave right away though- there was time, hopefully, for a little notice before his departure. Hiko was.. a very interesting character to say in the least, almost like a hermit, staying away from people in his cabin up in the part of Kyoto no one inhabited. But he had his reasons, obviously, and Kenji respected that. Currently he was the closest person to Kenshin, knew the most about him, probably even more than his mother did, so by going eventually the Sempai could gain more knowledge and understanding, one of the things he'd been striving for this whole time in a wave of confusion to his parents' unexpected deaths. Amidst his thoughts though, the teen didn't expect Yahiko to undertake a serious tone of the matter, what could he possibly request of him before he left? At the moment, the swordsman honestly didn't know, perhaps the Shihan knew something about those thugs that intervened on Chizuru's recent trip home, or those Yakuza guys from earlier. Whatever it may be, it didn't sound good.
Kenji gave a slight frown, nodding in compliance and glancing over to Tsubame, her expression slightly troubled at the tone of the situation. Blinking with inquisitive indigo irises, the teen turned around slowly, giving an obvious sign that he was ready to leave, staring at something that wouldn't come back for too long could awaken some feelings he didn't want to encounter again; it simply hurt too much. For now he was going to leave those doors unopened, until next time when it was necessary. A gentle nature took over his features and he approached the end of the array of trees, waiting for Yahiko and Tsubame to say their goodbyes before their walk and talk back to the Dojo.
Tsubame didn't say much throughout the small discussion that did go through, this was more of a personal bond between the two of them, and she didn't want to interfere. However, just as fast as they had mentioned anything, it was lost in the breeze again, becoming unspoken whispers in the wind as Kenji began walking away from the grave sites. Looking to Yahiko with a resounding smile she nodded, adjusting the scarf wrapped around her arms before taking a few steps as well. "This is fine, I can walk home from here. You talk with Kenji-kun, maybe I'll see you tomorrow at the Akabeko? There's a special for lunch tomorrow." It was still incredulous to think that they had even embraced in such an intimate way only moments beforehand, kissed even. It made the waitress feel lightheaded with ecstasy- almost like it had just been a dream and she was about to wake up any minute. Shaking her head slightly to remove that dizziness, Tsubame waved goodbye to the Shihan and began walking complacently back to her house which was just down the street. Though, pondering it, the last Himura leaving for a period of time would make an odd gap for everyone.
