I HATE that word used in that context!
No object or action can be "gay".
I have some gay friends (me being bisexual myself) and one of those who don't care and like to pick on people say it exclusively around them to make them sad, and it works!
I hate that for them, cause when I tell them to use a different word, they just laugh and say things like "make me" or "just shut up Kenzie" or "it's true"...
Cause it's not true. That hurts people. It hurts just as much when fat people are made fun of, or hungers are made fun of, or short people are made fun of... This is making fun of gay people.
As for me, I hear it so much that I'm about to punch the next person to use it. I find it rude and disrespectful.
So my answer is yes. It bothers me to my core.

I ******** LOVE saying it. But not in a negative manner. Usually when my friends start acting stupid to make me laugh I'll say, 'You're so gay!' And sometimes when I say it in a negative way (like towards a movie or person) I say, "Not the good kind of gay either, the bad kind of gay." I honestly don't know how gay can be good or bad, but the good kind of gay is like, the hot boy on boy gay that girls squeal over.
I can tell how annoying it must be for some people when they hear "That's so gay!" because then it's like, "How the heck is that (enter place, person, thing) homosexual?" lol I like saying that as well. Hypocrite much? Anyway, 'That's so gay!' is okay to say in my opinion .....OMG I AM A RHYMING FOOL! whee
Now using the word 'f*****t' (and not as in cigarette) is like... you need to be slapped. I don't know why... it's just, that word is more.. powerful/negative than 'gay'.

Can I ask the same people who don't care this question? Would it be okay if I started exclaiming when ever I was upset by something, "That's so DOWN SYNDROME!" Is that alright?
No. It's not. It's hurtful and it's mean and it should be stopped.
And a lot of you think, "Well, I'm gay and I don't have a problem with it." That doesn't make it okay, either. Because some where, a kid is trapped in the closet because they think it's wrong to be gay, because of that kind of attitude. It may not hurt you, someone who is already out of the closet or close to it. But to them, it could keep them in there for the rest of their lives, which they may even end up taking just so they don't have to endure the pain.
If you want to say something is stupid, say it's stupid. Peoples feelings are going to get hurt and it isn't right. Stop saying "that's gay," "that's retarded," and things similar to it. Say anything else, as long as it isn't offensive to other people. Really, just think before you speak.
A lot of you will disagree with me, and I'm sorry. But it just isn't alright.

I dont mind when people use it, I don't tale offence to it...(probably because I'm bi) though I try and refrain from using it as much as possible, sense it does offend people...
Fagot on the other hand, is completely ok to say, depending on the context.. in my opinion South Park hit the nail on the head when they did the biker episode... It's like calling someone a doushe, your calling them an a**, not a female hygienic product... When it is used as a Homophobic insult, that is when it bothers me....

I only mind it because I'm in highschool. I'm half-way out of the "closet", so it mostly just annoys me that people will use it for practically everything. My school has its own GSA, and they also were advocating the use of a broader vocabulary.

Although I'm not easily offended by much, using "gay" as an offesive/negative term is pathetic. It doesn't offend me due to the fact that I'm straight, but it's really irritating to have some airhead say that and laugh because they think it makes them sound so "badass." Here's a newsflash to them - it doesn't. It just shows the lack of competence they have in the first place.
And don't get me started on "retard."

I posted in a topic like this in ED a while back. Using "gay" in this particular way really does drive me nuts for two reasons.
1. I don't always know if the person I'm talking to is a bigot or not. When you say, "Oh, I don't mean it that way," I just think... how the hell am I supposed to tell which way you mean it? If you don't mean it that way, why are you saying it that way? Because a hell of a lot of people DO mean it "that way." If your intention isn't to use a homophobic slur, then why are you using a homophobic slur?
2. It sounds unintelligent and tacky. It's just an ugly phrase. It's like a cheese grater across my eardrums. It was so abused in middle school and high school I just associate it with immature morons and their stupid drama. Is it really that goddamn hard to find a new word?

I'm guilty of frequently using "That's so gay I'd buy it a drink."
I don't use it outside of that sense. I just enjoy the crummy joke and how it warps the phrase.
As for general use, if it's used to express a negative but harmless opinion, such as "That strip club was pretty gay; none of the dancers knew what they were doing," I have no problem with that. There are more precise words that can be used, but I'm not a stickler. "Don't be gay" is infuriating though.
It all depends on context for me.

I used to be offended by it until I realized that words are just that and the word gay has changed meanings around a dozen times
its most common is to be used to express dislike of something and it can be confusing since people still use some of the other meanings but people no longer talk about the curve of a dogs tail with the term gay and it will continue to evolve as its use is appropriated by different groups
