Flicking her tail again, a necklace fell from her fluff, using her nose to nudge it to the vixen. "It was horrid. But I didn't want to leave until I got you the present."
The necklace was a small little paper crane, but to Abby it looked like a strange, malformed bird. Still, it looked pretty to her, despite how weird it was, and she only hoped the other vixen liked it.

"Oh," Merit breathed, carefully turning the necklace over with her paw as she bent to examine it closer. She spent a long moment just staring, eyes roaming over all the dips and folds as she marveled that something like that could be made into jewelry.
She looked back up, her eyes bright. "Oh, sweetie," she breathed, trying not to start crying, "I ain't ever had something so pretty before!" She hooked her paw through the chain and gingerly eased the jewelry around her neck. Looking down at the dangling little paper bird, she made a worried expression.
"I tell ya, I'm scared t' heck I'm gonna somehow destroy it. I'd be just crushed if I did, 'specially since you went through so much trouble t' get this f'r me."

She liked it? Smiling wide, the little vixen wiggled slightly before folding her paws. "I promise I'll get you more gifts." She whispered nervously, tail twitching. "I saw it though, and it's pretty and dainty, just like you."
The way she spoke was obviously not just for flattery, she meant it. Merit was beautiful to her, and she was envious of her beauty. She also admired it. Smiling as the vixen put it over her neck she felt a small flutter in her chest. Merit liked something she gave her. She was happy with her. It made her happy.

Merit shook her head and leaned forward, pressing her forehead against Abby's. "Oh darlin', I don't need gifts to make me happy," she said softly, then pulled back. A curious emotion gleamed at the back of her eyes as she reached forward and lightly brushed a strand of Abby's bangs back.
"I'm jus' glad ya came back ta see me. You c'n call me silly-," she said, laughing quietly, "-but I've been t' the city before. Was worried near t' death about ya the whole time you were gone, wonderin' how you were gettin' on there. Not knowin'...."
Merit shook her head, feeling her throat tighten as though she was about to cry. "Anyway-," she said, forcing a smile and blinking overly bright eyes, "-I was just bein' a worrywart. Cain't help it, I always seem to worry when I can't watch over others."

Her mind almost sighed in relief when she was told gifts were not needed, it'd limit the amount of times she'd return to the city, though she planned to get Merit a gift in the future. Currently, she could rest.
Her eyes closed as suddenly a paw reached up, opening one eye as she felt hair being brushed aside. Her heart nearly stopped as her eyes met Merit's, mouth parting for a brief second. She was struck silent, eyes simply staring until finally she was broken from her awestruck state when Merit finished speaking. It was then she realized she had been staring, blushing brightly and looking down, fidgeting slightly with her paws.
"Ah, no. I don't think it's silly. I think it's sweet... t-that you worry, I mean. Not a lot of people are kind enough to worry about people like me. I like that about you. I mean, not that you worried about me! That you care enough about others!" Her blush darkened and she found herself fidgeting even worse. 'Great, act even dumber, fantastic.'

The brightness in Merit's eyes went back to normal as she chuckled quietly, leaning forward again to lightly press her shoulder against Abby's side.
"Well I could say th' same thing. All alone in that city, can't have been easy. And you take the time t' think about me and bring me back a gift. Ain't a whole lot of people in the world tha' care about others as much as that," she said, staring at Abby with honest and sincere eyes.

Merit had turned to look at her and Abby's little heart skyrocketed. She turned a faint red, Merit was too close. Suddenly, quickly, she leaned forward and licked Merit's cheek, nearly spazzing away, though she kept herself still.
"Of course I got you something. I r-really like you. You're super nice to me and really pretty and my first friend." Next time, she'd need to get Merit something less fragile, she concluded. Maybe something that went around the paw. If the vixen liked, that was. Next time, though, she would probably head for a town instead of the city.

Merit blinked, for once taken completely by surprise. It took her a second and several tries to find her voice again. And even as her heart suddenly swelled with emotion, her head tried to caution her. Abby had said it herself, Merit was one of her first friends. Such attachment could be mistaken for other emotions, and she wanted to be sure before she did anything.
She did, however, lean forward and nuzzle Abby, turning the friendly guesture into something just a touch more intimate.
"Oh darlin', it's really sweet to hear you say that," Merit said as she pulled back, beaming. "I might have to work on a lil surprise myself." There was a gentle, teasing note in her voice in the last bit, though she was entirely serious about that surprise.

Abby blushed as the woman nuzzled her, tail wagging gently in response. Her head shook, about to protest to the surprise, but she stopped. Instead, a question dawned on her, shocked.
"Oh! Does your tribe mind that I am here? Do they mind that you leave to see me?" She looked worried, which she was. She didn't know exactly how a tribe worked, she wasn't sure if her friend would get in trouble or not.

Merit paused for a moment, though really it didn’t take her long to answer the question. “I don’t think they’ll mind ya being here at all,” she said to reassure Abby first off. “We ain’t a hostile tribe, an’ even if we don’t play host all that often we don’t mind gettin’ the occasional visitor.”
She tilted her head. “I don’t think they’ll mind me off at all, long as I’m doin’ something like lookin’ for good plants t’ eat or herbs for eatin’ or healin’. There ain’t any kits in th’ tribe right that as needs lookin’ after, and no one injured as needs lookin’ after either, so I don’t gotta be there in the my official capacity. We don’t encourage sloth, so long as I’m doin’ something to help out the tribe I don’t think they’re gonna mind if I’m visiting a friend at the same time,” she said, giving Abby a cheerful smile.

Nodding, the fox bit her bottom lip in though. What if she helped the other, so she wasn't useless or taking the others time up without her gaining anything? Other than the necklace, of course.
"I could help? I mean, it isn't a bother for me, I hope it isn't for you! I like helping, and I don't have anything else to do.... I rarely ever do. I would mind it, it'd actually be quite fun..." The green and red vixen looked up at Merit curiously, ears flipped against her head when she realized how pathetic she sounded constantly.

Merit chuckled and pressed against Abby in a reassuring way. “Don’t need t’ sound so anxious darlin’, I never turn down help! Ya know what they say, one volunteer is better than ten unwilling,” she said in a cheerful voice, feeling a bubble of happiness in her heart that complimented the tone of her voice perfectly.
She eyed the green vixen curiously. “What kinda stuff do ya know? I cain’t remember if ya told me where exactly kinda lands ya grew up in.” She grinned a bit ruefully. “I’m forest born myself, but this area is a bit different from what I’m used to. Had to learn a bit about the local plant life from the tribe Elder and gatherers before I was much help. So don’t you worry your pretty head at all if you ain’t sure about what’s what here, I’m more than willin’ to teach ya,” Merit assured Abby.

She heaved a sigh of relief, tail wagging. She was glad Merit was so kind, a faint blush touching her cheeks as she heard the others happiness. Merit was so gentle and kind, it was a wonder why she even associated with the nervous wreck! She frowned at the mention of homelands, ears jerking backwards. Oh. She didn't consider anywhere her home, honestly. She refused to think of her birth place as home. It wasn't. Still, it was the one place she had spent most continuous time at.
"I come from the mountains in the North. I know how to fish and what berries are edible, but not much about plants. Could you really teach me?" She realized Merit was pressed against her, humming in her chest as she leaned slightly closer into the other.

Merit nodded, lightly nuzzling Abby’s cheek with a curious mixture of boldness and shyness. “I ain’t much of a fisher myself and I’m still learnin’ berries, though I c’n identify several now. Usually what I grab are herbs. It ain’t too hard if you got a head for memorizing.”
She cast her gaze around the area, searching. Her eyes lit upon a leafy green plant with clusters of bright purple flowers. “Here’s a good example,” she said, leading Abby over to it. “This is thyme. The flowers are easy t’ recognize, but you can also identify it by the shape, color, and patterns on the leaves, and its smell.” She lightly brushed a paw against the plant, releasing a sweet odor in the air.
“Now this plant’s good f’r a number of things. The oil in the leaves is good for keeping wounds from goin’ sour. If ya got a container made f’r holdin’ water you c’n leave it sitting in the sun with some of these leaves in it to make an infusion. It’s pretty good for coughs.”
Merit looked over the plant thoughtfully. “I try to remember where they are, cause they’re better when picked fresh,” she told Abby. “Sometimes, if I can, I see if I cain’t pluck ‘em from the ground and move ‘em closer to home. I ain’t much of a green thumb though, I’ve had ‘em dye on me before so I don’t try that too often.”

Her tail twitched as she listened to the vixen, glancing towards the plant. If she had seen it before she hadn't given it two glances until now. It helped to have the plants name, thyme, for named beings always stood out easier in Abby's mind. As the scent was released she flicked her tail to the right, eyes drifting towards the base of the plant before nodding in response.
"Why not use your nail? Cut off a section and bring it back to the tribe you live at, rather then pick small pieces at a time. You can store the medicines, if you use it for that." Her eyes raise to view Merit, apologetic in nature. She wasn't trying to offend, tail twitching once more, a firm twitch to the side.
