“Yes. I think it depends on how fond the heart was to begin with. But then, I was pretty fond of my parents.” She replied in a wistful tone. She did miss her parents, but she was quite content where she was. “Oh! Water!” She said, perking up as she realized just how thirsty she had gotten. Talking to Unai had distracted her momentarily from her thirst.
She glided towards the water and drank deeply from the oasis. The water was delicious and cool and completely slaked her thirst. Backing from the pool, she raised a paw and brushed the remaining water droplets on her muzzle off. Not wanting to waste the water, she licked the drops off her paw in a distinctly cat-like movement.

The edge of his lips quirked up in a smile from his own bent position over the water, accompanied by a mental chuckle. It had been cute somehow, the way Ambra fastidously wiped the water away from her muzzle. He finished his own drink and shook his head, scattering the few drops clinging to his chin to land in the growth that could only be found in abundance where there was a constant source of water.
"These are fed by underground springs," he commented, looking out over the land in the direction they were to go then looking at Ambra. "Not much around here is fed by rain, just cause there's not much rain. There's only so many places where springs come up to the surface, so one of the first things I learned as a kit was were to find the oasis' we knew about."
Unai closed his eyes and rolled his shoulders, stretching the muscles there and then moving to giving his legs a brief stretch. He opened his eyes and cocked his head inquiringly. "Ready to continue forward?"

"Do you also know where each spring flows? I bet knowing about the springs that flow closer to the surface would allow you do be able to dig through to a drink if you aren't sure you'll make it to an oasis." Ambra mused. "Of course if they're too far down, that idea loses most of its merit."
The female watched Unai's stretching appreciatively before hopping up and stretching herself. "Yes, I feel much better now that I've had a drink. Let us continue." Ambra smiled at Unai and walked over to her guide.

They started forward again, heading towards the hilly land in the distance. Already tiny hills, no more than bumps really, were appearing here and there along their path.
Unai shook his head in response to Ambra's question. "None of them flow close enough to the surface to make digging them out viable," he said.
"It's kinda like underground rivers and lakes. If anything that massive got close to the surface, it'd either form an oasis or dry up." He looked out over the dry land. "The desert's sort of an either or place, you don't get a whole lot of inbetween options."

The cat-fox nodded, it made sense in a place like this. "Ah, well at least knowing where the oases will pop up is good knowledge. You'll have to teach me, Unai, so that I'm not completely helpless the next time I come to visit." Ambra said with a flick of her tail as she followed after the male fox.
"What other wonderful things are in your desert?" She asked, padding along. The sands under her paws shifted oddly as compared to the ground she was used to, but the balancing act was fun and becoming second nature.

Unai shrugged, looking back at Ambra. "It's not all that complicated, really. You just have to know where the oasis' are. Solarie knows where a good portion of them are. Unfortunately the easiest way to survive is to have flight, since you can move faster and spot oasis' with ease. Unless you're hiding a pair of wings under your fur, that option is closed to both of us."
Unai tried giving Ambra a light smile in an attempt to turn his pessimism into something of a stab at humor, though if that had originally been meant as a joke he would have buried his head in the sand with sheer embarassment.
Thankfully Ambra had provided another distraction.
"And I don't know about wonderful, but our sunsets are pretty nice," Unai said offhandedly. Most people described them as pure beauty, but happy words like that were a natural part of Unai's vocabulary. But desert sunsets were just different. Something about a combination of the colors, flat lands, silence, and dry air? He didn't really know.

"Well, if fit isn't complicated, then I'll learn fast." Ambra replied, snickering slightly at his comment about not having any wings. The option wasn't really closed, they could always befriend a Phim and fly that way. Ambra shot a sideways glance at Unai, well, she could befriend a Phim.
Ambra had the sad feeling of being one of Unai's only friends...and the accompaning anger at other foxes for brushing him off just because he was a little pessemistic.
"Really? I'd love to see that. Do the sunsets come later in the desert because the desert is flatter?" Ambra asked, looking at Unai curiously.

Unai looked startled and just a bit confused when Ambra posed her question to him. He answered automatically, his surprise not giving him time to assemble his thoughts into words.
"The sunset comes when it comes. How can it be later just because it's here?"
What, was there some weird phenomenon where the sun sank at a different rate outside the desert? Unai wouldn't know, he hadn't really been out in the world much?
Geez, the world must be scary if it affected the sun like that...

Ambra took in his confused look and his answer and shook her head with a small smile. "I told you I lived in the side of a cliff, right? The cliff is part of a mountain which, in turn, is part of a mountain range. I happen to live on the east side of the mountains, so sunset comes earlier for me than it does for my friend on the west side of the mountains. Also, the sunset lasts for over an hour, turning the sky all kinds of pinks and oranges while the land is dark and shadowed already."
"I was just wondering if the sun sets later in the day here due to the terrain, but if you've never experianced a mountain sunset, you probably can't compare the times for me." She said, curling her tail. "I guess I'll just have to experience it for myself."

Unai shrugged, trying to cover his embarassment. "Guess I never gave it much thought before," he said, looking out over the land and away from Ambra just in case he was blushing. "I mean I've lived here my whole life, so I wouldn't know what else to compare a desert sunset to."
Yup, that was definetly a blush on his face. Darn it, now Ambra was probably gonna think he was too unworldly for her tastes and just take off. He knew it was too good to last!

"Really? Well, since I'm going to finally experience a desert sunset, maybe you can come visit and experience a mountain one." Ambra offered, thinking Unai looked rather cute while he was blushing with embarrassment. " The ones with the clouds are the best, you get more colors that way. I bet you get some pretty wonderful sunsets here too."
The cat-fox turned and smiled warmly at Unai, her tail weaving behind her. "New experiences are usually fun, but they're even more fun to do when you have a friend with you."

Unai sighed, perhaps a bit too loudly, and tried to cover up his embarassment with one of his scowly frowns. Looking grumpy had always been his fall-back of choice.
"Don't really have friends to share anything with."
Vaguely his mind presented him with the idea that maybe that statement could be related to the grumpy fall-back thing, but for once he ignored the little voice in his head in favor of shuffling at the ground and his next admission.
"You're kinda the first person I've ever had to share anything with."

Ambra's ears flicked at the sound of that emotion filled sigh and she looked up at Unai in time to see his face rearrange itself into a grumpy frown. When he mentioned that he didn't have friends to share anything with, and then belied that statement with the one that Ambra was the first person he could do so with, she hesitated a little. Ambra didn't want to say she was friends...and then stick them both in that category.
"I'm glad you're sharing new experiences with me, Unai; I certainly like sharing them with you." She pointed out. "I think you should definitely come visit me in my mountains, if you want to. You can see something besides the desert, and I can spend some more time with you."

Unai thought about that. He'd have to at least let his parents know where he was going, so the tribe wouldn't freak out over him vanishing. He didn't think of it as asking permission, since he had every intention of doing as he pleased even if he was forbidden from leaving. It wasn't that he wanted to cause trouble, or rebellion for its own sake. If anyone demanded a reason or to know the thought process of his decision, he probably wouldn't have been able to give a proper answer as to why he'd be willing to commit open defiance if need be. He knew he had an answer but it was an unformed swirl of emotion, lots of little things that all somehow contributed yet were hard to properly put in words.
Not that it mattered much, anyway. Unai was hardly important to the tribe, as just a simple member; he doubted anyone would even think to raise a fuss about him leaving to visit a friend....
Now Unai frowned. Something felt wrong about the word, but he wasn't sure why. Surely it applied? He wasn't so totally socially helpless that he didn't know what qualified as a friend and what didn't. He was sure he and Ambra met the minimum qualifications at the very least! Didn't they? He picked at it, worrying the problem to pieces and recieving no satisfactory answer.
It was at this point that Unai realized he had been sitting silently for a stretch longer than was probably considered necessarily; heck, he'd probably seemed addled in the brain the way he just drifted off like that. He coughed self-consciously, pulling his mind back to the present. "Yes, well..... Shall we continue?"
The mountains loomed ahead, already looking closer than they had when they'd started off. Soon they'd begin to see some of the canyons and bluffs that preceeded the true mountain bases.

Unai slipped into silence, but Ambra didn't interrupt him. The far away look in his eye said that he was thinking about something pretty hard. Ambra hoped that he was thinking about coming to visit her, she really did enjoy spending time with the sometimes gloomy fox. That should seem weird to her, since she had a pretty upbeat personality. By all rights, the two of them should clash pretty hard.
Instead they seemed to get on famously...well as famously as they possibly could. Honestly, Unai was fun to hang around. He was smart, witty, and kinda cute when Ambra was able to tease reactions out of him. The cat fox sat and licked at her paw, she knew she liked Unai as more than a friend. But he'd already stated that being mates wasn't for him. That left her in a bit of a dilemma.
His cough brought her out of her thoughts and she turned to smile at him. "Alright. What are you showing me now?" She asked, her tail curling to a question mark shape.
