That smile was the fakiest thing Vixen had ever seen. Still, he trotted over and lined up beside her. Whatever was making him nervous didn't seem to be interfering too badly; or he had a lot of guts. Either way, they would race and once Briar saw how much fun it was, he wouldn't be so nervous. Dropping down into her racing stance, she counted down. "Three...two...one...Go!" She shouted, taking off towards the tree.

Vixen grinned, feeling her paws pounding the ground. The wind ruffling through her fur. Her bells tinkling merrily behind her. She let out a whoop and picked up the pace. She really did love to race.

((Sure :3 1-100))

Briar tensed as Vixen began the countdown. Predictably she did beat him in the start-off as he had thought she would, but he was surprised at how quickly his own bulk propelled him forward when strong claws dug into the earth.

His surprise wiped all thoughts from his mind, and the pure jingling of bells filled it. For once Briar thought of nothing, no plans, no consequences. He just raced for the thrill of running.

Vixen took off at the end of her countdown, lean body stretching as far as it could. She wasn't going to just throw the race, Briar would definitely notice that. Vixen came at this race like she came at all of them: all or nothing.

Briar had to dig his paws into the ground, rough earth lightly scraping the tough flesh of his wide paws, lest he run head-first into the tree with his mad dash. Breathing a little heavier than usual and a small smile on his face, Briar looked around for Vixen.

.....

He was alone at the tree. Shock caused his muscles to tense. He....got here first? Briar shook his head in denial, but his ears caught the sound of jingling bells still approaching swiftly at a run, confirming it. He felt the blood draining from his face.

He hadn't meant to win. There was no sense of triumph to his victory, only cold dread and a certainty that Vixen would be mad at him for beating her. He felt his limbs trembling and muscles giving him memories of pain, lessons that had been branded into him as a kit that reached across the void of time to haunt him still.

Vixen laughed as she watched Briar pull ahead of her and reach the tree. She skidded to a stop next to Briar, laughing breathlessly and wagging her tail. “Wow that was great! You’re a wonderful opponent, congratulations!” She turned with a smile and caught the expression on his face, smile disappearing quickly. “B-Briar? What’s wrong? Did you hurt yourself?” Sometimes even experienced foxes strained muscles and Briar had never raced before.

She put a paw on his shoulder and felt him shaking. He seemed to almost be lost in a completely different world. Or a bad memory. Acting more on instinct than any official plan, she leaned over and licked his cheek. Pulling back, she hoped that snapped him out of it.

Briar flinched at the touch of a paw, but did not pull away. Lost in the memories he wished to forget, it was a gentle pressure against his cheek that pulled his mind free.

But not his body.

Briar clenched his teeth so hard he thought his jaw might shatter from the force. Muscles spasmed and jerked as pain memories woke, bringing back the the ghostly pain of broken bones and torn skin. Limbs trembled and adrenaline rushed through his system while his body claimed danger when his eyes could see none.

Briar managed to unclench his jaw enough to get words out. "C-Can't....s-s-stop. H-Hurts," he gasped, then had to clench his jaw again to prevent him from biting his tongue in case his shivering got worse. He pressed his forehead to the ground and desperately breathed in the scent of sun-warmed earth and grass, trying to keep his eyes open to convince his body there was no danger.

((Sorry for his minor freak out. Promise they don't happen often.))

She didn't know what to do. This reaction was so far from what she'd ever seen before, she had nothing to go on. He said he was in pain, but nothing was hurting him, at least nothing that could be seen. One thing she'd never felt was helpless, but her antlers couldn't fight this...whatever this was. Thinking about what she did when Clarice had been a kit with a stomach ache, Vixen lay down next to Briar and leaned gentle pressure on him.

Vixen hoped her warmth and, hopefully, calming presence would help this reaction pass. Going further than that, she put her muzzle near Briar's ear and started to hum the first thing that popped into her mind, a lullaby. The pain was coming from his mind, which meant she had to calm his mind down and make it feel safe. She just hoped she was doing the right thing.

Briar's entire body flinched when Vixen leaned against him, trying to shy away from the contact. By sheer force of will he kept himself from moving, though he continued to shiver from the force of staying still when his body wanted to move.

'Safe,' Briar "shouted" inside his head, pressing closer to the earth and lifting his lips a little so he could taste the air as well as smell it. 'You're safe! It's safe! Calm down, you have to calm down!'

Warm breath brushed against his cheek, and a gentle, soothing hum penetrated into his mind. He mentally grabbed at the sound, holding to it with a feeling akin to desperation. Slowly the music filled his mind, blocking the fear and allowing his body to calm down.

Even when Briar felt the last of the panic drain from his body he held himself firm, keeping his face against the earth and lessening the hold on his muscles only marginally. He wanted to be one hundred percent sure of himself before he totally relaxed, in case an unexpected surge of panic hit again.

Vixen felt Briar start to relax a little and relaxed a bit herself. He kept humming the lullaby, nuzzling his forehead gently. Reaching the end of her song, she looked at the male curiously, "You're okay, Briar, you're safe with me." She said softly, beginning another soft melody. Her heart went out to the male, hating seeing him like this.

She wondered what had set him off. She wondered what had happened to him to make him react like that in the first place. She was going to ask him as soon as he calmed down. She wouldn't pry, though, if he didn't want to tell her.

Anger, a foreign emotion to her usually, coursed through her. Someone had done something to Briar, and Vixen had the curious urge to hunt them down and make them pay. But those thoughts probably weren't going to help Briar, so she focused on the song she was humming.

About halfway through the second melody Briar realized his muscles had relaxed, without any conscious thought on his part. He even had to mentally shake himself, otherwise he might have drifted right off to sleep. That decided him. No way he was going through a panic attack if his body was relaxed enough to just drop off into rest mode.

"Sorry about that," Briar whispered into the dirt, then lifted his head and looked at Vixen. "Sorry," he repeated in a mumble, straightening up and turning his gaze away in embarassment. "That probably freaked you out."

He looked at the tree then to the woods beyond it, then looked at Vixen with a slightly helpless look. "I-I should probably go, before I cause you any more trouble."

"Briar..." Vixen paused and tried to think of how to phrase what she wanted to say. "Briar, please don't apologise for that. I don't know what you had to go through that makes that...reaction happen, but it wasn't your fault. What happened to you and what happened right now, it wasn't and isn't your fault." She said, anger bubling forth again, though she kept it out of her tone with an effort.

"Yes, you did freak me out a little at first. I didn't know what was happening or how to help you but," Vixen paused again and took a deep breath to calm herself. "But I find myself more angry than freaked. I don't want to pry, Briar, and you don't have to tell me who it is, but I am very angry with whomever caused you to have reactions like that to simple things like racing."

Vixen took in Briar's helpless look and shook her head, her own expression one of worry. "You don't have to go, and you didn't cause me any trouble. If you'd like to talk about it, I'll listen. If you don't want to talk, I'm not about to run away." And if he did want to talk but couldn't bring himself to, then she'll stick with him until he could. And then she was going to sneak off and use her antlers in a very un-Christmas-y way.

((XD Vixen's spunk makes me want to hug her.))

Briar looked at the ground, a shakey laugh finding its way out of his throat. "It wasn't the race," he said, and though it took everything he had he managed to raise his head to look Vixen in the eyes. "It was that I won that...well," he trailed off, words sticking in his throat. He gave Vixen a helpless look.

"I come from a.....from an....my family aren't really people you want to meet," he mumbled at the end as he lost his nerve and turned his gaze back to the ground.

Vixen gaped at Briar, completely stunned by what he'd just said. An angry growl started rumbling in her chest, but she swallowed it back. "Are you telling me that your," Vixen paused and stopped another growl from emerging, "family members are responsible for this? Your parents?" The idea that a family would hurt one of their own was so foreign to Vixen as to be completely incomprehensible.

*Brair's family problems make me what to hug him :c*

Briar shook his head, though it wasn't a denial. From the way his limbs were locked and his body had begun to tremble, it was clear his fight-or-flight response hadn't completely abated.

"I was just a failure, a disgrace to them," he mumbled, shame weighing heavy as memories washed over him, unable to look at Vixen. "My brother was perfect in every way. He was their prince, and I was the one who should never have been born."

((I'm not sure he'd know what to do about being hugged, but the comfort is always good for him))

The deer fox was getting angrier by the minute, so angry that she was literally starting to vibrate with it. "That...that is just...." Standing up, she paced a few times to work off the angry energy before gently touching her nose to Briar's forehead and laying back next to him "That is just horribly, disgustingly cruel. And completely untrue! You...I don't think you're a failure at all. Even with your, I hesitate to use the word, upbringing, you're still very kind and loyal."

Vixen turned and rested her head on Briar's shoulders, as close to a hug as she could give him in their position. "And you're right, I wouldn't want to meet your parents. More importantly, they wouldn't want to meet me. And I'm glad you were born, if nothing else, I quite enjoyed racing against you." She said, trying for a little lightness.
