"Yeah. Doesn't exactly seem like heaven or hell so it's gotta be purgatory. Unless there's some other place where dead people go that we don't know about," yII said grimly.

Pretty soon he saw a few others join them, including bVII. Looks like both leaders of their mini parties were just killed. Hopefully the rest of their team was alright...

What was also concerning was that yI was here as well, which mean the other gamma squad had just lost their healer. He shook his head to himself and he plopped himself down onto one of the seats. Why did he have to answer the text? If he hadn't done it, he'd still be back with the rest of his group, relatively safe.. and alive. He began to worry if they would be alright without him. Even though they were with the betas now, there was that one blood thirsty X that he was concerned about. Without her leader as well... would she turn on his people? There were already only two gammas left at the lighthouse.

A sense of panic hit him, but it wasn't for himself. He might as well have condemned yVII and yIV. And it was only the second day of this whole damn thing! No, he had to get back somehow. It was way too soon for this. yII wanted to return and do what he vowed to do... which was to do everything in his power to make sure the other two gammas made it through for as long as possible. That was something he had broken by jumping to stupidity in an instant.

Dying like this... it was just so empty. Not only was it his own damn fault, he didn't even know who he was. No one really knew who he was. He was just some... faceless guy with a number.

That had to change.

"I will survive," He mumbled, "I will survive. I've got all my life to live, I've got all my lo--"

Wait. Where had he heard these words before?

Nine didn't have time to respond and talk to the others as they appeared out of nowhere. She wasn't sure where they had come from, but they looked slightly familiar, as though they had just gone through the same sort of thing she had and were now dead as well.

Dead. Huh, funny, she didn't imagine it to be much like this at all.

Nine slowly drifted into a daze, thinking about the events so far on this retched island. A slight tugging pulled at her mind, she couldn't place what it was, it was just a... feeling. But before long it was searing pain, cutting through her mind like a chainsaw through a butter sculpture. And damn did it hurt.

It kept going, and was almost completely through her mind when a new... feeling came over her. This one she could place much more easily, this one was not foreign to her at all. Revenge. She wasn't ready to be dead, and someone would have to pay for it.

She must go back. She must kill as many of them as she could. She must make a new team. One that would go on the offensive. One that would kill.

Breathe. Breathe, damn it!

E-12 struggled to fill her lungs with air, fighting the tightness in her chest. Was it possible to die a second time? Do dead people even need to breathe?

E-4’s question about E-13 rang in her ears. Where was E-13? Did he make it through? E-12 hadn’t even known she was dead, let alone the others. Was she dead? E-8 didn’t make it either, but he had shared E-12’s final step. And so shared E-12’s fate.

This isn’t right! I can’t be dead yet! E-12’s mind screamed at her. I’m not dead because E-3 isn’t here!

The tightness in E-12’s chest gripped her harder. She couldn’t breathe. Oh god, she couldn’t breathe. The pain was too much! Every injury she’d sustained, the stab wound from the blue team’s stake and the intense crushing from force of the horse’s mind, those were nothing compared to this pain. It felt like every molecule of E-12’s body was pulling apart!

It can’t end this way! E-12 didn’t know what heaven, hell, or whatever it was was supposed to be like, but she knew it wasn’t this. She fought the pain, drawing in breath after agonizing breath.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

The Pink Team, they would have no idea what had happened. One moment they were in their tent, sharing a moment of respite, and in the next five members of their team were just gone. And for what? E-12 regretted responding to the text. She’d been foolhardy and reckless. She’d let her team down. There was strength in numbers and, because of her impulsivity, Pink Team was going to fall.

Only thirteen could make it to the end and thanks to E-12 it wouldn’t be Epsilon.

Unless ...

E-12 hardened her resolve. Her death had happened too soon. It was foolish and meaningless and she hadn’t even seen it coming. It couldn’t end that way! She had to go back, somehow! She had to return to her team! She had to learn the meaning of this godforsaken island! She had to make the masterminds of this cruel game pay for what they were doing!

She had to live!

Oh how he wished E4 would just stop shaking him already. If this continued he was sure his head would roll off his shoulders, or he would be thrown in to some kind of coma of some sort. Was this the start of it though? This weird tugging pain in his head. Maybe dizziness or a headache was starting to form. No, not it didn't feel like that, it was more...painful. Damn it hurt!

Gritting his teeth, E8 pushed away from E4 and immediately his hands clung to his aching head. Yes, this was no headache. No headache would hurt so much it would make him wish he was dead, or dead again. Death after death if that made any sense.

That feeling soon dissipated though and was replaced with a feeling of revenge. Revenge that was just heightened by the adrenaline pumping through his viens. He needed to return. He needed to get all his anger out by slashing somebody or something.

Oh yes, he would return with a vengeance. He would carry on. He would make it to the end if it was the last thing he did.

'I have to go back and stand by them....'

For a moment, a wave of relief and hopefulness washed over E-4. E-13 was alive! He had gotten out of the game alive, and with two pendants and an extra medkit to boot. This initial relief wore off quickly, however, when she realized what this would mean for him. Assuming that all the other pendant-holders only had one, wouldn't it be logical for most people to target the person who had two? And now with a good portion of the pink group dead, would E-13 and the others be able to make it through to the end? If we only we could help, She thought, her heart suddenly heavy with regret, If only we hadn't died--what's wrong with Eight?

She looked startled when E-8 suddenly pushed away, her brows knitting in confusion as she regarded her teammate. Then she felt it: an unbearable, agonizing pain that started from her head, but seemed to split through her whole body within seconds. E-4 couldn't even cry out as she collapsed onto the floor, clutching her head tightly--so tightly that she was vaguely aware that it should probably hurt, but it was hardly noticeable amidst the rest of the pain--and pulling her legs to her chest. Everything felt like it was tearing, splitting, ripping. Her "body" felt like it was being pulled apart, and all E-4 could do was curl herself up tightly, as if she was attempting to keep herself together in one piece.

Somewhere amidst the pain and the haziness in her thoughts, an emotion deep inside of her suddenly jumped out. Revenge. Revenge? For what? Or more importantly, against who? Against whoever put that mine on the square you stepped on. Against whoever is behind all of this.

Against yourself for signing up for this damned game in the first place.

There was too much she still didn't know--too much that she regretted--to die now. She wanted to live, to help her comrades, to get them off the island. Maybe most importantly, E-4 wanted to know just who she was. Who was she, and why was she here?

She couldn't die here, and two words kept echoing through her head, surprisingly clear even through the intense pain.

Too soon. It was far, far too soon to give up now.

The sensation came as a shock to ε IX. She had concluded that this was it. She was dead, right? Isn't that the end of the line? The mixed emotions washed through her, confounding and unsettling all at once. She was afraid, not just of the invasion of emotion from somewhere, but of the unknown. What would happen now? What had happened before? She was in limbo in so many ways, she realized, no past and a future so thoroughly veiled that she couldn't imagine what it would be like tomorrow.

Add to that maelstrom of emotion and racing thought the new (physical?) pain and ε IX was flattened to her place on the couch. Her mind whirled with the agonizing pain of her body as a flood of memories from the last days crowded in. She remembered waking in the tent, discovering her teammates, the battle against the others before the horse-beast. The memories continued, unbidden and unstoppable, a parade of sensations from her short life.

The one that lingered the longest was more recent, of the medic who took the time to care for her wounds when she thought no one would care. It had been a turning point, a time when someone took notice of her and gave her aid without asking for anything in return. The relentless march of memory continued onward, playing through the minesweeper game and up to the point of her demise. She shivered involuntarily as she relived the last moments of surprise and pain.

I wasn't done! The thought was an anguished cry inside of her, bubbling up from somewhere deep inside. She hadn't thought she cared, and yet... She did. She wanted to go back. She MUST go back. Her teammates still needed her protection and help. She needed theirs as well if she was ever to discover her past, her purpose. There was a reason behind all this and she felt a burning, consuming need to find out what it was, despite the crushing pain and the torrent of memories and emotions that was sending her mind reeling.

Everyone was consumed in this hatred, a thick, black smoke, curling around each figure, an unsteady, unnatural air so thick and polluted, all human semblance of them entirely vanished, replaced with claws, teeth, fangs, thrashing unsteady limbs, eyes that saw nowhere and everywhere at once-

- And then the illusion was over. Each deceased soul simply gasped as they woke up, as if from a horrific nightmare. There was no black mist anywhere to be seen, that strange feeling of agony and hatred seemed like someone else's estranged emotions. Everything was normal again, with one very tiny exception.

Delta Eleven was gone.

ε IX lay back on the couch, feeling strangely spent. "What the hell was that?" she muttered, the tension she felt creeping into her voice as she spoke. She drew herself in, pulling her legs up onto the couch and wrapping her arms around them, her chin resting on her knees. She felt vulnerable and strange. Had that been her? Had the others felt the same thing or was she going crazy, alone? Although distant, the memory of the seething, vile monstrosity that had possessed (or was) her made her shudder.

Hoping to distract herself from her inner thoughts and disturbances, she glanced around the room to see what the others were up to.

There was one less.

She got up stiffly, jerkily, in a tangle of limbs all trying to move at once and pointed at where Delta Eleven had been. "Gone? Eleven is gone?" The disappearance of a member of their little gaggle unsettled her nearly as much as the fit or whatever it was that had just happened. She was surprised at herself that she cared, to be honest. She hadn't really even had a chance to get to know that one, and it wasn't like it was a team member. And yet... Had one of them been claimed again? If they were already dead, what could have happened to that poor soul?

The outpouring of emotion felt strange. Although many of the emotions she had been feeling of late were not necessarily good, she was feeling something. She was still human enough then, right? These thoughts were in the back of her mind as she stared at the empty place in confusion and horror. Her current state paled in comparison to the oddly disconnected memory of the monsters, but it was distressing nonetheless.

With an uncharacteristic whimper, ε IX curled back onto the couch with a cushion in her arms, the substance of the thing giving comfort on some primal level.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, E-4 was wondering just what was happening. First there was pain, then a strong desire for revenge...

And now she was just angry.

Maybe angry was an understatement--she was furious. One moment, E-4 felt relatively collected (albeit in agonizing pain) and the next, she was suddenly overwhelmed by pure hatred. From what she could tell, it didn't seem directed at any one thing or person, but at everything and nothing at all. However, even as she was being overtaken by the dark emotions, a small, conscious part of her still survived, though it was weakly flickering in and out. As she tried to raise her head, she was vaguely aware of the black mist that spread out and curled around her. What...is...? The hand that was right in front of her face abruptly transformed before her eyes, her fingers changing--to her horror--into sharpened claws. Though she couldn't see them, she felt as if something was happening to her legs as well. In the same second, her vision suddenly warped, and then--

--E-4 gasped loudly and her body jerked violently, her eyes snapping open in shock. Sitting up quickly, she glanced down at herself, holding up her quivering hands. They were normal. No claws. And...and her legs? Sweat trickled down the side of her face as she reached out to run her fingers over her legs, letting out a shaky sigh of relief. They seemed fine too. What the hell was that? A dream? It had seemed too real and, judging by the others in the room, she hadn't been the only one to witness it.

The smoke was gone though, and the feelings of hatred had grown distant and detached. She tried to push herself to her feet, but her legs buckled and she was sent falling back onto the floor. Fine, she could stay here for a bit.

"I-i-is everyone o-okay?" She asked, though her voice came out as a quiet, shaky mess, "W-what just...what j-just happened?"

Her head snapped towards ε IX when she spoke, and E-4 scanned the lounge quickly, confirming that Delta Eleven was indeed missing. Her stomach tightened and she balled her hands into fists at her sides. Had Delta Eleven become one of those...those creatures too? Or...?
PostPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2011 2:37 am

Her eyes were squeezed shut as she hugged her legs to her chest, maintaining the fetal position she found herself adopting; what is this pain? This emotion tugging at her...? Can a dead person even feel this much pain? Then again, it was all mental, right? Her eyes fluttered open and the first thing she saw was something black, flickering - and when she uncurled herself, she realized, to her horror, that the black thing was her. Quickly, she looked up with wide eyes; she hadn't been frightened during her time on the island...

... At least, not until now. Seemed like death had a way of messing with her head.

Breathing heavily under her mask as she gritted her teeth, she soon found that her thoughts of regret had morphed into thoughts filled with hatred. She shouldn't have been the one to die! It was all this stupid island's fault - it was her lousy group's fault. It was everyone else's fault but her own.

She found herself surrounded by what looked to her like black smoke, the type to be generated by a raging inferno. However, unlike smoke, the smoke had form - claws here, fangs there... Where are all the people? Were they all turning into monsters? Could this be the 'shadows' the text talked about? Not daring to breathe, Beta Seven found herself drowning in this black smoke, and she clawed at her gas mask, resisting the urge to scream again, although this time, her scream would be one of rage, not of fear.

And then it was all over.

A gasp escaped her as she flung herself forward so violently, it felt like she had been falling. Was it all a nightmare? It felt like she had just woken up from one... She glanced around the room with a frown, her heart - if it was still beating - was racing. Looking up as one of them spoke (E-9), she did a mental headcount, and realized that yes, one of them was indeed missing.

"... I wonder," Her voice lacked its usual edge, and instead, sounded shaky as she answered E-4, "Sounds like another unanswered question to me... So, that was no nightmare..."

His vision, it was turning unfocused as E8 felt like he was going to die for really this time, that is if this so called death wasn't death at all, but some kind of cruel mind game. But what did he know, this place, this game of survival made no sense at all. Anything could happen, so there was no point in guessing anymore. All he could do was accept things for what they were until it is proven wrong.

This pain however, it didn't matter anymore because it felt real. His emotions, they felt like they were being toyed with as they continued to heighten. All the negativity within him started to envelope him until all he could feel was anger and the grand need for revenge, until his vision turned red and his thoughts were no longer coherent.

Kill. Revenge. That was all that mattered. Kill them like the beast he was. Like the beast he was becoming. Just kill them all. Kill anyone and everyone who got in his way. No longer did he have partners or friends. No, they were ALL his enemies. They were all out to get him and keep him from his goal.

Just kill them all with the power that was coursing through him, with the power he was embracing.

Wait, no, what was happening?

Looking down with confusion E8 watched as he literally started to transform in to some kind of monster. His fingers started to bend and sharpen in to claws. His lips, he could taste blood as fangs started to appear and cut in to his lips.

No, no. This couldn't be happening!

Screaming, E8 through his hands up and clung to his head once more as he stumbling back and slid down against a wall.

It couldn't be real. It can't be real. It wasn't, at least not for him.

And just as fast as it hit him, it vanished....

Gasping, he snapped his eyes open while a rush of emotion hit him once again. No longer was it anger, but confusion, sadness and fear. No matter though, from what he could tell he was normal once more, and that seemed to calm him a bit.

E8 didn't say anything. Instead he sat silent against the wall as he tried to think over what just happened.

'Why....why did I...No.'

E-12’s vision was red and black smoke tendrils curled around her body. She wasn’t supposed to be dead yet! She would make someone pay for her death! With an unnatural growl, E-12 reached out with an arm tipped in wicked claws, searching for her prey. She snarled and revealed dripping, gruesome fangs. Her eyes rolled wildly in her head and then-

-it was all gone. E-12 gasped. Was that real? The pain, the anger, the ... transformation, it had all seemed so real just a moment ago, but with each passing moment things seemed less like reality.

With wide eyes E-12 scanned the rest of the room. Everyone else seemed to be recovering from the same whatever it was that she was. Her brow furrowed when E-9 spoke up. Delta Eleven? She couldn’t put a face to a name.

“I don’t know, E-4” she whispered. E-12 had no idea if she was okay. She had no idea if she would ever be okay again. They were all dead, right? Where were the others? Where were E-3, B-5 and, E-12 shuddered, B-1? Maybe this was some sort of waiting room. Maybe the real heaven or hell (Probably hell, E-12 thought, bitterly remembering the feeling of her knife as it sank into B-1’s breast) was yet to come.

She cleared her throat. “So, what happens now?”

Gamma One gasped for air, her hands at her throat, her head and body tipped forward as she tried to breath as best she could through the awful mask. She sucked in air and shakily held her hands up to her face, half expecting them to be tipped with sharpened claws, like a beast. She folded to the floor, unable to stand for the moment, wondering if she was going crazy.

'Do the dead go insane?' she asked, speaking to everyone and no one. She had felt..crazed, bestial even. Wanting to rip and tear until there was nothing left to destroy. Was this hell then? The decor might not show it but this had been a most disturbing place since she'd arrived.

She tried to calm down but it was hard to and she hugged herself, rubbing her arms as if trying to keep warm, looking around the room at the others. She did not register that there was one missing as they had not been on her team. She'd only kept track of the Gammas that had also died.

The regret twisted into anger and unseething hatred. And then... it was all gone.

Snapping awake, yII quickly looked around, breathing heavily like he had just come out of some horrid nightmare. Those emotions... what were they all about? What was that dark mist too? His body was normal... or at least as normal as he knew it to be and he wasn't some twisted beast.

Placing a hand on his head as he tried to recollect himself, he soon took a few breaths and looked towards the others. One of them was missing.

"Who knows what happens to dead people? It's not like people really get to talk to them normally," he said in reply to yI.

There was one thing, though about this place.

"Though, I gotta say. For purgatory, this place is pretty empty," he commented. The only people he saw here were from the island. There were no other dead souls. That struck him as a little odd.

"Maybe we're the only ones dead so far," Beta Seven rolled her eyes at Gamma 2; now that she had time to recollect herself, her tone had regained its usual, cocky edge. However, even as she sat crossed legged on the comfy couch, she couldn't help but feel unease; for once, she was glad the gas mask obscured her face as she was sure she looked uncertain. Weak, even. Whatever that sensation was, it did bring out emotions she had long buried due to the circumstances, and the fact that she wanted to survive, regardless of the 'cost'.

Now that she was dead, those emotions are starting to surface. Ugh, she did not want to lose her balls! Dead or alive!

"Who knows? I might be insane somewhere are all of you are just a figment of my imagination!" She laughed at Gamma 1's question as she grabbed a pillow and placed it on her lap, "Or maybe you're the insane one and I'm a figment of your imagination. Its hard to tell now, wouldn't you agree?"
