Riley let a faint chuckle escape. You'd be surprised at how quickly you are adapting. You've been communicating with me quite often without using actual words. That isn't normal, you know. You need a highly evolved brain to emit even the easiest of mental images - and a lot of exposure to someone who does it. She sent out a deep, penetrating wave of adoration that buried itself down into the very depths of it's mind, languishing there freely. Her own eyes closed as she did it. I hadn't realized that my fondness for touching your mind was going to have this effect, but trust me. She opened her eyes, and they crescented softly. I like it.
And the hot, doggish breath of a puppy blew in her face, causing one eye to close in response. She turned, looking at the happy little ball of fluff that had wormed it's way between the two, and sighed happily. They were like a little family, curled up together like this.
Even for Riley, who was not fond of family, the idea struck her as sweet.

Malodore opened its beak slightly in a small smile. It did not speak, but instead radiated a blend of gratitude, contentment, and gradual relaxation. Slowly the mental and physical tension that had fallen onto it once more began to ebb. "I could stay here for the rest of the night, at least, without moving," it murmured. "But you... you need more, don't you? There's brains in the jars..." The brain-growth array was still on the shelf it had been on before, though it had been moved into a self-contained stasis state during the field trip.

As usual, Malodore somehow knew exactly what Riley needed. It always knew. Riley let out a single chuckle, and pressed the side of her face against the pillow, just beside Malodore. Her eyes closed slowly, then blinked open. It was a slow blink, and it only ended in the fluttering of eyelids once again. She was fading. The day had taken it's toll, the pillow was so soft, the blanket was so warm, and the company was so comforting..
No. Riley murmured, in a hazy, fuzzy thought that sounded like it was underwater. I only need you.
Maybe Malodore was wrong, after all.

"If you need a snack later then," Malodore said, relaxing into the mattress. It did not need to sleep... strictly... but it had never been on an island, gone insane multiple times, and been killed, in limbo, then brought back before.
Some deviation from the norm was to be expected.
The plague doctor managed a ti amo - mentally, at least - before letting out a long sigh and allowing its own eyes to close.
Thankfully, there was nothing there but empty, ordinary darkness.
