I'd much prefer a guy just telling me something like this outright and being clear than to say something that I might misinterpret and cause me to keep pursuing him. Better to suffer a small heartache here than to keep chasing him when he isn't interested and taken and to turn you down after you've fallen deeper in love and have it destroy you.
Too many people have had their heart broken by people not being clear when it comes to dates and crushes.
