After a minute, Ashley returned with everyone's drinks, carefully balanced onto a tray. The girl probably could have made an okay barmaid or waitress... if she wasn't so short. In fact, it looked like Ashley was, once again, the shortest person present.
Drat.
Oh god, karaoke. Ashley wasn't touching that with a 10 foot pole. Zombieland, through...

Fallon smiled at Lily, a soft genuine one. Were things already fixing themselves between them? The girl hoped so. She didn't have the patience to devote time to repairing any of her civilian relationships, but she really didn't want to lose one of her only friends either. "We are," Fallon responded, though without the comic accent. She got the idea that Lily didn't understand what she was actually saying, and this -- like so many things about the redhead -- was perfectly adorable to Fallon.
Fallon watched Ashley disappear toward the bar. "Thanks," she called after her. It was a generous thing to do, and Fallon liked generous people, polite ones too. Ashley was being both.
An unfamiliar boy introduced himself to her. Fallon smiled, the same generic politeness she gave everyone at first meeting, and said, "Yes, I'm Fallon. It's nice to meet you, Senri." The follow-up comment made Fallon laugh, but she liked him for saying it. Something about the boy was charming, even if he wasn't her cup of tea.
Magenta eyes roved to Jada. "I vote for karaoke," she said. "I expect a rave performance from you, Jada, that reflects your high breeding and educated taste. Perhaps something from Britney Spears' early work? Or a nice rendition of 'Baby Got Back' perhaps? Let's make your mother proud." The words coming out of her mouth seemed alien. Fallon was the type to listen to classical music while cooking a souffle. It was probably surprising that she had heard of Sir Mix-A-Lot at all.
More importantly, had Fallon just... cracked a joke?
Fallon was a terrible, godawful singer, but she loved karaoke in a way that she had never understood. As a child, she liked counting the beats of music to calm herself down. Perhaps it stemmed from that? It didn't explain the passion in her soul for belting out long off-key notes in front of a group of strangers. In fact, it seemed like the exact opposite sort of thing Fallon would like -- and yet, she was thrilled that they might start it soon.
With a bounce in her step that had been missing for nearly a year, Fallon grabbed her drink from the tray (whispering a fast, "I'll get the next one!" to Ashley) before heading off in the direction of the karaoke machine.

"Yes!" Kirin had cheered, one fist pumping into the air as Jada explained there was a small karaoke machine. Score one for awesome party 'games'. Even better, quite a number of other people seemed interested. That ought to triple the fun, even if by some horrible chance they couldn't sing. At least he had Lily, who had proved her talent to him previously.
"I wanna duet with someone, at some point," he advised the others. Just so they weren't surprised if Kirin tried to drag them up with him as he bounced around, as he so often did when karaoke was involved. The personality change caused by karaoke might be a shock to those who knew him better as an ice queen - though not to Lily, and perhaps Fallon (who might have experienced the karaoke-hyper Kirin at Barren Pines).
His eyebrows flew up as Fallon - serious, fun-killing, OCD Fallon - agreed to join the karaoke. Right after cracking a joke! Kirin eyed Fallon in shock. It seemed Fallon was quite capable of cutting loose, even if she'd never done so when they'd attended the same school. He shot her a grin, before grabbing his drink from Ashley and trailing after Jada on the epic quest for the karaoke machine (his idea of a Holy Grail).
"Zombieland?" he repeated the name of one of the movies. It sounded familiar... Oh yes, that had come out while he was at Barren Pines. There'd been a group outing one weekend. And then, of course, several of the zombie-killing teams had taken their names from the movie. "Aw, nostalgia. I'll have to catch that one when it starts."
