Ygrashmak peered down at the slave, then chuckled deeply. The mental laugh rang through the room in chord with the slightly hissing sound from his body. It was odd, but it sounded pleased. I plan not to hurt Fable, Nej. It would be most anti-productive. But I would love to see these thugs for myself and request an apology for their horrid actions.

He looked to the woman, his expression unreadable. And how would you propose I help you? Be a mascot? Stand guard? Act like I approve of slavery? His questions seemed earnest, free of sarcasm or bitterness. Instead, his earnest voice almost made his tone seem like he found this situation humorous. Almost.

Think about that, Fable, while your thugs come to me. If they will not come to me, I will leave this room. He snorted, sending another wave of warm air down to the two mortals, finalizing what he said.

"First we must....you must hide," she insisted, and looked to Nej for help. She could think of a few places, but how to get him there. "What sort of magic can you do? Can you... can you..." She took a breath, staring at Nej again. "Can you take a person away from here?"

Fabel wiped her hands forcefully on her skirt, trying to steady every shaking part of her body. She wouldn't be able to stand this much longer. Actually, you couldn't say she was handling it so well right now.

Ygrashmak's assurance that he wasn't going to hurt the Mistress didn't make Nej feel any better, so he stayed put. The last time he had stepped away, it hadn't resulted in anything good, anyways.

And when the question of hiding the dragon came up, Nej could offer very little, only a little common sense. "I-I don't think we will be able get him through the door without structural damage, Mistress Fabel." He spoke softly, not quite sure if he was speaking out of turn or not.

No, no, Nej. Nonriavi comment dryly with only a hint of humor. A dragon is not going to fit through the door.

Nej, really, had stopped paying attention to the Bronze at this point. It was Mistress Fabel's shaking that concerned him. "I-I'm sure-" he paused to formulate the best way to phrase what he was saying, "-I-I'm sure we'll figure a way."

When Mistress Fabel looked at him, he looked back, only briefly, before diverting his eyes down. He was significantly uncomfortable looking the Mistress in the eye.

Aye, I do not think my magnificent body will fit through your small doorways. I might suggest, if you are going to force me to hide, to let me remain in here. I do not think I can get out without attracting more of the slavers’ attentions. Oh yes, Ygrashmak was definitely having fun now. His mental voice had the hint of a chuckle, and he seemingly smiled, revealing rows of teeth. The front teeth were sharp and pointed, like what would be expected. However, they got duller and duller the further back they went. This silver came from a line of omnivores.

Transport people magically? I can not force either of you to teleport, if that is what you mean. I can only do that with . . . umm, a select few. My range of magic is not in death or transportation. Ygrashmak nodded his large head, threatening to bash the ceiling with his frill and skull. Thank goodness Ygrashmak wasn’t a fully grown dragon.

Lady Fabel would not even look at the silver beast as she asked her next question, but kept her eyes on Nej. "If you could get out of here undetected, before it is light outside, might you be able to carry someone away? Forgive me, but...like a horse?"

If there was some way for him to get out, then he and his human, and whatever slave he might carry off, could be away from the compound and it's complicated life. Lady Fabel had no idea what she was suggesting they get into. She had no idea what existed outside of her world. But the grass is always greener on the other side, and a slave could not work as much good here by staying, not in her estimation.

Nej looked over at Mistress Fabel again, and dropped his eyes down again, before looking back up. Vaguely, what Mistress Fabel seemed to be implying dawned on him, and he briefly he glanced at Ygrashmak, back at Mistress Fabel, back down at the ground, and back at Fabel again. His heart rate quickened significantly, and his arms fell slack at his sides.

Certainly she wasn't - she couldn't be- was it even possible?

Is it possible?

A dragon of his size, two, maybe three. Nonriavi sounded airy, like there would have been more breath in his speech than actual voice. It is possible. There was a slight waver in Nonriavi's speech, a hitch of... anticipation?

Nevertheless, Nej bit the hope down. There was no good in building hope down only to have it fall.

Ygrashmak frowned at the woman in front of him. Like a horse? What did that mean? What was a horse? The draconic figure dug through his memories, trying to solve this problem, but he couldn’t recall what a horse was. Maybe it was some sort of rank the women only talked about. Yes . . . that might make sense.

I am afraid I am no horse. I am sure that I could perform better than any of your horses, though. I have faith in my abilities. But how would I carry anyone? I might be able to fly away two, maybe three, depending on how they are on me.

Ygrashmak had an inclination of what the woman was asking, but he wasn’t sure. He tried to not trust her, but his trusting nature was beginning to betray him. Oh dear . . . what was a poor silver dragon to do?

"Take Nej, then," she said with a nod. "Y-you... now that he's seen you, and me, like this, he can't be as safe here. He is... He is a favorite around here." Absentmindedly, Fabel stroked Nej's hair, but now she was looking at the dragon. "A change in his behavior, it would be noticed. They would notice."

Fabel was greatful for the thick walls of these rooms, as many a woman before her had been.

Nej felt dizzy.

Although, whether this was because of what Mistress Fabel was saying, or because of the strain and effort it took to listen her words while Nonriavi voiced without restraint his surprise, it wasn't clear. Maybe it was both. Probably was both.

There was a swelling in his chest, hope, maybe, or something else completely without name. It was the sort that made him short of breath, and made him feel numb down to his fingertips (perhaps this is why he leaned in slightly when Fabel stroked his hair).

Yet what she was implying (no, not implying anymore, she was out right saying now) seemed to be break half of all of the rules ever set in stone in his life, the rules he lived by. And - but - still it didn't feel right to question Mistress Fabel.

Nej tried to speak, but failed to form words for once, twice, before he managed. "I-Is this-" Only to pause again, as he rephrased, "-you wish me to leave with him, M-Mistress Fabel?"

Ygrashmak watched the woman carefully. He seemed to wait for something, but whatever it was wasn’t clear. His silvery eyes seemed to reflect the two people for a long moment before he snorted.

I can do that. In fact, I can take you as well. I believe myself to be strong enough to carry your light frames, but I fear that the carrying will not be the hard part. I can not just walk out unnoticed. If you have a plan, please do enlighten me.

Ygrashmak glanced out toward a small window, seeing the world bathed in night. He could see clearly in the dark, as all dragons, but he didn’t know if other humans had the magic to do so as well. He might be able to get out of the compound, and the darkness would conceal him. But the actual process of leaving seemed to be the most hazardous. If he was spotted, even his demeanor may not protect him. He was just one dragon, and a healer at that. He wasn’t a warrior, and he didn’t know how to use his body to cause other’s harm. That would have been most undesirable.

"Are those wings any good?" she asked. "I have no way to hide you. Now is the best time... the best time. It's dark out. Avoid the light, fly fast..."

She had nothing more for him for that. Then something else the lizard had said hit her. "Me? B-but I...I belong here!" Her hand stopped in Nej's hair, her eyes and lips widened unconsciously. Even thinking about riding-- no, touching!-- the beast finished her off. She didn't seem to be listening any more.

So many thoughts, questions, concepts ran through Nej's mind, none really sticking to develop into fully fledged realizations.

There was no way - how would the dragon get out of this room? Without, that is, severe structural damage? And, however they got out, was it really possible that they could really be... gone, just like that?

We'd get caught. We'd get caught. We'd get caught. We'd-

Nej. Calm down. Think - think, breathe.

Nej winced slightly at the bitter snap to Nonriavi's mind-voice, but complied, taking a one-two-three shallow breaths. He could hardly keep looking at any one person, diverting his eyes between the large silver dragon, Lady Fabel, and the ground.

And then Mistress Fabel's distress (or at least what he perseved as distress) caused him to jerk to attention, catching only Fabel's response to Ygrashmak's suggestion. And another thought touched his mind, as brief and fleating as a moment.

Would she be coming with them?

Of course my wings are good. They fly, and they are quite strong. Ygrashmak rose his head in pride for his lovely, silvery wings. He thought they were quite beautiful, but that wasn’t here nor there.

I think, if I fold my wings tightly to my body and scrunch up, I might fit through the doors. But this room has no direct way out, does it?

Ygrashmak looked around again, seeing if there was some door he didn’t see before. He highly doubted it, but it was well worth a try. When he didn’t find a door (other than the one already seen), he sighed deeply, sending a small wave of hot air onto the humans below. This is going to be extremely difficult.

Ygrashmak peered at the young slave, and grew curious. Did this boy know that he was about to experience freedom and flight all in one fell swoop? Again, doubt crept into his mind, but he still enjoyed the guesses. Maybe the human would scream in terror? Or maybe laugh gaily? Possibly faint. Yes, Ygrashmak thought, that seemed like a very likely reaction.

Fabel was taking her own sweet time thinking about it. It seemed to her that somewhere in the recesses of her mind was the answer, it was just that her thoughts felt weighed down, slow. Then there was a knock on the door.

"Oh..." she whispered. "Oh no..."

"Mistress Fabel?" came the muffled inquiry after the slave on the other side had discovered that the door was locked.

She cleared her throat. "I-I'm alright. I've just had a fit is all."

There was a pause. "Mistress, may I get you any thing?"

"U-um...Yes! Yes, you can get me Geff and Leone!"

As the servant padded away, she added more quietly, "There is a porch. I can clear the halls. How badly do you want your apology, Dragon?"

Under Ygrashmak's gaze, Nej wilted. He slouched a bit more, diverted his eyes, and wrungs his hands nervously. It really was disconcerting to be pinned like that. Like... like a garden snake between the ground and a shovel, or something. Either way, he didn't like the feeling.

The knock at the door caused Nej's lungs to practically leap into his throat. He couldn't really hear the slave on the otherside, no matter how much he tried to concentrate. So, even though the other slave had left to retrieve Geff and Leone, Nej kept a careful eye on the door. Nervously, he rubbed his ear with the heel of his left hand.
