Hadn't figured it out? He didn't know, or just... couldn't remember? Oh. He couldn't remember. Oh crap. Had he been talking to 'Lindsey' and then she said something that pulled Luke out to prevent Lucas from hearing it?
Suddenly everything he'd said made some vague sort of sense. If she hadn't been afraid of Lucas, and if he had been as chivalrous then as he was now, maybe it wasn't Lucas at all, it was Luke. That was the only thing that she could think of, especially since she herself had sort of freaked out when she met Luke. It hadn't scared her, but she had been disconcerted and thereafter questioned her own sanity. Could something like that have happened? Maybe, but there was no way of knowing.. No, she could ask Luke later to find out. Yes, that would be good to figure out.
"Sometimes authors have a particular idea about a character, but the readers all have an entirely different idea about it," she mused, rubbing Fetch's belly again. "But, from this story I don't think Luke could ever hurt her on purpose, especially since.." She couldn't say it. She couldn't bring herself to say those specific words. "She'd been hurt before."

Fetch kicked a back paw absently, rolling to a side slightly to gain a better angle. He would have been much more concerned about the whole situation if belly scratches didn't feel so very amazing.
"I'd like to think that. He loved her a lot. More than anything. But even if that's really not what happened, everything else Luke did was horrible. He knew that when he was doing it, and he knew it after. Lindsey still had every right to hate him." His eyes settled on the desert, sands glistening under the stars and the moon. "Well, I guess it's kind of a stupid story anyway."

Luckily for Fetch, Claire continued to scratch and rub his belly with both hands, grateful for a fluffy distraction. It was like a mental blockade from her memories.
"No, it wasn't a stupid story at all," she said firmly with a shake of her head, smiling slightly down at the Growlithe as his paw twitched. "And what sort of horrible things did he do? It doesn't sound like he could hurt anyone. Well, apart from guys who deserve it," she added after a pause, remembering the few times she'd hurt a guy who really deserved it. And a girl, but that was necessary.

"He was awful to his friends. Despite everything they said about that woman, he kept going back to see her. He didn't tell them anything or listen to anything they said. If they tried to talk any sense into him, he just yelled at them to shut up." He laughed. "Ah, he sure had it coming. Even I can't sympathize with him anymore when I spell it out like this." A breeze nicked the loose upper layer of sand from the ground and blew it in wisps past the window.

Her gaze traveled to the window as well, and a small smile twitched at her lips as he spoke. "Ah, everyone has one of those. Everyone who dates always manages to fall for someone they shouldn't, someone who isn't good for them at all. Of course they can't see anything but how wonderful this person is, so when their friends who can try to convince them of this they only see how good and wonderful their significant other is. Only when their significant other slips up and makes a mistake, they realize they were wrong the whole time and their friends were just trying to help," she said with a small sigh, her smile gone. Her situation had been slightly different, but it had similarities. "Their friends just have to hope that once their realizes this, they break up with whoever it was." That would have been a good idea on her part, but it was.. a bit more complicated than that.

"It's kind of difficult to think about, so I hope you don't mind if I cut story time a little short." He leaned his forehead against his palm. The happy little window separating the storybook fantasy from his own reality was beginning to break down, and he didn't particularly want to push it anymore. At this stage in the tale, the emotion on the other side of the glass was terrible indignation, and Lucas had no intent of going into another blind rampage. His knuckles were still sore from the earlier fit.

She shook her head and reached out a hand to touch his shoulder. "No, I don't mind at all." There was a small, hesitant pause. "Thank you for the story though." A small smile was on her face, and she kept rubbing Fetch's belly with her other hand.
It wasn't too long before she withdrew her hand from his shoulder, not wanting to elicit another response like she had when she hugged him, and scratched the dog's stomach with both hands instead. She seemed to be thinking about something, but frowned slightly after a moment and shrugged. "I don't know if I can tell you a story." Oh, she could tell him plenty of stories, but what she really meant was she couldn't think of anything to tell him that wasn't too upsetting. Well, there were a couple, but.. Hmm..

Fetch, between the warm lap and the belly rub, had fallen asleep, his amber eyes shut and his expression clearly content. He was oblivious to everything but warmth and pettings, and it was bliss.
"Well..." he continued to stare out the window, "it's not like you have to." He hadn't told his story expecting one in reply, after all.

Claire simply shrugged, her gaze focused on the desert outside. "I know, but I'd like to. Besides, it's only fair." He had told her a very revealing and partially painful story, after all, and all he got out of her were short bits and pieces based off of comments and reactions and expressions.
After a thoughtful pause, she inhaled deeply and closed her eyes, absently rubbing the sleeping Growlithe's stomach. "Once upon a time there was a little girl named Lucretia. She grew up in the shadow of her older sister who was always doted on by their parents, but Lucretia really didn't mind. She took piano lessons for several years, and would go visit her uncle on sometimes. They would go fishing on occasion, but he taught her to play poker so they would normally play cards when she visited, which her mother didn't know about for quite some years afterward. She hated poker," Claire added after a short pause in a more confidential tone, a smile finding its way to her lips.
"When Lucretia was 15 she tried to become a rebellious little teenager, so she quit her piano lessons and joined an acting school, but she wasn't exactly as rebellious as she'd hoped. Even though she was young, she dated a boy named Jake for half a year. He was very sweet and kind, but unfortunately also incredibly dull, and too boring for Lucretia to handle. It hadn't been that serious anyway, and she did feel quite bad about it, but it's better to end those sort of things instead of continuing them and feeling miserable, just for the sake of the other's feelings." It had made her feel awful, especially with how hard he took it (as if they would be together forever or something), but it couldn't be helped. A finger tapped on her knee as she paused, thinking over how to phrase the second act.

Lucretia? It sounded familiar somehow, and it was so unique a name that Lucas doubted he could be thinking of someone else. Lucretia... Where did he know a Lucretia? He eyed the sleeping Growlithe, pondering the reason he would know a name like that and listening for the next part of Claire's story.

Claire attempted to suppress a yawn but was unable to, so she lifted her hand to at least cover her mouth as she did so, then continued. "Lucretia was 16 then, and after several months she began dating a boy named Justin. He was more ambitious than Jake and was very charismatic, and Lucretia fell for him pretty quickly."
Her head leaned back against the wall as a hand reached up to tuck a lock of dark hair behind her ear. "They dated for about nine months, and broke up when Lucretia was expelled from the school after she turned 17." A smile twitched at the corner of her lips at the memory, and she paused to glance over at Lucas to see if he had any comments so far. This was her favorite part of the story, after all.

"Expelled?" That was surprising. But the smile tugging at her lips was unmistakable... "Why was she expelled?"

"I was hoping you'd ask that," she said as the smile widened into a smirk, and she couldn't help but chuckle a bit. "She got expelled because one day she found Justin in an empty room making out with some blond girl who knew that Justin was taken. Lucretia was obviously not going to take such an indignity lying down, so she made her intentions clear to break his face. However," she said with a shrug, like something that can't be helped, "the blond girl jumped up to defend him and made it perfectly clear that if Lucretia wanted to get to Justin, she had to go through his young little mistress first. And, since she insisted..." Another shrug. "She left with a bloody nose. Rather quickly, too, though Justin couldn't leave for quite some time." She idly scratched the side of her nose, a completely innocent look on her face with a hint of pride and self-satisfaction mixed in. "He was immobilized on the floor for at least twenty minutes after having Lucretia's knee rammed quite forcefully into somewhere rather sensitive." She would have done more, too, but... "Obviously the girl attracted a bit of attention and Lucretia was immediately found and expelled. Schools usually don't tolerate that sort of behavior, regardless of the reasons for it." Still, she had no regrets whatsoever.

He winced slightly at mention of the broken nose. Even if she had deserved it, he just couldn't accept the idea of striking a woman. Or maybe he felt that way because it was a situation impersonal to him? There was a certain woman at whom he wouldn't bat an eyelash if she were to have her face broken before his very eyes.
He chuckled, "Well, sounds like Lucretia was pretty uh..." Ballsy was the word he wanted to use, but to do so in response to that story seemed a bit cruel to Justin. "Confident. Good on her."

It seemed she'd temporarily forgotten Lucas' chivalrous tendencies towards women, but even if she had she would still have mentioned the girl's nose. The little sow deserved it. Justin deserved more than that.
But instead she shrugged, her smirk fading slightly to a smile. "She was quite proud of herself for that. She would have felt bad about hitting the girl, but being a girl sort of nullifies those feelings. Plus she pretty much asked for it, because Lucretia would've left her alone otherwise."
"Anyway," she said after a pause which was filled with another yawn, "after that she went on a trip to Johto with her family, so her sister Stella could enter a contest. She was a coordinator. Lucretia had no interest in contests so she wandered around Goldenrod until she came to an unofficial poker competition. Somehow she managed to win one of the top prizes, which was a lovely little gold and white Pidgey. Stella was furious that such a pretty pokemon was wasted on her little sister who hadn't any interest in entering contests," she explained with a chuckle. Stella probably was still mad. "A few months afterward, a friend convinced Lucretia to join Galactic. She was 17 at the time." Her gaze was focused on her fingers as she attempted to distract herself with something, since Fetch was asleep. She had paused, a slight frown on her face as she attempted to figure out how to continue, or even if she could continue.
