"Yeah and I have a trump card... I taught Shade a move that is very effective against Dark types. I don't know that I'll teach Shadow it, but I'm thinking of making him a jack of all trades so to speak. With only one ghost move and then the rest for different types of pokemon. I think he'd like that." he smiled having calmed himself enough to start sipping at his drink. Panther really did enjoy talking about his pokemon and pokemon in general. "What moves does Merry know?"

Lucas nodded approvingly, "Sounds like you're raising them really well." It was always good to consider what the pokemon preferred in addition to strategy in battle. He considered his own Merry when she was mentioned, looking down into the gold beads that stared back up at him. "Most notable is Hypnosis. She knew it from when she was a Chingling, learned through breeding, I guess. I taught her Dream Eater to complement it."

"I like the move, but it isn't very accurate. It's very useful when it works though." he thought about the last time he attempted to used it against Seth's tyranitar, it hadn't turned out well for him. still there were other battles when it worked very well. "and her other moves?"

"Double-edged blades, those kinds of moves. I can appreciate a good gamble, though." There was something of a thrill in standing over a battle with bated breath, waiting on the edge of one's metaphorical seat to see if the next strike would make contact. But his thoughts were in digression. "Uhh, Psywave and Confusion, I believe," he recalled, rubbing at his neck in embarrassment on realizing how silly he seemed to not even be sure of his only pokemon's move set. "I haven't actually battled with her a whole lot, that I can remember..."

Those were decent moves, on a chimeco, a little heavy on the psychic attacks though, and useless against dark pokemon, however those guns might just put any non ghost type right out of commission. His eyes drifted to the guns in thought when the last comment suddenly registered. "Remember?" he looked up an eyebrow raised.

"Ah..." That one had slipped out. He hadn't had any intent to share his odd habit - he would have rather ignored it himself, truth to be told - but there was no use in dodging it, he decided. "Yeah, I tend to forget things easily." His voice lowered, the carefree tone evaporating into a murmur, "Missions especially." Lucas leaned back in his chair and stretched his arms a bit, then took his hot chocolate back into his hand. "Since I don't do a whole lot of casual battling, I don't have many opportunities to reacquaint myself with Merry's attacks." His demeanor had returned to its normal friendly self, and he sipped at the sweet beverage.

Panther fell silent processing that. He wasn't quiet sure what to think. Behind his sunglasses his eyes glanced at the man and then at the guns and then at the pokemon. Sensing it was likely the same sensitive topic as before he didn't press it. Lucas could tell him in his own time if he felt the urge to, but this was team rocket and everyone here was not exactly of upstanding character, some more so then others.
After a long moment of thinking, in which he stalled by taking a drink, he finally broke the uncomfortable silence. "Casual battles are always good practice. I think they are pretty fun myself. I haven't had many of them lately, been to busy." busy sulking.

Lucas nodded, "I enjoy watching battles more than participating in them, myself. Mostly because Merry doesn't like battling without a good reason." He nudged the pokemon indicatively, and she pouted.
"Chime, chimecho..." She was a good battler, she jingled. She really was. But what should she do if she expended all her strength in a causeless bout only to find her trainer in danger moments later? She needed to be prepared to protect him whenever necessary, after all.

"Watching is good too. I can understand not liking to battle without a good reason, but you still need to practice little one. It helps make you stronger so you don't work as hard when it's needed." he smiled teasing the chimco a little. "I don't like to sit still that long. I'd wind up wanting to battle before the end of the match, or I'd get bored."

Merry frowned slightly, stealing another sip of the cocoa. She was aware the she should practice more, but it didn't make her any warmer to the idea...
"Patience is a virtue, as they say. I've picked up a few interesting tactics myself from watching others battle. ...I'll admit to falling asleep during the lengthier demonstration matches, though." It had always been in front of the new batch of trainees, too. He'd wake up suddenly and they'd all be staring at him with knowing and sympathetic grins.

"I don't blame you, I almost did myself a time or too during training." he relaxes and smiled, giving a casual glance around the cafe, which was about as empty as when he first walked in, with only a few different people. "Patients is something I'm still working on." his voice drifted off and he frowned a moment. "I don't like having to use it outside of a battle situation."

"Ironically, it takes patience to achieve patience," Lucas said thoughtfully, "so people who don't have it in their character from the start have to work a little harder. But the fact that you know that and that you're working on it is a solid start, I think." He grinned approvingly. Lucas had faced off against a lot of impatient kids in the past, but it was rare that they recognized and worked to improve their own impatience. It took a lot to admit to innate character flaws, after all.

"Of course." the sarcasm would have been hard to miss. he liked the older man but couldn't help but feel he was getting some kind of lecture, one well practiced. Still, it was a side ways complement, of sorts. He took another drink of his hot chocolate, deciding he'd better drink it before it got cold and idly watched the bar tender.

"Ah, sorry... Thinking aloud, is all." Lucas took this moment to reflect on an innate character flaw of his own: his habit of divulging wisdoms in a lecture-esque fashion. No one ever wanted to hear an old guy's speech on patience. Not even Lucas himself.
Merry detected the subtle tension that rose in the air and chimed quietly, wrapping her long tassel around her human's neck like a scarf.

"So, do you still want to have Merry met Nika or Shade? Nika is up in my room at the moment if you want to walk up there. I was originally planning on doing some training after my coffee, but it can wait." he took a completely different line of topic not really wanting to talk about his own lack of patients. Oh he had some... just not at the moment. He tugged his hat a little lower.
