Poison? "Aw hell... I- you- she is NOT my girlfriend you nutter!" he spat out, breathing heavily. "And if you knew that the stupid bottle made things disappear the whole time, why didn't ya say so? It would've saved eveyone a lot of trouble! And..."

He trailed off, looking from one bottle to the other. "What do you mean, which one? Ya don't expect me to accept letting either of 'em get hurt, or vanish, or whatever your crazy store did to them! I mean, first with that wacko marking, and the weirdo big bites, and that dumb bottle, and the whole time stopping thing- just what's your goal in tormentin us anyway? I mean, you hurt Eragon, and Illy, and- and what about me? Huh? Why din't ya do anything to me?" It was only a stalling maneuver, but he was genuinely curious. Besides, the more he asked, the more time he got to think of a plan.

Abster laughed. "I did not chose you. If I remember correctly, it was you who told the girl to search for the key. You were the one who allowed Eragon to test the bottle on his finger." he said venomously as he walked foward. He placed both bottles infront of him on a table.

"If you had offered to do the things instead of letting other's do it, your friends would have never been in this... how should we call it... predicament. It is upto you to get the means to fix the problems you could have averted."

Standing just behind the table, he waited to see what the boy would do.

"Wow... ya really think I wanted it this way? Ye're more twisted than I gave ya credit for, mister." Eriol drummed his fingers on the table next to him nervously. "How would anyone know what lookin for the key would do? And I never asked Eragon ta test that silly stuff. I couldn't even stop him, not that I didn't try. Letting people make their own choices ain't anything we can tamper with, not fairly anyway. So don't go blaming this mess on me, pops."

He stepped forward, shoving the bottle back in his pocket. "But mister, I can't say ye're all that innocent. Ya did something creepy to Eragon when we first came in. And ya didn't let us leave when we wanted to. So how d'ya explain that? Just what d'ya want from us anyway?"

"He did something wonderful to me Eriol," Eragon stepped out of the shadows. Standing beside Abster, he continued. "He made me see the beauty in the dark side of the force. The power, the abilities. I could rule the world!"

Beside him, someone groaned. A lock of golden hair could be seen from the corner of the table. Illyria sat, oblivious of the world around her.

Abster turned and glared at the boy. Idiot boy. He should not have shown himself, because now the boy would not have to choose between his friends, just save the girl. You see, Abster cured Eragon himself, he could not endanger his precious asset. The boy could be useful with his force powers. So easily manipulated...

Turning to Eriol, he growled. With a flick of the wrist, he sent the two potions flying through the air with rage.

Eriol started in shock as his friend stood next to the closest thing he had to an archenemy. "But... why? Eragon, you said..." He could barely remember anymore. Eragon had told him how he was supposed to be helping people, not ruling the world!

And what was Illy doing there? She might be annoying, not to mention a girl, but Eragon wouldn't want anything to happen to her. "Bespelled, or somethin," he muttered under his breath. "And I gotta fix them both now. Great."

He started to approach the two of them, but stopped as soon as the vials left Abster's hands. Which one was which? Eragon clearly wasn't disappearing anymore, but if he let the wrong bottle fall... Scrambling forwards, he dived for them, and managed to grab the crimson liquid from the air. The other bottle slipped through his fingers, and he winced, waiting for the tinkle of glass. Yet there was nothing but silence. Confused, he glanced up, to see... "Spectra?" The tiny creature hand managed to save the bottle, and flew it back to her nest in the boy's head.

"Okay mister, I win. I got them both. So tell me which one's gonna cure the girl, and we'll both be on out way." Eriol stared the man down unflinchingly. "We won't bother you, you won't bother us. Deal?"

Abster laughed. "Silly boy... do you really expect me to tell you?" he cackled. He motioned Eragon foward.

Eragon took a step foward. His eyes... they were different. They changed to bright red. Must have been a side effect of the spell. He crouched low to the ground, fighting stance.

Behind the counter, Illyria moaned. Man she felt like crap. She squinted. It's so dark in here. she thought. Where were they? Hadn't they been outside, walking towards the library? Wait... no... Eragon had carried her back. He seemed different, almost alien to her. Why? His eyes... his hand... something was wrong and she knew it.

She remembers seeing the mark on his hand resemble a skull. Looking around, she noticed she was back in the wicked man's shop. To her right she could see stacks of books and odd trinkets. She turned her head to the left. She saw Abster, she tried to yelp, but she couldn't. She was soo tired.

He didn't seem to have noticed her. Then she saw it. A small, glowing pendant hanging from his belt. It looked familiar, she'd seen that somewhere recently. Wait, that's the mark Eragon has! That must be what made him act so odd!

She had to do something. With what strength she had left, she pushed herself up.

Abster wasn't paying attention to the stupid girl. Would be dead soon anyway. He was watching the action below.

Just a few more inches, she thought, as she reached for the pendant. Fingers just at its edge...

Eriol coughed, holding his chest. He had to stay calm... if the man suspected anything at all, everything would go wrong. "But... if ya just tell me which one'll fix the girl, we'll leave. If ya just want him-" he pointed at Eragon with the toy lightsaber "-then let me and the girl go, and we'll leave ya alone."

So far so good... but what was that girl doing? He squinted, trying to do it inconspicuously. Something around the geezer's waist. Whatever she was up to, he knew if she was caught, it would all be over. Girls... "So mister, lookie here!" Spectra whined as she was lifted from her sleeping spot. Creature and blue vial in one hand, red vial in the other, he raised both arms. "I can't hurt you. And ya've no reason to hurt me. So just let the two of us go, how bout it mister?"

She could feel the cold metal of the pendant in her fingertips.

"The two of you..." he said as he turned, spotting Illyria atlast, alive and kicking. With a growl, he kicked the girl. She flew backwards into a bunch of books with a groan.

Eragon didn't even turn his head as his sister was thrown into the table. His gaze was trained at Eriol. His head was blank. He awaited the orders of his dark lord.

"STOP! Don't hurt 'er!" Eriol shouted, barely believing what escaped his lips. Why was he risking himself for a girl anyway? For Eragon, who didn't seem to care anymore. And because she got hurt helping all of them... twice. And... maybe she wasn't so bad after all. Maybe. And she was definitely still a girl.

Spectra cheeped loudly at Abster, dropping the vial into Eriol's backpack before fluttering over to the girl. Whistling softly at the injury, she landed gently at Illyria's feet.

Good, he thought, casting a glance in their direction. One less thing to worry about for the moment. "So, mister creepy. Ya got what ya wanted in him, I'm guessing. And if he'd rather be with you, who'm I to stop him? So I'm givin ya one last warnin- if you wanna take him, let us go. But if ya don't let me and the girl go, ya gotta at least tell us why." Steadying his breathing, he slipped a hand into his pocket casually. Almost time...

Abster cackled once more. "My plans are mines alone. I don't need to share them with the likes of you!" he said angrily. "Now! Eragon! Kill the wretched boy!" he yelled.

But Eragon didn't move.

"What are you waiting for boy? I gave you an order!" screamed Abster, furious at the outburst. He reached for the pendant... but it was gone! Turning, he saw it, clutched in the girl's hand. She was grinning.

"Teaches you to leave important things in the open." she whispered, clutching the pendant. Grabbing it's chain, she swung it to the ground. It shattered into millions of pieces. From it, a light showed bright.

When it stopped, Eragon was on the floor, gasping for breath. He looked up at Eriol and smiled. "Hey... what took you so long?" he whispered, tired from trying to fight the spell.

"So that's what that was... not bad, girl," Eriol murmured. Time for a change of tactics. Leaving someone behind wouldn't work anymore... but then, he wasn't fond of that plan anyway. In that case, there was only one thing he could think of.

Taking a deep breath, he took a step forward. "We win, pops. Ye've got nothin to keep us here. So what d'ya think we do from here? We've got numbers, and the fact that we don't need anything from ya anymore. But this is yer place, and ya probably locked the door again or somethin. So we're stuck." Eyes on the man, he slipped his hands out of his pockets and started fiddling with them behind his back subtly. "Where d'we go from here then?"

Eragon took the chance and jumped to his sister's aid. Grabbing her, he lifted her and ran to where Eriol was standing. "Whatever your thinking, do it fast. We need to get Illy out of here."

Abster growled. He didn't like where this was going. "You three shall NEVER leave this place alive!" he yelled, running towards the group.

Eriol nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, I thought you'd say somethin like that. So we can't agree. It's a shame, since I'd rather save this just in case, but whatever." Grinning, he pulled the bottle that had gotten them into all this trouble into the first place from behind his back and flung the contents towards him. "Take that, ya old geezer!" he yelled triumphantly.

"AAhhh!" yelled Abster as the liquid splashed over him. Suddenly, he no longer stood there, he vanished into thin air. The door behind the 3 crashed open with a bang.

Eragon turned. "Run!" he yelled, carrying Illyria, runnig towards the door.

Eriol quickly scooped Spectra up from the floor. "You know, if you wanted us to splash him, you could've said so better."

The winged creature cheeped back impatiently. They had no time for this! Wriggling free from his grasp, she resettled herself in his hair.

Shrugging, Eriol pocketed the empty bottle and looked around. Something didn't feel right. But then, that was one creepy old geezer. With a shudder, he turned and ran, trying to catch up with his friends. "Hey Eragon! Need help?"
