I noticed that Nirshan wasn't listed... I practice a Nirshan-Zen blend and also study a lot of Indian/Nepalese/Tibetan trudition. Really Tibet strikes me as apealing because of the amount of faith... Zen-Nirshan because I have been practicing for a long time. I actually went to pray at Engako-ji (The Temple of Perfect Enlightenment) two weeks ago.

I am Mahayana myself, as I think a lot of Americans are...either that or Zen Buddhists. I don't know why that is but there seem to be a lot of Mahayana in the states, though I like that particular "school" of Buddhism.

And here's where we bake your noodle: Zen is Mahayana. xd It's a subschool of the larger sect. 3nodding Granted, in some ways it's closer to Theravada (all this thinking! gonk blaugh ), but it is still at root Mahayana.

I'm Therevada, more specifically of the Thai Forest Tradition. Out of curiosity, why can I not vote in the poll? Was it only set for a certain amount of time?

I have heard of the Japanese Buddhism, Shinto, yes most interesting. Shinto isn't Buddhism, and Buddhism isn't Shinto. Shinto is a Japanese indigenous religion focused on ancestor and nature worship, Buddhism is originally an Indian religion that is not specifically indigenous, and is present in most all countries around the world.

The more I learn about Buddhism, the more I feel that my beliefs may be best suited for Mahayana/Zen.
What I respect most about Zen is the understanding that all things secretly have Buddha nature. I really believe this is important to realize in order not to look down on non-human beings.
One of the first times I realized that being Catholic.. Christian.. or even theistism wasn't for me... was during a sermon a priest gave when I was still quite young. God loves you more than all the birds in the sky. ... is the tone which is went. I couldn't help but think that this was rather capricious of the Lord. Why does a human have to be told they're worth more than all the birds to feel a certain way? That kind of divine love shouldn't have to be more than.. or less than. We all need each other to be who we are... doesn't that make us equals? It shouldn't matter what form we happen to be born into. The universe is so amazingly beautiful because we're all here together. (I really love photos taken from outerspace, of Earth and our galaxies... because then we really get to see this beauty for what it is.)
Merf. Sorry for getting preachy...this kind of thinking never fails to get me excited. redface

Celt person Yes, but I have heard of a faith called Shinto Buddhism. It is possible that some Japanese blend Zen and Shinto, but I've never heard of it before. I personally blend Hinduism & Buddhism, and I've heard of Christian Buddhists, and all sorts of other mixes, so its not unheard of, just not that common. wink

I consider myself to be a mix of Mahayana and Theravada, but I would say predominantly Theravada. However, I have a pure integration of a little bit of all the sects, which is nice.
