It wouldn't be done to poison or kill us, just make us nice and complacent. From the perspective of our rulers- No, not the government itself, the corporate leaders who own everything and have the power to buy everything- They would want us simple and willing to work for them because we can't figure out how to stop- A dumb, passive workforce like cattle who do the work for the low pay while the power and luxury remains in their hands forever.
I can see that, but I think effectiveness would be... gotten rid of. If we were all drones then things wouldn't flow too well or new products wouldn't be created. I understand how the governemtn would want a society that does not question their authority, but a done society wouldn't work, in my opinion.
Of course they would. You're confusing "Drone" with "Mindless". We would simply be more susceptible to taking orders. And cattle flow brilliantly in natural environments- Look at and herding species. They're not particularly bright and probably aren't great problem solvers, and they are easily herded. Likewise, our leaders want us easily herded but capable of working together. Being a drone doesn't make creativity impossible. It simply means that we are less capable of critical thought.
But if we lived in a so called "herded" society, then we would become mindless. When horses and sheep are herded they are afraid and just do what they have to, to survive. And horses are very smart.
People are herded too, my husband just said he has seen this and I do not doubt it. Think of the concentration camps, as a horrible example, but it fits. Those people were herded to wherever the Nazi's wanted them to go. They thought about escape, but they were too afraid to do anything. In that sense, the fear makes them mindless. And drone can be a synonym for mindless.
And we don't? Millions of people weren't terrified by 9/11 and H1N1 and the Avian Flu and Sars and Anthrax? Millions of people aren't working paycheck to paycheck under the capitalist system out of fear of losing their property and lifestyle? It's the same thing, just a more complex, drawn out problem. We are terrified of our leaders, following the command to be "normal" and "productive" (Productive, in this case, meaning working for them. I am not against productivity, but the concept in this society is that to be productive, in almost every instance, you must work under some such leader.) That is how we are herded. The system is set up around us, we fear losing in the system, and we are herded through the system. We are just doing what we have to do to survive, and this system makes that very profitable for a select few.
Well considering I don't fear the government, or those "disease" scares that were blown out of proportion (thousands of people die from the regular flu, 9/11 was a terrorists attack, it happens to every country and had happened before to the towers) or fear losing the system. Hell, I'd be happy to lose this crappy "system" right now. The government is screwing everyone over right now. "The people ashould not fear their government, the government should fear the people." One of the most famous quotes, that I'm sure every American knows. Or atleast, they should know. I do not think we are in such a herding society. There are many movements going on right now about the gas, WBC and the crooked politicians.
