In general I prefer just to look online for info, but there are times when a colored picture or map really is much more helpful than looking at gamefaqs.com.

Personally I think they're alot of money and once you've played the game I wouldn't use it again afterwards...I'd rather look online or in a magazine for a walkthrough.

I've never bought them. I like exploring on my own and if I REALLY can't get passed some part I look on the internet, but that's rarely. For me it takes away the fun.

I've bought one strategy guide because I couldn't get past a point in a game and finally broke down to get one. I learned then I screwed myself over in the beginning. Darn you, FFX. I generally look online to find ideas or a way around someplace.
I remember I was looking at the guides section of Barnes and Noble and some kid asked me if there were any guides available for FFVII. In 2002. The game was released in 1997 xp

Celes I buy them for the art, and only use them after I beat the game on my own first. 3nodding I usually only get strategy guides for games that I really like, as a kind of 'add-on' ninja If I ever get terribly stuck in a game, I go to gamefaqs. Cheaper.

I buy them for stupid reasons, more than half my collection are games I don't even own. I buy them for artwork, or, if I really like a series, most gameguides come with posters, and I'll buy it to put the poster up. But yeah, my usage is strictly artwork. I refuse to look through a walkthrough, I prefer to do my best to get through on my own. I don't mind helping others get through problems though, I often help with puzzles and whatnot, but I try and stay away from getting help.

Not for me since you can go on sites like http://www.neoseeker.com or http://www.gamefaqs.com if you need help, but if you want to look at the graphics of a game (like I wanted to for LoZ: Windwaker because I don't have a GameCube) then I think they're worth the $10.

I love Gamefaqs, moreso for the message boards than the actual walkthroughs, but I'm with you. Its not worth the money if its just a walkthrough with all the sites they have out there nowadays, you got to want it because you collect everything of that game series, or the artwork...

I sometimes buy strategy guides for games like StarOcean or Final Fantasy. It would be basically impossible to get through starocean without a strategy guide

I'd rather not buy the guides. It's cheating in my opinion. Plus I'm clever and intelligent enough to figure things out on my own. Unless I'm in a lazy mood...

There are times when you don't have access to the internet nor have printed off any guides. X) A lot of the time getting guides is the closest I'll get to getting artbooks. Yes, you can get anything you want off the internet but I'm sick of hearing that same old shitty arguement (used for everything). Some of us just like having the extras. Some official strategy books are crap, I'm very fond of the Piggyback brand as they put a lot of work into them.
I tend to buy guides for RPG's, if I've gotten guides for anything else then it'll have been for art reasons. Think I've even picked up guides for games I haven't got because they were going cheap & have good artwork. =D Sure, you might not always be able to see all of the images they put in there but it's better than nothing. =)
I use gamesfaq a lot for games I haven't got guides for, I don't want a guide for every game I have.

I have guides for my three favourite games & I have to say that they're totally worth it. whee Not only are they really pretty (as people have mentioned), I've found them to be really helpful. For example:
I spent over 100 hours playing Final Fantasy X shortly after I bought it, sans guide. While I did pretty good & finished the game, I was rather frustrated that I couldn't get all the bonus items. Now that I've got the guide, I know where everything is & I plan to replay the entire game soon and beat it completely. (I also have a guide for Final Fantasy X-2, only because I must get the perfect ending the first time I play it. I must. heart )
The guide for Star Ocean: Till The End of Time is really helpful for lots of reasons: it details all the sidequests, shows the stats for all the Private Actions (which affects the gameplay & the endings), & is just generally a great thing to have.
That being said, you don't play a game for the first time with a guide; it does rather take the fun out of it (I speak from experience with Lunar emo ). And it's better not to go page-by-page as that rather cramps the gaming experience, I feel. But guides are helpful, especially with the larger 100 hour-plus games. whee
And you can probably get the same information on the internet, but mostly likely not all in one place, not already printed & bound, & not quite as fun to obsess over. ninja
