From my experience, a lot of it comes from the bible. Plus I think people in general are just afraid of change or what they don't know. So the first thing they think to do is dislike or try to destroy it since they fear it so much.

Indeed most of the discrimination comes from those who believe in what the Bible says strictly. Personally I don't see why you should so brashly believe in something I can't see or sense for yourself since I'm an atheist but it's really not up to me to say. Sorry to all those religious people out there! >__<
