Starlock Samma_Knight like to garden, as is obvious. The lemon balm has taken off, but the mint had an encounter with my cat, so it took a beating. Or a chewing. The chammomile hasn't bloomed yet, but I'm patient. It looks and smells wonderful, as does the lavander. The rosemary is loving the sun and heat, and has grown two inches. If the gardens of my host family are any indication, that lemon balm is going to take over your yard within several years. The stuff spreads like mad. They have so much of the stuff at my host family's place that I can probably make a dozen small-sized jars of the herb. Good thing it makes a nice tea. whee You could sell it to guildies. ninja

Because of where I live, I'm not allowed to plant anything in the ground. Everything I have is in pots or window boxes, so no fear of it running away like mad.

I'm still experimenting around with it a little bit.

Uva Ursi is good for digestion and upset stomachs, but be sure to make tea with the leaves only, as the berries are poisonous.
Bugleweed and Motherwort is a good combination in a tea for thyroid and heart problems.
Three mints that really are good in an iced tea are Peppermint, Spearmint, and Wintergreen.
Another good iced tea combination is Licorice Root and Anise.
I've often wondered if dragon's blood resin comes from the same tree that bears dragonfruit.

Hi! I'm new to your guild but do know a lot about herbs. I've been studying for many years. Good for beginners, books by Susan Weed. She teaches about herbs many would consider weads, such as dandelion, burdock, nettle and red clover-the things most of us can harvest right out our back doors-or parks if you live in an apartment. You would be surprised how good many of these are for you, considering how many people try to get them out of their yards! Glad to find this discussion, feels like I fit in!

Dandelion is good for many things-the flower heads can be fried and eaten like mushrooms, the roots ,if harvested in the fall, are full of iron and can either be put in soups and foods-or in capsules, leaves are good in a tea for anything wrong with urinary tract, and the sap from the stem is good for bug bites, acne, burns, boils, many skin conditions. Do not harvest roots in the spring though, they need to gather the soil's nutrients all season and they taste really bitter if gathered to early.

I saw a man along side the highway this friday, harvesting the mass amounts of dandelions at an exit. ><

GuardianIceQueen That's funny that you say that. I saw a man along side the highway this friday, harvesting the mass amounts of dandelions at an exit. >< I have a book that has a recipe for dandelion wine (actually that was one of the main reasons I got it). I also know you can eat the young leaves as a green (like collards, turnip, or poke) or in salads. The whole plant is useful.... Just remember though, people tend to put poisons on weeds so be careful about that. There was an episode of Ham on the Street where he was doing "free foods" and he did whole dandelion plants cooked in a solar oven.

Yeah, I could never harvest the Dandelions out of my parents yard-Dad's always trying to poison them out. Also, it's not always a good thing to harvest along side busy roads or highways because the plants suck up a lot of the really bad fumes and pollution from passing cars. They help clean up the air there but we really don't want that in our systems.
