Probably throwing out ~1k of my most recent work, maybe a bit more. Really need to finish planning the plot arc of the second half of the book. Once I figure out the major events, I think I'll be able to move pretty quickly. I've outlined some plot points along the way, but just need the larger arc figured out. I hate getting stalled like this, but I really do just need to think on it for a day or two.

I'm so close to the end. I mean, I'm coming up on 40k words, and I'm predicting this book to be somewhere around 55-60k, so I'm really getting there. Have a pretty good outline for the rest, and I'm hoping to have it done in maybe... 2 weeks?

I'm hoping to find people who are able to exchange manuscripts the week after it's done, and hopefully who also have time to read it quickly. I'm hoping to have a few reader responses by the end of the month, so I really need to keep moving if that's going to be a possibility.

I'm really nervous about this book. I'm at the point where I've been thinking about it and working on it since January, so it's becoming harder and harder to judge pacing and things. The last chapter I wrote I was convinced was dragging, but I had my husband read it and he said nope, not at all.

It just took so much time to think about and write the chapter that I felt like it had gone on forever. It's why it really does help for me to put the book away for a bit when I'm done... which is why it will be nice to have other people's books to critique, get my book out of my head a little.

Off to eat breakfast then try to get to work.

I'm at more than 47k since I posted 4 days ago, which means I'm on track for finishing within a week. Then 1-2 days for a full read-through before sending it to a reader and asking for more people to exchange with.

The other good news is that I've decided what I want to work on once I'm ready to start a new book. For a middle grade audience instead of YA this time, and hoping to keep it lighthearted and between 30-40k.

That plus helping my husband figure out the book he's working on should keep me plenty busy for the rest of the summer.

That's lovely, you both write? Glad to see you near that finishing point!

  • Update Date: 7/14/10
    Word Count: 54,873
    Page Count: 196

    And I'm done!

Well, with the first draft, anyway. whee

Finished draft has been emailed to 2 people for feedback. I have one manuscript to read in exchange, which I need to do this weekend.

I'm anxious about the book, anxious about the previous book, and really need to start something new. This time, though, I am going to try to do a more detailed plot outline before starting. Arbitrary deadline for starting to put words down on it is July 21, and after that I'm hoping for 500 words/day except when I'm on vacation in Florida.

Got comments back from 3 readers. 2 of them agreed on overall issues that could be improved, and they seemed to like it. Sent off again, taking a break from it while I wait.

Starting the new book today, and even have a decent outline for once. We'll see if it helps. This one is going to be for a younger audience, so it should wrap up at only 30k or so.

Dude, take a break, you write so much! Lol! Seriously, I wish I could be at your productivity level. How many books have you written? And how many are published? Anyway, congrats on the book finish. I've only finished one book ever but it was the proudest moment of my life, and my dad told me that he had never been more proud of me once I told him the news. It's really a great feeling, isn't it?

I probably sound faster than I am. It took me around 7 months to finish the first draft. Past books took longer, though. I'm getting much better at putting words down (relatively) quickly.

This is my 3rd completed book. None are published yet, but working toward that. I've gotten fairly close with both of the others, and the second one isn't out of the running yet. But the industry moves so slowly, so the best thing to do is work on something new while waiting. whee

Congrats on finishing a book! It's a big accomplishment. Lots of people say they'd like to write a book some day, but to sit down and make yourself do it--well, not so many do that part. XD

I remember the feeling of finishing my first, though it was many years back. It was lovely.

Glad you have finished Racheling and you are getting feedback from it. I don't have anyone to send my manuscripts to so I take one storyline a year and post it on FictionPress to see what critism I get.

Racheling: I got my book done in a month, but it wasted me so much that I didn't started up writing again until May. I'm sure one day I'll get around to editing it, lol, but I recognize that it was my first book and will never be that good. I guess pacing is a lot better than what I did, but I still have no regrets. NaNoWriMo is the perfect contest for the person who keeps saying they'll write a novel one day and yet hasn't. You luckily that you don't have that problem. It seems to me that I only write novel length stories when contests are involved xd

Dude, I just noticed that there was seven months between NaNoWriMo and when I started writing again, lol. And you probably at least have something readable. xd

DesertRoseFallen: You should take a risk and try selling one of your manuscripts. I mean, I may just be some idiot naive kid, but my whole life my father has told me to take risks. If I hasn't taken a risk I wouldn't have been section leader this past year in band, I wouldn't have applied to the college or decided on the college I'm attending, I wouldn't have asked my roommate to be my roommate, and I wouldn't have even entered NaNoWriMo and written my first novel.

Send it in! Send it in! I dare you to send it in!

I think it's great that NaNo can motivate people to write a book in a month! I just don't think I could do it. Or at least, not when I had college or work to manage at the same time. Just not enough brainpower for that and consistently putting down thousands of words a day. Of course, being unemployed right now, I might be able to manage this year. xp

I do work better with deadlines, but right now the only deadline I have is a self-imposed "I want the book to be ready to go sooner" which isn't exactly specific. XD

I think you'll learn a lot from editing your book, even if ultimately you set it aside. And you should definitely not have any regrets. NaNo is all about motivation and fun, right? And um, really hard work in the middle of the fun.

@Desert -- I asked for a few people to trade on another forum and we read each other's work. Other than that I'm not part of any sort of writing group or other place to get feedback. Just lucked out and found a few people for a one time thing.

No writing today, but I have time to get back on track. Set a goal for finishing the first draft of this book by September 30, which I think is very reasonable considering the plan is to finish at around 30k (since it's a children's book). 1,700 words in, too, which is a decent start. That's only 422 words a day. And even if I start out slow, which is likely, once I'm around 60% done I seem to speed through to the end.

I'm taking a bit of a break from writing and spending time thinking and plotting. Yesterday I was reading a book I ended up not liking much, so I was thinking about one of my two new WIPs, and came up with a way to restructure it. I really love the new direction, and the plot will be much more focused now. I'm glad that this time I came up with a new direction before I wrote 15k.

I probably won't get much done this week, though. I'm going to be traveling (and worrying about my dog, even though I have two people trading off dog-sitting).

I still feel like I have a lot to learn. Perhaps after I've finished my Uni course I will try but now is too early.

Taking a break is sometimes a very good idea, I hope you enjoy it!
