omg, braces plus instrument sucks. I play the trombone and almost every time I play my lip splits. then all of your blood goes into your instrument, then it sounds all watery. it sucks!!

i never really had problems playing my clarinet when i had braces; the only problems were the day or two after the wires got slightly tightened *shrug* i would imagine it gets pretty painful for trumpet and trombone players though...

I play the Tenor Sax and when I first got braces it made me sound a little bit worse than I had but after about a week, I actually sounded better than I did.

At least two ppl in my band are in each of the types of instrument. In the woodwinds one is a sax and one is a flutist, and they are really good at their instruments. THe best in their instrument. THere is one trumpeteer with braces and he is the best in the group. and thats saying something. I'm a trumpeteer. IT is not in our nature to say we are second best. Now I am stopping before I break the skin again.(I tend to pinch myself whenever he plays)

I play oboe too, and when I first got braces, it was horrible. xp It completely screwed up my embouchure. However, I guess I eventually adjusted to it.
I march alto sax, and now that really hurt a bit. Playing for such a long time, plus playing oboe on the side really left callouses in my mouth. mad ouchies.

I play bass clarinet, and regular clarinet... braces have never really bothered me, but sometimes my teeth are oddly sensative, so when I wet my reed, or my teeth rub against it, I shiver. Stupid sensative teeth. So no... braces dont bother me when I play.

I have braces and I play the flute. It isn't too bad, but when I first got them I had to adjust my embouchure a little bit.

my braces don't effect my playing at all, and i play the tombone. i've heard people complain about braces and playing before in our band, so i don't know, maybe i'm just weird.

It's honestly not bad.
Try to avoid playing after you get them tightened; that'll hurt. Otherwise, it's not bad at all.

Well, I think it depends on which instrument you play. Since you play oboe, I don't think braces should give you much trouble, but I'm not sure.
I have braces on all of my teeth and I play the clarinet. When I first got them and tried playing, I couldn't because it hurt my top teeth too much to bite down on the top of the mouthpiece. But after I got used to have braces, they didn't hurt anymore, and I just had to get used to playing the clarinet with braces a little.
After two weeks, I could play clarinet fine, and I still can. In fact, now that I've had my braces for almost two months, playing the clarinet feels exactly the same as playing when I used to no have braces.

I just got mine off, but when I had 'em it wasn;t too bad. Now that I have 'em off I don't know what to think because they took my French Horn away. I have to wait till the beginging of my Freshman year to get a new one from the hight school. I've been goingm through a band withdrawl and it's driving me insaaaane. Yea... so I can't wait to see what it's like to play without them. My friend, who got his off not long ago, says it's hard to get used to. It's like playing the first time with braces. I'm looking forward to it ><

My friend plays the flute! She was one of the best flute players! But she got braces and it took her a while to get used to playing with them. So i guess it sort of effects how well you play but if u practice and get used to playing with them u should do good! biggrin
