ⅠⅠⅠ. ❝ In which Master Halloran's Correspondance is Returned. ❞ Letter from Ambrose Carlis A crisp, slightly yellowed envelope emblazoned with the wax seal of the Fellowship, the all seeing eye, came to rest upon the desk of the Northern Bases' apothecary master, Oren Halloran. In an ink so dark a purple it appeared black unless illuminated were scrawled the apothecary's name and that of his apprentice, Theodore Lucas, alongside a note of importance upon one of its corners -- the letter came directly from Anica, the heart of Shyregoed and the Fellowship itself.
Master Halloran and Apprentice Lucas,
Many moons and months have passed since the apprenticeship between you two began and a great deal many things more have occurred elsewise. Time is fleeting, never ceasing, and word has been sent from the Grand Magus herself that all of our allies are to be strengthened as much as possible. We have need of you and your apprentice. The results of this may very well decide whether the apprenticeship continues or it is dropped for different opportunities. The Fellowship, for so long, was pivotal to this entire country and even among the field of science we had an edge in our apothecaries. Surely it is of no surprise that, next to their accomplishments, the Council's modern medicine is beginning to take hold and render apothecaries obsolete. Both of your positions, therefore, are in danger of being made redundant.
The Council's base of operations, Imisus, is much better suited to the growing and caring of herbs that would be necessary for an apothecary's work. In fact, many such plants are native only to the Eastern shore of Panymium which gives the Council an edge. While the Fellowship and Council are indeed allies, and Fellowship presence exists within Dorwick and Edgecrest, these locations are lacking both in a particular herb and the apothecaries that would be able to utilize it. A temporary relocation is in order because of this and travel will be provided due to the nature of this operation. The locations in question that most easily carry this rare plant lie along Imisus' Northern coast, between Pont and Montburg though reports say it is most prolific between Ald and Gadu. We have contacted some Fellowship families in the area to assist in this venture and enclosed are a list of addresses of families we had correspondence with.
The herb in question is one that must be given the utmost care. It is known in Ardenian as Mandragora and is easily identifiable from its vibrant purple blossoms and thick leaves. Collection and proper use of its blooms and seeds may give the Fellowship and its entire collection of dwindling apothecaries the edge they need to get a foothold in the silent rivalry between potions and medicine. It is a plant well worthy of study that, due to its rarity, has thus far been unable to be examined at great length or depth. Any additional discoveries or observations made must be carefully transcribed and provided to us. Rest assured, such advancements will be well rewarded.
