Biohazard EXTREME

After watching Advent Children and playing Dirge of Cerberus, I refuse to play anymore FF7 spinoffs. And yeah, I heard that Crisis Core is better than the other two, but I don't care. I don't want my FF7 expanded on. As far as I'm concerned, the whole story starts and ends with FF7.

well thats your choice. never played dirge of cerebus, tho i do want to im curious. and i like advent children, specially the expanded one on blue ray. crisis core is diff cause its not really a spin off. its a prequel. its about what lead up to ff7. its neat cause second it ends is right where ff7 starts.

Yeah, but prequels can be even worse. Most of the time when a game franchise goes back to before the game and try to retcon to fix plot holes, or answer things people don't know, it usually turns out pretty bad. Resident Evil 0 is the perfect example.

Still, after playing Dirge of Cerberus, it almost made me not want to play FF7 ever again. It pretty much ruined it for me. I got over it after about 2 years of avoiding any FF7 stuff. So I'm not gonna mess with that delicate balance. As far as I'm concerned, anything outside of FF7 itself is as good as my imagination, and no further.

Well, I'm not gonna. I mean, you also said you liked Advent Children, and since I think it sucked... Obviously we have different ideas about what FF7 should be.

Yeah, but it's not about the games themselves. It's about the overall storyline. That's what I'm talking about. You play FF7, and get the full story out of it, and that is what it is. Then Advent Children, or Dirge, or Crisis Core comes along and says, "Here's what else happened." And some games shouldn't have that. Especially games like FF7 which didn't need it at all. It was good BECAUSE it ended so vaguely, where you don't know EXACTLY what happened. If you start adding things to the storyline, it pretty much makes it a completely different story, and some games are made for a story to build on. But Final Fantasy games never were. Each Final Fantasy game is in its own univese, and as a result, when they were making FF7, I'm sure they never said, "Here's what we're gonna do for the sequel." they said, "Here's the story. That's all there is to it."
And any sequel, prequel and spinoff they make, will AT BEST not live up to the story of the original. And at worst, in the case of Dirge of Cerberus, butcher the storyline completely.
It's got nothing to do with gameplay.

That's... Really got nothing to do with anything. My point is that I play FF7 for the storyline, and in an RPG, it's the most important factor to me. If RPGs had no storylines, I wouldn't bother playing them at all.
So with certain games, the storyline is something I hold sacred. I guess you could say I'm an FF7 purist. And tampering with it, creating spinoffs, sequels, prequels... Especially ones as bad as AC and Dirge... It bastardizes the franchise, and ruins it for me. Pretend Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus never happened... Then we wouldn't know exactly what happened after FF7... And frankly, I don't want to know. When I play FF7, as far as I'm concerned, AC and Dirge don't exist.

Well, what am I supposed to do? Watch Advent Children and pretend that it has nothing to do with FF7 at all? Why am I watching it then?
I watched it BECAUSE I loved FF7, and because this was like a sequel. And I genuinely disliked it. I disliked the plot, I absolutely hated the way they portrayed the characters... So yeah, after watching something like that, it almost changes your whole view of what the story and the characters are. I go to play FF7, and I see Reno, for example, and all I could think of is, "What an idiot he was in AC," and the same for every character. And I no longer have that connection with the story and the characters, because whenever I replay the original (which I have done about 5 or 6 times maybe) I'd think of the big picture, how crappy the events that happend to them later are, and how badly they'll be portrayed 2 years after FF7.

Of course, I isolated myself from all FF7 related things for about 2 years, and since then, I played FF7, and was able to enjoy it again. But I'm not gonna touch another spinoff, sequel or prequel.
