I still think that you would need the same amount of land (if not more) to grow organic vegan proteins as you would to raise farm animals, organic or not. Unless there's something I don't know about vegan protein that makes it far superior to animal protein in the production sense.
For a complete protien you'd need to mix. Soy mixed with brown rice is a complete protien. The problem is getting b vitamins. Alot of vegans don't study and go for it but forget their b vitamins which supports brain function greatly. But you can get b vitamins from a form of algea and if I'm not mistaken certain yeasts.

one of our guild members made an interesting post about "China forces woman into abortion at EIGHT months for breaching one-child policy"

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/extended-discussion/something-to-make-pro-choicers-pro-lifers-think/t.66581937/?_gaia_t_=616

"The policy leads to an estimated 13 million abortions every year, with many of those ordered by local authorities. Infanticide is also widespread in many rural areas."

I was completely oblivious to the statistics... and to think how many baby girls are killed because the fathers want boy's to carry on their name...

what a sick sad world we live in sweatdrop
China seems to be as bad as the catholics with birth control! (Probably worse...) Well good thing it seems we will get an oppertunity if things play out right with North Korea to lower our populations =)

I've read quite a bit lately on how it would help a lot actually...

http://www.animalaid.org.uk/images/pdf/factfiles/wreck.pdf

http://factoidz.com/give-up-red-meat-to-help-save-the-planet/

have you looked at how much land is used for large factory farms?
and how much grain it really takes to feed the cows, etc?

something to think about anyway..

I'm just going to say that I didn't read the links; not because I don't care but because I don't think it's necessary to read them for me to make my point of equivalent exchange.

I know there is a lot of land used for factory farming, but it would take even more to raise organic livestock. It takes a lot of grain to feed the cows, but it would take a whole lot more land to feed them all grass. People don't want to give up meat.

Growing large amounts of food organically would take a ridiculous amount of land to produce what we produce now because crop loss from pests, disease, drought, etc. would take a much heavier toll without pesticides and GMOs.

I just don't see it as being feasible myself. Maybe it is, but coming from someone that has grown up on a farm, the son of farmers, I don't see it as feasible for the farmers or for the consumers. Costs would skyrocket.

There has to be a trade-off: You either have factory farms condensed into a relatively small area and you use pesticides and GMOs, or you use huge amounts of land (and contend with the deforestation and habitat destruction that causes).

I wasn't talking about organic livestock. I was talking about organic beans and lentils and oats and different grains. (Stuff you soak for so many hours to let out the phytic acid, ect) Other sources of proteins and whatnot.. Organic soy? *shrug* There'd be double the land mass and you'd get a lot more out of it as far as I could tell.. someone correct me if I'm wrong

I still think that you would need the same amount of land (if not more) to grow organic vegan proteins as you would to raise farm animals, organic or not. Unless there's something I don't know about vegan protein that makes it far superior to animal protein in the production sense.

I'd be very interested to see the data comparing yield and space and cost for the two very different types of farm.

Me too. The ultimate point I'm trying to make though is this: In order to feed the same amount of people, the same amount of aggregate resources are going to have to be applied in some form or another, whether those resources be time, money, fertilizer, land, etc. Law of Conservation of Matter and all that.

http://www.guerrillagardening.org/

this strays from the original topic. but still...
I found this site today. it's fantastic!... more people need to focus on growing good food within their own communities using the land available.

I've also read about school programs being implemented where they grow gardens! so awesome.. I wish I could see gardens all around the neighbourhood and in school yards too.. that is something that SHOULD be taught in school!

fight the food crisis (depopulation by starvation).

I did an essay for my senior project last year. Here's what I wrote:

Fluoride is an ingredient commonly found in toothpaste, but recently the American Government has been introducing fluoride into our water. Toothpaste bottles have clear warnings on their labels stating that if the toothpaste is ingested, to call poison control. This warning exists due to the existence of fluoride in the toothpaste. In fact, fluoride is more toxic than lead and only slightly less toxic than arsenic.[1] Fluoride is also highly biologically active, even at low concentrations. This being said, fluoride consumption in water causes health problems such as hormonal and neurochemical interferences, chromosome damage, morphological changes within the kidneys and brain, formation of beta amyloidal alluvium(a characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease), hypothyroidism, bone and joint diseases(including bone cancer), sperm damage, and many, many more.[2] This will lead to sooner death and complications with fertility, effectively lessening the population. Ironically enough, one Texan male by the name of Kay Tuner, who is in a group called Bexar Safe Water Committee, said to USA Today when being interviewed for the voting on Texas’ fluoridation of water:

“Fluoride will be just like tobacco, asbestos, lead, DDT, benzene…Remember when those were safe?”[3] The United States of America is one of the only countries still fluoridating their water supply. They state this is due to prevention of tooth decay and lack of children receiving dental care due to low health care. Although tooth decay exists in many communities in America, no significant difference has been seen since the fluoridation of water has begun. Actually, the benefits of fluoride are all topical and not systemic, so ingestion of fluoride is not needed for dental health at all.[4] So why does the American Government still force fluoride down the throats of Americans? Importantly enough, fluoride does reduce the chance of fertility and cause many health problems that are lethal, which could be a measure taken in order to control the human population in America.

"Sterilization, abortion, and other forms of birth control that pertain to them are also noticeably related to population control. The American’s tax money finances many programs and organizations that help fight for population control through birth control, and one of the most famous is an organization called “Planned Parenthood”, founded by a woman named Margaret Sanger. Although most people support Planned Parenthood and Margaret Sanger, her quotes that are morbidly strewn across in her books are not popular among the supporters, writing impressions like "The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it".[1] Perhaps this wasn’t one of the most convincing things to say about birth control, but it is assumed that Margaret meant it full-heartedly. As it seems in most of her writings and speeches, Sanger thinks that she has a right to say who should have children and who shouldn’t, as if playing god. An example of this would be an address by her stating “It now remains for the U.S. government to set a sensible example to the world by offering a bonus or yearly pension to all obviously unfit parents who allow themselves to be sterilized by harmless and scientific means. In this way the moron and the diseased would have no posterity to inherit their unhappy condition. The number of the feeble-minded would decrease and a heavy burden would be lifted from the shoulders of the fit”.[2]

What is the “unfit” to Margaret? Most supporters would say it would be children or teenagers who are having reckless sexual relations, yet Sanger gave clues in her other writings on whom she thought was “feeble-minded” and “diseased”. Take for example another quote from Margaret: “The minister’s work is also important and he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members” or a quote from George Grant upon Planned Parenthood: "The bottom line is that Planned Parenthood was self-consciously organized, in part, to promote and enforce White Supremacy. ... It has been from its inception implicitly and explicitly racist"[3].

So what’s the big idea? Simple; Margaret Sanger wanted to rid the world of who she thought was “unfit” and “diseased” through the birth control clinics she created, and Americans are paying to support her ideas. Evidence of this is in yet another writing of hers explaining in a letter to Dr. W. E. Burghardt DuBois, [The clinic]"was established for the benefit of the colored people".[4] Why are these things not being talked about or media-sized? I think a former Planned Parenthood board member said it perfectly, stating "Blacks are not quiet about the issue because they do not care, but rather because the truth has been kept from them"."
