Clendyx sheathes his sword and picks up the gear, strapping it onto his back, keeping one of the Glass Swords out with his shield. "Maybe this is useful, if it can cut through your magic barrier like that, Poa. Let me know if you need to use one of these, guys." At that, he begins to follow her, keeping an eye around him.

((I see no objections to moving along. All right then. Clendyx will equip the sword and the rest goes in the "treasure bag" pending somebody claiming it.))
You follow Poa into the now open tower, descending down a long, winding staircase to the next floor. It seems that this one floor is nearly halfway down the tower, though it's hard to judge thanks to the lack of windows. The stairway opens into the next floor through an ornate doorway, but that is where the pleasantries end. Cages line the entire room and dangle from the ceiling, and while most of them are empty, some of them contain living creatures. Most are wild animals, but several humans are trapped in the cages. They seem to have been subjected to some mighty terrible tortures, covered in wounds as they are. Their gear and weapons have been stripped (if they had any) and now all that shields them from the permeating chill of the place is what appears to be potato sacks with holes for appendages in them. One of them perks up at your approach, fearful at first. Then the realization of who you all are (or aren't) washes over him like a tidal wave of relief. He stands in his cage and waves frantically at you, completely ignoring his grievous wounds.
"Hey!" He whispers harshly, "Come here! Please don't leave me and my men here!"

"Poa looks at the room in horror. It was a sight she had never seen before nor would ever wish to see again. "My god... perhaps it was best we did not go with them, my impressions of this culture is coming off a bit...barbaric!" Poa sees the person motioning to her and rushes over to his side. "You speak our language! Tell us, what is happening here!"

"I'd bet money to say that most of these are probably the men we're looking for." He looks around, taking a moment to observe everything. "Maybe Smartass was pretty smart to have an exploding sword. Hmm...if these guys aren't wearing anything, then there's got to be more of those...tribesmen...around. They'd probably stash the clothing somewhere...like a storeroom. And the way they were with our weapons, I'd say that they think metal is pretty valuable. If we get out of here, I'm going to figure out how to close that damn gate for good." He turns to the man who spoke up. "We need to know who you are, how you got here, and any weaknesses about these people. As far as I can tell, they can block magic, which means they don't practice it themselves."

The man, to his credit, calmly explains his situation to you all.
"My name is Alexander Gates. I led the men that originally went through this gate...but nothing went to plan. We managed to battle our way out of this tower and into the city proper, but then they just poured out from that cursed citadel and surrounded us. They shouted at us to drop our weapons...I think...But with so many of them, I just couldn't risk undo hardships for my men. As you can see, I did a fantastic job of that. After that, they began to torture us, asking us about something. I can't understand their language though, but they don't seem to either know or want to except that fact. And you're right, they do value metal, but I don't know for what. All their weapons are made from that strange glass of theirs. My men and I call it Glassteel, not very inventive, but it gets the job done I figure. I don't know why, but they've tortured me far less than my men. I haven't even seen some of them in a day or two...I fear the worst." He sighs deeply as he runs his hand down his face. "Weaknesses...weaknesses..." He thinks, "Well, they don't seem to like fire very much. They don't even use torches. The lights in this place aren't fire, they're bioluminescent birds native to this place. We call them Sundrops, since they're small, and bright as the sun itself. The people here seem to worship them...And on that note, your half right about the magic thing. Most of them don't practice magic, but the ones that do seem to lead them with an iron fist. For them to be able to rule so many can only mean that they're either much smarter or much stronger than the others...my guess is the latter. Hell, you should have seen the look on their faces when Sten whipped up a bolt of lightning. They practically shat themselves!" Alexander suddenly becomes grim as he looks Poa, the closest to him, dead in the eye. "My men...other than us two that are here...I think they took them to that citadel in the distance. I don't know how, or why, but they've been embedding those glass shards in their faces and such. Sten, in the opposite cage over there, seems to be about half done with his "treatment". He hasn't even moved or spoken in at least a day or two. But miss...you must save my men. They're like my very brothers, and to loose them would be...too much."

Poa, touched by their tragic tale, reaches through the bars and grips Alexander with her wooden yet strangely soft hands. Her gaze was strangely comforting. "We were sent here by your employer Dr. Dreitzler. I promise you, by the strength of my father, we will get you out of here and do our best to rescue your other men. Now I need you to stand back from the lock." Waiting for the gentleman to move to the corner of his cell, she points her finger atthe lock and with a magic word blasts it with a small burst of energy.

"Oh, boy, they're experimenting. Alright, time to show these bastards who's boss." At that, he pulled out a torch from his pack, and lit it up. "Alexander, we'll help you gather all your men, and we'll guard you until you get through the portal. Then, we're going to rescue the men from the citadel, maybe crack some heads, and head home with a few 'souveniers' for the doctor." At that, he busted the lock off of another cage with his bare hands, opening the door so that the next man could get out.

Alexander steps gingerly from his cage, the scope of his wounds obvious in his steps. "Thank you..." He says, relief obvious in his voice. Sten though, doesn't move from his cage. Instead he begins to mutter mind-numbingly fast in some indecipherable yet oddly familiar language...

LindseyIV Van, had been standing silently during this exchange moved to regard the strange ramblings of Sten, furrowing his brow he tightens his grip on the handle. A torrent of horrifying images of his torture, the terrible emotions he feels and some kind of inner protection all batter your mind at once. But in the moment or two that you managed to break through, you can tell that nearly half his mind has been dominated by some powerful being. And while you can't understand the language the intention is clear: kill them all.

"This man's mind has become enthralled to an alien power." Van says holstering his handle then moving swiftly to subdue Sten non lethally before his cries reach their intended recipients.
(Tell me if I need to make an action roll to see if I can knock this character out with a punch.)

Oblivious to what was going on in the minds of Van and the other explorer, Poa casts some minor heal spells on Alexander to mend his wounds and relief some pain. "What!" she exclaims when Van tells them what is going on. We have to get him out of here then and through the portal. We must break whatever has a hold on him!"

Van comes in quick and precise, landing a debilitating strike to the neck which causes Sten to fall limp within his cage. He seems to be unconscious to be sure, and his slow, even breathing is testament to his relaxed state. "Many of my men went crazy in these cages. I thought it was only the stress of not going home. But foreign powers holding sway over his mind...that is another matter entirely. With my wounds healed, I can carry him back. There is only one way up or down this tower, so I can make the journey myself. I'll tie his hands and wrists, if only to keep him from injuring himself or others when he wakes up." Alexander gathers up some of the rope lying around the room. The presence of dried blood can only mean that the rope was used to keep people restrained before. Alexander ties Sten's arms and legs securely and lugs him over a shoulder. His wounds aren't completely healed, but for the most part only minor scrapes and bruises persist. "I'll take him up and join the camp outside the portal. I know where they'll be. Thank you for all your help. Also, if you come upon any of my boys try to save them. But if they are lost to their madness...don't let them suffer at its hands any longer, if you catch my meaning."
