Also if you really want to get picky about the definition of a music genre you might as well say rock is not a music genre because the definition of rock is "A naturally formed aggregate of mineral matter constituting a significant part of the earth's crust. (from dictionary.com)" You might as well say pop is not a music genre because "pop" is a noise.. and metal is also not a genre because it means "Any of a category of electropositive elements that usually have a shiny surface, are generally good conductors of heat and electricity, and can be melted or fused, hammered into thin sheets, or drawn into wires. Typical metals form salts with nonmetals, basic oxides with oxygen, and alloys with one another. " Maybe we should rename all of those to? Words have more then one meaning.. and im sure the goths that invaded rome had little to do with gothic buildings and Mary Shelly's writing.
They are not harmful labels. No one is going to be hurt because someone classified music so people would be able to find something under their interests quickly. Music is not going to have its feelings hurt. It is not the same as labeling a person so there is no need to be so upset about it.

Im saying if you are going to say gothic music cannot be called that because one definition says it is a style of building why should you be able to say "rock" is a music genre because there is a definition that says it is a material. Same goes for pretty much any genre.. "pop" and "rap" are both sounds.. so the same goes for them. Words can mean more then one thing. "Gothic" has alot of meanings. I tend to relate music more so to the writing/ mood definition. Not buildings. Labeling people isent so great because people dont work that way. Labels on inatimate things like CDs and Soup can be good things because it helps people find stuff. Understand? By the way.. if you look up the word "goth" on dictionary.com it also says "A style of rock music that often evokes bleak, lugubrious imagery" along with many other definitions.
