We have VR = Valtion Rautatiet = The state's/government's railroads. confused When they work they work, but oh dear lord when something goes wrong... then you end up standing at a station waiting for a train for hours in the -20C weather. And every winter the people at VR are shocked because there's this weird white stuff coming from the skies and that the temperatures go below freezing. Weird stuff. And for some reason the trains we have are manufactured in like Spain or somewhere where the temperatures rarely go below freezing so no wonder the brakes/gears/everything freezes or gets stuck or breaks.

I have a buttload of stories to tell about the excellency of our railroads.

There you go.

Polish train system is theoretically private, though, as you can figure, it was turned into a commercial group from a previously public institution 10 years ago. Hence this still works as a public institution. *points to Mana's statement above* (well, ok, our trains were made in Poland, not in Spain).

I really, really hope that once Deutsche Bahn is able to start service in Poland the trains will really start to be more usable.

I was shocked to learn that nobody else's train systems are run by Kangaroos. Seriously, what the ******** class="clear">

Come to the US and behold Amtrak. Kangaroos would be a vast improvement.
Lets hire some, but make them work for less then minimum wage.

MUCH less. You could just pay them in grass, which might decrease salary expenses enough to actually make Amtrak a profitable enterprise...

I think you may be on to something.

In all seriousness though, the reason your train system and my train system sucks the ******** d**k, is that they ARE in fact enterprises privately owned.

Well I don't know about yours, but it probably is since America is full of s**t as far as everything socioeconomic goes. smile

I don't know if you've noticed this, but about the only things in the US that work ARE privately owned. Pretty much every government run operation in our country is disastrously mismanaged.

This.

Passenger rail in this country was a dying industry in the face of air travel and an extensive interstate highway system. Of course, Uncle Sam decided he knew best and stepped in in the 1970s to create Amtrak. Ever since then, it's been unable to even cover its costs of operation, to say nothing of making a profit and becoming self-sufficient. Little more than a taxpayer money pit.

That's where the bad attitude comes from.

Why shouldn't it be funded by tax? Just like hospitals should.

I also haven't really noticed, because I don't live there. Nor do I care enough to really investigate past documentaries and word of mouth. wink

That's a poor analogy, because the only alternative to going to a hospital is not going, which more than likely will result in death. Conversely, there are plenty of viable alternatives to rail - air travel, for one. Much faster and, statistically speaking, safer than rail, and costs about the same.

I don't think you understood.

I was referring to Health Insurance, and hospitals kicking people onto the streets or driving them to hospitals in Canada that will treat them for free.

Hospitals should be tax funded, so it's free, etc etc. Same for trains.

Also who the hell needs to fly to get to a fifteen minute destination?

The trains must not be as important in America as they are here, not everybody can afford petrol or a car, and ******** rely on the train system to get anywhere.

Only if those taxes are paid in a country as rich as Norway.

Believe me, paying for these things, especially healthcare, from taxes does NOT work in an average country. Personal experience.

You have personal experience running a country?

Less military funding etc.

Seer Misconception

You have personal experience running a country?

No. I have personal experience using a tax-funded healthcare. And I have a comparison with personally purchased insurance - funded healthcare. Yes, the latter is more expensive. But works better. And makes people aware it's them who pay for healthcare.

To secure peace, prepare for war.
