Is magic not a part of steam punk too? gonk
I was thinking that an underground city sounds kindda nice too. But thats a big change.
After seeing your design for the Airship idea it kindda scares me because it kindda looks like the Titanic... but besides that is seems like a wonderful idea. With a ship you would be able to travel by air or by sea, and im sure that we would be able to think of a way for it to stay landed, not move, but just land on ... well land.

DarkMusica Is magic not a part of steam punk too? gonk Not inherently; but there's plenty o' steampunk with magic. DarkMusica I was thinking that an underground city sounds kindda nice too. But thats a big change. I know what you mean ~ I originally saw my 'island' as a means to include all different ideas ~ since you could have an underwater section, underground section, coastal section, and (potentially) a flying section. All have their charms. DarkMusica After seeing your design for the Airship idea it kindda scares me because it kindda looks like the Titanic... but besides that is seems like a wonderful idea. With a ship you would be able to travel by air or by sea, and im sure that we would be able to think of a way for it to stay landed, not move, but just land on ... well land. The Titanic! Dear me, I wouldn't want that, but thanks for your approval. smile Aye, 'twould be able to sail upon the sea, and I was thinking said island would serve as its main dock for landing.

Mylian Not nearly mad enough, when there is a madder option. If you're worried about the atmosphere just have a pressurized dome, it'll be so much more picturesque. And taller buildings extending through the dome could act as structural support for it. Docks would be outside the dome, and the dockhouses and customs points would have airlocks. I'd hate to live inside a dome, an airships sounds much more exciting!

Captain Amaranth A domed city? That sounds remarkably sane compared to one inside a giant boat. Nothing to see here, why are you even reading this anyway?^ This the kind of thing you had in mind? Yes, that does look nice. Are those additional docks halfway up the dome? Perhaps a toroidal gas envelope underneath the perimeter, with a few large rotating discs underneath as gyroscopic stabilization. Red Aviatrix I'd hate to live inside a dome, an airships sounds much more exciting! But what is a domed flying city but an airship made of glass? (Or cultured reinforced crystal.) Instead of having a tiny porthole to view the sunset from you could stroll down an avenue. That's my main objection to a city surrounded by iron bulkheads. No sky, and most of your light would have to be artificial. It would feel too dreary and oppressive, and the citizens would be depressed all the time.

The view would be nicer, sure, but then I'd much rather live somewhere proper, like a real city ~ not a floating snowglobe waiting to crash.

It's as likely to crash as an airship.

But more likely to crash than a real city.
If you want a nice place to live, find a proper city. If you want adventure, find an airship. A floating snowglobe is no place to find either.

Eh, I think it's a perfect place to find both! And besides, there's bound to be a good deal of adventure in an aircity constantly visited by airships from different lands!
There's something for everyone!

Whatever the Anachronism is, you'll always get tales of adventure from visiting airships.
But if you want real adventure, you've got to be out there! Not stuck in some dome!
And there's hardly something for everyone if they don't like flying.

Ah, but there's always that option to go out there and adventure, besides the opportunities presented in a city! Run off and join a crew, or work as an engineer to keep things running beneath the city, etc!
I just can't understand why you'd want to settle for an airship when you can have a flying city. gonk

Then I'm trying to figure out what exactly is the difference between a flying city in an iron hull and a flying city with a view. Both are equally gigantic. Both would serve as docks for smaller ships. Both would basically be a flying, mobile port town.
The only difference I can see is that one has a hull you can see through and the other doesn't. Why exactly is the one offensive to your sensibilities and yet the other is acceptable?

And what, exactly, would be the best shape for a flying city?
Ship-shaped, that's what.
