You can't soft Red's dad because the game designers don't want you to. Besides, he's been like that for ever, so you would probably have to use every soft and supersoft in every FF game to even halfway cure him.

Demonilith that rocks! I've always wondered about using a soft on RedXIII's dad.... did you notice the spears sticking out of his body? A soft would not have helped.
