Fruits Basket is the best!

www.fruits-basket.com

Tohru discovers the Sohma family's secret, When she promises to keep their secret, the Sohmas allow Tohru to live with them.
The story follows the lives of Tohru and the Sohma family, as they deal with each other and a society where neither quite fits in, as well as the feared Akito Sohma, head of the Sohma family.
...
not the greatest summary

but trust me
ITS GREAT

I highly highly highly recommend CLAMP's xxholic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. Both of them are so bloody awesome!

Both series intersect each other and Tsubasa has one of CLAMP's most famous couple: Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Lee! They're from an alternate universe and are traveling together to find Sakura's lost memories that are in the shape of feathers. Along the way, they pick up some awesome companions, Kurogane and Fay. xd You're just going to heart them after you start reading the series. You get completely hooked and can't wait for each new book to come out...

xxxholic is in modern place Japan and is about a teenager that sees and attracts spirits. He's always having these problems and you get to see some awesome illustrations of spirits (like kitsunes) and mythical beasts!

Both are a must read!

heart CLAMP forever!

Xellina-chan
I guess this is still on topic: A manga I would NOT recomend. I started buying Kare-Kano books a little while back and it moves wayyy too slowly. Save your money and read it in the store. Re-reading it doesn't bring any deep realizations or fun observations. And it's long!

I was almost thinking of buying this sereis (loved the anime) but you're the second person who's claimed it wasn't worth it.

I really recommend "Gokuraku Seishun Hockey Club" (It has barely anything to do with hockey xD)

At first glance, it appears to be an Ouran Host Club ripoff, but I think it's better than OHSHC. It's about this girl who loves sleeping she she makes it into a prestigious high school just so she can get there in 10 minutes; on her way to school one morning--half asleep--she is hit by this rich guy's car, and so as payment (he lies and says there's no insurance) he makes her join the hockey team because they're short on members. A BOYS ONLY hockey club. xD Hilarity ensues.

Title: Othello
Summary:
A girl named Yaya Higuchi has a split personality. Sometimes she turns into a bad girl called Nana-chan. But when she turns back to Yaya she doesn't remember what she did. Even though it was Nana it was actually Yaya's body that Nana uses.

Title: Cyber Idol Mink
Summary:
When Mink rushes to buy the latest CD by her favorite pop star, Illiya, she winds up instead with a software disc from the future that allows her to become whomever she wants. When she and her friends decide to program a Cyber Idol version of herself, all Mink's dreams come true. In fact, she is soon discovered as the next 'It Girl' and causes quite the pop culture sensation. However, Mink cannot reveal her true identity to anyone because using software from the future is a serious crime - and being caught could result in her 'deletion.'

Mermaid Melody Pichi-Pichi Pitch

Luchia, Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean, sets out to land to find the boy she saved from a shipwreck seven years before the beginning of the story, the boy to whom she entrusted her pink pearl. She eventually found the boy: a surfer named Kaito DĹŤmoto. But as the human form Luchia assumed, a girl named Luchia Nanami, bears very little resemblance to her mermaid form, Kaito cannot recognize her. She cannot tell Kaito who she really is; otherwise, according to mermaid folklore, she would turn into foam. So she tries to convince Kaito into figuring out who she really is (since the legend does not say anything about the other person discovering a mermaid's true identity by himself).

At the same time, Luchia has been told that a group of water demons have invaded the marine world and she must gather the six other Mermaid Princesses and their pearls to resurrect the legendary goddess Aqua Regina to stop them. To fulfill this, she joins forces with Hanon and Rina, Mermaid Princesses who came up to dry land, use their pearls, turn into singing idols, and use their voices as an offensive.

Battle Angel Alita

Genre: Punk-Cyber Sci-Fi Aciton

Age: 16+ (It has quite a bit of gory bits and a few sexual references thru out the manga series)

Length: 9 volumes

Doctor Ido is a neuro/android surgeon (aka cyberphysician) in the junk yard. Originally a member belonging to the ELITE society of Tipheras (a floating "heaven/eden" located above the junk yard ), he has since relocated to the junk yard. One day, whilst sorting through the giant junk yard created below Tipheras, he comes across a humanoid bust (therefore a head and shoulder). Although battered and broken, the human brain is still intact and alive. He manages to revive it and gives her the name Alita (after his recently dead cat).

Upon awakening can't even remember her name! Her past in clouded in mystery, she starts a life alongside Ido. Certain events unfold during the first manga bringing to light Ido's secret job. As a result Alita experiences flash back's of her past.

Thus starting Alita on her journey to discover her clouded past as well as the secret technique that is the Punzer Kunst!!!

There's a second series titled Battle Angel Alita: Last Order (still ongoing at 9vols) that's basically a "what if?" scenario that happens between teh first series Vol. 7-9 wink

Anyone who enjoyed the series Dark Angel (by Joss Whedon) ... (but the first series) will enjoy battle Angel Alita wink

Lotsa kick-butt fun and awesome characters as well as stunning artwork biggrin

These are just a few that I really like:

Beauty Pop
13+
Kiri's friend Kanako gives a present to one of the members of the Scissors Project. Her act of kindness is interpreted as a bribe to get a makeover, and they reject her out of hand for being too ugly. Kiri decides to help Kanako and give the boys a lesson in what true beauty is.

Chibi Vampire
16+
Karin is a cute little girl who also happens to be a vampire...with a twist. Once a month, she experiences intense bleeding from her nose-we're talking gushers! In other words, she's a vamp with blood to spare, so rather than stealing blood from humans she actually gives her blood to them. If done right, this can be an extremely positive experience that benefits the "victim" as much as the vampire. The problem is that Karin never seems to do things right!

Boys Over Flowers
not sure, maybe 15+
Tsukushi Makino is accepted into the prestigious, Eitoku Academy. Life changes dramatically for Tsukushi when her friend falls on Tsukasa Domyoji. Tsukasa is the explosive leader of the "F4", a group of the most powerful, rich and handsome boys. Domyoji refuses to accept Makiko's apology and Tsukushi steps in to protect her friend. A red tag appears in the Tsukushi's locker the next morning which is a sign from the F4 that she is to be bullied by the school. Tskushi continues to stand up to her oppressors.

This one has not come out yet but I read the first chapter in SB and it was good.
Fall In Love Like a Comic
15+
Rena Sakura is a high school student with a secret: she's a professional manga artist. And although she's never been on a date, that doesn't stop her from drawing steamy shojo scenes for Chaomi magazine. But when the gorgeous Okita finds out her secret, she finds herself asking him out to get some real-life experience in love!

Samurai Deeper Kyo
16+
It is 1604, four years after the Battle of Sekigahara, Japan's greatest civil war. Yuya Shiina, a beautiful bounty hunter, mistakes a traveling medicine seller, Mibu Kyoshiro, for the legendary wanted man "Dernon Eyes Kyo." As they travel together, Yuya enlists Kyoshiro's aid in capturing a gang of wanted criminals. When Kyoshiro is cornered and beaten senseless by the criminals, his eyes turn blood red. The peaceful Kyoshiro draws his sword and transforms into Demon Eyes Kyo, the legendary killer of a thousand men. Kyoshiro and Kyo: Two vastly different spirits inhabiting one body.

Sanctuary

by Sho Fujimura (script) and Ryoichi Ikegami (art)

Rating: 16+
Category: Political, Drama
Year: 1990

The story is about an yakuza called Hojo, who makes an alliance with a young secretary called Asami to substitute all the old men for young men on Senate and change the 'putrefying Japan' they know.

Very interesting, and absolutely one of my favorites. The lineart is realistic and detailed. The story is contemporaneous and freaking real o_o'
And I must admit Hojo is very handsome ;D for you girls (n some guys too).

I couldn't think of any "new" series since everything we're getting been over in Japan for a while. So I thought I'd go with geeky mangas:

Genshiken: 9 volumes altogether, about a college club who generalizes in manga, anime, figures, cosplay. rated Older Teen

I, Otaku, Struggles in Akihabara: just 1 vol in the US but about a guy who stumbles across a new anime shop and the adventures from there. rated Teen
