Hoshi nodded slowly, closing his hand gently around his son's. "What did you think you would say?" he asked curiously, as much because he wanted to know more of Sei as because he was simply wondering.

He didn't want to push Sei, but the fact that he'd already welcomed Hoshi back into his life, however hesitantly, gave Hoshi hope that perhaps the two of them could yet find a common ground beyond genetics.

He did not mind. After all, it much easier for him to let his father take control as far as physical touch went than to have him guess-work it - objects were one thing, he could not harm objects by miscalculating how much pressure he was applying... and thankfully, he lacked the sheer physical strength to break most things that way. Persons and animals, however... he'd accidentally hurt his fair share, especially his guardian right after she became more human than robot. That wouldn't make a very good first impression.

"It's kind of silly and hard to explain... All short of things, I guess ?" He offered as an explaination, even if it wasn't really a very good one. "Also of 'what ifs' and 'what is he like', you know ?"

Hoshi held Sei's hand for a moment, just long enough to reinforce the thought that he was happy to be talking to his son. It wasn't precisely a handshake, but it was close. There just seemed no point to the actual up and down motion of the shake itself, and Hoshi's thoughts were elsewhere.

"I spent what time I was aware wondering about you," he nodded instead, finally releasing Sei's hand and folding his own in his lap. "Wondering what you were like... how old you were... how long I'd been away." He paused, then added quietly, "Whether you were angry at how long I've been away, too."

"I... don't think I was ever angry about it." Frustrated, perhaps, and even that had not been directly at his father but more-so at... circupstances. "Zero told me there was most likely to be something that kept you away. She seemed so certain of it..." And turn out, by all apparences, his guardian had been right. Like she tended to be about many things.

"You've grown into quite a man," Hoshi said after a moment, pride in his eyes. Settling back in his chair, he tilted his head at Sei. "Will you tell me more of your life with Zero? Do you get along with her well?" He sounded so nosy, Hoshi thought to himself. But... how else was he to draw Sei out, find out exactly what the boy was thinking?

And Hoshi's plan, it seemed, was working very well. "She's a little... special, I guess. No duh. He had seen her, after all ! The cyborg had always been excentric, and now that she's discovered apparence-altering magic... yes. "But she's very nice and caring... in spite of apparences. She does graphic design and works from home." That was not exactly the truth - Zero did graphic design, of course, but it mostly was a front for her services as a hacker, though... he figured this would not quite fly so well. "She's got quite a few kids to care for, but most of them moved out." In fact, the notion had been tugging at his mind ever since he finally found a stable source of income, but... not yet. He could be patient.

That, and he didn't expecially want to move out -alone-.

"Thinking of following their lead?" Hoshi asked, quirking a smile. It felt a little like Sei was beginning to open up to him, and that was a wonderful feeling indeed. "Or is it not quite the right time for that yet?" Hoshi found himself wondering whether he sounded as paternal as he felt in that moment.

"Not quite yet, but... soon. If that makes any sense. Nothing against her at all, but... well, you know ? I've got to do it someday." Zero missed most of her children dearly, but he could also see that she enjoyed regaining her freedom, little by little - it seemed a good thing for the both of them, though he could not imagine not keeping in touch with the woman that had stuck by his side for the last four years, and had been more of a mother to him than his birth mother had ever managed to be.

"Might want to think about a new bike first." The one he had... had seen better days. It was the one he had been using as a child, and the seat only came so far up.

"When you know the time is right, you'll be ready to go," Hoshi said, easing his thumb over the back of his hand. He opened his mouth to say more, then shut it when one of the zurui kits tumbled ears over tail against his heel. Blinking, he looked down, then reached to pick up the fluffy kit, petting it as it made itself right at home in his lap.

"I think for the moment, I'll be remaining at Mireille's place. She's been very insistent that her extra room could stand a warm body in it."

"Yep. Sounds like they fell down from the same tree." Sei said, an amused smirk on his face. Zero was much the same, and perhaps this was a part of why the two women got along. "Hopefully she can cook, unlike Zero." The smirk remained, showing he was more amused than irritated, thankfully so as otherwise his voice had remained somewhat flat. He still forgot to try and push emotion in it sometimes.

"I don't really know," Hoshi chuckled. Did he know how to cook, for that matter? He wasn't really sure. "I suppose I'll find out tonight, if nothing else. Do you cook at home, then?" he asked, fingers playing over the dark fur of the kit in his lap. He looked down at it, watching the way the fur smoothed under his hand, and felt a flash of memory slip through him.

He reached up, grabbing one of the stars that formed his halo and pulling it free. Tearing it in half, he handed one away even as he put the other back, and both grew into full-sized stars.

So there were some things he remembered, at least...

"Sometimes. I am... not especially skilled at it either." He admitted, looking and sounding vaguely embarrassed about the fact. He outdid his guardians in a few fields, but cooking was not one of them. "Pretty sure I've burnt water once."

Hoshi laughed at the words. "Only once, though, right?" he asked, looking up at Zero. His fingertips tingled a bit as he scritched the fur over the zurui's forehead, and he looked down, wondering whether a bit of static electricity had built up. Instead, he saw a small star on the dark fur, the mark glowing faintly against his fingertips.

...Had that been there before?

Sei had been about to answer, but the sudden look of confusion on his father's face made him peek in that direction, his previous comeback forgotten.

What was going on ?

Hoshi looked up at the silence, then smiled, looking down wryly at the kit in his lap. "I only noticed just now how appropriate the markings on his fur were." Well, one marking anyway, he thought to himself as he tapped the glowing star very lightly.

The kit, seeming to cooperate for the moment, remained still but for its head, which turned toward Sei so that Sei could easily see the star.
