Can't say about burying it but yes the purpose of fruit was to prevent scurvy and Rum was important because after a short time out sea the barreled water sailors would bring with them would become infested with insect larva and begin turning green where as the alcohol in the rum prevented any such contamination and at the same time a drunk pirate a braver fighter and was less aware of the harsh conditions on a ship.

Why thank you. If you are interested here are some interesting notes
Pirates favorite tactics included stealth comparable to that of any real life ninja. Pirates would intercept the coordinates of where ships would be passing in the middle of the night. Dousing the ships lamps they would lie in wait springing an ambush. By the time anyone on the ship realized what was happening they were over run.
The other tactic was terror. Everything from stripping naked and waving their swords as they boarded a ship presenting themselves as wild men. Blackbeard tactic of running fuses through his beard causing smoke to pour from his facial hair on top of the 8 pistols and 2 swords strapped to his body.
Blackbeard payed special mind to ships that had sailed out of Boston. After a storm killed his good friend Black Sam Bellamy one of the greatest pirates of the 1700s and his surviving crew was captured and hanged Blackbeard declared revenge doing everything in his power to cripple English commerce creating a blockade outside the Carolinas and had his crew burn any ship they raided that sailed out of Boston.
Sam Bellamy and his crew referred to themselves as Robin Hoods Men. Treating Captives very well by comparison to what they may have been accustomed. as a result men jumped at the opportunity to join his crew including the 9 year old John King
Julius Cesar himself was captured by Pirates and upon escaping had the pirates captured and crucified every single one of them.
King Charles II of England himself had lived briefly as a Pirate and would come to use their services during his reign.
Blackbeard's true name is unknown even the name Edward Teach "Thatch" is believed to be an Alias.
Pirates envisioned and personified the winds as demigods and demons.
Pirates were fairly compensated for any serious injury to occur during battle and were rewarded for acts of heroism.
Pirates especially during the days of men like Henry Morgan often Carried better Firearms than those carried by the Spanish Ships and Colonies they attacked spending their plunder and pocket money to obtain french made muskets.
The female Pirate Anne Bonnie's last words to her lover Captain Calico Jack Rokham as he was walked to the Gallows were "Had you been more of a man you would not be here now"
Pirate lore was not born after the fact in later centuries but was born by poor men and women idolizing the buccaneers who had down something about the impoverished state they had been born into.
Native tribes in the Americas viewed pirates as their allies seeing as they were enemies of the European governments who oppressed them whether it be the Spanish or English
Eye Patches were used not for medical reasons always but as a tool in battle. if a fight was taken bellow deck the Pirates would have one eye already used to the dark allowing the pirate to see and kill his opponent before his opponents eyes ever adjusted to the dark.
Pirates did not keep parrots and monkeys as companions but rather traded them as exotic animals would bring in a high price.
There were several different types of cannon balls including the dreaded grapeshot and chain shot. A grapeshot was a wooden ball filled with tiny metal balls. upon the cannon being fired the wood would decintegrate and a spray of metal would unleash from the barrel slaughtering everything. A chainshot was two cannonballs attached by a chain that once fired would tear down the masts of ships and maim anyone and anything in its path.
A Spanish Piece of Eight in the 1600s by today's standards was worth $51.00
In a single raid a pirate could earn himself more than a hard working Englishman would make in several years of honest labor even skilled craftsmen. They were also notorious for blowing their small fortunes on women and liquor within weeks.

Yup, I've heard of a number of these things. Mythbusters even did the thing with eye patches. The fear tactic always reminds me of how Genghis Khan would send scout in to spread rumors and fear about him so that when he did come most of the town would flee

I am looking for this book. it was written in 1724 and many attribute its writing to Daniel Defoe though there is evidence against his writing of it. Either way every story we know about pirates today stems from this book Every book i have read thus far has turned to this Book for reference.

whats cool is the author of the first book i read Colin Woodard, apparently uncovered some old documents that were lost to public records that revealed more about Edward Teach (Blackbeard) than had ever been previously known so his book the Republic of Pirates gives a very in depth and accurate look at Blackbeard's life and career. Everything from where he was in his early life. his motives the assembling of his fleet his disposal of his Flag ship and his death. His book dispels rumors and reinforces fact. Clearing Blackbeard's names of certain crimes but revealing the details of ones he did commit.
I have actually communicated with Colin Woodard through Email.
