Vaythel couldn't help but smile as the Akhal Tekhe egg burst open, spilling its dragonet on the Sands. He couldn't see what color it was just yet, as it was hidden under various fragments of shell. Vaythel was tempted to go over and remove the shards, but to do so was almost certain death from the claws of Cheoth. He was excited as to see what was in it--he had guessed a Bronze--but either way, it would be something. This Hatching was going to be spectacular, Vaythel prophesied, ending up with a picture of -him- Impressing a Bronze that he dispelled with a chuckle. That would be lucky, but he would be happy with whatever he got.

It was happening. NOW. Despite all her on-the-fence thoughts, Kella once more found herself out on the Sands. Shards, its hot, she thought as she shifted her weight from foot to foot. The heat never got old. She had never gotten used to it, despite being out here several times. The lanky- dark-skinned girl waited with feigned patience. Pfffbt, she had all day! She'd much rather stand her on the sands, sweltering and sweating her buns off, then running around doing the odd-man jobs in the kitchens. Ew. Her palms were sweating. Gross! Kella wiped them on her white robe- and her hands tightened into fists, clutching the thin fabric as the eggs began to rock, shimmy, and shake.
This was it. They were hatching! Would it happen this time? Kella's throat tightened; she forced herself to take a deep breath and relax. It certainly wouldn't happen if the dragonets could sense her uneasiness. That would drive them away, if anything at all. She stood alone on the sands, slightly away from the main line of candidates. By slightly away, Kella was only a few footsteps away. Not very far at all. But she spoke to no one, and had eyes for only the eggs. Besides. She wasn't very friendly with any of her fellow candidates. What would she say? The fact that the young woman had no one for support made her all the more nervous and uncomfortable.
The queen egg was the first to show signs of hatching. "Oh, Faranth," Kella groaned, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. She had to calm herself! She forced her eyes back open and stared at the queen egg for a few moments. She stared for so long that she missed the Akhal Teke egg splitting- but she noticed it quickly after. Her attention turned away from the Nightmare egg, Kella waited for the first hatching to show itself.

Such excitement, already! Jisken watched, his eyes glued to the first egg to crumble on the Sands. Being one of the taller males in the group, he stood further back, easily getting a view, but a mild curiosity to see what lay hidden in the scattered eggshells made him edge his way forward, on the balls of his feet to try and crane and see further. No, he wouldn't go so far as to actually approach the young dragonet--that would surely get him mauled--but he couldn't help wanting to get a little closer. After all, the way this Hatching started, it was sure to be interesting throughout.

Kyllae anxiously leaned over, trying to get a better view of the eggs. Good for the Akhal Teke egg! Hatching before its sibling...it had spunk, Kyllae liked that. Not that she had any hope for that egg in particular, seeing as it was most likely a brown or a bronze...
She chewed her lips, eyes round with anxiety and curiosity. If she'd injured any of the dragonets...she'd never hear the end of it. And she knew it. Please be all right. She hoped fervently that everything would go fine. No maulings, no disasters, just a good, nice hatching.
Of course, it would be even better if she impressed, but...she wouldn't stress too much about that right now. All she could do was keep an open mind, send the dragonets her love, and hope one of them found itself looking towards the stands.

"Not really, Xer. The queen egg is cracking, but I think another one just hatched. I can't quite tell, because it is covered in egg shell." Vera, of course, was absolutely fascinated by the little beasties. As there was no way that she was going to meet a hatching dragonet up close, she felt free to observe them from where she sat. ... It was a little bit irritating that there were so many tall people sitting in front of her, though. She couldn't make out everything that happened unless she stood up-- which, naturally, would get in the way of the people behind her. Shardit. "See? I think it's maybe a Bronze or a Brown under there. Hard to say for sure."
--
"Hello," S'van said, scooting over to Vera's other side to make room for the Journeyman Harper. "You're just in time, really." Which was probably a good thing. He had a fair idea that Vera had been panicking a little, though he wasn't quite sure why. Perhaps she, like Mal, believed that there would be maulings this time around? Maybe she didn't want to miss whatever went on so that she could write a song. ... But she was right there, so that didn't make any sense, did it? He shook his head, bewildered by her behavior.

Vaythel's smile faded as he spotted Kella in the female lines, a blush quickly replacing it. Oh dear. I hope I don't trip her. the Candidate thought abashedly, coming very close to shuffling a foot in the Sands like a wayward child being lectured. He turned back towards the eggs once more, the blush still clouding his face like some kind of irritating mist that refused to go away. He hadn't known that Kella was a Candidate, but now that he did, he gulped, having seen her temper in action--and directed at him. Though I really should give her a bit of a chance, as it was my fault... Vaythel thought with a mental shrug, letting it trail off into oblivion. What he should be doing was watching the eggs to see what else would hatch, all the while keeping an eye on the dragonet under the shards of the Akhal Tekhe egg. It was, after all, the one that had caught him at the start of the Hatching. Maybe the little dragonet would come to him? Shards, that would make the rest of his life. He did have to keep the thought that maybe he would be left standing again, but that one was stifled under the layers of hope that Vaythel had reinforced.

Attention now split between the cracked queen egg, and what had been a very violent shell-breaking entrance by the other, still hidden dragonet, Nathail rocks back and forth on his feet just a bit. That first entrance was definitely violent, hopefully whatever color the dragon inside wouldn't be one aiming for a mauling at anyone in its way. Just in case, he braces himself to be ready to move out of the way of any claws and tail lashing.
Alirien keeps glancing towards the queen egg to see if it will keep up with the ruder hatchling stealing her spotlight and Impress to Hers. Of course, curiosity for if the hatched, but hidden dragonet from the other egg might be aiming for the boys keeps his attention darting back over for any sign of movement. Maybe such a rushed escape from the shell tired it out though?

It was the same as last time, and the time before. There he stood, none different among the other robed candidates. It was a wonder he hadn't become totally disenchanted with hatchings, this being his third, but he was less anxious. Only a tad less hopeful, though no one would hear him say so. There seemed to be more eggs at this one than the last and, where he would have been even less cheery if it were the same as the last, it did help to bolster his mood into to a harsh positive. If he hadn't cared he'd be standing there with an annoyed look plastered upon his face, tapping his foot impatiently.
In actuality he stood there just like last time, shifting his feet so much he began to make himself a crater in the warm sands of the hatching ground. Tideal looked at his feet and kicked the sand a bit. He returned his gaze to its proper place, resting his eyes upon the egg that had just shook. He snickered a little that that one managed its way out before the queen. Audacious of the little dragonet. He itched to step closer to the front, suddenly disliking the spot he created for himself and wanting to truly make a stand this time. He may as well be named vetran of failure, but he was not yet one to give up hope so easily. Pushing a little he came to the front of the crowd of candidates. It was a nicer view.

N'tos had been sleeping against his dragon, both of them having fallen asleep at one point. Papers with blueprints, and parts laid scattered around them, evidently showing that the young male had been trying to tinker with something.
That was the way it was, until Cheoth's roar reached even Asceth's place, rumbling beneath his feet. The dragon wasted no time in standing up, catching N'tos with the length of his neck when the younger boy nearly toppled over from the startling action. "What is it?" N'tos asked, his golden eues gleaming, as he looked, not quite upright, over to his brown, Asceth. "The hatching begins." The brown quickly responded, walking with his bonded. "Ah, that time, huh?" He scratched his head, thinking of the previous events at his hatching. That was hectic, to say the least.
Both of them took a seat far behind the crowds of the candidates, N'tos absent-mindedly scratching Asceth's eyeridges. Do you mind? N'tos asked Asceth, who replied Not at all. If you do not like crowds, neither do I. It was a good thing that both of them had great eyesight, at least able to see the events that were happening.
"The nightmare and akhal Teke has hatched." N'tos voiced outloud, to which his dragon nodded to. "A little queen, and probably a brown or a bronze?" N'tos was echoing the thoughts of the crowd, leaning back. I hope that they will be able to find their person, as I did. N'tos affectionately patted the brown. "There's over 60 candidates.. I can't imagine they won't."

Ollen was just settling into her room and getting her little Firelizard tosleep where designated with the little beast began to hum with the rest of the Weyr. The tall candidate had been told during lessons this was it, this was the start of the hatching! Shucking her clothes she pulled on her white robes and filed into the halls like the other Candidates taking her turn to get to the hot sands.
Remember what La said, positive thoughts, stand still, do not touch a dragon that is not yours. She used these words as a mantra as she tried not to tense at the hatching eggs. The queen was hatching and she knew that a gold would never be for her. Still interested in what would come out of the egg her eyes lingered on the spidering cracks in the shell.
The large egg near the Queen had begun to hatch and she drifted her attention to them. Positive thoughts, stand still, do not touch a dragon. La's words the other night were a reassurance and she felt ready for this event, her first hatching.

A certain buzzing had taken hold of the Weyr, but it wasn’t just coming from the dragons no… possibly above the intoning of the great beasts was that of naked feet slapping against stone and squeals of the female variety. Turning under her thin sheet, Weiwin just wanted to ignore the ruckus. It was much too early to be awake, even for her. No, no she would just ignore the girls and their queer fancies… “Hey!” A pair of sandals landed on her head. “It’s Hatching time!” was the only answer/apology she got as she twisted up out of bed.
As she jogged her way to the Hatching Grounds, Weiwin wasn’t checking her robes or double checking the soles of her shoes, no, she was tuned in to all of the fanfare. Her crisp green eyes raced from one side of the grounds to the other. Privately she was angered by the fact that they hadn’t had the chance to touch the eggs this time around, so when she got close enough to see the eggs she just couldn’t seem to look away. She was just barely able to pull off a bow to the mother before hustling on to a spot with a view of the eggs. In order to have such a view, Weiwin had to separate herself from the others not that that bothered her much. Unfortunately, though her location on the sands left her farther away from the eggs than she would have liked. Her eyes moved from the American Paint egg when the Nightmare egg started to crack.

The Nightmare, of course, was not about to be outdone. No sooner did the Akhal Teke burst from his egg did the Queen break her own shell, screaming (or rather, squeaking) as fiercely as a newborn dragon could. She was certainly Cheoth’s daughter, K’em thought wryly. Of course, the large Queen would have it no other way. It was clear it was all Favan could do to keep the bulky gold calm, but if a Queen could breath fire, K’em was certain all the candidates standing on the sands would have been charred to little bits.
The Akhal Teke surged forward, shaking little bits of shell off. The crowd gasped in awe. He was brown! Possibly the biggest dragon in the clutch, though none could be sure judging solely on egg size, but the dappled dragon was absolutely enormous. He was also very clearly unhappy. The brown dove towards his candidates, uncaring as he pushed by two boys only to be confronted with a third. The Akhal Teke growled, slashing at the unfortunate lad and shied away, leaving Goran with a nice, deep set of claw marks down both his legs.
Eyes whirling red, the brown was about to continue when a scream caught his attention.
The young Queen was barreling her way through the females, wings aflare and teeth agape as she pushed her way through the crowd violently. She could not find Hers, and she was not impressed. Neither, did it seem, was the brown. His tail lashed as he stared angrily, completely unaware he had just knocked a boy off his feet, and whirled around. Of course, the Akhal Teke promptly tripped. The boy on the ground remained relatively unharmed, but the dragon caught both Mal and Jisken with flailing limbs as he fell. The wounds were not grave, but they were certainly painful.
((Just a note; mauled Candidates ARE allowed to remain on the sands. <3))

With a yelp, Rinfala leapt out of the way as the young Queen came barreling past her, grabbing at Kesslan in an attempt to pull her friend out of harm's way. If there was ever a time to be glad she'd chosen to stand at the side of the pack instead of the front, now was it. "Try not to maul Yours, will you?" she muttered after the Queen's golden tail, hoping she'd stay in one piece long enough to find if any of the hatchlings were hers to Impress.

"MAL!" S'van got up from his seat and strove to get down to his friend's side. Vera, of course, was having none of that. "Stay put, S'van," she hissed, holding onto the stronger, larger brownrider. "I said stay put!" He dragged her along with him several rows before he came to a stop, and seemed to come to his senses. Helplessly he watched as the little Brown kept the boys at his mercy. "Back up in your seat." He wouldn't budge, not for a moment. "S'van I said to get back in your seat!" the diminutive Harper commanded. She was sure as Shells not going to give poor Xeran a heart attack now.

Denik had just barely made it onto the sands before the first egg cracked. They all seemed to be impatient to be born. After all, the candidates hadn't even had time for a Touching!
The boy brushed his hair out of his eyes. He considered for a moment that his hair might need to get cut, but quickly turned his attention back to the eggs. From his position, he could barely see the tail of the newly hatched dragon.
Which egg was that? Oh I wish I could have seen! Denik whispered to the taller candidate near him. "Can you see which one just hatched? Was it the queen? I heard that egg was shaking."
By then he could hear yells and angry dragons. Oh no...
