When Fish Bones stopped to pick at the rock, the doe continued to scratch out the path for the water, but when he goes to look for something else, she stops to figure out what he is doing. He's looking for something... She wanders over to see what it was. A large rock. She nods, more to herself than anything, and goes back to working on her section.

Finding a rock of suitable size, Fish Bones almost picks it up, then thinks better of it. After all, who wants a mouthful of dirt? Instead he gives it a few good kicks, each one aiming it to where he'd left of digging. His last kick is actually just a nudge to get it into the ditch. Placing his hoof on the rock, he pushes it down a bit, then goes to get another stick. Holding the stick at one end, Fish Bones wedges it under the big rock, but with the little rock under it. Carefully, he pushes down on the stick, watching as the bigger rock starts to budge. As the rock is lifted, he carefully slides the stick under it a bit more. When the stick has slid under an inch or two, Fish Bones stops pushing on it and walks over to the rock. Again he tries to roll it, and this time it moves, up and out of the ditch it goes, to settle at the edge. Fish Bones gives it another two rolls, not wanting it to block the ditch should the edges crumble.

Satisfied, he starts back to digging out the trench. He uses the stick to scrape away dirt, sometimes sticking it into the ground near the edge and levering a chunk of dirt away. Now and then he stops and uses his front hooves to dig out the loosened dirt chunks.

After having scratched out a good portion of the distance they had to go, she drops the stick she had been using and takes her hooves to it. It was slowly, progressively becoming a small trench. She dug her hooves in without mercy. She wasn't one to worry about getting dirty. In fact, the more dirt covered she became in such a process, would only mean that she had worked that much harder.

When she finished that section, she stopped to look at it, then looked over at Fish Bones to check on his progress. Deciding it was time for a drink, she takes the few strides over to the stream and lowers her head down to take a drink.

Seeing Cold-Blood dig into the earth with her hooves, Fish Bones decides that's a better idea then the stick. Before he follows her example, though, he uses his stick to loosen the dirt in a stretch of ditch. Dropping the stick, he starts at one end, making sure to face toward the already cleared out area so dirt will not be piled where he just excavated.

After digging out his area, he joins Cold-Blood at the water's edge, bending down to fill his mouth with the cool liquid. After several gulps, he lifts his head, turning to survey the area. "Wow, nearly done." Fish Bones turns his head, beaming at Cold-Blood. "Thank you, not just for the physical labor, but for the idea." As simple an idea as it is, he hadn't thought of it. Neither had Golden-Spider, the buck who'd helped to build up the pond's sides.

She gulps water down until her thirst is quenched, and only then does she raise her head once more. Water dripping from her muzzle, the doe looks at Fish Bones as he speaks to her. Her eyes shut once and open, a slow blink, before she replies, "You're welcome, Fish Bones. A little work never hurt anyone. And things get done faster when you do them with a friend." She thought of him as a friend, anyways. Not that she ever really got close to anyone, not really anyways. She wasn't one to have large groups of friends, but one or two couldn't hurt, right?

"Let's finish up this last stretch," She begins to walk down to the last little bit of trench that needs to be dug out, "And once this is done, we can go back up to the stream and let the water in," She picks up a particularly sturdy stick and scratches at the earth once, then kicks some dirt out with a hoof. Alternating these two movements, there is little left to do, and they do, indeed, come very close to finishing.

Grabbing up another stick, Fish Bones heads to where he'd left off, digging in with renewed vigor. In what feels like no time, he's connected his end of the trench with the new bit she'd been working on. He makes sure the dirt is cleared away, then heads down to his outer pond edge. Finding the spot where the trench will meet the edge, Fish Bones loosens a rock, taking care not to topple the whole section of built up edging. He simply lets the rock roll down the slight incline, seeing no reason to try and roll it out of the way. Starting from this gap, he starts pushing dirt out of the way. Before long, though, he completely abandons the stick, using just his hooves to dig. Now and then, he looks up, amazed by how quickly his and Cold-Blood's ends are drawing together.

A few more minutes of digging pass by. Dirt flies away from the trench, as hooves fly into it. It would almost be worthy of a little music relay of these movements. Just a few more feet, just a few more inches, and then there it is!

Her foot nudges his as they finally link both sections together, and she freezes. Her head comes up and her eyes flick up to his, as her mind is working furiously trying to gauge a reaction or at least make her move in response. Her muzzle gravitates a little closer to his without any concious thoughts behind it, and she is caught in the moment.

The unexpected contact with Cold-Blood sends a little start up his leg, though not in an unpleasant manner. Returning her gaze, and hoping he's reading her right, Fish Bones leans down a bit to nuzzle her. His nostrils flare as he takes in her scent, mixed with the smell of newly dug earth. He rubs his snout against her's, little points of electricity shooting along his skin where it meets hers.

She watches the buck as he reacts, and she is helpless to stop it. A burning sensation builds up inside of her, but that burst of anger dies in the instant they touch. He nuzzles her, and her eyes drift lazily shut. Her whole body relaxes, even though she had not even noticed she was tense in the first place. She also breathes deep, taking in the buck's scent, content. Finally, she is able to move once more. Returning the affection, she whispers, "All that's missing... is..." pausing here, her eyes open slowly and take on good look into his, wanting to remember them, before finishing her sentence with, "water." On this last word, she breaks contact, though rather reluctantly.

Bending her foreleg to kick out that last piece of dirt that had lay beneath her hoof, a smile crawls across Cold-Blood's features.

Fish Bones smiles when she returns the nuzzle. He keeps eye contact with her as she speaks, her words and movement pulling him back into the task at hand. "Y-yes, water.. because, because we're done.. with the trench." He blushes, not used to stuttering and stumbling over his words.

With a sigh, he heads up to the stream, ready to dig out the last bit. I wonder if Cold-Blood will come around.. Or if this was just a chance meeting.. Hoping that she will visit, and or allow him to visit her, Fish Bones starts to dig out the last bit of trench. Breaking through to the stream, he watches water pour into the tunnel. "Can you see the water yet?" He shouts to Cold-Blood.

Cold-Blood knew she would be stumbling over her words, too, had she been speaking any. Rather glad that she wasn't she nods to re-affirm the project's completion. All that was left, was water. She can't help but stare at the buck as he makes his way up to the stream. Cold-Blood shakes her head, trying to get the dizzying happy out of her mind. He calls out to her, and so she focuses back in on the task at hoof. Water. Right!

Looking down at her hooves, there is no water yet, but as her gaze follows the trench up she sees the flume coming toward her. She watched it until it hit the bottom of Fish Bones' pond, and only then did she yell back, "Yeah! It's making it's way into the pond! Come see!" She figured he should see his pond being filled with water for the first time. Perhaps he would even stand right next to her and they could watch it together. She didn't have anywhere to go, for a time yet, and she liked the time spent with Fish Bones.

Hearing Cold-Blood's response, Fish Bones nods, an automatic response as there's no one close enough to see. He hurries back down, stopping only when the pond is in sight. He watches for a full minute, before moving to stand beside her. He doesn't say anything, just stands there, enjoying watching the fruits of their labor next to her.

She sidles a little closer to the buck and says softly, "It's beautiful. Look at it tumble and trickle into your pond. A cascade of millions of water droplets, all rushing together, because of us. It's beautiful."

And there was really nothing else to say, so she went quiet, for even this was enough for Cold-Blood. She would wait the water out, and once the pond was full, she would help dam the trench, and mumble a good-bye, perhaps even a promise of return. Because she would visit again. She would need some time to think things over, but she would like to see Fish Bones again. But it was beginning to get late, and she had to get back to her den. At least, when the water was done, anyway.
