Laures watched his companion as she took off and explored each and every nook she could find, enjoying the almost foal-like glee she exhibited. He couldn't help but chuckle silently to himself. For all of her maturity and at times overly adult behavior, there was an innocent personality just waiting for a chance to escape and be free. He enjoyed that almost as much as he did the sight of the wonders around them.

Taking advantage of his wings and the inherent ability of flutters to change size, he took off and explored where Selena couldn't reach. Flying into the spaces that very few would probably ever see. Grass green eyes widened as he caught sight of the most beautiful shiny rock he had ever seen. Though it was rough and jagged, shaped by wind and sand and time, the small stone reminded him of solid moonlight. Carefully he extended his muzzle and delicately grasped an edge with his lips. This place was too small for even him to stay long, but he just had to have that stone. Pulling it free, he dislodged several larger stones, unbeknownst to him, and as he made his way clear, almost to the opening of this gap, one came loose and fell, its weight and gravity conspiring to send it rushing past his fragile wing, tearing the membrane and twisting it, making it almost completely useless.

He couldn't help but scream as searing pain made itself known. He made it out of the gap, luckily, before falling to the floor of the cave, the stone tumbling ahead. As his body made itself aquainted with the hard floor below, he blacked out.

Selena was completely engrossed with her discovers. The wonder of the cave made her eyes wide and her legs ever in motion. She was everywhere at once. In the caves, in the cracks, in the hole, on the ledge, near the wall, everywhere.
But she knew that Laures was behind her, and she assumed he, too, would begin exploring the beauty and treasure of the cave soon enough. And once she heard the flutter of butterfly wings, her assumption was confirmed. She smiled, and ran off to the other wall of ice and beauty.

Sel trotted briskly over to a large, smooth column and observed it from every side and angle. Suddenly, a small crack at the base caught her eye. She lowered herself and lay on her belly to insect it. She cocked her head to the right, looking it. A sparkle of purple welcomed her. Her instincts and thief-like nature told to her to get it out and see the treasure. A mischievous grin came onto her face, and her eyes narrowed.

She used the sharp edge of her white hoof to widen the crack into a small hole. The purple object seemed even bigger, and even more a treasure. Its value was obvious to anyone. Her smile grew. She used her hoof once more to pry the hole even more. Soon, an opening the size of a small apple had formed, and she could see the gem very well. Her eyes hungered for it. She was so close, she only needed to reach in...

She wiggled her body even closer, smoothing herself out and stretching her neck, flattening her ears. She slowly pushed her nose into the opening. The stone made her nose tickle as the delicate hairs touched it. And as soon as she was close enough to it, she slowly began to open her mouth, and with perfect precision and insight. She clamped her teeth down on it. Keeping it firmly in place. As soon as her teeth touched the rock, the ground shook. Her eyes shot open in horror, her ears flicked towards the noise, and her head came smoothly out of the hole. What she saw to be the cause of the shaking stole her breathe and made her choke.

"Laures!" She screamed and stumbled upon her feet and rushed over, slipping on the icy floor. But she reached him quickly.
"Laures!" She said once more, her voice less hysteric. One thing she was good at, was never letting her head cloud with emotions. It was always clear, and it always had a set of plans ready. She calmed herself down some more.
He is breathing, I can hear his heart beat, his wing is badly damaged, his head is not bleeding, untangle his legs, place the head upwards, check the breathing again, find water, that wing..., Check for any other injuries, place my wet handkerchief on his head, that wing is completely destroyed...will it heal? check breathing again, check for any response, that wing...Laures...
After she had done all this, she couldn't help but cringe at the sight of his once majestic wing, now in shreds. She had no idea what to do. 'Laures?' She whispered into his left ear.

Blessed oblivion overtook him, and Laures was unable to witness the distress he'd caused his companion. A distress he would feel obliged to redress as soon as he realised its existence. But as it was he floated numbly in comforting darkness, his usually busy mind still for once. There was no pain, no fear, nothing. It was peaceful in this place and if he were able to tell, Laures would likely never want to leave.

Awareness came not slowly, to allow him to adjust from the wonderful numbness of unconciousness to the agony and excruciating pain that awaited him. He was first aware of 'Lena leaning over him, her mane tickling the side of his face as she checked his breathing. He started to move laying like this on the rocky ground just wasn't all that comfortable.

Stars burst behind his eyes and he almost blacked out again as agony assualted his every nerve. But he wouldn't cry out, for that would be to show weakness, and weakness was unacceptable, even in the worthless unwanted ones of his bloodline. He took a deep breath and counted slowly, waiting until he was certain he wouldn't disgrace himself and cry, and slowly got up unsteadily to his feet.

Hooves and legs holding steady underneath him, Laures turned to thank the mare for her assistance. But as he opened his mouth to say the words, he caught sight of his nearly ruined wing for the first time. His mouth opened and shut as he stared dumbly. This just wasn't possible. How could this have happened? And more importantly, would he ever be able to fly again?

Shaky breaths as he slowly calmed himself. His own mother had had a bad wing injury once, perhaps not as bad as this, but her wing as he'd remembered was perfect, unblemished and she was able to fly, albeit not as well as she once had, but still, she wasn't denied the sky. This remembered, he was determined the same would be true of him.

"I thank you for your help and kindness. But I think its time for me at least to find the exit. I need certain herbs and such for my wing." He thanked 'Lena, and turned to suit actions to words. Perhaps their adventure was over and it was time to say goodbye, or perhaps she would help him find his way.

Selena watched, concern painted on her face, as many emotions and frights passed through her companion's eyes. She waited for him to stabilize, her mind still clear and most unclouded. She knew from experience that if someone was in shock, the other should wait till things calm down to speak or force anything on the other. Once he began to calm himself, and had decided on a course of actions, she rose and stood next to him strongly. She could read his eyes as his thoughts passed through his mind.
"it will heal." he voice forward and comforting. "My companion from my earlier days suffered a similar wound, he was also a flutter. After a few months, his wings was good as new. You just need the correct herbs." Contrary to most people's view of flutters. they are not all pure and bright and optimistic. Her old companion was a cold hearted b*****d that used his beautiful appearance to lure mares to him. Selena was one of the only people he had ever respected.

She looked around, searching for an exit. They could not back-track to the bridge, as it no longer existed. They would have to either find a new one, or make their own. When she had been searching for the gem a moment ago, she had felt a breeze. That meant they were close to the surface. She closed her eyes and felt it once more. She quickly moved with it and found herself facing a wall of ice. She placed her ear next to it while she tapped the wall with her hoof. It was not too thick. She took a step back, and threw herself, hoof first, into the wall, causing it to crack greatly. She did it once more and caused it to shatter, and they could see an opening. She sighed in relief, while making the hole bigger so that the two of them could pass through safely. On the other side, there was no greenery or sun, they were still in the mountain. But they were much closer. Before them was a large tunnel, and the sound of wind was heard.

Laures knew in his mind that he was likely becoming shocky. He had seen and treated similar injuries to the one he'd just sustained enough to realise this. He was glad to find 'Lena wasn't a rather foolish airheaded "lady" like some of the other mares he knew. She seemed to be keeping calm well enough and seemed to know how to help someone who'd had a truamatic injury. It was that more than the words she spoke that helped him to regain enough of his own senses to do what must be done.

He noticed her bandana lying forgotten on the floor and gingerly retrieved it to hand to her. "I'm truly grateful for your help" he murmured. He tried a few ginger steps, even as waves of agony spreading from his wing threatened to steal his conciousness once more. He would have to try to shove the pain to the back of his mind as there was no way to set or splint his wings where they were. And the longer he was kept away from the herbs he needed to heal himself, the more likely it was that he might end up permanently crippled. A thought he couldn't bear.

He heard the sound of stone crumbling and looked at the mare gratefully. She'd found- well maybe more like created- a way to leave the cave. He heard the sigh of wind and felt the chill of mountain air, followed it like a siren's call into a tunnel which lead steadily upward, probably to an exit. With as much bounce in his step as he could manage, Laures walked on.

He was assualted by a rush of pain so intense it stole his breath and very nearly his conciousness. He realised he wouldn't be able to make it out on his own. He walked very carefully to 'Lena's side, with his uninjured side closest to her. "I'm sorry for taking such liberties," he whispered as he leaned as much of his weight as he dared against his companion.

Slowly, one step at a time, they made their way to the surface, where the sun was just beginning to rise above the horizon.

Selena saw him pick up her scarf from the floor, she had completely forgot about it. Having worn it around her neck for so long, rare taking it off and revealing the scar that it hid., The scar she now began trying to hide. She turned herself away from Laures, but held eye contact.
"Thank you," she said kindly when he returned it to her. She took it in between her teeth, making a metal note to have Anope tie it once she returned to her teepee. She stood, looking at her friend as she slowly began leaving the cavern of ice. Her clear blue eyes fixed on him and his wounded wing. She had a gut feeling something would soon go wrong. And just as her mind processed the thought, Laures face flashed with agony and he looked like he was going to black out. Selena took a stance and readied herself to catch him or prop him up. But to her surprise he still stood. She was amazed by his will to not loose consciousness, and to be able to bare the pain long enough to over come it.
However, she still stepped closer to him in case another wave of pain over came him with he next step. Feeling him lean against her in return made her jump slightly.

She looked at him, seeing how pale he was becoming, and Sel knew he did not have much strength left and she needed to get him some help very quickly.
She strengthened her side to be able to support her friend better and began moving forward, taking the same step as he was and they slowly made thier way out.

As the two walked out through the tunnel together, the clean air filled their lungs and gave them more will to leave the mouth of the giant mountain. They took their time and slowly progressed, and after a few hours they hit the surface.
Selena's face lit up and her eyes smiled as she saw the light of the sun peeking though the rock. Carefully placing Laures against the wall, she kicked another door for them, throwing rocks and boulders out of the way. She smiled looking at her work and through her scarf she muffled, "Here we go, just a bit further Laures. Keep strong."
