Almost all the money I have ever had was donated to charity. I have no use for it so why not give it to someone else in need.

Depends on which family you mean. I'm not as close as I want to be with my brother, and I'm not sure if I'll ever be. But I'd say we are pretty close, just opposites. As for the family that isn't blood related: we all love each other...most of the time.

I could, but that would take more time than I'm willing to give up from my science.

1. Have you ever had your heart broken?
Not, that I'd ever admit it, but yes, a bit. I don't believe in true love or love at first sight or any of that, but there was a woman once. It was really recent, I was just 19, we were moored in Bombay for months waiting for repairs (and honestly, the captain was securing fences for smuggled goods from Britain and the West Indies so he wasn't in a hurry). Her name was Asha and I didn't stand a chance. She was a dancer, and a clever thief and businesswoman. She may have been a whore for all I knew, but it didn't matter. I swear I nearly deserted and married her, but she convinced me to finish my voyage so I wouldn't be hunted down. I set sail for China (the captain was dipping his toes in the opium trade while he was at it) the letters were slow. We only exchanged two or three before we decided to meet in Canton. I checked the port logs every day, only to find that the vessel she had gained passage on had been less than reputable, and had been taken as a prize by the crown. I received word eventually that she had been killed, and I managed to convince the captain to write me off the books. I returned to Ireland in my haze, and ended up on a ship to the West Indies in a drunken stupor. It took quite a bit of women and alcohol to numb that one. I still carry a little ivory portrait of her somewhere in the bottom of my seabag.

Plenty fit from hard work, young enough that drinking hasn't made my mind a fog yet.

Only a bug? I've had worse. Actually, I've had plenty of weevils in my ship's biscuits, it's not too bad.

Not really. Doesn't lend itself to my trade. I do heartily enjoy looking at women. That isn't distraction though, they're usually more interesting than what I'm doing. It's all about priorities.
