Caterina Sforza is one complex character (whose depth was not well represented in the mediocre animated adaptation), perhaps the most complex character in Trinity Blood. I consider her a tragic figure.
From the outside (and in the beginning), she's apparently perfect: genius leader strategist, accomplished diplomat, goddesslike beauty without match.
But within, she is very vulnerable. She's a woman with a heart filled with desire of revenge for her dead family, struggling with a deep unrequited feelings of love towards Abel Nightroad and her jealousy, alongside dealing with an incurable disease that puts her closer and closer to the verge of death. Her will never crumbles even if her body does.
