Ziggy nodded and this time, he ducked down with her as the cold wave formed above their heads, lifting their bodies and setting them back down again. Ziggy stood up and shook the water from his head and looked down at his daughter proudly. Nothing could have made him happier then seeing her enjoying the thing he loved most to do. He nuzzled her and said, "Come on, let's go get the boogie board. If you like this, you'll love surfing!"
He started moving slowly back towards the beach, letting the wave pull him and then moving along as it pushed him forward.

Smiling and laughing Lunaria pulled back, mimicking her father's movements to move with the wave. " This is great Dad! But....isn't riding on a board like, riding on a board on the water? I can't swim yet...what if I fall off the board and into the water.... that's scary!" Her smile starts to fade around the edges,wilting like a flower.

Ziggy turned around and winked at her mischievously, "We won't go where you can't stand. If you fall, you land on your feet. And I'll be there the whole time," He turned back and kept going up the beach to their spot and grabbed the board in his teeth and began dragging it along, "Before you can learn to swim, you have to be comfortable in the water, and know that it won't hurt you. So, until then, we'll stay where you can stand. Doesn't keep me from teaching you surf basics."

Something didn't sound right about what Ziggy said as she thought about it for a second while she studied the roll of the waves.
"Ok.....that makes sense, for the most part. But can't the water really hurt me? So don't I need to know that to be aware of the danger....?"

As Ziggy approached the surf he threw the board down on top of waves and jumped on top, sending him sliding towards his daughter gracefully. He jumped off and lowered his face down towards hers, "You think I'd let anything happen to my little Luna?"
He grabbed the cord to the boogie board and began to tow it into the water, he stopped at about 2 feet deep, "Trust me!" He ran a paw through his wet hair and smiled boyishly.

Lunaria's eyes widened as Ziggy hopped on top of the board and rode it towards her. He made it look so easy!
She thought about what he asked for a second, and decided that while to her, not being afraid of the water didn't make much sense, she'd put her trust in her father. This was after all his element.
Giving him a smile she walked a bit father into the water, giggling a bit as the spray started to tickle her nose. " Sure thing Dad!", she called to him over the noise of the surf. Seeing his smile she wished she'd thought to bring a camera, that smile was so perfect, and she really didn't want to forget anything about today.

Ziggy smiled and said, "Plus, knowing the basics of surfing is also the basics of swimming, or something." He chuckled absently and pulled the boogie board close to Lunaria, and held it still. "Okay, so what you need to do is climb on the board, lying on your tummy, and hold on to the top. The water will hold you up and you'll be slightly in the water still." Ziggy then demonstrated how to do that by lying on the boogie board with his feet hanging off the top edge, and letting the waves gently pass below him. He then got off and again, held it still in front of her again.
"It will feel weird at first, but don't be worried. I'll be holding it in place, and I'll make sure you don't fall off." He picked up the cord in his teeth and smiled.

Fighting to keep a look of skepticism off her face she made a weak attempt at a return grin. Moving cautiously she raised a paw, placing it on the back of the board, and tested her weight on it. The board dipped into the water, but oddly enough after sinking just a bit she felt the board resist her weight. Her mouth formed into a little "o" of surprise.
She looked up quickly to still see Ziggy smiling. " WoW! The water does hold me!" Lunaria stepped up closer to the board, sat back on her haunches and climbed delicately onto the board, though she slipped a bit. When it came to stretching out on her tummy she had some trouble, sliding a bit with a squeek, nearly rolling off the board but righting herself." opps! it wiggles a bit!"
Shifting for a minute she got laid out comfortably on the board, holding tightly onto the top with her hind paws dangling off into the water.

Ziggy beamed. He was having so much fun, and couldn't have been more proud of his daughter. He held the the board in place and let the waves rock his daughter up and down along the swells with a bit of spray splashing up. He then said, "Hold on tight!"and he grabbed the cord and began to pull it while walking parallel from the shore. The waves now splashed laterally across as well as up and down.
He looked back at his daughter and chuckled, "Having fun back there?" He smiled and continued walking.

As the waves first began to rock her Lunaria looked frightened as she gasped and gripped the board tighter. Realizing that Ziggy wasn't letting her go she relaxed her grip and took a deep breath. " Sorry, this is really strange to me...." she said as she bit her lip a bit. She really didn't want to upset her father but this was all sooo new to her.
Lunaria took a moment to focus on relaxing closing her eyes. Strangely once she calmed down she found the motion of the waves rocking her to be quite soothing. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked about just as Ziggy told her to hold on. Quickly she did as he said.
"Eeek!" she cried out as the board tipped and rocked when Ziggy let go. She inhaled deeply as the board started to pull and tightened her grip even more. She lifted her head to keep it clear from the spray a bit more, and felt a giggle bubbling up. " This is fun!" She looked about as the waves rocked her, noticing how the beach moved in her vision as her father towed her.

Ziggy stopped walking forward and slowly began to turn staying close to the board as he did, blocking out most of the wave as it hit the board. He heard her giggle and smiled back, "How about we go a little faster, eh? Hold on!" With this he then being said and the board fully turned around, he ran back the way he came, jumping with the waves and splashing the water as he went.

Smiling wide Lunaria held on to the board with a squeal as her father took off at a run. "Whee! Run dad run!" She yelled as Ziggy pulled her fowards.
Feeling her hind paws starting to drag in the water as the board was pulled faster she started to try and scrabble farther onto the board so as to get her legs outta the water. As she did this she kicked her legs trying to get up, and noticed that kicking helped reduce the drag. So she worked to find a semi-rhythmic scissor style kick to keep the water from sucking her back.

Ziggy suddenly felt it become slightly easier to pull her and he looked back and saw his daughter kicking. He called back, "You got the idea!" He slowed a little bit and turned and then picked up the pacing running back along the way they had come. He then smiled and slowed to a stop, letting the boogie board slow as it approached him. He looked at her, and said, "Are you ready to try something new? It's a little harder, but I bet you can do it no problem!"

Lunaria's face glowed at the praise from Ziggy as kept up the kicking as he ran. When he allowed the board to slow she instinctively leaned back a bit to keep the board from nose diving.
Meeting her fathers gaze she nodded vigorously, rocking the board, in answer to his question.

Ziggy smiled eagerly and said, "Hang on!" with this he pulled her out into slightly deeper waters where he had to stand on his tip toes to stay above water, he continued just a bit further and stood on a rock that was halfway buried in the sand and held the boogie board steady as the waves hit them gently.
"So, like, I want you to remember what I taught you. First, you are going to need to hold onto the boogie board. When I say kick, I want you to kick as much as you can. If for some reason you slide off, don't panic, you'll be closer to where you can touch. And remember what I taught you about how to move in the water." He nuzzled her face and said, "I know you can do this. You got it in your genes."
He smiled and as a a wave began to crest under his skin he gave her boogie board a push and yelled out, "Kick Luna!"
