"When she's older the feathers won't be a problem." S'kagi explained, hoping it would help sooth churning stomachs and rattled nerves. "Right now they'll just be something that fills up space without actually providing anything. And might encourage an upset stomach, and thats the last thing anyone here wants to be cleaning up after, Even after a ruptured wherry-stomach." Ok the last bit probably didn't improve anyone else's mornings, but it was important. "You're doing fine. It gets easier." He promised Emori. "I'm going to check around the room. " He added, stepping away for a moment to go investigate the others at work.

T'ka crinkled her nose a little in distaste. When she heard she and Haanyath would be in lessons, taught things...she had been excited, hopeful. This was not what she was expecting though. This was distasteful and...she shook her head. Haanyath leaned against her leg.
<> T'ka sighed and scratched the green's eye ridges. Haanyath was like that. She thought she could do it on her own. She didn't think she needed help with her food. In fact, she didn't want help.
<> Haanyath grimaced; well, as much as a dragon could grimace. She practically radiated displeasure. She didn't want to be here. Why did she need to learn things? All she needed was her human. She didn't need a stupid Weyr; where everyone looked down on her...her claws dug into the floor just a little. <>
<>
Lost in conversation with Haanyath, T'ka hadn't been paying attention, and didn't hear what they were supposed to be doing. <>

R'dan glanced around the group of weyrlings. Unfortunately, he didn't really know any of the others in this group. It seemed the few friends he'd had as a Candidate had not Impressed. Great. That meant he had to find someone to pair up with... And looking around, he noticed that most of the others had paired up already. All except... sharditall. The girl who'd Impressed that first green was the only one he spotted not yet paired up. Suppressing a groan, he got up and headed towards T'ka.
My sister does not look happy... I don't want to go over there. If she's not happy, that'll make me not happy. And I don't want to be unhappy...
R'dan sighed and reached down to stroke the green's head. "We were told to pair up... Would you rather get in trouble with the Weyrlingmaster?"
... That would make me unhappy too... Why can't we work with my brother Khunoth? He's a good brother!
"Coatlicueth... everyone else is paired up..." He muttered, glancing up at T'ka as they grew closer. "Er... You don't have a partner, do you? Cuz I don't... and we were told to partner up and..." R'dan mumbled on, nerves causing him to ramble on more than was really needed.
Mine, less of the talking. I don't think she understood any of that mashed together mumbling. The green butted her head against the boy's leg.

Nodding happily to Annelie and Yansanth, Kallista turned and looked to Astarteth. Her green appeared to be bored and not interested at all in the gold dragonet who was her sister. "I'm Kallista and this is Astarteth. I know your name because C'ren Searched us both."
Moving to the other side of the dead beast, Kallista tried not to gag. Definitely not a pleasant smell. But she would do what was needed to do in order to take care of her dragon. Shaking the girl's hand, Kallista turned and watched S'kagi start to make rounds around the room. "Do you want to make the first cut or should I?

"Well, Hesen, looks like it's us cutting up wherries, then," La said happily, then blinked and realized that she couldn't really call her friend Hesen anymore. "Um, I'm sorry. I don't know your new name yet. H'sen? H'...H'dek?" She grimaced and looked at her hands, feeling awfully silly about it. In general, La didn't have to ask names. But this was a bit different, really. She had only met this boy a few days before and already his name was changed. But no matter, she was certain he'd take it gracefully...or at least, she hoped so.
When Isonth realized what they were aiming towards, her eyes whirled green and she stood bolt upright happily. This means time for food, yes? she asked, and La gave her a wry smile. "Not...entirely," she said, moving toward an unoccupied wherry carcass and looking at the knives laid out with it. Isonth sniffed the carcass enthusiastically, completely undaunted that Lanakirene kept pushing her nose away to contemplate the beast. She had occasionally helped carve meat in the kitchens, or cut things into more manageable portions, but she had never actually started at the skinning stage. It was unpleasant, yes, but it was something she was going to have to get used to, and it was helping to focus on how Isonth treated the scent. Her dragon thought the odor of raw meat and the tang of blood was delectable. Focusing on that, La turned to H'dek and tipped her head at him.
"Would you like to start off, or should I?"

S'kagi walked a slow circuit around the room, one eyebrow arched to encourage less gossip, more cutting. They had a lot of ground he wanted to cover, and learning how to take the load off the drudges was just one of the important topics. He paused, folding his arms and leaning his weight on one leg, head tilted as he studied T'ka and her would be partner, R'dan, waiting briefly to see if any intervention was needed. He was pleased to see the dragon seemed to have temporarily settled down, however.

Butchering wherries? H'dra's expression became one of mild panic. He had never seen done that before! He was lucky to be allowed to have a part in the cutting up of ovines back home! Apprentices didn't get to cut up meat, not when there were other chores to do like mucking out and keeping the sheep together. The young man tried desperately to remember the times he had been shown by his father how to cut up a dead ewe, hoping that they would help him in not totally screwing up the bird. Birds couldn't be that different from sheep, could they?
'Food is food,' Dievath agreed, as he craned his neck to get a better look around the room. There were so many of his clutchmates here! This made him very happy indeed. His forked tail gave a small wag at the tip as his eyes whirled blue. Could he talk to them now? His had said they were supposed to listen but listening to people cut up meat didn't sound very fun. Why watch someone cut when they could cut it up themselves and then he could eat it? He would have liked that very much.
H'dra didn't seem to notice his blue's thoughts, instead craning his neck to get a better look at what the two 'volunteers' were doing. Dievath, as though understanding his rider's intent, lifted his own head up too, forefeet on H'dra's legs as he surveyed the room. His blue head was now quite a bit above the other seated riders, giving him a clear view of what was going on. 'I like it up here. I can see everyone!' The only response he received was a soft grunt as his rider attempted to support his weight.
S'kagi's words reminded him of his father's own advice, and the young bluerider made a mental note to avoid puncturing any organs. He remembered when one of the older apprentices had done that. The smell had been awful. At the mention of partners, H'dra glanced about the room nervously. Did he really have to find someone to pair with? He didn't really know anybody here… should he go and ask someone? For several long moments he fidgeted in his seat, before he decided that he might as well start at it alone. If anyone came late and needed a partner… well, he would try to be a good match for them. "C'mon, Dievath, we have work to do. You're going to be my partner, okay?"
He approached his dead wherry and carefully picked up the knife. It looked good enough, not quite like the equipment back home but it would serve its purpose. Dievath planted his forefeet on the surface to watch, offering suggestions whenever he thought it was getting too quiet. So far so good.

"Oh, shards! I can't believe I fergot my manners like that." H'dek had been so busy trying to hide, he completely forgot an introduction was in order! "Yes, I'm H'dek now. And this is Bondyeth. He's a bronze an' would rather you not forget it," he added, shaking his head with a small sigh. He reached over to scratch Bondyeth, but the dragon had already moved.
Confused by Isonth's sudden movement, the bronze flared his wings and followed suit, sitting up to take notice of why they were all gathered here. Are we eating? She said were eating. The bronze tipped his head and eyed his rider, tail thrashing a little at the prospect. Now that he thought about it, he would certainly like something to eat. Would he have to share with Isonth? He could eat that whole thing by himself! (And he would, too, just to prove his point.)
"I think you be'er start, La. I used t' work wi' grapes, I ain' never have t' do this a'fore," H'dek admittedly sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. Part of him wished he had taken the opportunity to tag along with his mother in the kitchen once or twice, but there was no time for regrets, was there? "Unless, you dun wanna," H'dek added. "'Cuz I can, if y'all really dun wanna."
Make sure they don't mess it up, Mine!

"It's not a problem, H'dek." La grinned at him and nodded. "Mine hasn't changed, though whether that's lucky for everyone or not, I'm not sure. After all, two syllables is a lot nicer than four." She grinned and reached down to swat at Isonth, who had gone for the leg and was quite ready to start nomming away at the thing until it yielded to her. "And we have no patience today, is this what you're saying to me?" she asked the dragon, only barely scolding. Pulling her head back, Isonth looked over at Bondyeth and attempted to occupy herself with him.
My Lanakirene wouldn't mess it up, she said slowly, tipping her head and regarding Bondyeth with mild interest. As La picked up a knife, she glanced at her dragon and hissed softly. "Careful, love," she chided gently, then sighed, took a deep breath, and made the first cut. Isonth immediately focused on the wherry when the smell of meat strengthened, and she laid her head on the table and watched it adoringly. "You're not getting any yet," La answered her, raising an eyebrow and slicing open the belly with what managed to be a surprisingly deft movement. Nothing seemed to be punctured, everything smelled...terrible, but not worse than usual. Yes. She thought she was doing a pretty good job.
But it smells delicious, Lanamine, Isonth said, hunger flickering red in her eyes. La grimaced at that but shook her head. "No, not yet," she re-asserted, then glanced at H'dek to see how he was taking it. Hopefully well...

L'an had begun to quickly search for a partner when the Weyrling master told them to. Of course, he eventually realized it might do to pick Gh'lan and his brown, seeing as they shared a table. "What d'you think? It's not like scaling fish, but maybe we could do it, huh?" When he glanced around again true enough all the rest had been paired. He supposed that settled it then. With a nod to the other boy he moved to gather what they'd need, inspecting the dead wherries curiously.
Get a fat one please... Alche thought to add, seeming to come more alive with food so near in her future. I'm so hungry...aren't you? She bobbed her nose at her brown counterpart, and whirled her eyes from blue towards a more reddish, hungry tint.

Annelie released Kallista's hand as she nodded her head. "Oh..." she began, but then faded off a second later. C'ren...C'ren...The name was familiar but no face popped into the woman's head. She hadn't seen the man in years, and didn't remember much about him other then that he obviously was a rider... Better to just feign knowledge. "...He did? That's interesting."
She gave a small smile and then picked up the small knife on their table, though paused when the girl's question actually sunk in. "OH.. um, here, you can start... if you want..." Eyes blinked rapidly for a moment and she held out the carving tool, handle first, to Kallista.
While the smell of the wherry was indeed appetizing, and made the dragonet's stomach rumble, Yansanth kept her shy attention to Astarteth. With her gold body bunched up near Annelie's leg and seat, the little queen extended her neck and nose out towards the rather pretty little green.
Um... hello... she tentatively said, her head cocked slightly to one side.

Nodding in response, Kallista took the carving knife handle first and looked over the carcass in front of them. It was a medium sized beast, or had been while it was alive. Definitely a male. Looking back at the progress the first two had made, the runner stuck the knife into the dead wherry and began to cut. Thankfully, the blade hadn't sunk in deep enough to cut any major organs. "I tell you, I will be thankful for the day they can take down their own food. Ugg, this stinks worse than firestone ash. So are you and Yansanth getting settled?"
Always the friendly type until pushed, Kallista proceeded with caution and carved a piece from the breast.
Astarteth was working on cleaning her claws again. She could not get enough of being clean. Her forked tongue worked diligently while her rider cut some food for her. When the little gold extended her nose and neck in greeting, the green blinked. Hello. I am Astarteth. I am a green. Lucky me. I get to make a flame. From her vantage point, Astarteth was blatantly bragging.

T'ka aimed a skeptical look at R'dan. Why was he bothering her? He was kind enough to tell them they were partnering now? At least...that's what she thought he said. He didn't seem terribly comfortable being near her. Or possibly Haanyath. There seemed to still be a lot of ill feeling towards the dragonet with the most vicious hatching. Not that she thought Haanyath would really hurt anyone now. That was bred out of dragons, right?
Wasn't S'kagi supposed to be her partner though? He had made fun of her earlier in class and singled her out, saying he wanted to be her partner. She watched the bronzerider from the corner of her eye. He was watching her and R'dan. Well, if he wasn't interjecting or interfering...maybe he was seeing how well she would get along with someone else? Or how Haanyath would do with company?
"I will be your partner, on the conditions that you stop mumbling. It doesn't befit a ride, and that you get over whatever silly thought or prejudice it is that causes you to act so skittish around Haanyath and I. It is also unbecoming."
<> Haanyath grumbled unintelligbly back to T'ka, but under the scrutiny of her superior, she would try hard to be minimally offensive. But at the same time, Haanyath was displeased on a number of levels. With the exception of Khunoth, she refused to admit any of the dragonets were her siblings, and that Coatlicueth didn't seem to approve of her. Haanyath bristled just a little, her lip twitching a little, as she tried to listen to her human's advice. But she couldn't tell the other green to scram. That would be disobeying T'ka, and she didn't want to get in trouble.
Haanyath stomped her forelegs just a little, turning her side to Coatlicueth, and sidling closer to T'ka, casting irritated glances over at Coatlicueth every so often. Haanyath lacked tact, obviously, so her message was far from subtle, but T'ka didn't really notice what Haanyath was doing, for being in conversation with R'dan.

He had offered to partner with her, though to be honest it had slipped his mind in the semi chaos, being his first attempt to actually teach future riders. Embarassing but he'd be damned if he'd admit it to them just at the moment. "Go ahead, I can step in if you're having a problem. You're doing a lot better now." He accnowledged, offering her a sinsere smile. He was fairly pleased at this actually, since he'd also noticed the reluctant change in her dragons behavior. It was an life changing event to Impress a dragon but equally important to come to terms with them.

The young woman couldn't help but give a small chuckle at Kallista's reaction to the dead beast's smell. She couldn't blame her, the thing was absolutely putrid, but Annelie had smelled and seen nastier things in the depths of the kitchens and Lower Caverns, so she remained undaunted. ...She did nod her head in agreement, though, and then continued to do so as she answered the others' question.
"Yes... well enough. It's still very odd and... just..." she paused and then flailed for the right word to describe her feelings on the situation. But, in the end, being the shy creature that she was, Anne gave up and lamely ended in saying "Odd" again.
"... How are you and your Astarteth?"
Yansanth pulled her head and neck back quickly enough in surprise towards the grooming green's to-the-note response, which caused Annelie to glance down at the dragonet pair for a brief second. The little gold recovered quickly, though, and soon cocked her head once more and stared at Astarteth with yellow and green swirling eyes.
But... I thought all dragons made flame? she asked the other, softly. Didn't they? Didn't she get to make flame too? And fly about in great fun and go on adventurous... adventures?
