So we'll put a little taboo on any mention of Ashkenazi origin in this thread.

Now: Who would like to provide us with some info on Sephardim?

If this thread goes back in the "one race/nationality/ethnicity/group is cooler than another or all others" direction again, I'm locking this thread again, and as a last resort, deleting it. We will not become a guild that supports that garbage. I feel this is very, very clear, and therefore there will be no misunderstandings, capiche?

Capiche!

Most of us here know that referring to a Jew as Sephardi means that they or their family came from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain/Portugal), but now it has kind of turned into an umbrella term meaning Jews of the Spanish rite. Basically Jews who practice in the same way as Spanish Jews. I'm not really sure if Mizrachi Jews appreciate this...

Capiche... *gulp*

I was shocked to find out something yesterday: One of my teachers took an A-level in Judaism and got an A, and yet doesn't know what Ashkenazi or Sephardic are. She thought they were Jewish cults or something.

So how many people actually know the difference between Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews?

I know!

I was trying to figure out which one I counted as. Ashkenazi, most definitely.

Interestingly, though most of Northern and Eastern Europe are Ashkenazi, not so with Dutch Jews. The majority there (unless they emigrated from somewhere else) are of Spanish descent, and are therefore Sephardi.

Most of France is Sephardi, though some areas closer to Germany are predominantly Ashkenazi.

The majority of Jews in Central and South America are also Sephardi, since they descend from Spanish, Portuguese, and some Italian Jews. However, there are also substantial Ashkenazi minorities because of Jews emigrating from Germany and Poland during and after World War II.

Asian and African Jews are mostly Mizrachi, though in Yemen the community is referred to as Teimani, since Teiman is Hebrew for Yemen. Though they count as Mizrachi, most Persian Jews refer to themselves as Persian specifically.

And yes, there are a small minority of Jews that never actually left the Holy Land when "all" Jews were expelled by one conquerer or another. This Israeli Jews, also known as Yerushalmi, have a gorgeous nusach (cantillation 'tune' for chanting Torah) -- it sounds very similar to a Muslim muezzin chanting Quran, which is really beautiful to hear.

There's the accent with Hebrew, as well. If you see the letter tet and you pronounce it "t", you've a Sephardic accent. You pronounce it "s" if you have an Ashkenazi accent and "th" with an Israeli, if I can remember.

It's not that relevant, but it's a way of telling.

Convert through a rav that you like, trust, and respect his halachic decision making process. After you're a Jew, you can figure out what KIND of Jew to be.

Do take note, though: Once a convert (fully converted, not in-transit) eats kitniyot during Pesach, he or she is Sephardi for life. Choose wisely, Grasshopper.
