Aine slipped in next to him sliding him over so she could curl around the eggs herself. She nosed them gently. "Mommy's back, sweeties." she said quietly and then looked at her mate. "I am." she said. She nuzzled him purring lightly and licked his cheek. "Thank you." she said. "Thank you for everything. I owe you so much, Foggy." she smiled up at him and then settled in curling tightly around the eggs and sliding back to snuggle against her mate to bask in his warmth.
"I love you, Foggy." she said drowsily she then sighed happily. "I wonder what they'll look like..." she mused. "I'll bet they'll both be handsome just like you..." she sighed and then closed her eyes dropping off into a light sleep.

Foggy smiled up at Aine and chuckled. He was at that stage of exhaustion that everything seems silly or trivial. "Me? I didn't do much. Hunted. Cleaned bedding. Fed you. You know, apprentice jobs." He closed his eyes and smiled. "I didn't bring two perfect beings into the world." He flicked his tail around Aine and draped his neck over her shoulders. She was warm. And she smelled so good. After a week, he was finally getting used to being with her all the time, getting used to the fact that he could fall asleep and she would still be there. She would always be there, he was sure of it. "They'll be gorgeous, Aine," he murmured. "With both our looks, they'll be sure to be wonderful. Can't wait to meet 'em." As he drifted off into sleep, he murmured, "I love you."
~~~ Deep inside, something changed. It was cold and hard, but now warmth flowed in, and with it the beginning pangs of consciousness. There was something out there. Many somethings. And in here, there was one thing. Me. He wasn't sure who he was, or what he was. But he was warm, safe...and cramped. Had he ever been this cramped before? He began to thrash against the close confines of his bonds, struggling to be free, to breathe...
What is it to live? To be alive? To be conscious, to think, to feel to breathe? To experience all the things that the world can hold. To study, to have, to hold, to be all the things that living implied. Where am I? Who am I? Why am I here? What does it mean to be alive? Will it hurt? Does it have to? The thoughts chased each other round and round like a whirlwind stirring up leaves. The bright center in an absolute darkness, with a slow pulsing rhythm. The rhythm of life.
I want....I want....I want to be me! and with that final deciding thought he began to fight one of the only battles of his life.
Aine slept soundly curled tightly against her mate. She purred as she dreamed of wind and feathers and chasing after her mate, his orange paws leading her in a playful chase that usually ended with them in a heap. She smiled in her sleep curling tighter on the eggs nestled in her side. She reached out and touched one with her nose and instantly bolted awake as it rocked gently against her muzzle, her eyes wide as she tried to comprehend what had happened. "Foggy...?" she called out hesitantly.
Foggy ran through moorland, leaped across streams, flew over seaside cliffs, pounded through woods, calling out the names he felt inside himself. Somewhere. They were out there. Smelling softly of young life, his mate, and the smell of borage leaves. His children. And out there were his mates, only two of them smelling the same. Meant to be. Swirls on silver, hearts on tan, silver paws and ginger, a flash of gold fur. A child. But now there were two. He was eager to meet the second, what would--Foggy opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was a rocking egg. The hatching. His blue eyes grew wide and he sneezed in amazement.
Harder. Push against the confines, the wall, between him and the light, him and life, him and a thousand things to rediscover, resee, retouch, relearn. He wanted out. With a burst of young energy, he kicked through the wall that held him in, bursting through into a world of cold, touch, and light. He squeaked and gazed up into the face of a much, much larger being, tan and comforting, his own blue eyes wide. He knew her from before.
Aine gasped as she looked down at the first hatchling. She knew him. She'd always known him. Her son, her baby boy. Her first and only child in her other life. "Cathair." she breathed leaning down to nuzzle her son licking him clean. "Cathair, Cathair! Oh my baby!" she said tears of joy streaming down her face.
It took him longer to fight his way free. He wasn't a fighter by nature. He didn't want to fight to hurt anyone. It was against his nature. But this is the only way!!! he cried to himself. Live or die! You make the choice now!!! he struggled once more. And I want to LIVE! and with that he kicked his way through the wall and into the world that was life. he peered around with big coral eyes, his mothers eyes, but he didn't know that yet. He shivered and nuzzled into the warmth that was to his side drinking in the scent. Mother... he said to himself. This is Mother... he slid along her side waiting for her attention that was taken up by his big brother. But that was okay, he could wait.
Cathair...Cathair sounds right for me... The eldest wiggled his ears and smiled up at his mother, turning to crane his neck to gaze at the dragon he knew was there. His father. Speed, curiosity, and a fighting spirit...Cathair smiled at his mother. Aine. He licked her nose and purred happily. Suddenly, he sensed something nearby and turned in astonishment. Another dragon his age, who looked like his mother and father. A brother...I have a brother...
Foggy leaned over Aine's body, blinking at the child in front of him. Another beautiful child. He smiled and leaned over to lick his younger son. "What shall we name you?" he murmured. "Something to go with Cathair, right, Aine?" He sighed as something occurred to him. "They'll be hungry...I suppose I ought to go hunting..."
Aine laughed as her son licked her nose. "Oh, my baby boy. You've come back to us." she said happily nuzzling him again before turning to her second and brand new child. "Oh! He looks just like you Foggy!" she said happily wait until after Foggy had licked him to pull him close to her to nuzzle and clean. "Oh, what shall we name you little one, hmm?" she wondered. "Something to go with your brother..." she paused and thought. "Dagda..." she said slowly. "How does that sound, little one?" she asked. "Dagda." she said it again with a smile nuzzling her second son. She then looked up at Foggy and nodded. "That sounds good." she said.
The little gray boy waited patiently for the attention to come to him. It was obvious that something was going on that was beyond his understanding. He listened closely though and looked up in shock and wonder at his father as he leaned down and licked him. He squeaked and tumbled backwards before being scooped up by Mother. He squeaked again as she began to lick and nuzzle him crooning happily to her. He listened closely as she said his name. Dagda. he mulled it over before smiling up at his mother. I'm Dagda! he said to himself before nuzzling into her.
Foggy smiled at his younger son. "Dagda..." he murmured. "I like it, but what does it mean? Cathair means warrior...and you are, my son." He smiled and nuzzled Cathair. "So if Cathair is the warrior, what is Dagda?" He realized as he said it that it didn't matter. He loved both his sons, no matter what they did or what was in store for them. He would always be proud of them. "I'll be back, Cathair, Dagda," he murmured as he stood up. "I love you both, but I'm sure you're hungry!"
Cathair watched his father solemnly for a minute before tackling his brother affectionately. Dagda. Dagda. I have a brother named Dagda...Dagda... He smiled. Something about his brother told him he wouldn't be a fighter. Oh well. You don't have to fight. I can take care of you, little brother. Cathair winced as he felt his stomach growl. He sighed and curled up against his mother's side, anxious for his father to return with something to eat.
Aine smiled up at Foggy. "Dagda is a Celtic God of the earth. I hope that with such a name, he'll be able to accomplish great things." she said. She turned her head to watch her children before looking up at Foggy running her head against his side. "Hurry back." she said. She then turned her attention to the broken egg shells and cleared them away from the boys not wanting them to hurt themselves on the pieces.
Dagda watched Foggy with a mix of awe and trepidation. His father was so big, so strong. Dagda trembled slightly at ever matching his father in anything, and deep down he was afraid that he'd disappoint Foggy someday. He squeaked as Cathair jumped on him and scurried to Aine's side crooning to her.
Aine turned her head as Dagda scurried to her. "What's the matter little one?" she said softly. She pulled him close to her and nuzzled him. She laughed a bit as she heard his stomach rumble. "Oh, little one. Its alright, your daddy will be back soon with something for you." she glanced over as Cathair and smiled at him puling him close to her as well and curling up around them. "Mommy's here." she said before yawning and settling back on her paws. "Mommy's here...." she rumbled gently to the pair and closed her eyes waiting for Foggy to come back.
Foggy nodded and nuzzled Aine. "I hope for great things for our boys, too. I'm sure they'll be the best in the mountains." With that, he trotted out of the cave and into the forest to hunt some rabbits. He couldn't wait until they could catch a deer again.
Cathair shook his head and settled down next to his mother and brother. This would take some getting used to, and something told him that Dagda would be a lot different. Doesn't matter. Takes all types to be a dragon, doesn't it? I'll take care of him...make sure nothing goes wrong. He sighed as his stomach growled again and he turned towards the cave entrance, gazing longingly outside. When would his father come back with food? He needed food...he was so hungry...Someday, I'll be helping him...we'll take down any food we need out there...
Foggy found a stroke of luck about fifteen minutes into the woods; a small herd of deer had paused by a pond for a drink of water. A lame doe limped her way on the perimeter of the herd, waiting for her turn. He plunged out of the undergrowth straight at her, snatching her leg swiftly and yanking back to throw her on the ground as the rest of the herd scattered. Before she could recover, he was sinking his fangs into her neck and dragging her body back to the cave for a feast.
Aine looked up as she heard something outside and the sounds of something being drug. She nuzzled her hatchlings before getting up slowly and moving towards the entrance. Her eyes widened as she saw her mate dragging a doe. "Foggy!? How ever did you manage that!?" she said surprised. Though a good hunter, her mate was much better at bringing down smaller prey than large. She shook her head and hurried over to help. "Nevermind, lets get this inside." she picked up half and helped him bringing inside the cave.
Dagda curled up next to Cathair and shivered slightly when Mother got up to see what was making the noise outside. Cold... he crooned quietly. Though it was warm with Cathair next to him it wasn't the same as when Mother was with them. She offered warmth and protection, from what it didn't matter, only that Dagda felt he needed a lot of protection for some reason. Hungry... he thought to himself...his eyes widened as Mother returned with Father and a deer. He squeaked and gurgled happily as he waited for them to lash it open for him and his brother.
Foggy smiled as Aine got up to assist him. "Pure dumb luck," he admitted. "She was slow and I managed to get close. They were being pretty loud for a bunch of deer." He helped her bring it into the cave, settling it on the floor not far from the hatchlings. He smiled and turned to them, nuzzling and licking them affectionately. He curled his tail gently around Dagda for a minute. He could hardly wait to get to know his younger son. He knew Cathair...or at least...he was pretty sure he knew Cathair...but he didn't know Dagda. He smiled and returned to the carcass to bite through the belly to allow his children access to the nutritious meat within.
Cathair shivered, snuggling closer to his brother and resting his head on his shoulder. He watched his parents drag in the food and got up, nuzzling his brother with a squeak. Dagda should have first pick...I'll let him have first pick... He almost lost his reserve when he caught a whiff of the fresh deer. His hunger almost overpowered his thoughts and he trembled in anticipation of his first real meal.
Dagda squeaked as Foggy wrapped his tail around him and looked up at his father. He blinked a few times and then watched as his father sliced into the does belly. He squeaked and then rushed forward tripping over his own feet landing nearly inside the carcass before beginning to snap up the savory morsels from inside the deers body, stopping only when he'd distended his tiny stomach from so much food.
He squeaked and gurgled and then yawned hugely feeling tired from having a full tummy.
Aine smiled and watched her hatchlings her tail lashing back and forth wary of anyone or anything that would try to hurt them. Even in the safety of their home, she was still worried that something could happen to them.
She smiled softly as Dagda finished and yawned. She moved over and nuzzled her little boy carefully picking him up and moving him back over to the bedding to clean and hold close sure that he and his brother would soon be ready to nap.
Cathair quickly stepped forward once his brother began to eat and settled next to him, tearing at the deer, eating as much as he could. He almost purred in happiness at the taste of the food; it felt good to have a full stomach like he had had in the egg. But this was more satisfying, more tasty. He could get used to this, Cathair decided.
When he had had his fill, he gave a small burp and echoed his brother's yawn, curling up in a ball next to his brother, his eyes sliding shut, falling asleep almost instantly.
Foggy smiled at their children, wrapping his tail around Cathair and holding him firmly between his paws. He lowered his head to lick at the blood around his son's mouth. "Such perfect boys," he murmured to Aine, smiling as Cathair twitched contentedly in his sleep.
Aine nuzzled Dagda as he drifted off and purred softly to her boys. "They are...they most definitely are...such sweet little things." she said. She looked up at Foggy, her eyes full of love and adoration. "I love you, Foggy." She said. "Always, forever, until the end of time." she smiled.
She then turned slightly and licked Cathair and nuzzled him. "Welcome, home, sweetheart."
