 Somewhere in the shadows.

Time seemed to be slowing down, just as the woods felt like it had had its fill of the cold and snow. Apparently winter had a good sense of humor along with a bitter grip, and the large black wolf found himself entwisted within the grips of a most biting frost. It was the kind of cold air which p***ked at his whiskers and embedded in his old scars, stinging the great beast's tiny imperfections and leaving him in a distorted state of being most miserably cranky and stony. But despite the day's harsh wind and chill, there wasn't much snowfall save for the occasional unearthing of pack snow. It made the woods surrounding the frozen lake cloudy with a kind of snowy mist.

The long wolf found himself seated upon a narrow slab of limestone, his pale green eyes slowly scanning the mist for anything which particularly struck him. He appeared as a kind of beacon in the blue haze- his coat as black as dusty coal, and form broad. Something was thrumming at his chest, and keeping him conscious of the day. He had intended to continue his hunt for a better place to den his mate at today, but the snowy mist presented a bit of a problem for evening travel. He could see fine- this was of no interest to him. His scent was as good as it had ever been, his mind fluttering with the images of birds and trees in the distance like a strange collage. But Phib felt something else roaming about the mists that evening which was of some concern to him, although he was not quite sure what it was. He felt his heart heavy, and he was feeling a peculiar state of mortality.

There was a low thumping sound in the distance, and the large creature rose upon his shoulders, the muscles in his neck flinching in the movement. Out of the shadows, a ghostly looking elk trotted by- fully antlered and huge in the mist. It stopped for a moment, a bit surprised to see the wolf seated upon the stone. Phib watched it slowly sidestep, his nostrils flaring and bright antlers shining in the mist. But no sooner had it arrived, did it snort with a plume of frosted air, and gallop off. He watched the creature as it moved, his pale green eyes narrowing. 'Who lurks amongst the shadows?' His thick voice rumbled in his head, and the end of his tail shifted.

 ------------------------

The cold bit harshly at the lanky wolf whose nose was mere millimeters from the ground as the scent of prey filled the surrounding air. With each breath a shuddering coldness grasped at his throat only to be relieved by the warm air expelled from his lungs. Winter was friendly to no one, especially the loner who travelled far and wide for food, away from the comfort of a stable den. The only warmth one got was from the constant moving of muscles.

The mist that hung in the air made for poor visibility but the sable and white hued wolf cared little. His nose was more than enough to find prey, the only problem poor visibility created was avoiding the deadly antlers that his prey possesed. The scent that filled his nostrils was that of an elk. How old said elk was was not something that could be determined. Hopefully mother nature would be kind and let him have a meal.

Hurrying through the woods the male followed the strong scent of food that moved deftly through the foliage. It was certainly not an easy thing to do, following a hooved animal, but it was his only lead to meat. As the scent grew stronger his pace slowed as he tried to peer through the snowy mist that had settled. The sound of a hoof and the occasional grunt was enough to have the predator's mouth watering. Slowly slinking forward, using the sound of the elk as his guide, he made his approach.

Finally the figure of the elk came into view and Stormy could do nothing but sigh and stand to full height. It was a bull elk fashioned with a full rack of antlers, not something he would attempt to take down on his own. It would surely mean death.

As the elk caught sight of him it darted off through the mist. Utter dissapointment filled the wolfs being as he plopped his rear end down on the cold, hard ground.

 'Who lurks amongst the shadows?'

He leapt to his paws, ears up and eyes alert. Carefully he followed the path the elk took. His paws carefully placed so as not to attract attention the sable moved to where the voice had come only to come upon the form of a much larger wolf.

'Nothing more than I." He responded with tail low. The last thing he wanted was to pick a fight with such black beast.

 --------------------------

The sound of a light voice rolled over his ears, and the black creature turned his head towards the parti-colored shadow in the distance. It was a light voice, and by the shape of the shadow he did not seem to be of particular threat to the male. His ears flushed forward, a bit surprised to hear him speaking. Had he spoken aloud? Hopefully this was not the early onsets of dementia; poor Ryoku would never let him hear the end of it.

Slowly, the black wolf moved from the rock and to the snow floor below. He took his stride in two lurching jumps, although he could have made it in one. He did not seem to be particularly interested in startling the other, although when he approached his tail did arch somewhat. "Only you?" He rumbled, his voice stern but pleasant. "And who might you be?" He questioned, seating himself down, and letting his arched tail relax at his side.

He did not bring himself all too close, for although he was suspicious of anyone wandering in the mist, the lanky young male seemed generally startled, and kept his distance of the black creature. He respected the caution, and did nothing to intrude upon it. Instead he sat with a quizzical expression upon his worn face, sharp green eyes focusing in on the wolf before him.

 Ryoku is blind, you know....

After so much confliction on her opinions regarding the matter of winter, Ryoku half heartedly decided that although she enjoyed the cold snow and the playfulness it brought out in other wolves, it was considerably not good for her health. It wasn't that she had ever been particularly healthy throughout her life, but winter certainly didn't help the matter either.

At that particular moment, one would find the slate grey female stretched out in the sunniest place she- well, Phib under her proffering, could find. But the sun was setting, and the warm sun rays were slowly being swallowed by the night. Although she could not see, she might have noticed that in this brilliant orange light, she, and the rest of the snow appeared to be almost covered by a sheet of gold silk. But such descriptive imagery is often lost upon such wolves as she- for she did not see the beauty of the sunset, and was only troubled that the flippant warmth was fading from her narrow frame.

With a soft sneeze, she raised her head, blinking blearily from the light. It was miserable that even though she could not see the sun, it still bothered the sensitive eye tissue. It felt something like a gentle stinging, and it was altogether most unfortunate.

To her knowledge, Phib would be around soon to collect her. She'd been good about wandering ever since she'd gotten caught up in the bad weather, and sent poor Kiba (whom, she'd yet to diligently thank), on a wild goose chase for the origin of the blind little omega. Phib seemed in better spirits because of her more static position, and she did not see any reason to break from it just yet.

'Such is my state.' She thought to herself silently, and ironically, her voice in her head not carrying her familiar jaggering speech. In fact, although hinted previously to others, she truly did do her best to hide the state of her intelligence. For what reason, however, was left to be discovered. As if to rebuke her sudden gentle thought, she yawned, a low whining pitch escaping her mouth as she rolled gently in the snow, eager for more heat and some company in the darkness of the sunset.

 -------------------------

Company she would soon recieve, if Kam could help it. He was heading through the dying sunlight at a brisk trot, clouds of vapor puffing from his open mouth and nostrils. He'd been trotting this way for a while, just for the pure joy of doing so. But his body was beginning to protest, and so he slowed himself. He was back to a walk before long, lanky legs carrying him a good distance with each step. His paws made little noise on the snow, but there was a faint, consistant 'scruch, scretch, scrunch' from the snow under-paw.

His ears were perked and his golden eyes dancing about, how he wished Noke had come on this long walk with him, the setting sun was beautiful today. "It is a pitty I can not see it every day." He spoke out loud, to himself. Though he knew if he watched the sun set every day he would not longer bathe in it's beauty, he would grow tired of it and never watch it again.

 -----------------------

The pale wolf sat soundly, continuing to stare her face into the direction of the falling sun. It wouldn't be the first time she wished she could see it, although in her minds eye she pictured the large orange globe slowly moving over the sky. Sometimes, she tried to make being blind into a game. She liked to be optimistic- perhaps being blind was less an disadvantage then people thought. Without being able to see, she could simply imagine whatever she wanted. She could make wolves look like whatever she wished- she could make the scenery always covered with flowers and everything bright... although, only on some days was she able to fully immerse herself into that dream world, for on a darker occasion, her vision was still dark.

The sound of another's voice shook her from her thoughts, and at once, she turned her head. It was a useless gesture, but she didn't like to appear deaf as well as blind. Her dumb eyes blinked slowly, although she knew not where the voice had come from. Shyly, she whined and lifted her head. A scent was on the wind, and it did not appear to be that of her mate. Carefully, she readjusted herself, waiting to see if the creature would make himself apparent.

"Hello-" Her soft voice called, carefully tilting her head.

 --------------------------------

Kamali's ear flicked slightly, catching the female's soft hello. His tail began to wag and he he turned slightly. "Hello there." He replied, when he spotted the female just ahead. His walk slowed further and he approached with slight cautioun. Was she watching the sunset as well? Obviously he did not realize she was blind at first.

"I'm surprised to find anyone out here." His voice was soft as well, friendly and kind.

Beach going is for good going is for cold. O:

It was a cold, windy day in late January, although it was not snowing and the skies were clear. But even in the inlet bays leading from the sea, winter held the wild water in its grasp. Portions of the bay were frozen, sparsely crashed and floated by small ice chunks which occasionally bumped into one another, sending a tremor throughout the rolling waves. Occasionally the water brought onshore the unsteady ice, and it rolled against the smooth stone bottom of the shore and finally came to rest, and slowly melt underneath the sun.

It had taken quite a few days travel to get this far east. It required leaving the small lake which the pair wolves were slowly calling their own, or his own, for Ryoku didn't have much say in the matter. It was an area of land both intended fully on returning to, but for now, the black creature found himself of the peculiar interest in finding out exactly how far his travels had taken him. When he had left home from the far north-west, the ocean to their side had been a fifty day journey according to the talk of the lones who had frequented the area. Now, a year out of his way and so far estranged, he found himself looking over the mouth of the other sea, far to the east. How far had life taken him? Or was it really so far at all?

He had heard the ocean was viewable better down South, but there were also rumors of a large wolf occupying those regions. And although as great and powerful as he did view himself, Phib was of a more subdued nature, and did not wish to intrude upon the territory of wolves he would soon be in dealings with. So the bay would do for now- he really did not need to see any more.

For Ryoku, it might as well have been the sea. She ran ahead of Phib, scampering blindly from the tree line, and slipping on the smooth black stones which covered the beach in place of sand. He watched steadily as she ran about, running straight to the ocean before running back in surprise, tripping, and doing the whole matter of foolery all over again.

He walked past her, his large black form oddly contrasting against the smooth black stones. They shifted uneasily into the mud beneath them as he stepped, and occasionally he found himself loosing his footing as well. "Don't go anywhere." He spoke roughly as he corrected his position, and began to slowly walk down the beach.

Ryoku, ankle deep into the water, splashed off into the direction he had gone, although not realizing he was walking, the pale silver wolf continued running. Phib watched her go, swinging his tail slowly and peering at the water. With each shift of the tide, the water ran in between the cracks of the stones, bubbling at his feet and chilling his bones.

He heard a sputter. "It's being salty!" Ryoku's voice traveled faintly, for now she was pulling herself back on the small black stones about thirty feet down.

"Yes." He called, his head turning to the see. "That'd be why it's called salt water-" The long creature remarked steadily.

 -------------------------

The smell was unfamiliar to her. The biting, fresh, salty taste that seemed to surround her was like nothing she had ever expirienced. Following her meeting with Ran she had decided to continue down the river, oposite in direction from the mountains she claimed to have wanted to visit. As she had traveled, for many days, she had found the landscape steadily changing to a more uniform height, not so many hills and valleys as before.

The salty smell was an anomoly to her, there had been no seas and no bays where she had lived, the slight tinge in the water was confusing her. Other wolves would tell you that rivers led to seas, and that is the way it worked, but she hadn't known that, and so when she finaly bame within sight of the vast body of water she had been shocked. It was lively and pulsing, birds called from all about, scaring her own shadow into following quite closely.

In fact, the smell was so foreign and strong that she didn't even notice the other wolves until they were within sight. Pausing uncertainly, she strained her nose against the smell which would never grow duller to her, trying to reach the scent of the wolves above the fishy smell. She didn't succeed, but she did recognize one of the wolves by the slight echo of his voice and by his form. It was Phib, the wolf she had first met in the forrest. He had told that foolish wolf that the coast was cold, and that's where she assumed she was, for the wind was cutting.

Deciding that Phib probably wouldn't try to eat her, she started moving again, when she thought she was close enough she called out loudly, "Greetings Phib!" and hoped for the best.

 -------------------

Days. Weeks. How long had it been since the male had begun his tread into the future? He was uncertain, but one thing he was sure of, was that this place was unfamiliar to him. Different. Odd. Nomatter, this didn't disturb him. What he was more concerned of was the aroma. Strange scents lingered through the air, sounds of slowly swaying waters coming from not far off.

Birds playing their songs in the mid-day air, Fute wandered how they could even survive in such cold conditions. Of course perhaps it was the fact that he felt somewhat colder personally, having not eaten a bite since his departure from the sight where drama had taken place between him and his now seemingly ex mate. Maybe he didn't want to admit it, but he really would miss her a lot. Not in that way any longer, but honestly. He would.

Curiosity compelling him to go forward, he finally edged closer and closer to the sound of the sea until he came into full view, the most ghastly smell consuming his muzzle, the sand covered in what appeared to be black stones of some sort. Carefully stepping out onto the surface of it all, soon what came into view caused him to c**k an eyebrow. Oh? What was this? Two wolves. Oh look, and, ... another?

The third of the three had just called out to one of the others, using the name 'Phib'. "Well, that's one down." he chuckled. His new outlook on life led him to gaining observational skills. Ones that told him it was better to watch from afar than to get ahead of one's self and risk endangerment. Especially seeing as he was alone, and this was new territory. Not to mention all these wolves were strangers.

Lowering his body to the chilled ground, a slight tingle went through his spine. For now, he'd just keep an eye on the others.

 ----------------------------

Another wave rolled onshore, and the pale silver creature began to flounder about in the small drift of water. It was miserably cold, but never before had she felt such a sensation of moving water. It was strong enough to shove her down almost, and she had to quickly move back and forth between the water and the shore to increase her tolerance to the cold. Her dumb eyes could not comprehend what such a large amount of water looked like, but her sense of smell was overwhelmed with the scent of salt. Salt permeated the air in such a way that she could even taste it when she breathed.

She had yet to have her fill of the bay water, but for the moment the chill was too overwhelming. Quivering like crumpled leaf, she spun around in circles, giving a pitiful yip when she realized that the salt had so confounded herself that she couldn't even tell the direction Phib had gone to. A few yards away, he raised his head, and responded with a light 'uuff' whine, and she quickly scurried along the shore towards him. He appeared to be going for a walk, rather then settling himself down, and the pale omega hoped he wasn't thinking of moving on already.

Phib snorted as she arrived, slightly arcing his tail as the small wolf ran beside him, and pressed her tiny frame against his. She was wet, and the sudden pressing cold even brought a shiver to him, as she rubbed herself against him. She had been a bit more affectionate then usual as of late, and it was likely that many of the woods females were feeling the same mannerisms that she did. He certainly didn't mind it, although like all things Ryoku, eventually she ran out of Phib, and fell over in a comical fashion. He chuckled slightly and shook his head, before lowering it to see what was about.

The omega's head swung upwards, and she snorted pleasantly. Her dead eyes peered about where she thought he was, and he was about to say something before Ryoku turned her head, and gently added- "Someone is coming." Exactly how she had come upon that knowledge was lost to Phib, although he did imagine the constant darkness had somewhat heightened her hearing.

He turned his head, and noticed another silver creature in the distance, padding along the stone and mud. It was still a bit far for him to recognize the She, but upon a few more moments, the female called out to him by name. It was quite a surprised, being addressed in such a place, and he quirked his brow and carefully trotted a couple of yards forward. Ryoku stayed behind, opting instead to roll on the smooth stones.

The large wolf shifted, his pale green eyes focusing on the female. In his life he'd met so many wolves that sometimes it was hard to tell who had come and who had gone as of recent- but it only took a few moments to bubble back the memory of the two vagabonds and the fallen elk, and the strange male who had taken to seducing the young female. "Hello there, Hati." He rumbled when she was close enough, keeping his stance rather still. "Hopefully not on an outing with Cheveyo." He remarked with a slight pleasant smirk.

Ryoku on the shore, flicked her ears upwards and pulled herself up. The scent of salt was overwhelming, but another faint smell was catching her attention from the west. Was another wolf hanging about, besides this other She?

 -------------------------

Hati came a bit closer, studying Phib and his companion. The other wolf, who was so small it had to have been a female, seemed rather endearing to Hati, for to her she seemed to act almost like a pup. Her markings were also beautiful, although there was something wrong with her eyes. She turned her eyes back to the large Phib, and wondered if he, who had seemed almost stern the last time they had met, could have had such an adorable, seemingly lighthearted mate. No need to jump to conclusions though, she thought as she came within talking distance of Phib, she had heard of less comical misunderstandings before.

At his greeting, she returned his smirk equaly, and responded with a quick and stinging, "I think he was more into you, to tell you the truth," her eyebrows raising slightly, keeping her voice relatively light. She was quite a bit less heavy feeling since she had entered the woods, and so she was no longer nervous of every wolf she met.

"I hope I find you well," she added, and then looked at the sea, "I take it this was the coast the fool was speaking of? I have never seen one before myself."

 ------------------------------

The only movement of life was the overhead flyers, or so it seemed to the male. Yet, he found himself slightly distracted, surveying the surroundings as if the location were a pedastal of glory. Meanwhile the others' voices echoed just slightly through his head. He'd never encountered such a blissful and serene mood from other places. In the same token, he'd never really felt the same since...well... His mind came to a halt. "Wake up and shake yourself out of dazing, damnit!"

Oops. He'd just realized oh too late that his voice had blurted out medium to loudly. For sure he'd just given away his position, his being there. Not that his scent hadn't possibly already given them some indication of another wolf out and about.

Pausing and sighing, his view shifted back over to the three as their conversation had just been continuing on. Rising to his feet, he slowly began to urge up to them, stumbling a few times for reasons unknown to himself. "My balance must be highly off today." he whispered to himself. "Along with everything else, heh..." When finally a few feet away from the others, he stopped. Unwanting to interrupt or intrude upon their gathering, he stood still, only trying to maintain a look to show he'd mean them no harm. "Please pardon the disturbance I've caused, if any. Do go ahead." He held a serious yet inviting tone. They had seemed friendly enough besides; maybe they'd all become good acquaintances?

 -----------------

A breeze flushed by, pulling against the fur of the large creature's frame, and he found himself retiring to a sit. His tail quirked once or twice, before allowing a low chuckle to rumble in his frame. It wasn't too often that his snarks were returned back to him, and he decided he did not mind this female all too much. When he'd first met her, he hadn't been sure if she was afraid of him or simply angry at the world. She seemed a bit more light hearted now, and despite his stern disposition, he was most unfortunately a softy.

"I see," He remarked with the same amused expression. "Ah-, well that would be my own fault for being transversally attractive," The black wolf chuckled. "We are well, and yes and no." The wolf rumbled, his voice still steady and a bit stiff, but generally lighter then usual. He turned his head to the direction of the horizon, which was now actually apparent from the water. "The coast is a bit down south, but this bay leads directly there." His nose craned directly ahead. There was a small strip of land breaking the bay into two, but past that was open ocean- although it was faint in the blue haze. "Just off there is the sea."

If he was intending to say anything more, it was caught up by the sudden voice of another wolf in the distance. "Well, you seem to have come with someone..." Phib remarked to Hati, and shifted his head to see where it was coming from. It was a male's voice, and his large tapered ears arched to catch it.

Ryoku, who had been first considering the idea of another wolf about and had been carefully walking around the shifting stones, quickly took a few steps back when the voice echoed. It seemed a bit angry at first, and her dead eyes widened, and she nervously pranced about. The large black brute caught her hesitation, and he snorted slightly. It would only be when the other male showed himself, that he let himself settle down a bit.

This new arrival did not appear to be aggressive, despite the sharp remark before. He seemed to carefully pad up, conscious of their prior conversation, and apologized. Never being one to take apologies lightly, he dipped his blocky head, and did not rise to domineer. "Hello there." He rumbled, his voice thick in his throat. Ryoku used her mate's familiar voice as a marker, and hobbled over to where the group was. She had not as of yet spoken to either of them, and this time, she made a commitment to doing so-

"Hello-" Her voice said softly to both of them, and the small wolf could only attempt to imagine in what direction the creatures stood. "Strange to be of seeing so many about. How are you both?" She said with a slight chuckle, her ears folding backwards, reminding those unaware of lower ranking. "I am Ryoku."

 ------------------------

"I see," she answered, following his gaze. The male seemed okay with her being totaly snarky, so she was much more relaxed. She wondered if she might go to the coast, then realized that the obnoxious mint male was over there, and wrinkled her muzzle in distaste.

At the other wolves cry she perked her ears in interest, "I am traveling with no one," she said quietly, watching him aproach.

"Hello," Hati greeted, studying him for a moment, before noticing that the other wolf, the silvery girl, was coming to join them. She was kind of ackward, and Hati was sure that she must have been blind. Despite this, she greeted them in a cute fashion, her speach pattern making it very odd to Hati.

"Ryoku? I'm sure you heard, but I am Hati," she said brightly.

 -------------------

The first wolf to greet him was a rather dark male. He figured it must be that 'Phib' character after hearing the others distinguish themselves as Ryoku and Hati. Ryoku....Hati....Phib.... such unique and yet such unusual names these were to the male. Then again, just exactly who's name wasn't unique nowadays?

"Hello all." He took a moment before continuing to shift his weight down and switch into a sitting position. "My name is Fute. It's nice to meet you." He was always rather fond of the other male wolves; he held much respect where he deemed it due. Thusly he'd proceed with caution on Phib's behalf... Just until he was sure of where he stood in the line. Obviously he felt sort of the odd one out. The extra wheel, if you will.

Ryoku herself seemed rather significantly smaller than Phib, and from the way she was holding herself, it was clear to Fute that she must be an omega. This didn't bother him, though. He just liked to make distinct notations about things wherever he went. It was just who he was. Giving her a onceover once more, he figured her absolutely no threat. The other femme, however, Hati, he was unaware of her rank. Really however, did ranks matter all too much? To him they sortof did, and yet this wasn't some sort of pack meeting, so it was a difficult call.

Deciding to drop the whole plot of ideas and give due respect instead, he allowed full attention to turn towards the others for the umpteenth time. It was then that his stomach began to rumble. Pretty soon he would have to get a bite to eat, but it would be shameful to cut out on this occurance simply as a result of hunger. I can wait until nightfall to find a small bite to full me over til' morning. His thoughts reassured him, and he managed to ignore his bodily whims for the time being.

 ---------------------

Ryoku's soft face peeled into a smile, and she gently allowed her tail to twist back and forth. Like always, it was up to herself to mentally picture the two wolves before her. She imagined the one who addressed himself as Fute to be a more gentler sort, because Phib had not rose and did the whole, 'I'm boss' routine which so frequently set her at ends. She didn't like when there was tension in a group. In fact, just the thought of it caused her to pant slightly, and her tail stopped wriggling.

Hati on the other hand had greeted Phib outright, so she figured the other female was of a more domineering sort. She couldn't tell though- and she did seem pleasant, so it did not worry her all too much. She would learn later, that in terms of looks, she was also a grey with small blue markings crissed about her frame, while the other was a pale blonde and littered with black flecks.

"It's nice to be meeting you." Ryoku spoke again. She whined softly in the general pleasant meeting among wolves that were not enemies, and eventually sidled herself up against Phib- less to show her connection towards him then to actually be able to figure out in what direction the others were standing in.

Phib on the other was used to addressing himself first, but the other male did not seem to carry a confused nature about his persona- perhaps he had overheard his name stated before. He certainly had not heard the wolf's name before however, and he dipped his head in regards to it. Despite his typically stern nature, he was rather pleasant. "Good evening then, Fute. Do you take a habit of yelling at trees?" He remarked, although in the way he had said it, it was less of a 'poking-fun-at-him', then trying to find out what had caused his outburst before.

Ryoku, shyly, wagged her tail and let Phib do most of the talking. Which wasn't much up for debate, since Phib already did that.

 -------------------

Ah, so they were mates, stranger things had happened, she supposed. The little silver was very polite, and she seemed generaly pleased to meet them. Her actions commanded none of the respects of Phibs, who was currently questioning the other wolf, Fute.

He was a bit of a strange one, aparenly he hadn't been yelling at them, so maybe he was just as crazy as the rest of the wolves around here. Like she was one to talk. She watched the blond male for a moment, before turning her attentions back to the bay. It was a really pleasant veiw, she figured the water must have been absolutely frigid though. There were birds and small shiney white things sprinkles about, and the water pulsed as she had never seen any water do before. The smell was still getting to her though...

A flap behind her alerted her to the bird, so she turned a bit away from the wolves, walking a few paces off. The bird landed near her, fluffing unhappily in the prescence of the other wolves and Avians, glaring at her.

"Don't whine, I won't let them eat you," she said, annoyed.

 -----------------

The spotted male chuckled at Phib's questioning. Sure it wasn't meant to be comical, but nonetheless it sparked a slight sense of amusement in the male, and even brought about a bit of a smirk to grace his maw for a split second before he responded. Oh, well yes, of course. Don't you? This was what he'd wanted to say, maybe if just to try and lighten the air a bit furtherly. Yet still, it prevailed that Phib had been serious with his query, so Fute would need to be clear with his response.

"Actually, I just had dazed off a bit, and found myself correcting myself." He only realized how truly crazy he had come off as at that second after it was too late and the words had already escaped his mouth. "Times have been a bit rough lately, tis' all..." Hopefully his continuation would clear up any sudden confusion or suspicions of eccentricity. He'd leave it at that; he didn't know them too well yet, and wasn't one to blabber entirely about his past to near about strangers.

Orbs turned to meet Hati taking a few steps back, answering apparently the fright of a bird. He wondered how something so insignificant as a small winged creature's fright could inspirit annoyance into her veins. Raising an eyebrow towards her direction, he glanced for a moment in curiosity before circling back to Phib, who seemed to be dominant in the realm of talking, out of all the three.

That Ryoku....she's certainly the shy one... She much reminds me of Whisper, how she was when I'd first met her... Hmm... It was obvious the two were mates, and there was no spark of interest in her like that. Rather, he'd always merely been a wolf unliking of people to fear him, even if the fear's formation took itself on as shy for a being. Allowing his eyes to remain fixated upon the male, as he felt it always proper to maintain eye contact with whomever you were speaking to, he carefully swooped a playful paw towards the femme in prodding. Maybe if he showed himself to be truly friendly, she'd come out, and talk more.

In which it's a good thing Ryoku isnt out to get people XD.

It was an oddly brisk day, and the skittering wind did well to unsettle the wolf's pale grey coat. But despite the cool weather, Ryoku, was on a mission.

To say that a predominantly blind wolf could really be on a mission or not was up for debate, for the thing she was after she couldn't exactly see. But then again, this was just one of the considerably bizarre things the young female could be charged with doing, and she supposed in the long run it did not much matter.

She had taken to sticking close to home ever since the blizzard incident, but ever since Phib had gotten itchy feet again, Ryoku found herself feeling less and less inclined to stay in a static location. So pleasantly desiring something to drink, the pale grey wolf found herself leaving the unknowing brute alone to sleep, and head off in the first random direction that appealed to her. The treck was a careful one of course, consisting in many stops- a couple of which she didn't plan, when her nose connected sharply with a tree, but for the most part she managed to keep herself at least on some semblance of a path.

'Hrm...' She thought, her white tipped ears swinging forward. 'Where would water be being?' Her disjointed words uttered, and she squinted her dead eyes as if it made a difference. Perhaps it did, if only for her mentality's sake. They had been staying a bit by the coast as of recent, but that brine water was not for the drinking, that was for sure.

She skittered forward, narrowly missing a fallen pine, and coming slowly to a stop. The area she had reached encompassed a large, snow fallen field. The area now blank of landmarks worried her, and she stopped for a moment to catch her breath.

 -------------------------------------------

Taima had been out on the same mission as the other female, though she had come from a completely different location and direction. And she wasn't leaving anyone behind... well, not really.

The red, black, and partially yellow male had been Tai's first and only friend since her arrival in these lands. She had found him good company, but once they had wandered apart--or rather the female away from him in her never-ending quest to satisfy her curiousity--she found that she didn't really need him there all the time.

And she hadn't run into any more trees!! Perhaps since she wasn't running this way and that frantically trying to find him, the omega was able to keep herself safe and completely unharmed.

Of course, there was still that old wound of her bruised ribs.. but they would heal in time. And while waiting for that amount of time to expire, Taima came upon the same field as Ryoku. Being an odd color, she stood out, but didn't much care. So what if someone found her? However, she didn't even think there were wolves who occupied this area.

So she was completely oblivious and ignorant as she padded forth softly, heading in the other female's direction without so much as realizing it, the wind blowing the wrong way for her to really tell.

 ---------------------------------------------

One step, two step... Still nothing. Ryoku pulled back with a slight flinch, and her tail rose in question as she skipped about and tried to figure out which direction she was heading into. Sure, she didn't like knocking her nose against trees, but she felt it was very reassuring in comparison to...well...- this blankness...

But still, being a jovial creature, Ryoku did not let the fact that she was slowly heading off into the gaping mouth of oblivion get her down. She continued to trot forward, sure that eventually she'd have to hit water, or Phib would come and drag her back home. She didn't really move all that fast, and even now she was only half a mile away.

She was a sensitive creature however, and when the other omega slowly became noticeable within the field, she felt her body suddenly go ridged as the sounds of footsteps flooded across her ears. She shifted and took a few bouncing steps, her eyes wide, dumb, but mostly gentle, and her gait airy. "Hello? Who's being around?" She called, scampering.

 ----------------------------------------------

Taima, just as oblivious and unaware as the other, continued on through the snow. One wouldn't have thought she could see if they saw her reaction to the sudden appearance of a voice, what with the way she seemed totally shocked to find someone else here. Yet they probably would have found it funny:

The young wolf tensed her body and even fell backward a bit, stumbling over the snow and not caring whether she ruined its beauty or not at this point. Her eyes were wide with fear as she looked this way and that, trying to find the source of the random voice. Finding none within a minute, Tai instantly grew worried. What if they pounced her out of no where? What if they killed her!!

Fearing that this might be the case, the omega whined quite loudly and rolled onto her back, her eyes shut tightly.

"It wasn't me! It wasn't meeeee!"

 ---------------------------------------------

'It wasn't meee!' Suddenly caught Ryoku's ears, and the grey creature tilted her head to the side, and found herself slowly swaying her tail.

"What wasn't of being you?" Her voice called out again from the snowy field, and she decided to move forward somewhat in the direction she believed the noise to be. Following her sounds were not all that difficult however, for all her writhing on the snow made a very interesting 'smoosh-smoosh' sound, which caught the corners of the female's angled ears.

She came to a stop just about five feet from the other creature, stepping out from behind snow covered grasses, still stuck in the process of dying and being trapped by frost. Even as she moved, they popped off like icicles. Her eyes squinted together precariously, and wondering if perhaps she was on the scene of some horrible attack, she began to dance about.

"Is someone being after you?" Ryoku squeaked, and turned her head. "Is someone over there, yes?" The grey squirmed.

 --------------------------------------------

Taima wiggled some more before finally stopping and peering up. It didn't seem like anyone was attacking her, not anyone at all!! Snuffing slightly and trying to brush the event off like it never happened, she rolled onto her paws.

Yet she still had some snow on her head and back, so she looked oddly like some broken wolf snowman. Not really minding, however, since she couldn't see her reflection, she finally looked around and noticed Ryoku standing there. Hmph. She didn't look too harmful... and that was good enough for Tai!

Suddenly she brightened up and lifted her head even more, causing some snow to fall of in a large clump and alarm the female once it hit the ground. But a moment later she was looking back up at the other, wagging her tail like they were good-time friends or something.

"No, no one's after me.. I thought you were, but now I see that yer not! And it's just me... no one really follows me around." That might have bummed some others, not having company and all of that stuff, but it didn't seem to bother her!

And it appeared as if the snow-covered omega hadn't even noticed by now that the other was blind.

 --------------------------------------------

Ryoku listened as the other female got herself up from the snow, although the sound of it suddenly slumping off of her did bring her back somewhat in surprise. She blinked a few times, before squeaking and skittering a careful circle around the other female- or at least, what she thought was a circle, for it ended up a little more banana shaped. Luckily- neither of the females really knew what a banana looked like anyways.

"Oh!" She uttered. "I am not being after you." She stopped, and considered this for a second. No, she was perfectly sure she was not- although being a wolf who believed quite a bit in fate, she couldn't say for sure if she was after this female or not. It was a bit confusing. "I don't think I am being, anyways. I am Ryoku- I was looking for water." She said softly with a chuckle, her gentle face slipping into a smile.

"Do people normally attack randomly of you?" She questioned, her head shifting to the other side. Her tail shifted about in happy shakes, as she realized just how pleased she was to hear another creature's voice in all this blankness of the field.

 -------------------------------------------

"Oh, well that's a relief!" Taima replied chipperly, plopping her rump right back down into the snow. It was really relaxing to have someone to talk to who wouldn't make fun of you or try to kill you, really it was!!

"And... oh.. uh... well, no, actually.. they don't. But I don't like to be vulnerable and everything all of the time... I don't want to die, ya know." It was funny, how much of a pup she could have sounded like. If it wasn't for the fact that she had the smell of a mature female--although not mentally mature--and was the size of one, someone might have thought her a mere pup!

Then her mind flicked back to the name that had been presented before her. Ryoku.. "Ryoku," she murmured, doing her normal habit of repeating the name aloud.

"Well, that's a silly name. But then so is mine, I guess. I'm Taima."

Her tail sped up a bit as she shifted a tad closer to the other. Already she felt like this one would be another of her good friends.

"Water? Oh, well, if ya wanted water, I know where a bunch is!!"

 -------------------------------------------

The pale wolf smiled and chuckled lightly, not minding much that her name sounded silly to the other female's ears. "It's being a boys name, my father said." She remarked. "I used to be called Fourth though, and that's much sillier." Her tail swayed gently, as if thoughts of her bizarre family situation brought her nothing but joy. And perhaps in some odd way, it did. "It's nice to meet you, Taima."

To the second part, she felt herself shake her head a few times, her ears gently flattening against her head. Even though the nature of this wolf seemed to suggest a friendly creature, she made sure not to express herself as dominant. "No, I don't think I'd like to be dying either. I'd say that would ruin a day."

"...Water?" She perked, suddenly remembering why she had left her slumbering mate and gone on her mission of perpetual blind-doom. (And, possibly the exact words an angry Phib would later use in scolding her.) "Oh! If you could be showing me, I'd be very happy." She squeaked, and hopped about gently, her tail thrushing.

She liked this female. Inwardly, the part of her which was questionably of wiser qualities, (although to what extent would always remain a mystery), she enjoyed the female's pleasant mannerisms and amiable nature. She didn't like bitter creatures, unless they were Phib, and she knew half the time he was bitter just for the sake of being bitter.

 Missing Appendages (P. II)

Taima cocked her head slightly. Was this wolf speaking the truth, about her name being a boy's and all? How strange! Her parents must have hit their head on something or other when they were in the process of naming her.

"A boy's name?" she asked, allowing her thoughts to come out of her mouth. Then, "Fourth?!" Wow... her parents were really weird, naming a child that. But then it would probably make sense if they weren't able to think of names for each pup right away but still had to have a system of calling each one without any confusion.

"So you were the fourth pup?" she asked, actually using her brain and putting two and two together.

Then, when the other mentioned that she would love for Tai to take her to the water source, the omega was happy to help. Rising to her paws excitedly with her tail wagging, she yipped then spoke out: "Follow me then!"

....She still hadn't noticed that Ryoku was blind.

 ------------------------------

The small wolf chuckled softly, her ears flattening against her head. Her family situation was always a strange one, and she had stopped mostly trying to explain it. As far as father number one was concerned, her name had been, and still was, Fourth. Her sisters followed suit- First, Second, and Third- although the latter two were dead, and it was up to debate on the First. It left little Fourth to decide on her own state of living- although Father two had renamed her Ryoku mostly out of spite. Phib had added his own spiel of strange names for her, ranging from, "Damnit Woman," to "Amarette."

She found herself laughing a little bit at this, and taking a cautious step forward, she remarked- "It's being alright, named Ryoku. Better then some of the names my mate has come up with." She nodded softly. "Yes, I was the fourth pup of the litter. My other sisters were named First, Second, and Third. But you must be forgiving my father- it was hard to tell us apart."

Taima began to squeak and head off partially in one direction with an urging for her to follow. Ryoku smiled gently and wagged her tail, and spoke again- "You'll have to walk close to me so I know what direction we're going in. My eyes, they're not always being so good, yes?" She blinked her dead eyes, and apparently found her state more amusing then pathetic.

 --------------------------------

Taima nodded to all of this, completely understanding despite her puppy IQ. It was completely understandable, even thought back home the situation wasn't quite like that. Her siblings had been so differently colored that who the actual father of the litter was had always been in question. Plus, she was a runt and therefore could have been easily separated from the rest by size if not by color or markings.

"Oh, well, I was third born in my litter... also the last." She made a somewhat awkward face. It had always be really crappy, being the youngest and all. No one ever really believed in her... or believed her about anything she said.

"But I wasn't named third. Just Runt. I had to lead a hunt to earn the name that I have now." She nodded then puffed out her chest slightly, even if Ryoku couldn't see the proud stance. But the pose began to hurt so she melted back down into her original one.

And she was about to break into a steady trot when her new 'buddy' said that she'd have to walk close to the grayish female because her eyes didn't quite work anymore. How sad!

Immediately Tai trotted back towards Ryoku, ending up at her side with their shoulders touching. "Better?" she asked, not really minding if she'd have to go slow or anything.

For one who acted so much like a pup, it was amazing how much patience she had.

 ----------------------------------

A soft breeze fluttered across the bridge of Ryoku's snout, and she nodded her head in approval. "That will do fine." She could normally keep up a rather brisk pace without faltering- traveling with her rather high tensioned mate had well trained her in anticipating movements, just as long as she was close enough to feel the direction of the other's movements.

Although her eyes showed no change, her face softened affectionately. She had never suffered much from being called the runt, but she had been never accepted well into her adopted family. Although she supposed as fate would have it, being with them was what saved her from growing up with her other awkward family. It was disappointing to hear that people could be cruel- for in her mind she believed above all things the capability for goodness in all things. Even the evil ones, she believed could be capable of good. And even she, who had seen so much and lost her sight forever, she couldn't let go of that desire. "You did good to be showing them you are important." Ryoku smiled, although she could only feel Taima straighten up in a proud posture. "What did you hunt?" The female asked, her face gentle.

Ryoku took one step forward to imply she could walk and speak at the same time, although it was true that to do both she'd need to move at a slightly slower pace then what she was capable of.

 ---------------------------------------

Taima smiled warmly at the other female, despite knowing now that the other could not see it. She had become quite attached to this one, much like she had Tristan. Wolves around here seemed much nicer than the ones back home. And for an instant she wondered why. Was it the food?

No matter, though.. there was no need to linger in the past. She had left them and was never going back, so why should she think about them? There was no reason to, and so she just shook her head and focused on the present time and goal: taking her new friend to a water source.

Takin the other's hint that she could walk and talk at the same time, Tai began forward, thought not a too swift a pace. It wasn't slow, but it wasn't exactly fast either. She just settled for what felt like a good, medium-paced walk. Hopefully Ryoku wouldn't have too much trouble.

"Whatever I could find. But it had to be something big... no rabbits or anything." Sighing as she continued on, the female remembered back when she had been attempting to prove herself. In the end, she was only given a name because everyone was sick of her trying to impress the rest of them all the time.

"I went for an ox. But it was too strong and healthy for me. So I just chased something else. I caught a deer later on. But they still didn't give me my name. They thought I had cheated. CHEATED! Do you see any way that I could have cheated on hunting?" She sure couldn't find a way that that was possible.

"Then I went after some other thing, I forget what it was now, and I stepped in a hunter's trap. I was quick then, so I only lost two pads instead of my whole paw.." The omega stopped momentarily to lift up her front right paw, the one with the two missing pads. Of course, Ryoku couldn't see so she didn't know what on earth she had done that for.

"They eventually just gave me my name because I wouldn't stop buggin' them, they say. They thought I was trying to show off by saying that I had survived a human trap and only lost a couple of pads."

The female suddenly stopped again. The memory was painful... they hadn't believed her, even if she had been bleeding profusely all over the place.

 "They were meanie butts."

 --------------------------------------------

The silver wolf frowned thoughtfully, her ears shifting as she considered the kind of wolves Taima had lived with. It was a very hard confliction for Ryoku, who did truly love everyone, to both love and dislike what could happen to a wolf's behavior when made cruel and mean.

But she listened politely to Taima's story, her face intent on listening, although she also had to be sure she kept up with her pace and did not loose her way. At first this was awkward, but after only a few moments she had managed to keep the pace up to Taima's speed, and she was listening with little problem. She was impressed that Taima had tried to take down an ox- not even Phib did stuff like that! It didn't occur to her that it might have shown badly on the other female's intelligence, but she inverted and took it as a sign of bravery. And to do so much to impress cruel people... she wished they had not been cruel. It didn't seem fair that they had been.

She made a soft noise as Taima went to mention her toe pads, which was quite surprising to Ryoku. The female stopped a moment, although Ryoku did not know what for- although she gathered that the other female might have been showing her the missing toe padding. She supposed she could have added in her own story about her wounded eyes- because, did it really get old mentioning that your sister commanded your delusional father to pop your eyes out? It was getting a bit tiring for Ryoku however, who decided to keep that little bit of information to herself. It wasn't exactly a pleasant story- but neither was Taima's. In fact, it made her feel a bit worse. No one had actually laughed over her eyes getting gouged out, and she could only imagine what being injured and rebuked would be like.

"That's being very miserable, Taima." She squeaked, and shook her head. "Does it hurt much to be walking?"

She shook her head again. "It was wrong that they forced you to earn a name."

 --------------------------------------------------------

Taima shrugged slightly at the other's sympathy then continued on in the direction of the water she had seen earlier. It really wasn't all that bad, her being forced to earn a name. It was just a custom that had been in that pack for decades. Every wolf had to do something extraordinary to earn a good name. It had just been unlucky for her that she had been born a runt--that of which the pack seemed to hate.

Yet it might have been an incredibly lucky event for her. If it hadn't been for her packmates' cruel ways, she might not have moved out here and met such wonderful wolves. Instead, she might have had to deal with all of that nasty behavior for the rest of the life. And thinking back on it now, that option didn't much appeal to her.

"Hm, not really," she replied easily to Ryoku. "I mean, if it gets too cold it kinda freezes up and gets all stiff.. then it's hard to walk on it. And if I walk over some sticks that prefer to n** at me than just lay on the ground like good little things, then my paw hurts then. But other than that... no."

She smiled slightly as she continued on. She was curious about the other's eyes, but for once she felt that she should keep her curiousity questions under control.

Even though the omega didn't mind sharing her past, she felt for once that others might not feel quite as open as herself. And so she decided that she wouldn't ask.

In which Ryukkii psycho-babbles. A lot.

And so, with a full belly, the decaying creature found herself back on the top of the food chain, and it was simply intoxicating to be there.

It was a snowy night, for she had slept in a quiet rot most of the day. It was perhaps the most complete sleep she had received in over a month, and she had swallowed up as much of the sleep as she could. It had been the sleep of the dead, for rarely was she burdened with dreams. Perhaps it was because her daytime hours were so flooded with them, that she dreamed of nothing but blackness. Perhaps it was some sort of foreboding of her grave, for even now, her twisted and maligned flesh throbbed her side with bitter agony.

But Ryukkii had become a bit of a masochist since birth, and although the pain was vexing, she was not unaccustomed to it. And she had developed a sort of apathy about her constantly dying state- a kind of trait only attributed with those carrying such a terminal condition such as hers. She was wicked yes- but she was no fool, and she was ever the ironic optimist. In her concerns, at least. And although it might have seemed that one such as her would currently be hashing out some maniacal plot or something to the similar matter, she found herself contemplating whether or not the food she had just eaten would be giving her a stomach ache later on. And she would, but it was besides the point, for she busied her mind with considering it at length.

 ---------------------------------

At night, he was hardly visible. Far away or right infront of you, it made no difference. There was that faint blue highlight to his fur that kept that 'hardly' from becoming 'not at all'. Still, that glimmer of color wasn't enough to keep an eye on him in most cases.

Knowing that, he may seem intimdating, but Retsu was nothing to fear. Everything he did seemed automatic, programmed, pure instinct: eat, sleep, keep warm, drink. Not nesscarily in that order. Though he could've been quite an opponent on a night lacking much moonlight, he had no interest in causing trouble.

Truthfully, many claimed he had no interest in anything. No interest, pity, or feelings. He was the Heartless, and with that title he lived. His senses were dull, perhaps from age? Whatever it was, not until he was close enough to get a good look at her did he really notice Ryukkii.

 Hm...

 ------------------------------

Ryukkii yawned, and felt a kind of weight upon the girth of her forepaws. Was the blood in them churning so that it caused them to ache? She snorted somewhat, and lifted the end of her inky black nose, revealing a moon-white set of teeth- although her left fang was missing. She let the cold winter air circulate around her gums and nose before taking another breath and freezing her lungs- before finally expelling it and resolving herself to one abridged comment- someone wandered in the night.

At once she rose, almost as if she floated herself up. Although really- she was a small wolf, and it hadn't taken much effort. Slowly she turned, her burned side cringing at the movement before she rounded her position and sat, fiddling a low grin upon her knife narrow muzzle. Her one workable eye slanted slowly about before it caught the unmistakenable shape of a pair of yellow eyes hanging like dots in the vacant air. The pink scarred eye followed suit, and she leveled them upon the creature.

Truthfully- she had never seen a creature so dark as this. Perhaps it was death? Ah- but she had so much more to do. Another slow grinned pulled across her rotting form, and she spoke forward- "And who wanders in my midst, shadow?" Her voice, ironically soft for one such as her, fell upon the silence of the night. It carred a kind of sharpness beneath the gentle tone, but the implications only wavered in her pronounciations. She waited with interest to see the response. Who was this fool? Such wolves in these woods! They came towards the scent of death like vultures.

 ---------------------------------

"For one expecting death, I am a dissapointment," Retsu answered her flatly. Maybe, at least to some level, he was 'heartless'. But, like her, he was no fool. Surely one in that condition was expecting the everlasting darkness soon. She didn't seem to fear the thought, from her tone. But then, you could never tell what he truly felt (if anything) from his, so he wasn't so quick to judge. "To others my name is Retsu."

Each spilt second he blinked, the wolf became completely invisible to those with even the keenest of eyes. "You smell wretched," he told her, tone unchanging. Well, someone certainly had no problem with honesty...

 ----------------------------

Ryukkii chuckled lowly in her throat. Good then- there would be none of this whorish playing around. She did so dislike when others pad-footed around her, as if she was not wretched. Perhaps they thought her the blind one?

Ironic he knew what was on her thoughts. This earned another notch in her twisted grin, although it was not so expressive as to be simply ridiculous. "Oh, I am sure Death may wait." Her voice rolled from her throat. "But whether or not I am there or still to come is no concern of me. I asked who wandered amongst me- not if Death wished to please me with his company." Despite the hike in her tone at the final clause, she still kept her face at a moderately light tone.

She waited as he responded his name flatly. Retsu- it sounded a bit like wretch. But she had a habit of linking words with names, and it wasn't so much based on a preoccupation with more darker thoughts. There had been those who had once call her genius- but apparently villainy trumped genius, and she had been as of recently downgraded to 'mad'. Well- she was mad alright.

Her face quirked again as to the sentiments of her scent. "Perhaps." Her voice drawled. "And perhaps you smell like little daisies- but I will try to hold my stomach."

But she wasn't just yet ready to rid herself of conversation, for she'd rather not return to that other fool just yet. He did such a nice job of pretending only half of her was real, and for this, she applauded. How disgustingly clever.

"An interesting coat, you have." Her voice drawled again, this time with a more general interest. Actually, her interest was less on his coat then on the genetic probability of it ever reoccurring. Was it a mathematical improbability? Yes, no? Interesting. "You strain my eyes to look, ironic." She quipped. She did not hold much fear towards this creature, as for despite his strange eyes, he looked not like a killer. One could retort, however, neither did she.

 --------------------------

"Then we have something in common, I suppose," he answered. If he had taken it as an insult, he was taking it awfully well. "You're quite a hiddeous thing for my eyes." While some may have found him boring within the first few minutes, others may have found him interesting for the same reasons. It wasn't often one could honestly hold the same tone of voice no matter what they said--greeting, comment, insult or otherwise--and it was something he did by nature, clearly. "You speak too much, as well."

His eyes closed for a short time. It may have helped him think, who knew? When they opened again, they seemed brighter than before. Retsu often made the eyes of others play tricks. "Your appearence is interesting, though. There are no others like you here. Not to intrude-" And not that he really cared, either. "-but have you even attempted fixing whatever it is plauging you? There are Shaman here."

 ---------------------------

Still blunt, but she did not mind it. It could border on tiresome, but as of yet it had not afflicted her. "Ah-" She remarked, her voice sliding like a worm. "Would you rather something beautiful? But as it may, I did not fashion my likeness for your like." No one in her family had been beautiful- save perhaps the ever haunting clone of a mother. Ironic, that four identical children and an identical mother could all appear so very different. And yet- fundamentally of the same mindset. (An importability- Ryukkii found.)

"Speak too much? Perhaps you listen too little." She remarked. "But I am pleased to see there are none others like me- for if they were, I might be thoroughly displeased at such imitators and clowns." She shifted her weight somewhat upon her left shoulder. It wasn't so much out of boredom as it was that she felt the need to prop herself up.

"Shamans, seers, ghosts-" She smirked. "What do I need of them? What rots me and kills me isn't what I look-" Ryukkii continued unpassionately, as if it truly was of no concern to her. As she spoke, she indicated her massive burns and scrapes as to 'what I look.' "- I have been dying since I was born. But I suppose, so have you, haven't you? And everyone else? But, I die faster because my body cares not for this world, and I cannot keep it. A worm hollows my body, and soon there will not be much left." It was the same genetic disparency which had rendered all four of the sisters barren, and afflicted- although Ryukkii none so worse, as the muscular atrophy continued to set in as time moved on. "But regardless, I'll live as long as I please, with or without the aid of shamans."

"And in the end, is there really much cure for what I am? Or what I'm not?" She rhetoriced, her ears swaying without much concern.

 ---------------------------

"Perhaps thinking too much is your issue, but I am not here to judge you. Die if you wish, live if you desire, it matters not to myself." The Heartless lifted to all fours and drew back, as if he would turn and go just then. He didn't, though, and those dull, yellow eyes did not blink for quite some time.

Be it because he had nothing better to do, or wanted more conversation, or something else, Retsu did not leave. Not yet. "I'm afraid I know of no cure for fate being against you," he answered, gaze moving sidewards. Ah, the lynx was back again. She hid almost as well as he did.

 When he wasn't trying.

 -------------------------

Her grin quirked. "You can never think too much- only for those who might not be able to fit it in the confines of their little heads." Although truthfully, it was true that this was her problem. She was simply too smart to be dying, and it had rotted her and made her think herself into such a state of manicy that one might even venture as far to say she was no longer even morally conflicted. She thought herself better then all, this was no secret. It was unfortunate then, that she had such a mind to back it up, when it could have been used for far better things.

"And as far as a cure- I don't look for one. What am I, to look for a cure? What do I need with it? You get a cure, you still die. It's all a mater of timing, and I rather like knowing my timing is always short, then not knowing what is around the corner." Ryukkii might have been amused to know that like Phib, she considered consistency to be one of the true evils of the world.

"And you-" The worm grinned somewhat like a Cheshire, and crinkled her muzzle. "You in the dark and so content- are you perhaps so half passed dead? More then I? What cure do you seek for your blatant lacking of tone? Not that I mind, I don't care much for two sided conversations. But I am interested to know, what some Death black little fool wanders alone in the dark after the smell of death, turns his back and looks to go, and moves not further from his stance? Perhaps he does not know."

 ---------------------------------

Blink. It was a first for him, being questioned that way. He'd gotten, 'You look like a freak.', 'Why do you talk that way?', 'Stay away from me.', and on many occasions he'd been flat out adressed as evil. If Death had the face of a wolf, he'd learned over-time it would be like his. Darkness was something to be feared.

"I seek nothing," was his reply. "I seek the answer to no question I can not learn merely by living. Thinking things over as you do... Waste of time, pointless. I know who I am, I know how to live, I need nothing else.

I am no fool. I am Retsu. To others I am the Heartless, the Evil, and often Death. I am what many fear more than anything: Darkness. I wander alone as there has never been one to wander with me. I step back because I wish to do so. And, you think to highly of yourself. My passing here, near you, was nothing more than chance. These are things I know, and again I say to you, I need to know nothing more."

 ---------------------------------

Again, Ryukkii was for the most part unfazed by the other wolf's counter speech, and to it, she slowly began to form a more accurate picture of this wolf. Still his voice had not changed, but she appeared to have hit a mark- he spoke more now then he had before. A knotch further in her sadistically slow grin, and her mind bubbled with strange thoughts, as if it was alternatively a different language.

"Everyone, seeks something." She stroked the end of her muzzle with her tongue. "If you seek nothing, you are dead. If you are hungry, you eat. If you are thirsty, you drink. I am amused, however, that you believe you know yourself." Her tail shifted, thin and ratty. "Do you know yourself? Or is what you know simply what you wish to know?" She rhetoriced. "Unless you can predict the future. And if you can, although it is improbable, I correct myself."

She was a bit lax as far as his naming of himself. Was he naming himself such to impress? No- that too was improbable. His tone was too flat. Perhaps he truly did not care, and she knew then that she would have no power over him. But that meant nothing, for the job of hollowing was already done on this one. Born like this? Unlikely- who's fingerprints were upon this creature? She snorted.

"People fear what they will, be it night or day or the worm in your brain." Her tail flicked. "And you, Death-" She jeered, her lips parting. "What do you fear?"

Nothing, she assumed, and she was already grinning. But she would wait and see.

 --------------------------------------------

And indeed, it would seem he truly did not care. This seemed just like something to do, something other than aimlessly moving. Maybe he was born this way, maybe not. But this way was his way, and this way he would remain until the true form of Death, if it was not him, came to sweep him, and if had one, his soul away.

"I feel no fear," he began. "Because I feel nothing." If that was because of his own doing, someone elses, or he just was that way he'd leave it up to her to think about. She certainly seemed to enjoy that. "But if I did, I know I would fear the knowledge that comes with questioning myself. I would fear being afraid. I would fear the urge to seeking something that can not be found, because if it could be, I'd have found it long ago. These things I know, I do not ponder if they are correct."

Again, he shuffled back. It seemed almost habbit to him to never turn you're back when within a certain distance. "My time with you is done," he told her, closing his eyes and fading into the darkness around them. "Think more about what you know, not about what you wish to." And then he was gone...

 Foriegn encounters

It was strange how winter was slowly growing more lax as time went on. Small clumps of snow still littered the earth in wide white splotches, which had he been human, he might have related to something like paint splatters. But what the abated snow left in view was a dull, murky brown grass, so long deprived of oxygen and sunlight that it was more mud then earth. It made the ground slightly smell, so for the day, the large black creature found himself redirecting his carefully wandering path to someplace a bit more rocky and above ground.

Phib snorted, a slight plume of mist rising from his throat. But it was a dying haze, for the temperature was treading dangerously close to when it would no longer be needed. Like most wolves, he felt himself somewhat tuned to the changing of the earth- and subsequently, he'd been a bit more docile this past week. Although it hadn't stopped him from wandering.

Presently, the long black wolf trotted up somewhat of a hill. Long and winter grayed trees clung as best they could to the rocky sides, but as far as hills went, it wasn't particularly an amazing one. As he strolled, his tail carefully bobbed besides him, his pale eyes narrowed and face set in a conflicted gaze of one who was thinking too much. He wasn't particularly agitated- although his scarred face seemed to reflect it. But he was once more falling victim to his peculiar intent of questioning things that were far beyond his range of understanding.

 ---------------------------------

Winter's end would bring about great change for the young heir and his family. Once spring was upon them he would lead a small band of wolves to the North and to the East to war with the despicable tyrrant of the Asian Jungles, also known as his father. The wolf that Kouji no longer held the endearing name "Ba-ba" for would be arrogant with the past victories of the late autumn and winter months. He thought he'd rid himself of two pests, Kouji and his mother, both of which were too proud and too soft, just as the "b***h" had raised him. He had heirs now with much greater potential, though absently he noted that none of them seemed to have the same... air, about them that the others did. It was of little consequence.

Kouji himself, however, was approaching the crest of the hill from the other side, admittedly the harder way as the slope was steeper. He wanted to make sure he was in top condition for the fight, and took the harder way whenever little opprotunities presented themselves. This was more a coincidence than anything. Most would've gone around, but not Kouji.

Upon reaching the top, he paused and lowered his head, resting a moment. The chill of winter still affected him as his coat was much thinner than the wolves from these parts or the colder regions. He wasn't especially large either, an average male's build, if not a bit lengthy.

His ears perked though the rest of him did not. Someone approached

 ------------------------------------

It was the sound of light panting and heavy footsteps which first alerted the black wolf that some other creature was crossing about the, presumably rougher, portion of hillside. It would take a few more careful steps until he would finally catch scent of the other beast- now knowledgably a wolf, and male. His brow shifted somewhat and he snorted, his eyes focusing forward on the crown of the hill. Who traveled about his midst today? More vagabonds? Or something more?

The old king shifted his head, his long body still thickly plumed in winter fur. It caused a small ring of fur around his neck to bunch; giving him a quizzical expression somewhere between solidity and ironic fluffiness. He kept himself still, rather then moving towards the sound of approaching feet, finding then that it would be more apparent that the other creature was making his way over towards him; or at least in his direction. His whiskers puckered somewhat in thought; but it did not take long to catch sight of the other creature.

He was a young male, although he did not appear to be as young to have been just out of adolescence. A stark blue color, which showed up as a faint grey in his own partially colorblind eyes. His eyes did seem intent on a task before he had stopped, and Phib found himself stepping somewhat to the side to get a better look at him, before rising his head and arching his ears. "Hello there." His voice responded, the end of his tail flicking once, but did not rise.

 -----------------------------------

Kouji took a seat, not tired, but feeling like having a rest for a moment, gazing over towards the black scarred stranger quietly. He was older, by a few years by the scent of him. He smelled of a female, very low in dominance was she. As for the black wolf before him, he certainly seemed well traveled as well, making Kouji wonder if his nose was accurate in suggesting he was not from these lands.

"Hello." He replied in kind, voice carrying trace hints of a slur ((Asian accent, very minor, possibly not noticeable at all.)). "Not disturbing you, am I?" Better to be safe rather than sorry, after all.

Phib's ears swept forwards, having retracted momentarily before the other male spoke. A slight accent, he caught- different from the ones used about these woods, although he himself carried his own strange and slightly sharp tone of his country. He looked healthy though, although it appeared that he had been doing some sort of strenuous activity prior to their meeting. A polite tone was not unwelcome upon the brute's ears, and whatever stubborn and harsh expression he had held at first meeting relaxed somewhat to simply appearing stern.

"Not at all." His voice rumbled in a quick manner, carrying a certain fluecency in practical conversation. "Should you be?" He questioned, his left brow raising somewhat in a partially amused fashion, although he let a faint grin cross about the side of his muzzle.

 ----------------------------------------

Kouji offered up a slight grin, almost seeming to be tired or smirking, but his demeanour remained relaxed.

"I don't believe so, I'm fairly certain I would remember otherwise."

 -----------------------------------------

When the other male responded to him with a somewhat tired expression, it was hard for Phib to pin-point whether or not he had taken him seriously, or if his slightly degenerate humor fell without appreciation. This wasn't terribly concerning towards him- for he had a very careful balanced personality somewhere between being a buffoon and terribly serious. His ear shifted somewhat, and he took a slow step to the side, allowing the muscles in his shoulder to shift. Phib squinted his eyes, perhaps pondering whether or not to continue being abstract, or be a bit more political.

He allowed himself to chuckle somewhat deep in his frame, mostly for lack of a better response to the other male's statement. "No, I don't suppose you would. I tend to be remembered by those I spite." It was true- in any case.

"I am Phib." He remarked, although he did not hold much attention now to whether or not the name would be recognized. He did keep his eye on this fellow however- he'd yet to place him. He still seemed too healthy to be a vagabond, and yet, somewhere in that expression was something...jaded?

 ---------------------------

: It could quite easily be blamed on Kouji's busy mindset. Even now he was too busy turning over the thought of what was to come to be fully on guard, but he quickly rectified this as it looked like conversation would continue. Straightening slightly, not missing the movement or speech of the other, Kouji tuned his ears on Phib quietly. Phib, was it? It seemed to want to ring a bell, Phib...

"Phib? From North-East of these lands?" Kouji quirked a brow.

 ----------------------------

Well, this was surprising. He'd spent so much time adjusting himself to not being well known that now that someone did know of him, he felt somewhat flabbergasted as to what to do. It wasn't that being recognized was so particularly shocking to him; it was more that this was are creature who did not know him as this land's more recent shady king and traveler. But what version of himself was known to this creature? The war king? Hrothmund's son? Or the one so scandalously vacant and exiled?

Phib's ear shifted reflectively, but as far as facial expressions, did not change from his usual stony facade. Well, certainly there weren't any other wolves so ostentatiously named Phib from the northern regions. "I am he." He spoke, his eyes sharp.

 ---------------------------------

So it was him after all.... His father never did hold this alpha in high regard, after rumors of a female single handedly bringing about the ruin of two packs, Phib's being one. Of course, that was just what what their traveler told them, but it wasn't in Kouji's mind at the time to think he was misinformed.

"Forgive me if I'm being too forward. My name is Kouji, I'm also from the North East, though... I would say a bit further East than most." As if his coat was no testimate to that on it's own. It looked scragly in comparison to the likes of the monsterously sized wolf known as Hige, who was like a giant walking carpet of fur .

 We're all mad here...

The day had come and gone with mostly no event, which was in his case, a very strange day indeed. Once more had he'd spent the majority of the day scouring the coast and thinking on lively things mostly pertaining to himself, and quite a few things that were far out of reach. Even with the forest silent his mind was bubbling at a rate that he had to fold his ears dejectedly against his head to block out the sound of his own vexed thinking. His father had always said he thought too much to be productive and not enough to produce. Now even his later ears of life, Phib had to imagine that perhaps it was partially true. And having been afflicted by the reputation of being brash, it was ironic to imagine he would spend so much time pondering nothing.

The large and long black creature shifted, lowering himself prone for a moment, and stretching his stark legs forward to stretch his toes. As he rose he snorted somewhat, and gazed at the particular forest he had entered in. The night air was cool against the fading winter clutches, and in the distance some large animal was scouring in the night. The wolf's eyes narrowed somewhat and he scrunched the length of his broad snout, taking a few strides forward through the underbrush and to the place between a pair of trees.

It was a dark night, he thought with a steady gesture. In the darkness he blended into shadow, although from the place he stood he was somewhat enlightened by the grey trees. A silence had come to pass over the area as a silvery cloud had crossed the face of the moon and drowned out it's rays, and the brute stood in what light remained, his eyes sternly surveying the area before him. An interesting night- perhaps it would make up for a most shoddy day.

 pant pant pant...

Small white clouds appeared infront of Tajilo's long muzzle, disappearing and reappearing faster and faster as his breathing became more ragged. His long legs stumbled in their dance, causing the lanky wolf to gasp as he fell foreward, catching himself just as he was about to his the thick layer of leaves that lay thick on the forest floor. His slender muzzle wrinkled disapprovingly at the strench that the rotting underbrush gave off, and he righted himself quickly, golden eyes darting back and forth quickly, as if making sure no one saw his fall.

But someone did. The shadow wolf that haunted him was standing just beyond the trees, a smirk upon it's lips. Tajilo's eyes widened in fright, and he raced off, tail between his legs. His large ears were pressed flat against his skull, and his heart pounded out of his chest. The phantom wolf was back. At least to Tajilo.

You see, their was no wolf. No phantom watching him, mocking him. It was a figure of his imagination, a crazy illusion. He came up with quite a few of those, actually. His mind would invision that at every crack of a twig, every whisper of the wind, another enemy appeared. His insanity was credited to his past, one of broken lies, hopless dreams. Can you blame him for being warped after a past like his?

His paws, raw and bleeding, finally were met with the soft sifting of beachs sand. He stopped, confused as he looked down. Sand? Since when was there a beach here? He looked up and out to sea, befuddled. Where was he?

 ----------------------------------

'Ah- Yes, here it is.' Phib thought vaguely to himself as suddenly, a brown wolf shot out from the darkness in a blur of lanky fur and stumbling. Well, at least he knew now that it was karmatically impossible for him to go through a day without one bizarre occasion. But almost as soon as the startled and weary looking wolf had caught his attention, did he vanish, running straight out to the coast which he had been walking on earlier. Distemperedly he snorted, for a little further down this strange wolf would be upon his lands.

Phib gave a sort of groaning sigh, and shook some of the cold off his pelt. It left his skin tingling, and he paused for a moment to consider himself, before picking up the pace and following the direction of the strange wolf blindly running about. Suddenly the brown wolf pitched forward and fell- but before the large wolf uttered another word, he was off again in a flurry of deranged behavior. Was he mad? The black wolf took a second to observe whether or not there was some threat in the vicinity. His nose crinkled somewhat and he swayed, turning from his thoughts and back to this more immediate problem.

He had to run now to catch up with this other creature, his own ghostly black form moving like a shadow upon the moonless forest floor. Before long he was following tiny blood marks left by paws, and this exceedingly concerned him, until finally bursting upon the shores of the rocky beach. Now on the portions of the beach that were sandy, his bloody feet stuck out like red markers which shown bright in the large wolf's pale eyes.

"Hold." He said thickly, the black wolf's voice harsh and foreign in his throat. He trotted forward, his tail arching and gesturing towards the other male; whom seemed transfixed upon the cold sea. Phib found he could not say more, and simply stretched out his neck to get a better look at the fellow- and to see what he would do next.

 ----------------------------------------

A strange noise filled Tajilo's ears as he snapped out of his transfixtion with the sea. His golden eyes, already wide, seemed to grow even larger as the strong scent of another wolf filled his nose. He held his breath for a moment, his entire body suddenly weary. His heart screamed out for oxygen, and his throat was dry and sore from the rapid breaths he sucked in. His ribcage heaved in and out, dark brown fur stuck to his body frame from sweat. Swiveling his ears back, he glanced slowly behind him, where the noise had originated.

There stood the phantom wolf. The one that mocked him in the forest. There, the wolf with the scarred muzzle. And he was coming to get him. Tajilo shriveled under the other wolf's powerful, cold gaze, sensing that he was of a powerful position. His tail tucked back beneath his legs, and he whined softly, the noise cut short as he panted. He glanced up upon the black wolf once more before casting his eyes downward.

A sudden shiver ran through Tajilo as he wondered wildly what the wolf would do. He had never known other wolves to be exactly kind, and he was sure that this one would be no different. He shifted, wincing as he felt the small grains of sand dig into his paws, glancing behind him to find the trail of blood upon the sand. that is how he was followed so easily. He left a trail. He cursed at himself silently, bashing himself for being so stupid.

 ---------------------------------------

Phib shifted the end of his ear, watching as the other male before him began to slowly degenerate into something of a quivering lump. The brown wolf stared at him with such a horrified look of surprise on his face that Phib had to wonder for a moment whether or not all his thinking had made him look simply wretched. But there was something else in this wolf's eyes- recognition. He had met many wolves in his six years of life- but this brown wolf failed to spark a memory in the brute. And yet! Such veracity in that look! As if he was but moments from slaughtering him.

He held a few more moments, before it became apparent that the other wolf was content to waiting his fate rather then uttering a word to him. With the sound of rushing waves behind him, Phib took a slow step forward, his lean leg sticking hard in the rocky sand. He moved as forward as he dared, leaning hi head down to the sunken male until it was only about a foot away, and snorted somewhat. The wolf smelt mostly of the blood from his ragged paws, and something of underbrush.

"You," he spoke, a green eye focused sharply upon the other male. He glanced his eyes downwards towards his paws. "You run your feet bloody. What cause is that?" He remarked curtly, and lifted his head forward until it rose above the level of the other crouching figure.

 -----------------------------------------

To tell? To tell of the madness that invaded his mind like spiders, to tell of the wretched past that haunted him, to tell of the reason he ran? Never. He snarled, a sharp glint in his eye. To tell would be to unleash the past, a thing that had controlled him. He had locked it away. At least, most of it. Of his mother destroying herself, his father standing by, watching. To tell would be to relive the past, and that he could not do.

He blinked quickly, once again awakening from the thick waves of thought that consumed him. He smirked, his head moving back and forth slowly, back and forth in a rythmic motion. He chuckled gleefully, a sound that revealed his backward madness.

 "To tell, I cannot do."

His voice was oddly high-pitched, a strange sound. It hadn't always been that way, no, it was just a side effect from never using it. He talked to himself in his mind, or what was left of it.

 ------------------------------------------

When a low snarl echoed from the jaws of the other wolf, Phib refrained with his own, brutally harsh and guttural sound. It sounded less canine then most- and it was replaced by some sort of miserable noise which at it's very best stood something like low retching. Despite his low growl in response, he did not make much movement upon this creature- he used it simply as a reminder that he was not about to be caught up in a fight.

And then- the brown wolf moved and began to laugh darkly. Phib watched him cautiously and sat, his eyes swallowing up as much of the light as it could to see the wolf better. He moved in about and shook his head in slow circles, jabbering something before saying 'To tell, I cannot do.'

Phib himself was so used to the awkward phrases his mate used that he did not directly pick up that the wolf was speaking in a bizarre manner. "You cannot- or will not?" The black brute's voice struck out against the waves. "I mean you little harm friend." He spoke, deciding perhaps this should be addressed.
