I don't necessarily fear dying, just the thought that I might die without doing anything meaningful in life is what sort of scares me. Why live at all if you didn't find any meaning in it? But while I'm not scared of dying, I don't want to die a slow, painful death or something ordinary like falling down the stairs. I want to go out with a bang...or a black hole.

Who knows what will happen when we die? Because I certainly don't... I will say yes... I'm afraid, because human nature tells us to be afraid of the unknown.

It's a very hard question for me. A part of me is so Montaigne'ian and Epicureian about the possibility of experiencing my own death: there's no way I can have that kind of experience. But another part of me, the one that loves Heidegger's teachings about "death is my only possibility that is only mine and no one else's" is thinking about death and that way I'm supposed to be "authentic". That's why I have the strange habit of praying... the only praying I do honestly: for a safe and happy death. Why is death supposed to be happy, you may ask. Because, after Wittgenstein, I think that the kind of life you're living is the same as the death you'll have. As the smart guy said: the one who fears his death is living a false life. And they were right when they told me: if you'll start studying philosophy you may never find the right answer, but you'll definetly have many new questions...

No, I am not afraid of death. Dying? Meh. Cockroaches, however... now they're another story.

some one once asked me "Do you fear the darkness inside of your room?" i said no " i fear the darkness out side of it".So i don't fear death as death it's self. I feal the way i might die is much worse then death it's self.

While we're on the topic of death... does the thought of it ever make anyone think twice about the dicision to be an Atheist? I'm not pushing anything, I was just raised Catholic until I was 13, and now at age 18, I can't help but think, even though I definitely don't believe any of that crap... what if... when I die... I find out I was wrong... Eternity is a long time if you really think about it... Idk... I just wanna know if anyone else feels that way. It's like... Catholocism has been drilled into my head for so long that no matter what I tell myself I believe, it'll always be there... sweatdrop

I have the same problem, and I guess it's pretty common for a person that was raised in a certain way to have that way on mind, even if common sense or your reasoning tells you something else. I think most of my doubting came from it. If I didn't have any dogma it would be hard to doubt, isn't it?

It's good to know I'm not alone though.

Daffodil the Destroyer
I definitely fear the way in which I might die. I'm scared shitless of the thought of being raped, beaten, shot, drowned, etc. That's just because I fear pain.
I don't worry much about the afterlife, which is what I imagine this thread is getting at. I don't believe in an afterlife, though I do concede that it is a possibility and I won't know one way or the other unless I die and find myself still conscious somewhere. I have residual nervousness left over from my religious upbringing, but mostly I don't concern myself with it overmuch. I'll let myself worry about it when it's an immediate concern.
I'm not afraid of ceasing to exist whatsoever, and I don't understand those who are.

dl1371 what im scared of is dying without doing anything meaningful in my life so nobody will remember me because if youre remembered you kind of live forever That's a very interesting thing you say. Now just imagine how many people die and nobody's going to remember them... Maybe a few people around, maybe family... But they will be forgotten someday anyway. And children, very small children who never had opportunity to do something to be memorized... I'm afraid that "living forever in memories thing" is reserved just for a small amount of famous people. Like artists, great politicians, scientists, and such. Who will remeber Paris Hilton after 200, 300 years from now on? So I think pursuing fame just in order to "live forever" can become a dangerous obsession, there's no point in that. What benefits can this give to you if you're already dead? And that's also why people bring up the idea of afterlife: they want to make even those small children a meaningful existence. Human nature is something very strange and I think that's the only real difference between humans and animals: the wish of making your life meaningful and somewhat justified.

I'm not really afraid of dieing, I mean everybody's doing it whee . But either way, I'd really like to find out what's next after my life.
I'll either die laughing or laugh at how I died.

I guess I would be alittle pissed if I died considering my life wouldn't turn out how I wanted it to. Although, I would be slightly glad. Being alive for so long, I couldn't take it. Just waiting for that long sleep is apart of life and I'm sure the sleep is better then the life itself. Plus, you have that question wondering if you will dream or not. :3
