The silver had left behind its mark, droplets of blood clinging to its metallic surface. Sand paused for an instant; she struggled to create a strategy for a game lost in haze. Every hit had been fortune, she knew, for within the murk of the dungeon striking blind had become the norm. The sliver had grown warm in her hand, she pulled it to her chest again as the naginata blade appeared, carving through flame but not flesh. Sand spun again and reached out to her opponent with her daggers edge.

Somehow, before the blood from her arm even reached the floor, her opponent had disappeared into the mist and the swipe hit nothing but air. Breathing heavily, she paused to change her grip, pulling her hand back from the blade into the correct position. She watched the mist swirl around her, moving with her breath. There! Was that movement, or a trick of the mist? She went on instinct and forced her other hand around to grip the pole in a vertical, defensive position. Her left elbow shook and a trickle of warmth continued down her arm. The silver emerged from the mist and she grimaced with triumph. She cast the pole to the side, pushing the blade away and twisted the pole. Even now, with her opponent right in front of her, mist obscured the face, denying her any connection to the pink creature that had caused her such pain. Snapping back to reality, she ignored the scream in her left arm as she swung the pole around to a low horizontal position and jammed the bottom end towards her opponent's center.

A snarl broke through the crow’s lips as the pole forced her weapon brutally to the side. Sand struggled to right herself, now thrown wholly off balance as the tip of the naginata again went for her gut. Unable to recoil from the incoming attack Sand instead attempted a parry with the small sliver in her right hand, catching the base of the blade with its tip. The catch was not a sure one, however and the force behind the other weapon breached the crow’s cover. Before she knew it the blade had disappeared from sight, leaving behind a signature in red; pain flooded the pink beast and she shuttered violently. When her glowing eyes glanced upward again the change was clear, Melis had found it fit to regain control.

The old crow scrutinized her lesion, yet displayed no sign of upset. Clouds swirled about her frame as she watched for a sign of red; she swiveled slowly in place until she found her mark. Gathering her hands together she produced a ball of flickering flame, casting it towards her adversary.

Her hit was not as severe as she would have hoped; Nagi felt the force of the blade pass by her opponent with a slip of pressure along the side. Settling into an offensive stance, she forced herself to appreciate the fact that she had actually managed to hit her opponent this time. Suddenly, a wave of exhaustion hit her and she shuddered. Dropping to a knee, she held the naginata vertical, knowing full well she could not leave herself completely defenseless. Though, fighting in the deceptive mist made sheer luck as much a part of defense as skill and foresight. At the thought of luck, she was shocked to see a blazing pink fireball move over her head, harmlessly passing through the blade of the naginata. She knelt there for a moment, wondering on the amount of luck such a miss required. Best to take advantage of such luck while it was still hers. Letting the naginata fall into her hands, she tried to move her left as little as possible as she lunged from her knees in the direction the fireball had come from.

A snicker broke through the old crow’s lips as she watched the Nagi flicker into sight, the naginata driven towards her chest. She sidestepped the weapons thrust and back stepped a few feet. She had seen the Nagi, had sensed her weariness, and now she felt certain the poe would not outrun her next attack. Despite the gashes along her shoulder, thigh, and waist, the crow began to pick up speed. She kept her eyes locked on the flickering spot of red and as she grew closer she took a breath, releasing with it a vile scream. The sound reverberated through the dungeon, its deafening volume seeming to grow louder with each echo.

She missed, an observation taken wearily and she couldn't help but sigh heavily. There was an odd warble in the air for just a moment and before she could even find the coherent thought to wonder what it was, pain shot through her head and she dropped the naginata to clutch at her ears. It seemed to reverberate through her mind and she frantically dropped to her knees and groped for the naginata. Her fingers wrapped around the pole as tears spilled from her eyes. It was like lightning, this pain, and in panic she began to swing back and forth in front of her, stepping forward again after each swing. The pain had to stop somehow.

The Nagi’s pole caught the crow squarely in the gut, eradicating the remainder of air in her lungs. The screech was cut short; the crow fell to her knees beside the doubled over flesh of the red poe, within an arms reach perhaps. Melis hurled her body at the poe as she struggled for air, claws extended and swiping madly.

Nagi's triumph at the shrieking pain finally dissipating was short lived. While struggling to stay on her feet in the trembling aftermath of the pain, she was an easy target. With a bodily impact and a mass of pink in front and then on top of her, she felt the naginata fall from her hands and hit the ground with alternating clangs as the metal and wood ends bounced back and forth. The weight on her chest was suddenly punctuated by the claws sinking into her shoulders and she just barely managed to get her hands under her opponent's wrists, as the movement wrenched the claw holes in either of her shoulders further open. With a frustrated growl, she kicked her right leg out and managed to flip her opponent off. Her opportunity for attack came and went as her opponent was already fading back into the mist. This frustration was replaced by another more pressing - after scanning the visible floor around her feet, she realized she could not see her naginata.

The crow lost herself in the chaos of her last attack and without warning found herself rolling about on the worn stone of the dungeon floor. She managed to break skin, the droplets of blood left on her claws served as individual reminders. Picking herself up she turned this way and that, lost again in the sheath of mist. She stumbled and tripped, knees hitting the stone panels with a hard thud and almost breaking skin. As she placed a hand down she felt not cold rock, but sturdy wood. Was this… Could it be? Had the Nagi lost her weapon to the consuming fog? The old crow cackled in delight, her opponent was unarmed! Exposed, defenseless… The crow sung these words to herself as she tightened her grip on the naginata’s shaft and rose from her knees. Glimpsing what she assumed was the Nagi’s crimson hide she charged with the poe’s weapon, though hardly as skilled at weilding it she hoped her primitive lunges might prove efficient.

Swiftly dropping to her knees, she desperately spread her hands along the floor for the naginata. How could she lose it? Her one true weapon, the thing she had come into being with? Stupid, she was getting stupid with her injuries and frustration, that's all it came down to. There! A shift of pink in the mist, and suddenly a sliver of light thrust though the mist above her head. The pink thing had her naginata?! Jumping up, she grabbed the pole just below the blade and pulled back. How ridiculous was this? The pink creature didn't have any training, any connection to the naginata, it had no right!

Something abruptly broke the naginata’s path, a pillar? The poe? Melis squealed in delight, fighting through the fog for a clear look. Clinging to the shaft right below the blade was Nagi, no fresh blood in sight. With a hiss she wrenched the pole back, trying to regain control over the weapon after the poe adhered herself to it.

Her feet scrabbled for purchase on the stone floor and her fingers ached and sweated against the wood. It was slipping, slowly, and it pained Nagi to realize it. Her knuckles strained against the metal ring at the base of the blade. Her hand was just an inch from blade. A slip from her fingers and she let go abruptly before her own blade could slice her hands apart. As the naginata yanked back into the mist, Nagi's lip quivered and she bit it sharply. A true warrior could battle in any circumstance, even weaponless. She put up her hands in fists. They were small, clawless. She didn't know much about hand-fighting, but she settled into what she figured was something defensive.

"You just go and have my naginata. I'll take it back...but don't think I need it to defeat you."

The crow jerked the pole again; surprised to find that this time she met no resistance. She cackled in her small victory and, bracing herself, thrust the naginata in the same direction as before.

The blade came back almost as soon as it had disappeared, but Nagi was ready for it. Dancing to the side, she let it pass under her arm and she jumped along the length of the pole and let out a right hook towards the lower end.

[[you forgot to roll so I’ll roll for you and for me]]

Melis sank to the floor as a fist meant for her head soared above. She hadn’t seen the Nagi move that fast before, in fact she appeared to emerge out of thin air. The crow thrust the butt of the naginata up at the Nagi’s gut and missed, the force of the attack causing her to spill onto her knees.
