At first his words didn’t sink into her whirling thoughts. She saw his mouth move but heard no words come from them, and she felt the brief bursts of fear leak into his emotions. She was barely a second away from pulling the trigger properly when his words sunk in. He didn’t know? How could he not know? He was a man, he had probably been planning this from the start! He was just postponing the inevitable, yes that was it. She should just pull the trigger, not allow him the pleasure of postponing this. But at the same time she felt a small amount of confusion from him, maybe he really didn’t know? No, that was impossible, he just didn’t want to die. He just didn’t want to have to admit to his plans and suffer the consequences as all men did. She shouldn’t answer him, she wouldn’t answer him, but at the same time she didn’t pull the trigger. She properly focused on him, staring him right in the eyes. Eyes that didn’t match, eyes that didn’t seem to belong.
Thunder rumbled again as she opened her mouth to speak, each word didn’t even register in her mind, and as soon as it was said it was gone.
Because it is necessary. Life must pay for life.” Her voice blended with the thunder, raspy and monotone. As her words finished every fiber of being screamed at her to pull the trigger, but something held her back. Something she couldn’t explain prevented her from actually killing him right then like he deserved. A whispered question made itself heard in the hurricane of her mind, ‘Would he admit to his plans?’

WoodWhisp knew Twilight was at the end of her ropes, and he knew he had to do something. But he knew if Twilight attacked Calla she would shoot his beloved. That was why he had not interrupted her himself, anything that stood between Calla and Alister’s death would be shot and killed without second thought, without mercy. Calla held respect for Twilight, for anyone who had to deal with Alister so closely without killing him, but that wouldn’t stop her from shooting to kill.
She thinks it necessary because she believes that if left alive he will inflict nothing but pain and suffering on her and the child! WoodWhisp explained, gods he hoped Twilight would understand, Calla needs to admit this to him herself but… WoodWhisp hesitated, could he trust Twilight not to inform Alister? He would have to, he needed her on his side if the two were to resolve this relatively peacefully, But Calla is pregnant and feels Alister would only kill her and the child if left alive. WoodWhisp explained, rushed, knowing this was probably a mistake. If Twilight told Alister it would make things worse, the minutes Calla felt Alister knew she would shoot, without second thought. Because that would confirm her belief that he had planned this. Please, you can’t tell Alister. It will only make this worse.

He'd barely heard her over the rumble of thunder, a thing that sounded more like the death toll for him. Life must pay for life. A simple answer, a simple answer that was supposed to mean something. Something that would determine whether he lived or died. He needed a chance to think a chance to figure out just what the woman seemed intent on killing him for. Of course such a chance wouldn't come. Calla was out for blood and with each rumble of thunder his time seemed to be growing shorter. "A life for a life..." The words themselves seemed so familiar but where had he heard them before...? Another crack of thunder sent a fine shiver down his spine and he paled visibly the answer finally coming to mind. A life for a life...it made perfect sense really. Shuddering he swallowed, realization finally dawning.

Whatever bits of anger and tension that had held Twilight on her feet was gone, and the wolf shook barely remaining on her feet. "Her....child....?" Voice shaking, Twilight swallowed once then twice before shaking her head to clear it and settle her thoughts. "Alister can be heartless, he can be a downright b*****d but..." Tail swaying her eyes narrowed as she turned an ever darkening gaze on WoodWhisp, "...he'd never do such a thing."

Calla stared down at him, hatred and anger in her eyes. But still she was curious, the sense of dread she felt wash off of him. Yes, he knew, he had planned this! Every rumble of thunder were voices whispering for her to kill, every distant crack of thunder was the cue for her to pull the trigger. But still she refrained. Was he to coward to defend himself? Was he to coward to admit to his own plans? Of course he would, he a man, nothing but a coward.
Pull the trigger
But still her curiosity persisted, why had she been so attracted to him? She had known he was nothing but another man.
Pull the trigger
Had she really thought him better than that? After all their bouts and arguments?
Pull the trigger
Why him though? She had been through plenty of other men before and this had never happened to her. Why Alister? Why had this man managed to cause this when no one else had?
Pull the trigger
Calla resisted. She would hear him out at least, even though every fiber of her being wanted him dead, every inch of her screamed for her to pull the trigger and leave him for dead. It was what he deserved, she had to protect it. It was her duty now, it came before everything else. She had to protect it and that mean he had to die. Mean she had to pull the trigger and she had to pull the trigger soon before he could try to escape. Fine, she would give him a few seconds to speak, but if he tried to move she would pull the trigger then and there. That was her duty, that was what she had to do. Because if she didn’t he would cause only horrors and suffering beyond imagine. That was all men ever did.

WoodWhisp shuddered as Twilight turned that gaze on him. What had he caused? He had promised to protect her but all he ever seemed to bring her were more problems and pain! He couldn’t even uphold his promise to her, his promise to himself to protect Calla. He could feel it all crumbling down around him right now, right this moment. Calla’s past was rearing it’s head and he had delivered it straight to Twilight.
Please, Twilight, forgive me. He whispered, bowing his head to her, I know Alister wouldn’t. But Calla doesn’t, it’s instinct for her. WoodWhisp explained, knowing it wouldn’t fix anything. If Calla shot Twilight would attack and he’d lose her. That thought frightened him more than anything, almost more than losing Calla. Calla thinks this of all men, it’s not just Alister personally. Still, Calla was his rider, and he found himself trying to redeem her in Twilight’s eyes,It’s nothing against him personally. Her past still haunts her, though she doesn’t know it.

That look in and of itself promised death, and the thought combined with the new knowledge of just why the woman wanted him dead made him pale further. Maybe death would be a good thing...a quick shot to the head to put him out of this misery...but no death would be the easy way out wouldn't it? An easy escape from responsibility. Shifting slightly he winced feeling the flow of blood from his shoulder resuming, another wound to add to his 'collection' as if he hadn't been shot enough times before.

"It makes sense doesn't it...? My life for a child's..."
Eyes narrowing slightly as Alister regarded the woman he soon sighed shaking his head. "You didn't intend on telling me did you?" Of course she hadn't. She'd come with the intention of killing him, nothing more nothing less. Now even with this new found knowledge there was still no guarantee she wouldn't shoot him.

Another flick of her white tipped ebony tail and Twilight drew in a shuddering breath reminding herself not for the first time that WoodWhisp had done nothing to her, that he was blameless and didn't deserve her wrath. The one who had managed to drive her from confused to enraged in a heartbeat was also untouchable...untouchable so long as Alister was alive. The knowledge calmed her darker side and she tossed her head, gaze softening considerably though there seemed to be a hint of sadness there now. "The past haunts us all doesn't it?" Voice soft, her ears tilted back at another clap of thunder. "Thinking about it now...I can see just why she wants to kill him...but...you know where my loyalities lie."

Yes, she had been right. He did know, he had just confirmed it. Just admitted it. And because he knew that meant he had planned it. He shifted, and her finger tightened on the trigger, he was going to move. He was going to make a run for it and she had to be ready. She couldn’t let him escape, she couldn’t let him live. She had to think of it, had to protect it. That was all she could do for now, all she had to do. He had intended this, for seen this. This chance to cause more misery and suffering in the world. But she was smarter than that, she knew what he was thinking and she was going to put a stop to it. She couldn’t let him go on with his plans, to hurt a child was despicable, he was unfit to live.
And then his question fell on her ears. Anger swelled up again, lashing out at him.
You question my motives?” She hissed, “A heartless wretch as yourself has no right to.” It was obvious she meant every word she said, each one a knife to lash out at him. Yes, he deserved to suffer before he died, suffer over what he had caused, and over what he had been planning. A plan she would prevent. “One such as you had no right to know. Nor any of your kind.” She could be civil with him, prove to him that was possible before she killed him. She would answer his petty questions, play along with his little game. But then she would kill him, leave him for dead as she had to do.

WoodWhisp relaxed only slightly as Twilight calmed. He still had to be on guard, try to catch any warning of action in Calla’s thoughts before she could act. Try and put a stop to it, try to block it, something he would have to do something! He had to do it for Twilight, he had brought this down upon her when he had promised her to shield her from pain. It was the least he could do.
Her past. She can’t even remember it. WoodWhisp whispered, questions he had mulled over countless nights, questions and nightmares that still would wake him from his slumber. It haunts her none the less, and she doesn’t even know why. WoodWhisp shook his head, that wasn’t Twilight’s problem. That was something he would have to work out on his own, he would never share that with anyone. I understand Twilight. I want to stop this as much as you do, but I can’t. He glanced between Calla and Alister before settling his gaze back on his mate, I’m so sorry for bringing this to you, she gave me no choice.

"A heartless wretch?" The question came out as a bitter laugh and Alister tossed his hair from his face turning darkened eyes on Calla. "And what does that make you? A blameless victim? Another innocent soul caught up in one of my games?" There was a soft snort followed by lazy tilt of his head as he calmly regarded the woman before him. To call him a heartless wretch...the notion itself was utterly amusing. The woman was no better than him in some respects, toy with someone until they broke and then toss them away in favor of another. Yet he was the heartless one...the thought dragged another dark laugh from him. "So...you intended to shoot me on a whim...for something I had no control over nor any idea of." Each word was laced with dry amusement as he slowly pulled himself to his feet. "And here I thought better of you. Obviously such assumptions on my part were wrong."

One ear flicked toward Alister and Calla for a moment before Twilight returned most of her attention to WoodWhisp. The two would work out their issues without killing each other, as doubtful as that seemed at the moment. The words would sting, but there were some wounds that needed to be laid bare in order to heal. Though...taking a brief glance at the humans she couldn't help but sigh. A dangerous little game they were both playing. WoodWhisp's words however dragged her attention away and back to the other wolf. "She can't remember her past...?" The revelation seemed like such an alien concept to her. A slight flick of her tail and she sighed. "This would have happened sooner or later, so no need to apologize."

Calla ignored his words, taunts, distractions. That was all they were, trying to break her down, give him a chance to escape. She wouldn’t let him though, the only place he was going was to the arms of death. She would make sure of that, he would get what he deserved. She had come to make sure of that, prepared for his little games. She would play to an extent, but he would die soon.
Pull the trigger now!
He started to move.
No, hear him out. Show him civility.
More words, more meaningless words as he postponed the inevitable.
Pull the trigger now!
Insults, feigned innocence. How could he do that knowing that she knew?
Hear him out.
Calla forced back the words as thunder ran overhead, focusing on it to clear her mind. Her anger welled up again as he spoke. He had no room for such words at a time like this, had no right to speak to her like this. She thought she had made herself clear. Calla set off a warning shout, “Stay back.” She hissed, steadying her aim on his head again. She would play his games, so long as he didn’t move. As soon as he tried something she would pull the trigger, until then she could play. Civility, civility, civility, Calla repeated the word to herself until she trusted her voice again.
You know better than that.” Calla spat, how could he not admit his own plans even now? “A whim? How dare you lie to me even now. My trust has obviously been misplaced.” She snorted, starting to shake. It was everything she could do just to keep her aim steady. A crack of lightning, her finger tightened on the trigger, she could feel it starting to give beneath the pressure. Lies and insults, that was all he had left to him. Of course he would never admit his own wrongs, no man ever did.

WoodWhisp nodded, gazing at Calla. Without realizing it he found images and faces of her past escaping from his private thoughts. That rickety shelter she had called home, her parents, Ingard, Iton, Oshen, Vic. As soon as he realized this he shut it down, turning his attention back to Twilight.
It’s repressed every bit of it. WoodWhisp explained, shaking his head sadly, The earliest thing Calla remembers is waking up on the Academy steps. He explained, But that isn’t your problem Twilight. I apologize. He had sat down only to jump back up the minute he felt Calla about to pull the trigger. A warning shot, that was all. He breathed sigh of relief, settling back down again, monitoring her as tight as he could, still trying to speak with her.

PostPosted: Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:53 am

Pressing his back against the wall, he didn't even flinch when the warning shot struck the wall next to his head. Any vaguely sane soul would have panicked by now or at the very least been well and truly afraid, he was neither...at least not fully. A sliver of fear still danced about in the back of his mind but nothing more than that. The woman wanted him dead, yes but for all the world it didn't seem as though she had the heart to do it herself. If she had she would have already done so.

"Lie to you? Why would I lie to you right about now? I have absolutely nothing to gain from it other than a shot to the head at this point in time." Assuming I don't bleed to death first. He added mentally with a soft snort. "Had I an idea about this do you really think I wouldn't have confronted you before? Or perhaps you think I planned it all...? Granted you were the one that insisted on coming after me."

"That...may be for the best then. Especially if its bad enough to be repressed to such an extent then it needs to remain as such." Nodding firmly, Twilight felt herself rise from her seated position only to return to it moments later once she was certain there hadn't been anymore blood split. Giving a soft snort she shook her head with a weak but good-natured smile, "I'll remember to take my revenge on you for this later~ But for now, I'll let it slide." She said with a light laugh settling for curling around her rider's feet. An apparently relaxed position from all appearances but the black wolf was still on guard, still not trusting the mental stability of either of the humans.

Calla trembled, rage boiled beneath the surface, every bit of her wanted to pull the trigger, wanted to see him fall dead. But she was human, she was merciful, she would let him speak. His words, his lies, they meant nothing to her but every prisoner had his rights. She would let him finish, even though he didn’t deserve it, even though she had already let him live long enough. He could talk, he could waste his breath all he wanted. It wouldn’t change anything, he wouldn’t admit anything. Men never did, men never changed. She repeated that to herself, she had to protect it, he would never change. She couldn’t trust him, she shouldn’t have trusted him to begin with! She had been a fool and now she had to kill him.
But something held her back. Something about the way he spoke, the look in his eyes, held her back. She could feel it, it was small, hidden deep, but it was there. Fear, he was scared, he feared death. Good, good, let him fear his own demise. Let him suffer and agonize while he kept trying to stop her.
You intend nothing but pain and suffering.” Calla’s tone was much calmer than she felt, she knew her words were true. She knew his plans and intentions, all men were the same. “I can’t let that happen.” This was the only way she could stop it. To protect it meant having to kill him.

WoodWhisp nodded, he would have to work that out on his own. Keep it hidden, continue his lies that he didn’t know any more than she did. The future was all that mattered, the future was all that existed. He would continue to let her think like that, she didn’t need the added weight of her past along with her current problems. She would have to work this out with Alister, maybe, just maybe, he could prove her wrong.
I suppose I deserve it don’t I. WoodWhisp chuckled, but it was forced. He was still nervous, still afraid Calla would fly off the handle completely and kill him. He wanted to move, to rest beside Twilight, to protect her. But he had to stay here, to stay near Calla and make sure she didn’t move. He wasn’t sure how he would stop her, but he would try when the time came.

Fear was a double edged blame, it always had been and always would be, so why was it that the underlying slivers of fear wiggling around his mind were making his thoughts clearer? Perhaps it was the fact that he refused to fully acknowledge the thing or maybe he already had..? Either way, it was there but not clouding his thoughts or driving him into a fit. Eyes narrowing at her words he scowled, "Had I intended such toward you in particular I would have shot you the moment I saw you." Tilting his head to one side quietly he considered the woman for a moment before speaking again. "I wonder...is it me, you hate or do you hate all men in general...?"

Giving a slight shake of her head as one ear flicked toward the humans once again to make certain they were just talking and not killing each other, Twilight let her jaws loll open in a yawn for a moment. "Perhaps they will get this resolved before night fall? Or at the very least before it starts to rain. I really do want to resume my skinning of that boy." She said a hint of annoyance leaking into her words as her thoughts drifted to the apprentice that had earned her wrath. Arrogant, insolent little brat.

Calla snorted. Did he really think that? Was he really that stupid? No of course not, he was just toying with her, just playing with her. He was just the same as them all, her trust and loyalty had been misplaced, she had let her guard down and now she had to kill him. Images of him crumpling, falling dead ran through her mind. Following on it’s heels the image of Alister holding the child. Calla shuddered and hissed, she couldn’t let that happen, she couldn’t allow that to happen. He would only wish it ill, wish suffering and pain upon it. That was how men were, that was how men thought. Her own father was probably dead.
Probably, probably, probably. She would never know. She didn’t need to know! All men were the same, her own bloodline included! She would stop this! She would stop Alister. She had to stop Alister.
You did shoot at me Alister.” She reminded him, her voice cold and sharp now as the thunder rumbled about them, whispering words of death to her. “You’re all the same. Bringers of pain and suffering. I have to protect it.” She trembled, even the gun began to sway slightly in her grasp, despite her efforts to keep it still and read to fire. The clock was ticking for him, she would have to pull the trigger soon.

Despite common sense WoodWhisp couldn’t help but let his curiosity win over.
What exactly did he do anyway? He inquired, realizing now was probably not the time for this but needing something to lighten the mood between them. He hated having both the women in his life distanced from him so. Calla cut off from him and Twilight so far away it seemed. It was bothering him more than he was going to let on. I mean, I’ve never seen that from you before. Okay, so he had that day he’d been unable to shut his big mouth and she had turned on him for it. But he had managed to talk himself out of that one for the better.

PostPosted: Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:01 am

A soft cluck of his tongue and he gave a rather amused sigh, "Indeed I did, how could I forget that?" Of course he hadn't, it hadn't been at the fore front of his mind but hadn't forgot the fact that he had shot at her and hadn't shot her directly. Maybe if he had they wouldn't be in this situation. Maybe maybe maybe, a little word that wouldn't exactly help him at present. Another flash of lightning blinded him momentarily leaving him blinking to clear his vision

She was trembling. From the faint sway of the gun to much more visible tremors running through her there was only one conclusion Alister could come to. The woman was trembling and her resolve seemed to be weakening. Perhaps there was still a chance that he'd get out of here alive...or at least close to it. "You don't want me dead do you? At least not fully..." He would try to reason with her. Make her see some form of logic and he'd be able to walk out of here fairly unharmed but alive.

Snorting softly she shook her head with a wolfish grin. "Do I need a reason to chase an apprentice or two?" Licking her maw at the thought of returning to her previous activities of torturing unruly apprentices and the like, she managed to stifle a laugh. True she wasn't prone to such activities on a regular basis but that boy had deserved it. "I only snap at the unruly ones that don't have patrons to keep them in line~ Especially the unruly ones with big mouths."

Anger, deep rooted and overwhelming, sought to lash out at the man. To be so careless and nonchalant like this, pull the damned trigger!
But again contrasting images moved through her mind. Alister dead and bleeding on the ground. Alister holding her child. She shuddered again, either way she couldn’t win. But she had to do this, she had to protect it. She had to protect it as she had been protected and as her child would protect theirs. It was a chain, a cycle that had to continue to keep the next generation alive, in this day and age the next generation was more important than anything. And to do that she would have to remove the previous generation, she would have to remove Alister. Her entire future rode on this moment, requiring her to pull the trigger if she wished her child to have peace.
It doesn’t matter what I want.” Calla hissed, her voice was slightly quieter though, her thoughts passing through her consciousness before leaving her mouth. “I have to do this Alister.” She shuddered as she spoke his name, dual images running again through her mind despite her efforts to block them out, “I have to protect it.” Her voice was starting to break. She swallowed and inhaled deeply, forcing herself to steady the gun. The time had come, his games were over. She would kill him now and be done with it.

WoodWhisp nodded, Ahh, always they deserve it. He agreed, Someone has to keep them in line after all. His tone was still slightly forced, but he was starting to relax more. Able to feel Calla again, but still unable to be heard in the chaos of her mind. She still resisted him, still insisted on pushing him out. It was so strange, to not feel her presence in his mind, constantly there as he was with her. And still to have Twilight away from him. But he could not hold her loyalties against her, just as she would not hold his against him. They had to stay with their Riders first and foremost, he could admit that even if he didn’t like the concept. He had lived with it, but now to feel them turned against each other, it bothered him greatly. And to have the images of Calla’s past flashing through his mind whenever he let his focus slacken for even a second. He had to keep it buried, had to keep it hidden, had to prevent Calla from finding it and having it change her.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 22, 2009 4:38 pm

"Do you really believe that though? You're the one holding the gun. Drop it or at the very least stop trying to convince yourself that you have to shoot me." Keeping his voice even, he shifted again to ease the strain on his injured arm. "Besides if you kill me, you'll only be creating more problems for yourself. Kill me and I don't doubt that there will be hell to pay. Killing another rider is utterly unacceptable isn't it?" There had to be something that would drag the woman back to her senses. His death would solve nothing, perhaps a momentary problem or two but in the long run, he would happily (or unhappily depending on how one saw it) be in his grave while the woman was left to deal with whatever hell arose from such actions.

A mildly tempting avenue but not one he cared to examine too closely. Then there was the matter of Twilight...the wolf on her own and fairly unprovoked was a loose cannon, give her a reason to and that loose cannon was more than capable of murder, granted if anything happened to him because of Calla, the woman wouldn't have to worry about what the higher ups would do to her. The wolf had told him on one too many occasions that she was perfectly capable of murder be it of another wolf or a human. A lazy reminder at best..an equally lazy threat at worst. Neither a possibility he wanted to explore ever.

"Of course, if someone didn't they'd over run the forts, not that they haven't done so already." She said adding the last part ruefully at the memory of the unruly brats that had bonded last year. Most had fled to New Eve after several encounters with the White Shadow pack of course the fools had had no idea they were simply jumping further into the inferno. A particularly loud clap of thunder set some of the younger wolves in the fort to howling wherever they were in fort and Twilight sighed keeping her attention partially focused on the humans. There might well be hope to end this on a civil note. Calla's resolve was weakening and she had yet to shoot Alister again, which was a good thing as far as Twilight was concerned. If they got this sorted out without killing each other...well she was going to give them all an earful for interrupting her torture of that pitiful apprentice....maybe. It all depended on how she was feeling once this was all over.

Calla only half listened to his words, alternating images torturing her mind, stealing away her thoughts with each beat of thunder. Every crack of lightning screaming it would be better off if she pulled the trigger. And while she knew that was true, she didn’t want to. He was right, though she would never admit that. She didn’t want to pull the trigger, because she knew she would need help. It would be so simple, just pull the trigger back a little farther and he would be dead. A quick motion for a quick death. A quick death for a lifetime of peace. No, she couldn’t think of herself in this. She had to think of it, had to think of protecting it. Anything, she would do anything to keep it safe. And that meant putting herself at risk, that meant killing Alister.
I’m not convincing anyone Alister,” That name only brought more images to mind, “I know what I have to do.” Her voice wasn’t as steady anymore, but rage still moved beneath it. A trickle of sorrow as well, as much as it was necessary she would be sad to see Alister go. “You don’t understand. How could you? I’m willing to risk it. Anything to protect it. No man would ever understand that.” She explained to him as patiently as she could, tightening her shaking grip on the Pistol.
With a deep breath Calla pulled the trigger, and at the same time jerked back. The bullet flew away harmlessly and Calla hissed. Whatever had thrown her off balance she would deal with later. Steadying her aim again she pulled the trigger intent on ending his little games.
Click.
Nothing.
Click.
Calla swore as she tossed the gun aside, she was out of ammunition. She reached for Simile, she couldn’t find the holster. Calla glanced down to confirm it wasn’t there. Calla swore again and glared at Alister. Thinking quickly, she lunged. She would have to kill him with her bare hands.

WoodWhisp intended to respond, when he picked up something. He felt Calla’s resolution solidify again, she was shooting to kill. WoodWhisp moved, bumping her slightly as she pulled the trigger. Without realizing he ripped away her other gun holster and danced away quickly. A quick scan of her mind proved she hadn’t realized a thing, yet. She would later he knew, but he was in the clear for now. It was then he felt the weight of the gun in his mouth. Moving to Twilight he dropped it before it.
Now’s his chance. WoodWhisp nodded to her, laying down, He’s on his own from here. He loved Calla, but even he knew this was foolish, the least he could do was put both humans on the same level. As he settled himself he felt Calla lunge. Well, at least he could say he had tried.
