Minkishi stared at the fin on his arm as he listened to her. She was gentle, like his mother. He slowly looked at her bright blue eyes as she spoke. He saw that she could help him a lot and she was a great ally to him
He slowly placed a hand on the fin that touched his arm. "If that time comes, I'll help you like you're helping me. I just hope I'll be strong enough then to help."
He was silent before he realized what he was doing. He slowly withdrew from her and muttered "Sorry..." He felt uncomfortable showing kindness to her. He didn't understand why he was compelled to help or even what compelled him to touch her as reinsured her. He felt he was getting too close to her. She was part of the VooDoo lines and betrayal and lies were not beyond them.

Bathory blinks slowly at the hand over her fin, then again at the slight stirring from inside. She looks up at Minkishi and nods, smiling softly, "Thank you. I....I would like that, very much."
She looks confused for a moment, then looks down. "No, no don't be. Its...its my heritage isn't it? I'm sorry, it was stupid of me to think anyone would trust me, not with my lines....I will leave if you wish."

"No! It's not that." Minkishi said suddenly, looking at her. He flushed and looked away. "Well, kind of. I've never trusted anyone, never gotten close to anyone, besides my mother. Knowing your heritage, doesn't help me with what they've done to the only one I love and trust."
He slowly looked at her. "The smiles, the praise, and the touching. This is... new. It's too friendly and awkward to me. I don't know how to react to you..."

She nods a bit, looking down still. "I'm sorry Minkishi, I never meant to make things difficult for you. At first...at first I was just glad to have met someone else outside my family who was interested in magic and had some ability with it. It was interesting to see how easily you wielded the fire, how quickly you picked everything up....I just wanted to teach you, to see how far you could go, maybe help in an indirect fashion."
She glances back up nervously, her scales glowing hotly with a blush. "Then...today...I was genuinely happy to see you I am sorry if I made you uncomfortable, I....I didn't mean to, I just....followed what my heart told me to do. I will stop if you don't like it."
She blinks slowly and looks up at him, "How...do you want to react?"

He looked at her in shock. She was actually happy to see him. He couldn't believe it. When he appeared in place, he hardly even got a glance from the family that control his mother. Of course, Ouija would smile, it was her job as a mother. She smiled at his sister, Ka-Bala, even when she hisses and calls her cruel things.
"How do I want to react...?" He looked at her confused and looked down. "I'm not sure..." He whispered. "I've never had to react to these kind of things..."

She just looks at him earnestly, "I swear Minkishi, I never, ever, meant to make you uncomfortable.....I just....", she drops her voice to a whisper, "I like you."
She nods a little and glances at him shyly, "Neither have I.....noone's ever let me close enough to be nice to them....they see what I look like, hear who my father is, and they run from me." She swims forward and tentatively hugs his chest, "Thank you for not running..."

Minkishi stiffened as she neared him and hugged him. He was unsure what to do. 'She follows her heart, why not me?' He questioned himself. He closed his eyes and tried to see what his heart told him to do.
It pounded quickly from her touch. She made him feel so warm. He lifted his arm and gently caressed the beta against his massive chest. He leaned his head down, staring at her deep, dark blue eyes. Her words rang in his ears. His lips pressed against hers for a second.
Suddenly, he shoved her away. He stared at her in horror. Before either could speak, he swam away with great speed. He couldn't believe what he had just done.

She hugs him through the stiffness, wanting him to know for sure that she does care. When he touched her, she smiled, nuzzling into his chest. At the first touch of lips, her heart stops for a beat, then quickens and causes her to press her lips back against his.
She gasps when suddenly shoved away, reacting to his horror with pain and shame, fleeing blindly in the opposite direction. How could she have been so stupid?

Minkishi returned, the next day. He wasn't sure why. He wasn't expecting her to be there. He was very confused about his actions the other day and he couldn't explain himself. He wanted to scream, he hated himself for even meeting the disgusting creature. At least, he tried to see her that way. Being part of the VooDoo lines, she should to be disgusting and hideous, but he didn't see her that way.
Even though she might not return, he was going to practice what little she taught him. This was the only place he could go without suspicious people watching him. He had arrived a lot earlier than he did before. He was trying to avoid her, at least, that's what he was thinking but he was no longer sure.
He arrived in the clearing to find it empty. He kept silent and showed no emotion. He closed his eyes, trying to clear his mind, but she was still there in his mind. He tried to ignore it as he searched for the warm, gold ball of energy within him. But he found nothing.
He thought back of the other day, how he found it from her touch. He felt his heart be began to quicken. As he began to think about Bathory, her touch, their kiss, the bubbled around him expanded and grew. This time, he encased his whole body.

Bathory returned the following day at her customary time, entering the clearing from around the wall of coral. She was behind on her practice and knew it, she should have kept practicing even after he had left, she couldn't afford these delays. Why did she bother, noone was ever nice back, noone ever stuck around....except he had, for a little while.
She curses her lineage as she moves along the wall, berating herself for caring about him even as she wished it had ended differently. She stops short when she sees him, the bubble encasing him. How much stronger he's gotten in just a day....how much she wished she weren't who she was.
"I'm sorry...I'll find somewhere else to practice...", she wasn't even sure she'd spoken until the words were said. She gives him a last, lingering look, then turns and starts to move off dejectedly, fins drooping.

The bubble around Minkishi burst when he heard her speak. He stared at her wide eyed. He wasn't sure what to say as she began to swam away. His body moved itself as he swam after her and caught her tail fin. "Wait."
He paused, staring at her. "Aren't you going to continue to teach me?" He said, his voice soft because he wasn't sure what exactly he was going at. He bit his lip and slowly let go of her fin. "Didn't you see? You're a great teacher... I wasn't sure I could master the trick but... you gave me strength."
He looked away once more. "I'm sorry, for what I did... I did what you do, I listened to my heart. I guess I shouldn't."

She stops, turning to look at him, frowning, confused. "I...I thought you...were disgusted with me. You...ran away after the kiss, I..."
She blinks slowly, looking at him. "I....made you happy? Yes, yes, you've come so far in so short a time, its wonderful. If you want me to, I will teach you, of course I will, I promised you I would."
Her mind works furiously to process everything he's said and she swims around to look him in the eye. "Do you care about me? Your heart beats faster, you get warm and...and you feel...better, about things? Stronger, more capable to handle your problems?" She lowers her eyes and takes a deep breath before continuing, putting herself on the line, "That is how you make me feel. I feel warm and good...I'm more confident in my ability to teach you everything you wish to know. You touch me and...my heart pounds but I am oddly calm."

He stared at her, amazed at she felt the same. He lowered his eyes. "I should hate you. I should find you repulsive and disgusting. I shouldn't want to be near you." He slowly lifted his eyes again. "But I can't. I feel like I belong... when you're near me. I feel like I can actually talk to you. And I feel like I need to protect you, just like her... like my mother. She's the only person I've ever cared about and now... you rank up there with her." He started at her intensely. "Yes, I want to continue with your teachings. I need to learn and get stronger. I need to protect you."
After a few moments of staring at her, he turned away and let out an agonizing groan. "This is so confusing. I shouldn't feel like this! But I do. Why?"

She looks back at him, hoping she's not wrong. At his words she lets out the breath she didn't realize she'd been holding, looking at him, "I know I shouldn't feel the way I do....my family really would kill me for it....but, I do care about you. I like how you make me feel when you're near and I hate watching you leave. I feel safe around you and I never feel safe." She meets his stare unflinchingly, "Then I will teach you everything I know."
She watches him, hating to see him so tortured. She whispers in the silence after the groan and in response to his question, "I think....I think maybe that we...are in love...I've read about it, seen my tankmates....the mated ones always look the happiest around their mates. They feel...warm, complete."
She looks up at him, "I love you Minkishi."

"Love? Mates?" Minkish gasped, and he slightly back up from the thought. But he didn't run at he started at her in shock. He chewed on the thought. Was it possible? Was he in love?
He leaned forward, grabbing her gently. He stared at her eyes. "You know how dangerous those words are? If your family found you loved me, it would... reveal your secret. They come after you." He closed his eyes, before looking away. "You have better luck with treating me like your slave if you ever want to be together. Why else would you want me? To your family, at least."
