Just about the time Morrigan had reached the lake, Ariana slowly started to awake. The first thing she felt was strong arms, at first she thought it was her uncle, but her little memory told her, rather abruptly that he had died... her grandmother as well. Her next assubtion was the Bandit that had taken her and she started to go ridged, but her body was in too much pain to try and jerk to fight back. She opened her eyes, and saw in the blazing forest's light, her green guardian angel. She managed to get one of her arms free, and felt something wet, upon looking, the smell strong, Ariana saw blood.

"You're hurt!" Ariana cried, rather weakly, the smoke from the fire had made her voice more hoarse than before.

Still clutching the pendant he had stolen from the brat he finally ditched in the forest, the bandit continued to run, he had just barely got out of the forest when he looked behind to see if he was being followed. He was, by a man with a bow and arrow, though he couldn't see his face, he assumed it was one of his own comrades and hollared for to him to follow him. "We've got to get back to the boss! We got what we were sent for!" He continued, though he wasn't entirely sure if it was the necklace, or the brat, if it was the brat, then he'd easily say that the winged demons attacked and killed her, causing a huge fire in which consumed the brat's body. The only thing left was the necklace. Bah. He'll figure out his story if that happened to be the case. He just wanted to get the hell out of there.

Morrigan had reached the lake. Her head was spinning a bit from all the excitement, and that is why she did not notice her charge begin to stir.

The gargoyle walked along the side of the lake, trying to find a decent place to hide her. No sense leaving her out in the open, if those humans came around again...Morrigan doubt she would do as well against them a second time.

But with a twitch of her green ears, she heard noises coming from the supposedly unconcious child. She stared down for a moment, her brown eyes discerning that the child awake. There was blood on her as well. Morrigan wasn't sure if it was hers or the human's.

She couldn't understand the words, but saw the child expressing concern. Perhaps she was frightened of her? No, it wasn't that. Maybe she was worried about the humans? That would make much more sense.

Morrigan took a few more steps, and gave another heavy breath. She was exhausted from all the fighting she had had to do. Going any further might end up badly. Here was as good as anywhere else.

Morrigan slowly knelt down to the ground, the girl still in her arms. She just needed a breather...yes, a breather. Morrigan set the child down on the ground next her, trying to regain her bearing.

As he approached the bandit from behind, Bryant noted that he wasn't considered a threat. It seemed that being a questionable stranger had its benefits as well in this situation. Now there were a few things he could do, but in all cases he'd need to get closer to the bandit.

Now that the man was within his sight, he picked up the pace, breaking into a sprint to catch up with the guy. From the sounds of things, there was some sort of purpose to chasing down the girl, but the reason why wasn't quite clear. Whatever it was, it seemed that it wasn't the girl herself that was important to hunt down.

"Hm? I thought we needed the girl!" he said as he drew closer, playing along for the time being.

A break in the everlasting trees revealed a small clearing, and with it, a blessed whisper of a breeze. Perhaps now Dwenna would find luck in her favor…not that she believed in such things. The idea was laughable and quickly pushed aside as she stretched her wings until she felt them strain and launched from her run mid-stride, silently thanking the currents that had seemed to snub her when she’d needed them earlier.

“I hope they were able to escape safely,” she murmured, brow furrowed in concern. She headed towards the lake, a logical decision with the fire. Between how the other gargoyle had not spoken and the ferocity of her charge at the humans, Dwenna had little reason to believe the outsider would take Ariana near other humans unless she knew she would not be seen. But that was highly unlikely, as she herself wouldn’t do that, with the way the group had chased the poor girl down.

It was quiet as she neared the quiet blue-black water, eyes searching for any sign of the others she had met this unfortunate night.

Ariana scrambled up to her knees and went to her green savior. She then took off her traveler's cloak and started tearing it into strips, upon giving a quick look around, she went to the lake and put the strips in the water, remembering what her grandmother taught her, wet cloth makes great wrapping for all wounds, but it's the herbs that heal it quicker. If only she paid closer attention to which herbs her grandmother used. She went back to her guradian angel and started wrapping her wounds. Tears streaming down her face.

"Please don't be angry with me, Guardian angel, but I don't know how to help you... I didn't pay enough attention to Gramma's lessons on herbs...." Ariana said sadly. She then made what sounded like a worried mother cat, or at least to her it did, her grandmother was the one that could do it better than she could. She started to miss her grandmother's cats that they left behind. She felt comfortable with them being around her, and her the guardian angel she was with at the moment, made her feel the same way. She then looked around again after wrapping the wet strips around her guardian angel's waist, tying them tightly to keep the wounds clean. Where was her other guardian angel? She stood up looking back toward the forest that was still blazing on fire. "Where is the other? Where is she? GUARDIAN ANGEL!!!" She called out toward the forest.

"That damn brat... I doubt it." The bandit replied. He then held up the amulet that glinted in the moon light. "I figured it was this thing here the boss wanted so badly. Heh. If it was the girl, I'll just say those winged demons attacked and killed her. And if he wants the body, I'll say it was burned in the fire."

"What was burned in the fire?" Came another voice in the dark. This voice was much deeper, more huskier.

Morrigan tiredly closed her eyes for what seemed like a moment, but opened them as she felt something wet enclose the stinging scratches from earlier.

The gargoyle had half a mind to swat at whatever was touching her, but a half moment's pause made her realize it was the girl. And the way she was wrapping the strips of cloth around her wounds was in the manner of binding them.

The human made some sound-noises, then continued on her task.

How can this be? Why is a human trying to help me? This is beyond strange.

The gargoyle's mind couldn't fathom the concept. Had she been not so exhausted she might have backpedaled away or ran, but she finally decided she would simply keep an eye on her.

Now girl was making some kind of animal noise, now becoming more and more familiar to Morrigan due to her 'condition.' Whatever it was it made her feel slightly calmer.

When she was finished, the gargoyle looked at the bindings. They were tight and well tied. The human had been taught some form of medicine.

But Morrigan didn't dwell on it further, when suddenly the girl suddenly made a string of loud, yelling noises. Morrigan hissed, her wings flapping in surprise at the sudden noise.

What is she doing? She'll attract those humans!!

Morrigan stepped forward, grabbing the child's shoulder. She bared her teeth to show her agitation the best she could, and shook her head to signify 'no'.

Bryant directed his gaze at the amulet held up in the moonlight. Certainly it seemed somewhat plausible for that to be the main target, but something still wasn't quite right. Sending a whole gang after a child for the sake of an amulet seemed a bit petty, unless the piece of jewelry was extremely valuable somehow. He had his doubts about that though.

Before he could ask the bandit another question, a deep voice emanated from the shadows. The man glanced to the side, peering below the hood of his cloak to see who it was. There was a decent chance this new stranger was among the bandit party so he'd need to stay on his toes.

"I was trying to find that out myself from this guy," he replied.

"You're friend is in there, she could be in trouble," Ariana replied her eyes still shimmering with tears. But she understood, the bad men could be near by and she knew that her guardian angel was not fit to fight. She had to protect from them. She bit her lower lip and sat back down near the green gargoyle. She made the noise again as she curled up close to her savior, her little mind racing yet again with thoughts, but this time she was thinking, she had to return the favor to her guardian. She sighed her eyes gazing at the smoke rising in the sky. Please be safe, guardian angel... she thought softly.

"Erm... the forest sir, it's burning..." The bandit said, his tone and attitude quickly changing that into fear. He shrank back as the owner of the voice came closer and the light from both the moon and the fire from the forest shown his rugged look. He was middle aged or slightly older but one could not tell because he was fit and strong looking.

"I can see that, Grouger..." The man said gruffly his dark eyes searching the bandit over then looking at the young man with him. "Where's the girl?" He then demanded. "Where is Ariana?"

Even though it was dark, all color from the bandit's face vanished in a flash. He swallowed shakily and held up the amulet to the old man who quickly took it and looked at it carefully, figering it then tenderly, the harden face softening, but his eyes remained hard. "How..."

"The winged demons sir, they...er..um...attacked the girl before we could get to her...we tried to fight them off...but uh....um....our torches caught the forest on fire.....she's gone...my-" The bandit let out a gargling screech before falling dead a bone colored hilt lodged in the bandit's throat. The old man lowered his hand again and looked back at the other man. "Let's go..." he muttered turning his back on him.

As the man he assumed to be the boss for the bandits approached, Bryant took note of the name of the child. Silently, he watched the exchange between the two, curious as to what the significance of the amulet was. And before he knew it, the one he had followed here was killed in a flash.

The man's fingers twitched slightly, as he glanced at the older man. He'll definitely need to be cautious with his actions. Of course, he could have tried to capitalize on the fact that he had a fairly good opening to attack. But then he wouldn't be able to learn anything of this situation. So instead, he began to follow him.

"Might I ask... why we needed her? She's just a child after all," he asked.

Bryant figured it wasn't exactly common knowledge amongst the men seeing how the now dead bandit thought of everything.

The man stopped short from Bryant his head slightly bowed. "I should have explained more clearly to everyone the importance in bringing her back...." He muttered gruffly. "She was my daughter...Ariana, the old woman and her son were gypsies who had taken her from me when she was only a month old. I thought they had long since gone when only recently, I saw her at one of the villages getting supplies. I knew right then who she was, and that amulet the old woman was wearing was originally Ariana's to begin with... Her mother gave it to her before she died..." He turned around and looked at Bryant though one couldn't tell because of the darkness that seemed to enclose them, the moon hidden behind the ever growing clouds of smoke. "Now I've lost them both... we have no business staying here, we'll head further south..."

Bryant watched the man a bit warily as he explained his situation. It seemed plausible enough, but something seemed a bit off. He couldn't be sure about his doubts however.

"What would you do if for some reason she managed to survive? Despite what that guy said, it's not within gargoyles' natures to attack people without provocation. And its even less likely for one to strike down a child."

Shaking his head to himself, he glanced towards the forest which was still burning strongly. As he did, he wondered just how the child and the other two gargoyles were faring. Since the girl was within the care of at least one of the female gargoyles, she was most likely safe.

Every once in a while, Dwenna counted herself fortunate, and this was turning out to be one of those times...sort of. One couldn't really pick and chose, though, now could they? The fresh air was almost like a shock, but refreshingly so, the horrible flames left behind as she strained to catch any sort of sign of her charge and fellow gargoyle. Thankfully, she could speak and understand the common tongue, so when Ariana began crying out for that brief period in the night, she did not go unheard.

'Towards the east,' Dwenna noted silently as she swooped down for a closer look. Most likely, they would be near the lakeside, perhaps with a bit of cover, though that was hard to be precise on with another gargoyle to protect her. Dwenna just hoped the mysterious gargoyle had not received any serious injury, distinctly remembering the angry snarls of a bear while they'd been involved with the mob.

The girl seemed to understand. Good. Morrigan slunk back down to the ground, using her staff to balance her forward. No need to fall forward on her face.

She was feeling better now that they were staying put for the moment, but her strength would fully be regained after a day of stone sleep. Speaking of...

Morrigan cast her look to the sky, noting the star positions. A few hours left at most until sunrise. Enough time to find something, perhaps a cave of some sorts, to protect herself from any curious humans.

The gargoyle began to search the sky in any sight of her fellow gargoyle. She wished now more than ever her ability to speak language hadn't been lost. There was so much she wished to ask.. and so much that was going to go unanswered.

Ariana sighed yet again, still trying to figure out how to help her guardian angel, and find the other one at the same time. She was starting to get sleepy which wasn't good on her part, she needed to stay awake.

~*~

"Gargoyles are somewhat like humans, it is not in ones nature to strike down a child, but there are chances where one would..." The man replied, but he sounded unsure. "were she alive, I would search again for her, she is my child, and I want her back."

What was left of the moon was fading behind the horizon; sunrise was coming as it always did. Frowning, Dwenna decided to take her chances and drifted down on the currents, the tips of her wings skimming the water's surface as she landed at the lakeside.

"Ariana?" she called quietly, straining to catch any sort of sound to guide her. It was risky, to be sure, because who knew where those humans had gone to, or if there was someone else out there? Still, she needed to find her companions before sunrise, or they'd all be helpless.
