"And it's an important thing to discuss," Serenity mused, more to herself than to Gaunt. "I know that when I was only going to school, I didn't really think about a whole lot ... and then when I found Ian, I found out that ... school is definitely not one of the most important things in life."

She shook her head. "I understand the need to know the basics - math, reading, writing ... but beyond that it's not necessary. Desirable, perhaps, but not necessary. Myself, I'm an artist - I don't need any letters behind my name to tell the world that I can paint. If that's what the world requires, then I don't want any part of it. Spending years to learn to do one thing ... no. I have a son now, and that's what is important to me. School only takes away my time with him ... and as soon as I'm finished what I must learn, I'll be leaving it behind."

She truly had nothing in common with her schoolmates, and it only became more obvious day by day.

Ian frowned and rubbed his foot on the table. "Well ... not really," he admitted reluctantly. "It's really hard to do things by myself, and I'm not allowed to go anywhere by myself. I want to get bigger ... so I can help Mom out, too. I feel really bad because she always is doing things for me, and helping me, and ... but I can't do anything for her at all."

He nodded at the Prince's final comment. He knew what dorms were - only he had heard that they were not the best place to live.

He nodded as his fingers fidgeted idly with his spoon, not wanting to eat so quickly that Serenity would feel strange since she still had most of her ice cream left. It knew it could be awkward to be the only one at the table still eating. "Mmn. Well I guess that's a differnce in our lifestyle expectations and the ability to meet it. I need to provide for myself and for the Prince. That means working, that means using my education. Of course, I'm a business major at the university, so I guess I'm intending to use what I'm studying."

The Prince nods slowly and he smiles a bit. "Oh, I see. I wish I could do something to help you then, Ian. But.. maybe Serenity enjoys taking care of you. Maybe Serenity loves you no matter what form you're in. If that's the case, then you shouldn't burden yourself with these down thoughts, right? You enrich your life, just as you are."

Serenity blushed. "That's different," she murmured. "I didn't mean ... I mean ... it's just different, you're going to use what you're studying, you're doing something specific and have a goal in mind. The people I know, they're just at school because it means they can be away from their parents and do more or less what they want ..."

Now she was really embarrassed. Way to say something and made Gaunt look bad.

"But for me ... to draw, to paint, like a hope ... as I love to do ... for that I don't need school, is what I meant," she finished, though her words sounded lame even in her own ears. "For some people ... sure. But not for me."

Ian shrugged. "I know Mom loves me no matter what ... but I want to be able to help her, too. At this size, all I do is make messes. I can't even help clean up dishes after we eat - because half of them are bigger than me!"

He dipped his finger in the bottom of his bowl and licked off the ice cream. "You're a normal Second, right? So you're gonna grow someday, probably soon. But I'm not ... I'm one of the sick ones, and I'll never grow because of it."

Gaunt chuckles lightly and he shakes his head slowly as Serenity scrambles to try to cover up what could have been seen as a mis-speak. He smiles softly and he reaches over to pat the top of her hand. "Hey, Serenity. Don't worry so much about it." He smiles softly at her. "I understand that you're an artist. You don't really need formal training. Besides, even though art courses and degrees exist, they're so subjective it's silly." He shakes his head and he chuckles. "Why, I remember a project I did when I was in highschool. We had to draw a paint can pouring something. So I created a scene in outer space. A dead planet, spewing lava from volcanoes. And the paint can floating out there in space, pouring life over the barren landscape. The people all around me said they loved it, it was an origional idea. The art teacher saw a look and wanted me to do something else. Said it was too dark." He rolls his eyes a little and he chuckles. "So I admire you for taking on art by yourself. Because in the end, the art is meaningful to you anyone else who comes along for the ride is bonus points. At least, that's the opinion I came to from that class."

Prince nods slowly and he bites his lip softly. "There has to be something.. something you can do.." He looked around a little, then rested his eyes on the spoon they were doing. "I.. I know you can't do everything, Ian. But. You can do the small stuff, right? Cups? Forks, spoons, knives? You can't do everything, but you can still help! And.. and.. I don't care if you're sick! You're still special and loved! Let that be enough!"

The outburst dragged Gaunt out of his conversation with Serenity. He blinked a few times, then he smiled softly. "Heh. I'm proud of Prince. He's being honest with how he feels. It's something that's not easy for people to do."

A light blush spread across Serenity's cheeks as Gaunt patted her head, and she smiled and lowered her eyes, finally taking a bite of her now-melting ice cream.

"I think that picture sounds wonderful," she murmured, her voice a little wistful. She wished she could see it, but that of course would be impossible. But it also told her a little more about Gaunt, because of course people always drew or painted what was meaningful to them and revealed something about them.

Ian's ears turned a bright red, though his face retained its usual pale pallor, and he grinned widely at the Prince.

"Yeah," he murmured, poking his finger in the remains of his ice cream once more. "You're right."

He just wished that he could do more.

Serenity blinked at Gaunt's comment, and she looked over at the boys and giggled softly. "I'm glad they're getting along so well," she murmured softly. "And Prince really does seem like a good kid ... I'm still not sure I understand what his goal was in throwing ice cream at me," she laughed, "but that's all right."

He smiles softly as he retrieves his hand. He chuckles softly at the compliment. "I thought it looked wonderful. But my point is that art education is based on subjective measures. It doesn't matter what you make, if the professor doesn't like it then you don't get a very good grade." He shrugs a little. "I used to have a copy of it, I had it on a ZIP disk, but the disk stopped working, and ZIP disks aren't really in use any more anyway."

The Prince giggled when he was proclaimed to be correct and half-glomped onto Ian, huggling him tight. "So cheer up, okay?"

Gaunt laughs softly and he nods. "I think he is a good guy. But.. he's still young and doesn't know much. So it's even better that he's attacking what is unknown to him with optimism instead of trying to hide from it. And I don't know what he was thinking by throwing ice cream. I'm sure it makes no sense to anyone but him."

"That's a horrible way to grade something," Serenity couldn't help but comment. "I'm glad that the teachers at my school are not like that."

She was sad that Gaunt didn't have a copy of the picture anymore, she would have loved to see it. She smiled at his comment about the Prince. "One thing I've noticed," she murmured, her eyes sparkling warmly, "is that a Second is raised by a guardian and not left to themselves tends to reflect their guardian. Prince is a good kid ... that means that you're a good man. At least," she concluded, digging into her ice cream once more, "that's good enough proof for me."

Ian giggled and hugged Prince back. "I promise," he grinned. "Thanks."

He pulled off his night cap and scratched his head to get rid of a slight itch, then replaced his cap once more and grinned at Prince. "Hey, let's make sure Mom and your Dad meet up again a lot, okay? So we can play together and stuff ... maybe we can go to the park or something."

Being permanently little meant that he could play as much as he liked, and no one would question him ... despite his age.

It was Gaunt's turn to find himself with reddening cheeks when he received the compliment. He shrugs a little and he smiles warmly. "I haven't been at this for very long at all, Serenity. I'm not sure I've been around Prince along enough to rub off on him. But thank you, that means a lot to me."

Prince nods and he smiles as he releases Ian and he nods again, with more energy. "Yeah! I'd really like that! Your mom and my dad get to meet with each other more and we get to have fun with each other! We both get what we want!"

Gaunt glances down. It was hard to miss the conversation when Prince was being so energetic about it. He tilts his head and he smiles warmly at Serenity. "So, how about it? How about we start planning to meet up sometimes?"

Ian looked up at Serenity, his eyes wide and pleading, for once void of the sleep that had been his life for so long.

"Yeah, Mom! Can we? Please? Pretty please?"

Serenity giggled and reached over to ruffle Ian's hair affectionately, making him squeal and reach for his cap before it fell to the table.

"Of course we can," she smiled brightly. She looked up at Gaunt. "I would like that very much," she murmured. "As I said, it's rare that I find someone outside the family that I can actually talk to ... and I would be very happy to meet up with you again to talk, or debate, or just ..."

She laughed. "Or just hang out. That's something I've never done before."

The Prince laughed and threw up his hands joyously when Serenity proclaimed they could hang out. "Horray! I'm so happy! I can't wait to play with Ian in the park~! ♫♪"

Gaunt laughs softly and he smiles warmly at Serenity, also giving little Prince a pat on the head. "Alright then. So now all we need is a time and a place." He smiles softly and he tilts his head. "Since I'm not from Gaia, if you want to meet me there, I'd have to depend on you to help me get to where you want us to meet."

Serenity's cheeks tinged a slight shade of pink, but her voice was calm as she answered, "I really don't mind coming here ... it's almost easier if I do, since I just take a portal anyways. To go to the park in Gaia it's a long walk from the nearest portal ..."

"Hey Mom, didn't we see a park on our way into the city?" Ian asked excitedly. "It had swings and slides and everything!"

He looked over at Prince, his eyes shining brightly. "I bet we could have loads of fun there! And there were even picnic tables and stuff so we could have a picnic too!"

Serenity laughed. "Yes, we did see one ... do you know of it?" she asked Gaunt, looking at him and tilting her head curiously. "It's near the southern end of the city, it's quite big."

He nods and he smiles softly. "Anywhere will work, Serenity, really. I can either show you to places, or you can show me." He chuckles softly, and smiles warmly. "Just as long as we all have fun, I think I'd call whatever we'd do a success."

Prince nods and he smiles brightly. "Yeah! Lots of toys for us to play on sounds like a great time!" He was practically writhing where he sat on the table. "I can't wait!"

Gaunt nods as he leans back slightly against his seat and he nods. "Yeah, it's one of the biggest parks there. Not only does it have playground equipment, but also two tennis courts, a basketball court, and a small public pool. It's a nice place to go, though I don't usually go by myself because it's kinda lonely going alone. Or, it was." He smiles softly down at Prince.

Ian clapped his hands together excitedly. "Yeah!" he exclaimed. "That's gonna be so much fun! I can't hardly wait for us to go there! Hey Mom, don't forget your bag next time, okay? You gotta get pictures of all of us having fun together!"

Serenity laughed. "I won't forget," she promised her son, her eyes sparkling brightly. "I think it sounds like a wonderful idea." She turned back to Gaunt. "Shall we make plans right now then to meet there sometime soon? Perhaps the weekend or something? I can give you my email address, though I can't check it often ... the only computers I can get to are at school ..."

She would have to talk to her mother about that. Or maybe she could borrow Kali's computer ...
PostPosted: Fri Jan 16, 2009 3:43 pm

Gaunt nods and he smiles softly. "Making a plan right now sounds great. The weekend is good, too. Because then I don't have any classes to plan around." He chuckles and smiles warmly, pulling out a knapkin and pushing it toward her. "You can put your email address on here, and I'll put it in my contact book when I get back to the university. And.. mmn.. as for what time.. Well, since we want to make a picnic out of it, around lunch or dinner sounds like the most logical choice." He chuckles softly.

The Prince blinks and tilts his head a little. "Pictures.. of all of us.. having fun together? I really like the idea, Ian, but how are we all going to be together and have pictures at the same time? Does the camera.. float around or something? Or do you tell it what to do and it does what you say? That sounds like an amazing camera!" He grins, not realizing how absurd it was that he said something like that.

Serenity pulled the napkin towards herself and reached for her purse, which was on the bench beside her, to pull out a pen.

"Lunch?" she suggested. "Then we have the entire afternoon. Evenings always end too quickly."

She wrote down her email address on the napkin, her writing neat and slightly calligraphic, and then passed the napkin back to Gaunt. "There," she smiled. "I'll be sure to check it when I can."

Ian blinked at the Prince. "Camera?" he asked blankly. "That's boring - Mom's an artist, she paints! She paints everywhere we go and everything we do, she says she's going to make a scrapbook for me so that someday I can look at it and remember all the people I meet and everything we do!"

He grinned at his new friend. "Bet she'll make a copy of the pictures she makes for you and your dad, so you can remember too."
