Did I mention my family fought for Germany in WWI?

So did mine... My great grandfather lobbed shells for the Kaiser
PostPosted: Mon Jan 05, 2009 11:41 am

Which country? My family were spread through eastern Germany and Prussia, and a pocket existed in Riga, Latvia. That pocket doesn't exist any more.
Quite ironically, my family also fought for Russia. We had relations across the border. Therefore, your great grandad might have killed one of my great great uncles while sharing a train cabin with my great grandfather's cousin.

How I love Europe's madness. And how I hate it.

The Kaiser = German.

He was stationed on the western front near Ypres.

I'm not sure which battles he was involved in or who he was shooting at exactly.

Yes I knew he was Central Powers but under the Kaiser he could have been Austrian, Hungarian, Prussian, Dutch... as well as German.

Ypres... If he survived the war, I doubt it was the Battle for Paschendale, Verdun or the Somme. Both sides were destroyed in those battles, though Germany came off better most times.

According to our family history. He was in the rear of the trenches blasting away at no man's land. He would serve 2 months... then get on a train have 1 week leave and then return for another 2 months. This continued until his action stopped and he had to move his artillery pieces.

I think he was a sargent of some kind, and was part of the loading team.

Thats... lucky. Artillery? The German artillery was some of the most advanced in the world, and the squads led an almost peaceful life compared to the infantry (who were lucky if they survived a week on the frontlines). The only complaint they could have is the noise.

This is WWI we're on about here. It was WWII with the facsists. WWI was the one with the oligarchs and the empires, especially Germany trying to build one overseas, and Austro-Hungary trying to keep its subjects together (hence Serbian group Black Hand gets Princip and 6 others to kill the Archduke, Austria declare war on Serbia, Russia defends Serbia, France dragged in via treaty with Russia, Germany dragged in via treaty with Austria, Italy dragged in via treaty with Germany, Belgium invaded, Britain dragged in defending Belgium and France, Japan dragged in via treaty with Britain, Turkey wants some action and helps Germany, and the stupid idea of They Can't Attack Us Because We Have A Treaty With So-and-so failed MISERABLY).

I'm a history geek. mrgreen

Does the "War against Franco" hold any bearing on the subject?

The civil war in 1936-39? Spain has been neutral for over a century, and was in WWI. However, Nazi germany and Fascist Italy supported Franco. Lots of info!

Franco was still a fascist that Zumbi's family had to deal with.

Oh right. Okay. Shall we continue with amusing tales of dealing with fascism?
