"I've no idea." Maddy shrugged, looking at Ophelia. The two boys at the table seemed to have hit it off very well and neither had answered the question, so Maddy saw it as her call to do so. "Maybe it's from the same place as Thanksgiving? It could be."
"Does anyone need help?" She asked hopefully, feeling a bit stupid without anything to do while everyone else was busy.

Josh nodded, "Let's be good dinopirates and help cook!" He said, washing his hands. Mr. Prosper seemed to think this was the best idea. "We can be cooking dinopirates!"
The idea of cooking made Josh remember that he was hungry, so he quickly added, "If we cook, we get to eat! Mommy bringed foods. I cooked with her! She says I'm a big help."

Lucien wiggled his already clean fingers (which were attached to his already clean hands) and smiled happily. He rushed over to grasp the counter with chubby fingers and peeked over, balancing himself on the balls of his feet for height.
"Sorry for running," he said with a guilty smile. "But we can help now, yeah? We have clean hands." Lucien raised a hand proudly and gestured to Josh with the other.

Sliding the green beans into the bowl, he smiled gratefully at Delilah. "Thanks," he said. Once all the green beans were scooped in, he plucked the bowl from the nice lady's hands and placed it back on the table. Then he scooted over to scrub potatoes with Casca, rolling up his sleeves first. Dirt, at least, washed off his skin.
"I opened the cans of mushroom soup for Sugita-san," he offered, on the subject of helping others cook. "And watched the clock so it wouldn't burn. She does a lot of work, so sometimes she forgets."

"Mum just does a lot of weird veggie dishes," said Casca meditatively, "and I know she's not even vegetarian; I've seen her eat bacon over the sink."
Lindy Naaktgeboren basically always ate bacon over the sink; she claimed it was the best way to eat bacon. Her son didn't disagree. "I open up cans too, 'Lisle," he said to Carl, without batting an eyelid, "only I don't use the can opener."
Maddy had asked a question -- he turned his curly head around, shrugging at her. "You can come scrub potatoes," he said, "but it's a dirty job, honey." (Casca seemed to be big on random endearments.)

A small blush covered her cheeks at Casca's endearment, a bit unused to being called 'honey' by anyone but her mother.
"I don't mind dirt. Scoot over." Maddy had worn a sleeveless top today and didn't have to worry about her sleeves like Carlisle did, but the sink was starting to become a bit crowded and the fact that two out of three people crowding it had wings really wasn't helping things.
Still, she did her best to work fastly and efficiently, and between the three of them the potatoes were being washed in record time.

Joshua went to the counter, but Lucien's side. "We're sorry," He said. "Can we help? I'm a good cook!" He bragged. Thali over heard his comment, and rolled her eyes. Josh had helped her bake pies earlier. Well, truthfully, it was more like watching. It was Josh that had called it helping.

Well excuse him for breathing! Carlisle frowned and scrubbed a section of skin right off a potato, completely by accident. "Oops," he muttered, pulling in his elbows so Madeleine had room. Then he shrugged. "Sugita-san's not very much for letting other people use her kitchen stuff, and my aunt's scared I'll chop off one of my hands or something," he grumped, running his hands under the water when the last potato had been washed.

"My mum's the opposite," said Casca, finishing his own potato; all three of them had finished up in record time. He looked slightly gloomy. "She makes me open them up with my claws. Every single one. Even cans of tomato soup. I wish she worried I chopped off my hands."
He fastidiously rubbed his wet hands down on the fronts of his jeans. "We done?"

"Long," said Carlisle, joining Madeleine at the table. "I don't think I'm staying for the potluck. Which kind of sucks, 'cause it sounds like fun. I gotta go home and eat with my aunt and uncle."

"Me too." She made a face, having had a lot of fun so far. "Mom had work to do and she figured I'd have more fun here than with the nanny, but we're having dinner at Grandma's tonight."
She looked at the clock. "She should be picking me up soon, yeah."
